When a seemingly emotionless stallion with a dark past arrives in Equestria, the Elements of Harmony find themselves thrust into the fight of their lives against the monstrous and sadistic king of the windigoes.

Checkmate Vigarde is an anomaly.

He doesn't speak to the other ponies of Ponyville, and he shows little to no emotion to any of them, regardless of who they are or what they do. In an effort to discover more of who this mysterious stallion is, Rainbow Dash decides to pry into his past by following him to his homeland after the Hearth's Warming Eve performance.

What she finds, however, proves to be a monster, as Checkmate's dark past threatens to overtake all of Equestria, and she and her friends find themselves on a quest in order to stop the sadistic king of the windigoes from destroying all that they hold dear, and ending all in ice and shadow.

However, things are not as simple as they seem, and as the tale of one of the most dangerous creatures in all of existence begins to unveil itself, the strange band of heroes find themselves in a fight not just for the fate of Equestria, nor the fate of Checkmate's land, but for the entire world.
