Rainbow Dash stared at the typewriter on her desk.
She looked at her closed curtains, the sun leaking through the cracks. It was a gorgeous day outside, and napping time to boot.
She looked to Tank, napping on her bed, his copter still attached in case of cloud-floor related emergencies. She couldn't take him out for practice either.
She looked at the locked door. No one must know.
Sunshine.
Napping.
Flying.
None of it.
Rainbow Dash bit her lip and poked at the largest button. A solid *clack* came out and the page moved a space.
Nothing exploded. She nodded for her own benefit, and set to typing.
Hooves didn't make this easy. But it was something that needed to be done, and by Celestia if she didn't do it she knew nopony would. It was a task so sacred she had to do it herself--she could not risk trusting it to a soul--not Spike, not even Twilight. Neigh, she had to do this alone. It was her holy quest.
Rainbow Dash was working on a Daring Do Fan Fiction.
She had heard the call when she had been at the Library with Twilight last week. Rainbow had nearly read through all of the Daring Do series and had bemoaned aloud how lame it was. Why did such an awesome story have to end?
Twilight had chuckled. "Well, the author has to sleep sometime, Rainbow Dash. And there's only so much one pony can write. There are plenty of other books you can read, though; and there is plenty of awesome to go around."
Rainbow recalled her exact words: "I doubt it."
Twilight had frowned. "Well, I can try to convince you to read them after you're done. I suppose, though, if you're really stuck on Daring Do I could introduce you to the Canterlot Fan Fiction Center..."
And then the bells had sounded, the lightbulb gone off, the torch set aflame. Twilight explained everything Rainbow Dash needed to hear. The rights to the story belonged to the author--no pony could write and sell something based on work done by another pony. But sometimes inspiration will strike, and a pony has a really good idea for a story that they just can't stand not sharing. They could then write it and submit it to the CFFC, where it could be made available to any other fans of the inspirational work--and even potentially to the creator her or himself. Because of the rights, no bits could or would be charged for any ponies to read the stories; unless the original author paid the lucky fan the greatest honor and chose to acknowledge the story as part of their universe--sometimes re-writing it, but always acknowledging the loyal fan who gave them the idea.
Rainbow Dash was the loyalest fan of the Daring Do books ever. There was no questioning that. And Twilight's rant on Fan Fictions included the standards set by the CFFC--they did have a filtering process, and often times ponies would "shamelessly insert themselves into the universe so lovingly crafted by the author - "
At which point Rainbow Dash had promptly flown out of the library, so taken by her muse that she absolutely had to act.
The typewriter was a relic she had bummed out of Sofas and Quills for a few bits. But putting up with the gritty piece of equipment was oh so worth it. Because she had the best. Idea. Ever.
Daring Do was an awesome Pegasus who discovered awesome things that nopony thought really existed. She went to awesome places and did awesome things. But there was one thing that even Daring Do hadn't done, or seen, or discovered. Something so. Awesome. that Rainbow Dash couldn't stand the thought of Daring Do not discovering it. And it just so happened that she knew one blue and polychromatic mare who was the leading expert on that exact phenomenon.
That mare was herself. And the phenomenon--The Sonic Rainboom.
So far, that was all she had typed; the title "Daring Do and the Sonic Rainboom". She continued to stare at the blank page, fretting over how to tell this epic. Any time before she would have scoffed at the notion of such egg-headdery, but that was before she had quite understood the importance of writing. She imagined what great writers before her must have felt as they sat down to pen their masterpieces. She wondered if her story would change a pony's life. If it would change many ponies lives.
She shook her head to clear it of those distractions. Nothing mattered now. Nothing but the story.
She took a deep breath and cleared her mind. She let her thoughts ebb and flow, felt the tug and pull on her heartstrings, letting them guide her mind to the path she knew she must take. It was all too important.
She felt a lightness in her soul, and she felt the time was right. She set her hooves down upon the ancient device, and made a few slow, tentative keystrokes.
"The...blazing...hot...sun...shown...down...upon...the...spires...of..."
Rainbow grinned. She was in it, now. She had it. She was moving. Words continued to flow like a beautiful river from her mind through her hooves and onto the paper before her.
"Daring...Do...looked...on...in...awe...at...the...magnificent...sight...before...her..."
They spilled, they tumbled, they flowed. She typed and kept on typing. She wrote and kept on writing, watching her story unfold before her. It was a kind of magic unlike the feel of the wind on her skin, or the feel of busting a cloud with a good buck. It was a new magic, a special magic, one that enraptured her. She could do this. She was doing this--and it would be glorious.
Celestia lowered the sun.
Luna raised the moon.
Luna lowered the moon, and Celestia returned the sun to the sky.
The light from the fiery orb shone through enough of the window curtains in the room of Rainbow Dash to wake the tortoise, who only just now realized he hadn't been fed or flown yesterday. He powered up his little gyrocopter and buzzed over to his mistress, bumping her lightly with his head. She make a loud snrking noise and jerked her head up. She yawned, patted the trustworthy Tank on his head, chided herself for her forgetfulness, brought him a plate of greens to munch on, and looked back at where she had fallen asleep.
The memories fell on her like an avalanche. She remembered what she had fallen asleep doing--she remembered her sacred quest. She remembered all but finishing it.
There was but one phase remaining. She had to take her tome to Twilight, and see that it was submitted.
She grabbed the papers quickly - but carefully - in her forehooves and took off quickly for the treehouse, leaving behind a rainbow trail that was impressive but nothing compared to the epic feat that she had to share with the world, if only in a story.
She took the time to use the doorway, her mind on extra care for the precious bundle in her hooves.
"Twilight! I have something important for you."
The purple mare stuck her head around a corner. "Oh? What is it?"
Rainbow Dash took a moment to look around and make sure that there was nopony lurking at the windows or about to walk in the door. She lowered her head and spoke in a conspiratorial whisper.
"You remember what you told me about the CFFC?"
Twilight nodded.
"Well, I realized that none of the Daring Do books would ever cover something as awesome as the Sonic Rainboom, and I also realized that that was super lame. So I took matters into my own hooves - " she lifted the papers she had removed from the writer and peered over them. Twilight spent not a moment before snatching them away and crooning with delight.
"Rainbow DASH I had no idea you were so interested in the world of Fan Fiction! You took off so fast yesterday I thought you'd just gotten bored. I now see that you had heard the calling of a muse. Of course I'll get your story submitted for you, I would be honored." Rainbow Dash blushed and Twilight beamed. "...But, do you mind? I'd love to read it first."
Rainbow Dash waved a hoof dismissively. "Be my guest. But be careful, it might almost get too awesome. I don't want you to, like, sprain your brain or something."
Twilight chuckled and found a cushion to sit on. "Don't be silly, my brain doesn't strain easy. Now, let's see..."
Daring Do and the Sonic Rainboom
The blazing hot sun shown down upon the spires of Cloudsdale. Daring Do looked on in awe at the magnificent sight before her. A bright blue pegasus pony awesome enough to rival all the discoveries Daring Do had ever made was flying through the air in the most awesome manner. That is very fast. As in like REALLY fast. Capital letters fast.
This pony was so fast she was leaving a trail of rainbows behind her. Daring Do couldn't believe it. Cloudsdale fliers were great, sure, but could one really be THIS good?
Even better than that - this one was AWESOME. Daring Do stared with her mouth open as the magnificent Rainbow Dash peeled through the sky at such incredible speeds it could only be described with lots of adrenaline and awesomeness. She was flying so fast, when she pulled out of her dive a big boom happened and a giant circular rainbow spiraled out from her turning point.
A Sonic Rainboom! No way. This was just too awesome. Daring Do had to meet this pony.
She flew up to the cloud where the amazing Rainbow Dash was setting down, exhausted from such an awesome display.
"Hey, Rainbow Dash, that was totally awesome. I should know because I do awesome stuff all the time. I'm practically an expert on awesomeness."
"Cool." Rainbow Dash replied. "We should totally be friends then. And stuff."
Daring Do nodded.
Then they bumped hooves and went out for tacos, because that is what awesome ponies do.
The End.
Twilight flipped through the remaining pages. They were all blank except for a curious stain in the corner that changed slightly in size as you flipped down through them, getting bigger near the bottom. It was puddle shaped.
"Well...Rainbow Dash..." She looked at the expectant face of her friend. Twilight knew all to well the depression that rejection so early on in creative endeavors. Irregardless of what she had just read, she couldn't do that to Rainbow Dash.
"Well...I think you were right. This story has too much...awesome. I don't think any pony could handle it, except for maybe you. Because, you know, it was just...too much awesome in one story. Yes. I think we should uh...lock it up. Or burn it. So that nobody breaks their brain on accident. It's for everypony's safety."
Rainbow Dash groaned. "Ugggh, fine. Writing is hard."
Author's Note
Silly ideas, go to bed. I'm too sick to be writing.
