An Unexpected Chapter: What could have gone differently.
After a long journey of seeking my sister to Kanter City, to traveling a train to Tombstone. And to finally stop at our destination San Ponsisco.
After enduring so much the way here it didn't seem worth it. But seeing as we brought the lost home and seeing the families rejoice over the ones brought back made me happy. But remembering about the ones we had lost brought me back to reality.
And of course when I had stepped down I was tackled by the big train wreck of my best friend Brightblade, he sniffled and held me closely "You damn lucky son of a bitch!" He cried at me as he held me closely.
One of my companions and friend Wildfire smirked at us, giving a teasing wink and hugging her partner and my friend Stonehoof, who gave a chuckle as he saw us.
Bright seemed to have a death grip on me "Bright... Can't.. Breathe.." I gasped and he released me slightly so I could breath easily. He looked at me sheepishly and gave a soft smile. My friend who had traveled from our home Stable 45 all the way west here to San Ponsisco. The travel through the wastes had not been kind to him. A scar ran down from his once handsome face and down to his neck, why he didn't die of that I'll never know, but I have to say it was a miracle he didn't.
He began to tell me that 15 of our Stable 45 group had died on the way here, among them was Cinnamon Twist and his husband Goldmane. As I looked closer he looked so heartbroken and I knew he was beating himself up about it. I gave him the biggest hug I could and he returned it gladly, burrowing his muzzle in my mane and crying out softly. The others gave us a wide berth of privacy. I gave them a thankful nod and stroked Bright softly.
"What.." he managed to choke out "What happened to Ebony?" The question caught me a bit off guard and I slumped slightly looking down. I heard Bright sigh sadly and the other members of our former Stable gasping. Hearing that they're beloved Overmare was gone.
"I couldn't save her Bright" I said choking slightly tears welling in my eyes and running free. I didn't need to say more as he hugged me again and nuzzled me reassuringly. It felt good knowing that he was close, there to comfort me and I him. It felt.. Some how nice.
I looked up at him once more "Please Bright.. Can you bring me to Tiny?" I asked "I want to see my niece" he nodded giving a soft smile in return and began leading me to her. The ponies we passed by gave me their condolences and greetings. I didn't pay much attention but I knew Bright supported me all the way for the daunting job I had to do next.
As we arrived to the building where my niece was staying with Spearmint our former local nurse, I began walking towards the entrance, looking back I could see Bright looking back at me. He looked.. So lost, so alone and in good conscience I couldn't leave him out there. It was starting to rain, well it had some time ago, I just really didn't notice until now.
"Bright.. Why don't you come up with me.." I didn't have to say more, he perked slightly more up and trotted slowly with me upstairs. No words were said as we approached the apartment Tiny was staying in. None were needed.
I opened the door of the apartment, feeling Bright's supportive gaze at me as I walked inside. Inside the apartment looked like it had been assaulted with party grenades and cannons as it was littered with streamers and confetti all around, a big banner was raised and on it was written, "Welcome home Mommy, Daddy and Uncle Shadow" I smiled sadly. I took off my saddle bags and Luna's Ruse and placed them near the door, Bright had silently closed the door for me. Inside I started to hear ponies, a very high pitched voice mingling in with a more elderly one.
"Now Sugar I think we've done enough for now, and we want to make sure It's really them" The elderly mare said as I walked slightly in seeing who was inside the kitchen. In there was a bright pink little foal with a plate full of Cupcakes in her magical grip, she had begun to get better at that. Inside following her was Spearmint, the green Unicorn mare sat there her gaze fixed on me and she gasped.
"Aunty Spearmint what's wrong?" Tiny asked as her gaze followed the older one's. her eyes lit up and jumped from her chair to lunge at me. I was attacked or rather my leg was attacked by a fit of a little bunch of giggling sugarhigh foal. I smiled to her and hugged her "Hey Tiny" I said and she hugged my snout and nuzzled me. She batted her hooves at my nose as I nuzzled back and she giggled more.
She opened her eyes and looked behind me, as if looking for ponies that she expected to see. Only seeing Bright walking in after me. "Where's mommy and Daddy?" She asked hesitantly those words were enough to shatter any happiness I had. I gulped slowly, feeling a lump in my throat as i looked at her.
She looked at me back, tears starting to swell in her eyes. She shook her head hugged my snout once more to cry into. Spearmint had started to cry as well but she was greeted with Bright's massive hug to support and soothe her.
We all just stayed there, crying and hugging each other. After a while Sugar Pie had fallen asleep and Spearmint had gone into her own apartment. Me, Bright and Tiny were the only one's left. Bright had told me he felt more comfortable to sleep on the couch. I had given him some blankets and a pillow that I found and he happily took them.
I stayed in the room Tiny had been staying with Spearmint in for some time. It was a queen sized bed and enough for us both if not more. Hell Bright could have joined the party, but I knew he would rather stay on the couch and give me and Tiny a little privacy.
I lay her on the bed and smiled sadly at her. She looked like her mother in a lot of ways. If only.. If only my sister were here. I lay on the bed and held Tiny close to me and soon succumbed to slumber myself.
----A week later----
I woke up by the feeling of someone shifting me in my sleep. I groaned slightly and looked up to see my friends smiling face "Wake up Shadow" He said with a grin "Yeah wake up uncle Shadow!" A more younger voice cried out. I looked down off the bed to see my niece bouncing excitedly up and down "It's almost time for school!" She exclaimed and Bright chuckled "Yes and you don't want to be late do you?" He asked her knowingly as she nodded so fiercely she stumbled a little. That was all the answers I needed.
I looked up at Bright, he had agreed on staying with me and Tiny here. He had been sleeping on the couch for the past week and I felt kinda bad for that. I had once or twice told him I had no problem sharing the bed, but he had declined saying that he wanted me and Tiny to have it.
Now I knew that there was something off there, still it was his choice so I didn't question it more. I had gotten Sugar to school finally and soon I was starting off at my own job in the gardens that San Ponsisco had, Bright had been skeptical at first wanting me to join with him into Security like we had in the stable. But frankly my gunpony days were over and I wanted to leave it like that. With time he had agreed on it, but I still could tell he was troubled by it.
I stepped off the bed and made my way to the bathroom where I took a quick shower then got Tiny ready for school.
She had her bags already on her, they were a little bit big for her but she said that she didn't mind. Still I offered to carry her, she had agreed. Saying something about a piggy back ride on her Uncle. Bright had only chuckled and shooed us off while he got some things ready.
We had walked out the door and Tiny already began to rant over how much fun school was going to be. She had taken the news about her mother pretty badly, but with Bright and Spearmint close helped a lot. She had been a bit reclusive but Bright nudged her off and she picked herself up. He always had that effect on her. He always got her better when she felt down like that.
It had been a fun sight seeing her go to school. A little nervous.. Well fine it was nerve wrecking but when it was all said and done I felt like a weight had been lifted off me. Some of the parents had given me a knowing look and chuckled and I smiled back to them and looked at my niece happily run off to the other kids.
I had left her at her school saying my goodbyes and promising to pick her up later on. It was good walking back and I started to think about the last week. With Bright staying it felt like we were a family. Bright... he had lost Goldmane and he had been grieving ever since. He had told me that a giant Radscorpion had ambushed them had managed to get at Goldmane when he was running away. The poor stallion never got far as he was snapped in two by the things pincers.
I shuddered a little feeling bad for him and my friend. He had seen it all and blamed himself for it. I tried to reassure him but I knew he blamed himself. Talking about him, he had been acting a bit weird around me the past few days. After he had started living with us, well because I didn't want him to be alone. I feared what he might do if we wouldn't be there for him.
He has been avoiding me at times or staying at the kitchen at times or making himself busy. I had planned after bringing Tiny to School to confront him about this. Whatever barrier had come between us I wanted to break it.
I stepped to our apartment block and entered the lobby and took a straight line for the stairs to our apartment. I walked inside and saw Bright tinkering with a sidearm. We normally don't carry weapons but Bright had insisted having something to keep himself busy at and had always preferred gun maintenance.
I closed the door at our apartment and looked at Bright, my white mane going in front of my eyes. That reminded me that I needed a cut. But let's put that aside. I looked at him and huffed my mane away from my eyes.
He looked at me and smiled slightly, I huffed softly and his smile dropped. He knew why I was looking at him. he stood up and sighed "I'll talk" he said. I smiled and sat beside him. He looked at me and I sat back waiting for an answer. As I looked I noticed some different features about him, he was blushing and his breath was a bit more heavier than usual. He leaned in close expecting him to tell me. He staggered a bit away blushing more brightly. I raised an eyebrow at him "Bright, is there something the matter?" I asked gently, he looked away as if ashamed and took a deep breath and exhaled and looked at me. His mouth opened but the words were caught in his throat. He closed it again and looked back down doing the same thing before without much result. I leaned in closer "Bright you're worrying me a bit-" I was cut off by him kissing me in mid speech. I flushed brightly I could feel that as bright as day. Well as you can feel in the wasteland.
He held me closely and I tried to fight at first but I succumbed and closed my eyes melting into the kiss and holding him close to me. He broke the kiss looking more confident than before. "Shadow.." he paused and looked at me and smiled "I want to say this.. And I have wanted to say it for such a long time, you've been my best friend for years.. And after the whole incident.. And you going off.. And just everything going to shit.. I thought I'd lost you, then I lost Gold.." I stopped him with my hoof before he began to ramble.
Tears ran down his cheeks and I suddenly felt myself see him in a new light. He was well, how can I describe it. Well for starters he was more handsome then I saw him. He just had this kind of feeling that It was nice to be around him. I felt calm.. I felt.. The best way to say it is.. Complete.
He started again "Shadow.. I love you, and I have always loved you. And after everything, when I saw you.. I didn't want to loose you again.. And I promised myself I would try and fix things between us" he paused "If they could have been" He smiled to me his tears streaming freely I knew they were not of sadness but of happiness. "And now I know that it was possible" He said giving me another kiss which I gladly returned.
We stayed there on the couch for a while doing nothing but cuddling and talking and kissing. It felt nice, to just relax in each others hooves and support each other. He was still grieving over Goldmane and I Ebony. We always had each others backs, even when we were just foals. He had admitted his feelings for me back then when we were teenagers and I had politely turned him off. He took it well but I knew he still had those feelings for me and really for a long time I didn't know witch barn door I swung through.
I had been lost for a long time and for a while I regretted turning Bright off and not giving him a chance. But he had hooked up with Gold, we had of course fought over it Gold and I, I didn't want to risk our friendship because of those said feelings.
We had gotten over it but I suspected Gold never actually trusted me. I felt bad for Bright to have lost him, he was a good colt at times. But I didn't really know, Gold and I had never actually gotten to know each other that much but I grieved for him with my friend.. Or should I say Coltfriend.. I don't really know yet.
Bright held me tightly towards him and I nuzzled him lovingly for some reason I just wanted to. He gave a soft chuckle "Ya know.. I've been waiting for this since we were colts.. Since I saw you in that dress on Nightmare Night" I flushed brightly and burrowed my muzzle in his mane "Not fair!" I exclaimed and he laughed "Come on admit it" He said "You looked cute in that." Damn that cursed day when I wore a dress at Nightmare Night. It had been Ebony's idea of a costume. She was Nightmare Moon and I was Princess Luna. I had been called a filly some days after that.. and no mercy from my sister either.
I flicked my ears back and I looked at him and his handsome grin. I flushed again and swatted his nose making him wince "Ow!" He teasingly shouted "What was that for?" he asked and grinned wider "For reminding me" I shot back not able to hide the smile that was forming on my muzzle and giving him a playful nip. He chuckled and kissed me again "Well you were cute in it"
I'll give Bright this, he could convince me of something and this was one of those things. I kissed him back and blushed at him "Do you.. think we should go any further?" I asked a bit timidly. He looked at me with a blush himself "Well only if you trust yourself enough for it sure."
I had to admit I felt a bit nervous about this. I didn't know I was doing in the first place, but it felt just so right. I kissed him softly and nuzzled him "I'm sure" I told him softly and he held me at his chest and I felt just content to stay there with him.
We stayed there for a little while more until I stepped off the couch and walked to my room and I flicked my tail towards Bright to follow. I was blushing so furiously and i could tell he was too.
He followed and we sat at the bed. I didn't know quite what to do, but Bright seemed to know, he started to kiss me and I returned it lovingly. He held me to him in the kiss and stroked my sides and went down to my flank and stroked it gently. I blushed and gasped a bit not really used to such attention from a stallion. He broke the kiss and looked at me with a smile. Oh he knew I wasn't used to it. He took it slow, he stroked my flank and cutie marks on both sides, it felt good, and not just the attention but how he was doing it. He messaged them in a clockwise motion then counterclockwise. I moaned softly as he did so and he moved to my back.
Helping me to relax and melt in his hooves. I felt absolutely at heaven. He was amazing.

It felt great to stay with him. After our talking we both went to get Sugar from school. Some of the kids asked if we were her parents. We looked at each other and smiled and shook our heads. "Close relatives" I had said "I'm her Uncle" one of the colts that had been there got wide eyes "You're her uncle?" He had asked. I cocked my head "Yes what about it?" He had told us about what she had told them about my adventures.. Most of them were what Stone and Wild had told her. Even a few that Balefire one of my friends and passengers of the former Raider train had told her.
I swear it was a nightmare. Bright and Tiny had talked and laughed about to my chagrin but I had to take it.
When we got home we looked at each other then at the running filly that was on her way to the kitchen. We had to tell her, better sooner than later. We had talked about it and both agreed on that much.
Eventually we had sat down with her on the kitchen table and told her.
"Look Sugar Pie" Bright started "Your Uncle Shadow and I.. We.." he started to fumble over his own words "We like each other very much" I helped him and he gave me a thankful smile "Yes and well things might be a bit more... Different between us.. Between us all" He said with a smile to her.
Sugar had looked at us with a scrunched up nose "What do you mean?" She asked us.
"Well Tiny.. It means that we'll be kinda like how he and Gold were" I said to her. It took her a second and she smiled "So you two.. are like together now?" She asked with a giggle "Shadow's got a coltfriend, shadow's got a coltfriend" She teased us and Bright folded his foreleg around me and smiled "Oh yes he does" He said with a chuckle and kissed me.
Tiny to her own chagrin 'Eewed' at our kiss and giggles. She hugged us. Rather we had sandwiched her between us and hugged her. She complained about not getting enough air but giggled at us.
We had told Spearmint next but that wasn't a few day's later when we actually got sure. She was ecstatic about it. She said she would support us and love us. She really was like the grandmother Ebony and I had never had. She was the best mare you could have.
We lived the next few weeks happily.. Until that night where it all ended.

Some of the parents had given me a knowing look and chuckled and I smiled back to them and looked at my niece happily run off to the other kids.
I had left her at her school saying my goodbyes and promising to pick her up later on. It was good walking back and I started to think about the last week. With Bright staying it felt like we were a family. Bright... he had lost Goldmane and he had been grieving ever since. He had told me that a giant Radscorpion had ambushed them had managed to get at Goldmane when he was running away. The poor stallion never got far as he was snapped in two by the things pincers.
I shuddered a little feeling bad for him and my friend. He had seen it all and blamed himself for it. I tried to reassure him but I knew he blamed himself. Talking about him, he had been acting a bit weird around me the past few days. After he had started living with us, well because I didn't want him to be alone. I feared what he might do if we wouldn't be there for him.
He has been avoiding me at times or staying at the kitchen at times or making himself busy. I had planned after bringing Tiny to School to confront him about this. Whatever barrier had come between us I wanted to break it.
I stepped to our apartment block and entered the lobby and took a straight line for the stairs to our apartment. I walked inside and saw Bright tinkering with a sidearm. We normally don't carry weapons but Bright had insisted having something to keep himself busy at and had always preferred gun maintenance.
I closed the door at our apartment and looked at Bright, my white mane going in front of my eyes. That reminded me that I needed a cut. But let's put that aside. I looked at him and huffed my mane away from my eyes.
He looked at me and smiled slightly, I huffed softly and his smile dropped. He knew why I was looking at him. he stood up and sighed "I'll talk" he said. I smiled and sat beside him. He looked at me and I sat back waiting for an answer. As I looked I noticed some different features about him, he was blushing and his breath was a bit more heavier than usual. He leaned in close expecting him to tell me. He staggered a bit away blushing more brightly. I raised an eyebrow at him "Bright, is there something the matter?" I asked gently, he looked away as if ashamed and took a deep breath and exhaled and looked at me. His mouth opened but the words were caught in his throat. He closed it again and looked back down doing the same thing before without much result. I leaned in closer "Bright you're worrying me a bit-" I was cut off by him kissing me in mid speech. I flushed brightly I could feel that as bright as day. Well as you can feel in the wasteland.
He held me closely and I tried to fight at first but I succumbed and closed my eyes melting into the kiss and holding him close to me. He broke the kiss looking more confident than before. "Shadow.." he paused and looked at me and smiled "I want to say this.. And I have wanted to say it for such a long time, you've been my best friend for years.. And after the whole incident.. And you going off.. And just everything going to shit.. I thought I'd lost you, then I lost Gold.." I stopped him with my hoof before he began to ramble.
Tears ran down his cheeks and I suddenly felt myself see him in a new light. He was well, how can I describe it. Well for starters he was more handsome then I saw him. He just had this kind of feeling that It was nice to be around him. I felt calm.. I felt.. The best way to say it is.. Complete.
He started again "Shadow.. I love you, and I have always loved you. And after everything, when I saw you.. I didn't want to loose you again.. And I promised myself I would try and fix things between us" he paused "If they could have been" He smiled to me his tears streaming freely I knew they were not of sadness but of happiness. "And now I know that it was possible" He said giving me another kiss which I gladly returned.
We stayed there on the couch for a while doing nothing but cuddling and talking and kissing. It felt nice, to just relax in each others hooves and support each other. He was still grieving over Goldmane and I Ebony. We always had each others backs, even when we were just foals. He had admitted his feelings for me back then when we were teenagers and I had politely turned him off. He took it well but I knew he still had those feelings for me and really for a long time I didn't know witch barn door I swung through.
I had been lost for a long time and for a while I regretted turning Bright off and not giving him a chance. But he had hooked up with Gold, we had of course fought over it Gold and I, I didn't want to risk our friendship because of those said feelings.
We had gotten over it but I suspected Gold never actually trusted me. I felt bad for Bright to have lost him, he was a good colt at times. But I didn't really know, Gold and I had never actually gotten to know each other that much but I grieved for him with my friend.. Or should I say Coltfriend.. I don't really know yet.
Bright held me tightly towards him and I nuzzled him lovingly for some reason I just wanted to. He gave a soft chuckle "Ya know.. I've been waiting for this since we were colts.. Since I saw you in that dress on Nightmare Night" I flushed brightly and burrowed my muzzle in his mane "Not fair!" I exclaimed and he laughed "Come on admit it" He said "You looked cute in that." Damn that cursed day when I wore a dress at Nightmare Night. It had been Ebony's idea of a costume. She was Nightmare Moon and I was Princess Luna. I had been called a filly some days after that.. and no mercy from my sister either.
I flicked my ears back and I looked at him and his handsome grin. I flushed again and swatted his nose making him wince "Ow!" He teasingly shouted "What was that for?" he asked and grinned wider "For reminding me" I shot back not able to hide the smile that was forming on my muzzle and giving him a playful nip. He chuckled and kissed me again "Well you were cute in it"
I'll give Bright this, he could convince me of something and this was one of those things. I kissed him back and blushed at him "Do you.. think we should go any further?" I asked a bit timidly. He looked at me with a blush himself "Well only if you trust yourself enough for it sure."
I had to admit I felt a bit nervous about this. I didn't know I was doing in the first place, but it felt just so right. I kissed him softly and nuzzled him "I'm sure" I told him softly and he held me at his chest and I felt just content to stay there with him.
We stayed there for a little while more until I stepped off the couch and walked to my room and I flicked my tail towards Bright to follow. I was blushing so furiously and i could tell he was too.
After having our little fun we on the bed for a few minutes, panting heavily and murmuring softly. He nuzzled me lovingly and I did so back.
"I love you Shadow" Bright said with a smile, I couldn't help but smile again and I kissed him "I love you too Bright.. I think I have for a long time" I said to him and he hugged him.
A few hours later we had showered and talked about recent events. We figured well since of everything happening we had to see what was what. He was going to stay with us but wanted to sleep on the couch until we could come to a right decision about things. And really I had to agree. But that didn't mean I didn't sneak a kiss at times and a nuzzle.
It felt great to stay with him. After our talking we both went to get Sugar from school. Some of the kids asked if we were her parents. We looked at each other and smiled and shook our heads. "Close relatives" I had said "I'm her Uncle" one of the colts that had been there got wide eyes "You're her uncle?" He had asked. I cocked my head "Yes what about it?" He had told us about what she had told them about my adventures.. Most of them were what Stone and Wild had told her. Even a few that Balefire one of my friends and passengers of the former Raider train had told her.
I swear it was a nightmare. Bright and Tiny had talked and laughed about to my chagrin but I had to take it.
When we got home we looked at each other then at the running filly that was on her way to the kitchen. We had to tell her, better sooner than later. We had talked about it and both agreed on that much.
Eventually we had sat down with her on the kitchen table and told her.
"Look Sugar Pie" Bright started "Your Uncle Shadow and I.. We.." he started to fumble over his own words "We like each other very much" I helped him and he gave me a thankful smile "Yes and well things might be a bit more... Different between us.. Between us all" He said with a smile to her.
Sugar had looked at us with a scrunched up nose "What do you mean?" She asked us.
"Well Tiny.. It means that we'll be kinda like how he and Gold were" I said to her. It took her a second and she smiled "So you two.. are like together now?" She asked with a giggle "Shadow's got a coltfriend, Shadow's got a coltfriend" She teased us and Bright folded his foreleg around me and smiled "Oh yes he does" He said with a chuckle and kissed me.
Tiny to her own chagrin 'Eewed' at our kiss and giggles. She hugged us. Rather we had sandwiched her between us and hugged her. She complained about not getting enough air but giggled at us.
We had told Spearmint next but that wasn't a few day's later when we actually got sure. She was ecstatic about it. She said she would support us and love us. She really was like the grandmother Ebony and I had never had. She was the best mare you could have.
We lived the next few weeks happily.. Until that night where it all ended.
