Prologue: The Odd One Out.
It was another beautifull day in the Hive. The wind was blowing, the sun was burning, the changelings were buzzing and Queen Chrysalis was discussing with Princess Twilight. All in all, not counting the discussion, it was a beautifull day. Or at least that's what every normal changeling thought. But there was one who thought different. He always thought different. After all, he was an individual, unlike his brothers and sisters. And he was finding this to be a horribly boring day.
His looks were also slightly different from the common drone. He was leaner and had stronger wings. His eye color was blue like the sea instead of blue as the sky. The same counted for his wings. And unlike every other drone who kept shaving their manes and tails of, he actually had let them grow. His messy mane was black with grey highlights and reached halfway his neck. His tail was also messy and had the same colors as his mane, reaching halway to the ground. Oh, and he has a bored expression on his face instead of one without emotions. But his biggest difference is that he isn't connected to the hivemind. Why is that? It's because he's an individual.
But he still served the Queen. Why? Because he'd be even more bored if he didn't. The only thing to do in the Hive is serve the Queen, sit around or sleep. And he'd rather do at least something instead of dying of boredom. Even if it is really boring.
"945." That's him. Drones don't have names. They have ranks. And he was one of the lowest.
"Yes?" he responded. His voice is lower than most changelings and less scratchy.
"The Queen ordered to come to the throne room." number 67 said, her voice devoid of emotion. She motioned him to follow her and walked away, not waiting for a response.
"Okay." he responded sullenly. The last time the Queen called for him, it was to lecture him about how he should be more devoted. And that ended with him cleaning out the nursery. And while adult drones do everything the Queen says, newborns won't do anything unless they want to. The worst thing about seeing them play, is knowing that the Queen will make them just as mindless as all the others. How? By breaking their minds. After she does that, they'll NEED her. Because without a Queen, a drone will be as intelligent as a cabbage.
Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Why isn't he mindless as well? It's because she couldn't break him. She couldn't enter his mind. He was what she called 'already broken'. She usually got rid of such changelings, but she spared him. Why? He doesn't Know. And he doesn't want to know either. All he cares about is that he's still an individual and that's that.
He and 67 reached the throne room. "My Queen, I have brought number 945." the female drone said.
"Bring him in." was the response. The Queen sounded... 'Chipper? Yeah that's the word. She's usually more grumpy.'
"Don't worry I can come in myself." And so he did. He opened the big door and walked towards the Queen. He didn't expect her to be grinning slightly. He expected the violet alicorn next to her even less.
