Every civilization has its own avatar of death. It is a way of putting a face to that unfathomable, terrifying abyss, an attempt to understand it. On Earth, there are many names for the darkness that is death, ranging from the Grim Reaper to the Angel of Death. After all, even if death exists as a physical being, surely no mere mortal could hope to comprehend its physical form.

Things are quite different on Equestria. On this world, death is universal and unchanging. It does not come in silence, it does not whisper or caress with its toxic touch. Death comes with violence. It rips apart, it tears, it destroys. Death it not pony, nor zebra, nor griffon. It is not a dragon, or a changeling, or a minotaur, or a manticore, or any other natural creature. In the language of griffons it is called Yvithagn. Human.

But of course it's just a myth, an avatar made to put a face on an unknowable force. No being like that could really exist. No, it's nothing but a story, a legend made to scare potential evildoers into keeping to the path of harmony.
