Picture our scene, an ordinary home in a town once called ordinary. Its thatched roof gleams with fresh straw and its shutters glow with new paint. Birds are singing their sweet morning song, the sun is shining, everything is right at the moment. But within, within the scene is not quite is neat and tidy. Within the house is-
“LYRA!”
For within this house there lives two mares who often times embody the very saying of opposites attract.
“Lyra Heartstrings!”
As I was saying within this humble abode lives two ponies, one a unicorn with a coat like mint, the other a more down to Equestria earth pony whose coat is more reminiscent of fresh churned butter. If you will look up you will see, at the top of those stairs, is a sensible pony, a pony by the name of Bon Bon. Now right now she may not look it but she is a well-respected candy maker in this particular region of Equestria. Right now however you might say she was instead an escapee from the mental ward, with frazzled hair and a strangely knit object grasped in her hoof.
And now if you would turn you attention to the left you will see, through the haze of that out of place black smoke, the head of our dear Lyra, adorned on her face a more sheepish expression. Now this is a pony many would argue should be in the mental ward, among those ponies would be her marefriend and roommate Bon Bon.
“Lyra Heartstrings, what in the hoof are you doing.” Bon Bon enunciated each of her words with a step of the staircase until she ran out of stairs.
The frazzled and fed up marefriend did not stop at the moment of the bottom step but instead walked a few steps more over to where the umbrella stand sat quietly next to the front door. Without even looking she reached within with practiced ease, where our scope of view does not quite reach, and pulled out a bright red fire extinguisher. The soft rubbery handle of said extinguisher fit almost perfectly in her rather tightly clenched teeth. Had you been forming a hypothesis over the frequency of fires within this household like a certain purple unicorn might, you would have yet further evidence with the finely formed grooves left from previous tight clenches. With a muffled grunt Bon Bon hefted the heavy canister to the kitchen, pushed past the perpetrator of trouble and headed into the inky unknown.
It was several minutes later that the return of our pale mare was announced by the sound of wracking coughs, and when she came back into view, pale she was no longer. Coat stained black with soot and eyes teary red, our sweet Bon Bon now more closely resembled the very visage of death. And it was a glare of death that she shot at the sheepish Lyra.
"What. Have. I. Told. You. About. Using. My. Kitchen." Came a husky growl that ended in yet more coughs that stirred up little patches of soot.
Our green unicorn had the smarts, for once in her adventurous life, to back away slowly like what one might do when faced with an advancing predator. A quite apt metaphor considering the situation. Still, while her hooves spoke with wisdom, her mouth had not quite caught up.
"Not to?"
"Exactly!" With a small scream Bon Bon pressed herself, muzzle to muzzle, up against Lyra. "This is the fifth time this week you've made some form of mess that I was left to clean up. Is anything I've said gotten through to you at all?"
"Erm...Yes?" Was the tentative, quivering reply.
"One thing. Tell me one thing I have said this week."
"Not to use the kitchen without asking."
Bon Bon backed away, turning flank on her sweet intentioned but often misguided friend, "We're done, Lyra."
These three words jolted life into Lyra, causing her the leap to her beloved's side, a hoof placing itself on her still grey from soot shoulder. Just as quickly was that same shoulder jerked away, causing that mint hoof to fall away.
"Oh, come one Bon Bon,after all we've gone through together?"
This caused her to turn sharply on her hoof, almost knocking the unicorn out at the speed that she turn.
"You mean all I've gone through! Do you realize how many of your messes I've had to clean up? How much sleep I've lost trying to repair the damage? How about all the bits I've lost trying to keep a roof over our head while you're out gallivanting in the Everfree forest spouting wild claims about creatures that do not exist!"
Ponyville's renown confectioner was now the very definition of anger, dilated pupils, eyes unblinking, angry huffs as she tried to catch her breathe. The sight caused a shiver of fear to enter even Lyra's thick plated skull. Never before had Bon Bon blown up quite like this and Lyra's mind, one that focused on the now and not the then, could not comprehend what caused it. And so once more a nervous hoof reached out, in hopes of comforting and calming down the seething mare.
"Lyra, I want you out of here. Today. This was the last straw. I can't handle all of your little mishaps anymore. I need a break."
It was with those finals words to her confused companion that Bon Bon turns to meet those golden eyes. A soft kiss lands on Lyra's muzzle before sooty hooves pull away. Our poor unicorn watches as her marefriend, no, ex marefriend's flank makes its way back up the stairs of their shared house. Then a resounding sound echoed through Lyra's splayed back ears as an upstairs door, the door to the bathroom if she wasn't mistaken, slammed shut.
Author's Note
Something I found sitting around on my computer from months ago (from april to be exact) and decided to try to finish at least the first chapter. I'm sure its obvious that there is a shift in the quality unfortunately. I tried to keep the style similar.
Just wanted something quick to throw up here. Finished it off in my break period between classes.
