Chapters Chapter One: A Day in the Life
Another beautiful day in Manehattan. At least, it would be, if I didn’t have to work in the morning. Such is the illustrious life of a DJ I suppose. Sometimes I enjoy when my fans chant my name as I enter the club. “Mad Wubs! Mad Wubs! Mad Wubs!” Other times I wish there was another DJ who could drop their beats that they love so much. I deserve a vacation sometimes. Who am I kidding? Where would I go? All the hotspots in Equestria have ponies who would just tell me that I’m a shell of my old self. The worst part is they’d be right.
I walked over to the tattered calendar hanging on the indigo walls of my Upper Manehattan apartment. “What day is it?” The calendar had a massive red stain covering everything from the fifteenth to the end of the month. The stain looked like...wine? When did I have wine? “The after party. This place was a mess after that. I should remember not to volunteer to host a party next time I start to “go with the flow,” as I would say.” I think I said that. The whole night was a blur. I must’ve been drunk off my ass.
I guess it’s a good thing I never have ponies over who would actually think less of me if they saw the shape of my humble abode. Yea, it’s...a good thing. After all, everypony I think something of has already left me or vice versa. I don’t need them anyway. I’ve got the club. Sigh. Maybe I should’ve never left Canterlot. That’s a thought for another day I suppose. Off to bed.
“What day is it?”
I sat up in bed and stared at the calendar across the room. “Right.” Luckily, the work schedule in my nightstand has just what I needed. I opened the top drawer of the gray, wine-stained nightstand. “Are you serious? Is there anything in my house that wouldn’t lead somepony to believe I’m an alcoholic?” The schedule was at the bottom of a stack of bills I had paid but kept as a reminder as to why I can’t quit working. My previous assumptions were proved wrong when I pulled it out and closed the drawer. It had no dates. Just the days I’m supposed to work written down on a row of seven blank boxes.
“Apparently, I work every day this week.” I tossed the schedule to the floor and got up from my bed. My reflection watched me with its tired, golden eyes as I stumbled to the bathroom. My mane was a mess. My horn lit up with a gold glow akin to my eyes. A comb covered in the same glow flowed through my mane. The clubgoers seemed to take a liking to what I did to it. Crimson with a teal streak zigzagging its way down my head to the ends of my tail. They say it goes well with my coat, which looked like what you’d get if you mixed purple with grey. I wasn’t sure if it was dull or regal. Some ponies thought it would be so...swag, I think they said, to tattoo a streak from the end of my mane to the start of my tail. I told them I didn’t know what “swag” meant.
Fully groomed, I trotted out of the building, feeling more positive now that I wasn’t half-asleep. A few bystanders noticed me as I walked down the street. They waved their hooves at me. I smiled and kept on trotting. The club where I worked was just a few blocks from where I lived. The famous club, Music of Manehattan, was known far and wide, so I heard. As far as I was concerned, we were leaving the impression that Manehattan only listened to dubstep and techno. Which, for me, it may as well be true. It’s all I’ve heard for years.
“Welcome back, Wubs!”
I turned to see the club’s manager grinning at me, probably imagining all the money I’ll make him today while he sits in his office “managing.” “It’s nice to be back, sir.” To be honest, I didn’t really like him, but as the stack of paid bills kept reminding me, I must work. “What’s it like inside? Many ponies come around to see me?”
The manager had the impression I was excited. I haven’t been excited in a long time. “The place is packed! Filled with ponies who came to see you spin the records, as usual!” I could tell he was trying to get me pumped. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t working a bit. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of adoration every now and then?
We walked towards the door together. I could hear ponies in the waiting line cheering for me. A tall, well-built stallion stood at the door. I looked up as we reached him. “Hey, Big T. How’s it hanging?” Big T wasn’t a pony of many words.
“Good.”
See? “That’s nice. Mind letting us in? Gotta entertain the masses and pump up the jams.” I liked Big T. He and I saw eye to eye on most things. We occasionally get drinks when the club closes early. The manager, never a pony to miss a chance to earn some extra bits, only closes early when the house is empty.
“Of course, Wubs. Give em’ a good show.”
“Thanks, Big T. Catch ya later.”
As we entered the club, far enough from the door so that nopony outside could hear, the manager leaned in close to me and asked, “Why does everypony call him Big T?” At first, I thought he was joking, then I realized how serious he was when I saw the confused look on his face.
I laughed. This took the manager by surprise as I was never one to laugh in his presence. “We call him Big T because we’re all too scared to ask him what the “T” stands for. You hired him. Don’t you know his name?”
The manager laughed too. “Actually, it’s been so long, I can’t remember anymore. I started calling him Big T years ago when you started working here. Never knew why. Guess I picked it up from you.” This was actually a nice conversation we were having. The manager and I don’t typically get along like this. It’s...nice.
“Well, I’m gonna hop on stage now.”
“Knock em’ dead!”
I walked across the room bathed in the light of flashing floor panels and strobe lights. All eyes fell on me as I climbed onto the stage and put a hoof to the record. The room was dead silent. Everypony knew that when the music stopped, one of two things was about to happen: the party was over or it was just getting started.
“Are you ponies ready to party?” My shout echoed through the room. The crowd let out a thundering shout and a resounding “YEAH!” “Alright! First track I’m gonna spin for you lovely ponies is from a certain somepony you all know and love. Here it comes, the legendary beats of DJ Pon-3!” As the music started playing, I put on my headset. The sounds of her music flooded into my ears. Everything else drowned out as I lost myself in the rhythm.
I heard these sounds live once, when I moved to Manehattan. I wasn’t always a DJ. In fact, I was a violinist. But when I heard the beat and saw the mare who was making them, I felt a love for her music that superseded my own. Well...I thought it was for the music, but all these years since feel like a blur. My heart just isn’t in the beats like hers was.
The night dragged on and I kept playing the music they wanted to hear. If I had a say in it, I’d throw in some classical every now and then, but that’s not what the people want. That’s not what makes the money, and after all, the money is all that matters around here. We all know it. Everypony knows it. Everypony except the customers. That’s why they’re the customers and not the ponies at the theater down the street.
Closing time. The manager came out of the office and shut off the effects. Now the only lights shining were the fluorescent bulbs hanging from the ceiling. “Closing time!” Ponies started the make a beeline for the door when the manager got up on stage next to me and said, “Don’t forget to come by tomorrow for the debut of a new track by none other than our own Mad Wubs!” The ponies smiled and went on their merry ways.
“This place will be so packed tomorrow, we may have to send guests out once they hear your song and play it again with a new crowd.” The manager was ecstatic at the thought of all the business he would get. I, on the other hand, was apprehensive because I’d have to actually play the song instead of putting the record on and listening.
“We can only hope. More exposure means my career will launch sooner.” I saw his smile fade as he heard my words. Bye bye business. Hello now hiring.
“What’s the rush? You’re fans want you here as long as they can keep you. This is like your home away from home. Don’t leave it til you’re ready.” He didn’t care about me. He cared about himself. Just as so many other ponies in these big cities do.
“I know. I was just thinking that it’d be nice to travel some while I play.”
“Why don’t you just take a vacation?” Yeah right. Like you’d ever give me one.
Before I could argue this, a white pony clad in golden armor entered the club. Behind him was Big T, who was looking especially confused. The pony spoke, “Where is the pony who goes by the name Mad Wubs?”
I stepped down from the stage. “That would be me. To what do I owe the pleasure of being greeted by Celestia’s guard?”
The manager looked to the armor clad pony. “Celestia’s guard? What do you want? Can’t you see we’re closing up?”
The guard didn’t make eye contact with him. Instead he kept watching me and said, “I have no business with you or your establishment. I am here, under Celestia’s orders, to retrieve the pony called Mad Wubs and bring him to Canterlot.”
Now, the manager looked to me. “Boy! What did you do?”
I was as confused as him. “I didn’t do anything. I don’t know what Celestia wants with me, but it looks like I have no choice but to go with him.”
“B-but what about the debut tomorrow? We can’t just call it off!”
“Sorry, looks like we’ll have to. Maybe when I get back, we can reschedule it.” This actually plays in my favor since I forgot to write the song. “I’ll see you soon.” Maybe. I crossed the room to the guard. The manager’s eyes followed me, the shock never leaving his face. We passed by Big T and I said goodbye to the club. The trains wouldn’t be running again for a few hours, so I had a little more time in Manehattan. A little more time before I see Celestia again. I was starting to get excited now.
The guard escorted me back to my home and waited while I gathered my things. Not that I had much to gather. Most of the stuff here was in poor condition or simply junk. The glow of my horn faded as I placed a suitcase on the bed. I placed a few items for personal hygiene in the bag. I looked around the see if I had forgotten anything. My gaze fell upon a sack of bits. I’d probably need money.
I walked over to the old leather sack and lifted it with my horn. Under the sack was a book. It had a note attached to the inside of the cover. I couldn’t quite make out what it said, even after all these years. I stared at the book for a while before finally deciding to take it with me. I packed them both into the suitcase and closed it.
The guard noticed this and asked, “Are you ready?” He looked slightly impatient. Perhaps I shouldn’t have looked at that book for so long.
I looked at him and back to the bed. “Yes.” Horn now glowing as I lifted the suitcase, I turned towards him and started in his direction, but stopped when something caught my eye. I lifted the violin that was carelessly placed on the floor, placed it in its case, and brought it over to where we were standing. “I’m ready.”
We exited the building and made our way to the station. He stayed silent, and it began to make me uncomfortable. So I broke the silence. “What does Celestia want me for anyway?”
His gait never slowed. “I honestly don’t know. The princess said that it’s urgent and must be done immediately, so I came here on the first train. I didn’t find you until night fell. Canterlot is big, but nowhere near confusing as Manehattan.”
“I know that’s right. I got lost a few times when I first moved here from Canterlot.”
“You lived in Canterlot?”
“Yeah. A long time ago. I must’ve left when I was about six or seven.”
“That young? Did your parents have business here?”
“I came alone. I’ve been alone since I came to Manehattan.”
“Your parents let you leave Canterlot? Just like that?”
“My parents...my parents aren’t alive. They haven’t been since before I left.”
“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that.” The rest of the trip to the station was dead silent. Even in this bustling city, the early hours were quiet enough to hear your own thoughts, and I sure had a lot to think about. I don’t know why Celestia wants me back in Canterlot, but she must have a good reason.
We arrived at the station when sunlight broke the sky and illuminated the city I was leaving behind. We got our tickets and boarded the train. I asked the guard pony if I could sit alone. He obliged but made sure to be close enough to see me if I tried to sneak away. I had no intention to, but it’s nice to know he doesn’t trust me. Hell, if I was him, I wouldn’t trust me.
I had the good fortune of going unnoticed by the other passengers. Turns out anypony leaving Manehattan doesn’t partake in the activities that my fans do. Who would’ve guessed. It had been a long night. I drifted off to sleep while reading the book I had taken, Magic for Beginners . When I awoke, the magnificent city of Canterlot greeted me. I watched as we approached the city and pulled into the station. How long has it been? How long since I stepped hoof in Canterlot? The guard pony escorted me off the train, and as I inhaled the fresh air, I knew it. Oh yeah. Now , I’m excited.
Chapter Two: Unfamiliar Surroundings
The air in Canterlot felt to be of an entirely different caliber than that of Manehattan. Much less...metropolitan. This is a city I once called home, but everything was different. Granted, I haven’t been here for years, but I didn’t think it would change so much. It’s all a little unsettling.
“I’m going to need you to follow me now, sir.”
I jerked my body around in surprise. The guard pony who had accompanied me since leaving the club was standing behind me. I could tell from his blank stare and drooping eyelids that he was tired. Perhaps I could persuade him to let me look around a bit before I go to the castle.
I hope this works. “I’d be glad to, but I was kinda hoping I could um...look around the city first.” Oh no. I hesitated. This isn’t going to work.
He continued to maintain his empty gaze. “But Celestia told me to bring you to the palace immediately, once we arrive.”
“Don’t worry. I’m sure it will be fine. If she says anything, I’ll tell her it’s my fault.”
“Well. I suppose it couldn’t hurt. Provided you go to the palace once you’re finished.”
Sweet! It worked! “I will! I promise!”
The guard sat on a nearby bench, took off his helmet, and fell asleep. Well, looks like I’m free to explore. I don’t think I’ll be able to persuade a fully conscious guard though. I doubt Celestia would tell them about my appearance. What reason would she have to? It’s not like she’d expect me to do anything wrong. I think.
I departed from the station and quickly trotted to the town plaza. The city looked every bit as amazing as I remembered. The buildings may have changed, but the streets were the same as when I was a kid. There was a fountain in the plaza’s center that I didn’t recall being there. I approached it and looked at the water. My reflection reminded me of something else that was different in this city. Me. There’d be no way anypony here would recognize me, because they haven’t seen me since I was little. Assuming there’s anypony still here that knew me.
I broke eye contact with my reflection. I couldn’t bear to dwell on these thoughts any longer. A book store caught my eye as I turned away from the fountain. Maybe I should get a gift for Celestia. It has been some time since I left Canterlot. She probably isn’t happy with me, so this may soften the blow of my upcoming lecture. But...what could I possibly get her that she doesn’t already have. She has the entire royal library!
Before I could decide whether or not to attempt to scour the store, somepony behind me laid their hoof on my shoulder. I slowly turned my head and saw the tall black stallion glaring at me. He was an earth pony. His mane, covered by a dark blue helm. His tail, a brilliant silver. His armor told me he was a member of Luna’s guard.
“You . You are supposed to be at the palace. With Celestia.” He was not amused at my ditching of the guard pony from earlier.
“Sir, I’m very sorry. I just wanted to see the city.”
“You’ve seen the city before.”
“Uh yes, I know. I just uh wanted to see what was new. Wait. You recognize me? Did Celestia tell you about me?”
“She told me you were supposed to be at the palace, and to find you when you didn’t show up. A description wasn’t necessary. I can’t forget your face even if I tried.”
“Um I’m sorry. Do I know you?”
I must’ve said something funny because he started laughing. “Of course you do! And I know you! Do you really not remember ol’ Loose Cannon?”
“Cannon?! Is that really you? I haven’t seen you in—"
He cut me off. “We both know how long it’s been.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you. I guess you really haven’t changed after all. You were old then, and you’re old now. My memory must’ve been foggy, I suppose.”
“Old? Watch your tongue, boy. I’m still young enough to protect Canterlot and Princess Luna. I’ll keep doing so until the day I die! I’ll never be old!”
“Mid-life crisis?”
“You have no idea. Now, come with me. The Princess is waiting.”
Cannon led me through the city. We were left with an uncomfortable silence not unlike the one that guard pony and I shared the night before. “So, Cannon, how’s life been since—”
He cut me off again. “Since you left Canterlot? Things have been...unpredictable. The whole debacle with Shining Armor and Princess Cadence’s wedding was something. Then, Twilight becomes a princess. I don’t think anypony but Celestia saw that coming.”
“Twilight always did have something special about her. I certainly never expected to hear of her becoming a princess though. Oh! What’s Luna like?”
“Luna is magnificent as the night sky. As beautiful too.”
“Sounds like somepony has a crush. You always did prefer the night. Even before Luna returned. I imagine Celestia was relieved to have her sister back.”
“Don’t speak of things you don’t know, boy.”
I couldn’t help but giggle at the way he blushed at my comment. We neared the palace, and as we reached the top of the stairs leading to the door, Cannon stopped.
“This is where we part ways. Say hello to Twilight for me.”
“She’s in Canterlot?”
“No, she’s in Ponyville.”
“Oh ok. Wait. What?” I watched as Cannon turned and began walking away. “I’m going to Ponyville? Cannon! Wait!” It was too late. He hauled ass out of here as fast as he could. Almost as if he made a mistake. “I suppose I’ll go in then.”
The inside of the palace was even more amazing than the outside. I found it somewhat perplexing how I’m still finding wonder in a place I’ve seen so many times before. Without a guard to guide me, I had no idea where to go though. The palace was so big that I couldn’t remember how to get to the throne room.
I began to wander around the corridors and hoped Celestia put up signs while I was gone. When I had walked around for thirty minutes or so, I gave up on my hopes of finding a large door marked “Throne Room.” Surprisingly, I encountered nopony while I engrossed myself in this maze of a building. Just when I thought all hope of me not getting chastised for eternity was lost, I heard a voice call out in the direction I was headed.
“Hey, is that—” I heard one voice say. It sounded female.
“It is! Hey, Wubs!” shouted another voice. This one was male, and clearly recognized me.
I approached the two ponies with apprehension. I wasn’t entirely ready for a fan meeting, but I was also hopelessly lost. As I neared the two, I quickly realized that they were no fans. Before me stood two ponies sporting striped manes. One with a pink coat and a mane of purple, pink, and yellow. One with a white coat and a mane comprised of several shades of blue.
I bowed before them. “Princess Cadence. Prince Shining Armor. How nice to see you.”
Cadence looked down at me and giggled. “You know you don’t have to bow to us, little one. We’re all friends here.”
I stood up, and looked at Cadence angrily. “Cadence! I’m not little anymore! That much should be obvious.”
“Oh, I know. You’re all grown up and on your own now. I just like to remember when you were cute and playful.”
“Cadence, you can’t treat him like a kid anymore. He may have been one before, but he isn’t now,” said Shining Armor, coming to my rescue.
“I know, Shining, but when I see him I can’t help but remember foalsitting when he and Twilight had playdates. They were so cute together. She’s still single, you know.” Cadence gestured towards me and winked.
“Cadence!” Shining and I exclaimed in unison. Both of us now blushing.
“Twilight and I aren’t like that. Besides, I think we all know that she isn’t exactly seeking relationships of that sort,” I retorted calmly. “By the way, I’m sorry that I couldn’t make it to your wedding.”
Shining turned to me, now calm as well. “It’s alright. We know you were busy. Besides, you would’ve been caught up in something big. You could’ve been hurt if you were here, so it’s best you didn’t come.”
Cadence chimed in. “Your visit to the Crystal Kingdom more than made up for it. I had such a lovely time catching up with you. We should do it again sometime.”
“We should. Maybe, by then, I’ll have something more interesting to share,” I replied very matter-of-factly.
“Don’t say that. I loved hearing about your time in Manehattan. But now, I’m afraid Shining and I have some business to take care of. So we must be off.”
“Wait!” I shouted. Cadence looked at me quizzically. “I was hoping you could guide me to the throne room. I’m supposed to meet Celestia and I can’t remember the palace layout.”
She giggled again. “Certainly. Come with me.” She turned to Shining Armor. “Shining, you go tell the guards that I’ll be along shortly.”
“Don’t be long. They’ll start telling me stories about when they were my age,” Shining replied jokingly.
I’ve found myself being escorted three times in the past twenty-four hours. It wasn’t bad having somepony to rely on for a change, but it wasn’t reassuring my hopes that this whole thing is nothing more than Celestia wanting me to visit. Then again, she wouldn’t send a guard for something like that. Just what am I in for?
We reached what I assumed to be the throne room by the massive doors. Cadence turned to me and smiled. “Here we are. I’ll be going then. Say hello to Twilight for me.” Again with Twilight. What does everypony know that I don’t?
I entered the throne room as Cadence went on her way. It was huge. I couldn’t think of a time I had been in this room before. I had seen the doors, but never dared enter them. I always felt as though I was unworthy of stepping hoof in such a place. But now, here I am, summoned to this very room by the Princess herself.
The Princess, however, was nowhere to be seen. I took this chance to examine the room. I felt like a young colt again, adventuring through the palace, and exploring territories unknown. I approached the throne, paused, and looked around to make sure I was completely alone. I climbed up onto the throne and looked out the windows. The windows!
I had heard about these stained-glass windows from Twilight, but naturally I had never seen them. There were five of them, each depicting an important event in Equestrian history. I still found it hard to believe that Twilight had done so much for Equestria. She was truly destined for greatness, I guess.
As I continued to sit alone in the throne room, it occurred to me just how long I had been sitting here. Where’s Celestia? She should’ve been here when I arrived. I arrived late! What excuse could she have for not being here? For me to be upset over her delayed arrival was rather hypocritical, but I expect more from a princess.
As I contemplated this, I heard a sound from the other side of the door. I swiveled my head in the door’s direction and noticed it had begun to open ever so slightly. A hoof adorned in gold stepped through the opening. It was time. As the door slowly opened, I turned to face the princess that entered through it.
“Princess Celestia, it’s been awhile,” I said, bowing before her.
“Indeed it has. I had heard you took up bowing since we last met,” she said with a smile. “I apologize for my tardiness, but they needed me at Cadence’s meeting. It appears your own tardiness played into both our hands.”
“So it seems. If you don’t mind me getting straight to the point, what is it you need of me? Surely, this isn’t just some visit.”
“We’ll get to that in a moment. First, there’s somepony I’d like you to meet.” Celestia looked back through the door. “Luna, come in. There’s no need to be shy.”
The dark blue alicorn entered as her ethereal mane sparkled like the night sky. Cannon was no liar. She was stunning. Luna took her place beside her sister and looked at me. “It’s very nice to meet you. I wish the circumstances were better though,” she said.
“I don’t understand. Celestia, what does she mean?” I asked. This whole day has been a puzzle that I just can’t put together.
“How have you been?” Celestia said, clearly not listening to me.
“Celestia, please, I’m so confused.”
"Have you been taking care of yourself properly?"
“Celestia! Listen!” Is she ignoring me or just not focusing?
“Is there a special mare in your life?”
“Teacher! Listen to me!”
Celestia’s eyes widened as she heard me. The embarrassment showing very clearly on her face. “I’m sorry. It’s just been so long. I had so much I wanted to ask you.”
“That can wait. Please, tell me. Why did you summon me to Canterlot?”
Celestia’s gaze grew rather intense compared to the happy-go-lucky disposition she had when she entered the room. “Right. I suppose this must be addressed. You, my student, are about to fulfill a great service to Equestria.”
Chapter Three: Beyond My Abilities
I heard Celestia’s words, but didn’t know how to respond to them. What “great service” could I possibly help with? I’m a DJ. A loner. From what I’ve heard, friendship is a key component in stopping evil in Equestria. It’s not exactly something I capitalize on.
“Princess, I don’t mean to be rude,” I began, “but I don’t think I’m the right pony for whatever you need help with. Maybe, you should ask Twilight and her friends instead.”
“I am confident that you are the pony for the job,” she replied with the utmost certainty.
“Well, I don’t think somepony like me is up for it.”
“You haven’t even heard what it is I ask of you.” Celestia moved to her throne and sat on it. “Now, Luna, if you would be so kind.” She gestured towards her sister, who then nodded in response.
Luna’s horn began to glow as the light vanished from the room. For a moment, the three of us stood in complete darkness. Celestia’s face was made visible by the light emanating from her own horn. “This darkness is Equestria’s fate if you do not heed my call,” she said. Her tone was grave.
The bright, golden light of Celestia’s horn produced several small lights that dispersed around the room. Each took a different shape. Some I recognized, others I didn’t. Celestia’s eyes first fell upon one of a certain draconequus. This was becoming worse with each passing minute.
“Do you know of Discord?” Celestia asked.
“Yes, of course. I can’t think of anypony that doesn’t,” I replied as I examined the other images she had created. “Isn’t he being rehabilitated? Don’t tell me he’s causing trouble again.”
“No, but something long forgotten has me concerned. It is something Discord once controlled. Something he once called home.” She looked to a second light, depicting what appeared to be some sort of castle, that I assumed would be rather large in person. “This structure is known as the Cathedral of Chaos. It is a fortress of sorts that, if need be, can become mobile.”
“I don’t understand. If Discord isn’t using it, then what’s the problem?”
“The problem is that it’s moving.”
“Moving where?”
“To Equestria. As it is now, it should be nearing the border, and will soon enter our lands.”
“How? If Discord isn’t moving it, how could it possibly be coming to Equestria?”
“Whether there is somepony else who may control it, we do not know. At this time, we have no choice but to assume that it is the result of ancient, chaotic magic stored in the Cathedral long ago by Discord. It is very possible that he placed some sort of spell so that, in the event he could not return to it, it would return to him.”
“Why not just ask Discord to disable it?” I asked. Once I uttered that question, I realized how ridiculous it was.
“We cannot yet trust that Discord will not use the Cathedral, given the chance.”
Figured as much. “Then, how will you stop it?”
Now, she turned to a third image. They were...necklaces? And a tiara? “What are those?” I asked.
“To answer your first question, my sister and I cannot stop the Cathedral. As for the second, these are the Elements of Harmony.”
Luna looked to me and said, “We once used the Elements to defeat Discord and seal him in stone, however, we can no longer wield them.”
“I...I think I’ve heard about the Elements of Harmony,” I began, “from Twilight.”
“Yes, Twilight and her friends are the current bearers of the Elements. They once used them against me, when I was Nightmare Moon. Then once more, to stop Discord.”
“Then why not just ask Twilight to stop the Cathedral?”
The light returned to the room, and the images vanished. Celestia stood up from her throne and spoke, “Because this is not a task for Twilight. It is a task for you. And your friends.”
“What friends?” I asked. “You may not know this Celestia, but I didn’t exactly keep in touch with many ponies once I left Canterlot.”
“Then, I suggest you get in touch.”
“I don’t even know where anypony went or if they went anywhere at all!” This was all too much. I didn’t ask for this. I’d rather just return to my boring life in Manehattan.
“Perhaps, you should begin in Ponyville, where you can speak to Twilight.”
“I suppose that could work.” Wait. No, what am I saying. “But I haven’t even agreed to do this for you!”
“But, my student, you must. For the sake of Equestria.”
“There is nothing I must do! You can’t expect me to just do whatever you ask of me, just because I used to be your student. That isn’t how this works!”
Luna’s eyes grew somewhat sympathetic. “I implore you. Please, give it some thought. I understand that this is something rather big to ask of you, and you’re probably feeling overwhelmed. Could you, at least, think on it? Alone, if you would prefer.”
Celestia approached me and softly lifted my chin with her hoof so that our eyes met. They showed kindness. As they always had. “I have more faith in you than you know. I have an idea. Stay here in the palace tonight, and give our request some more thought. In the morning, you can give us your answer. If you still choose not to help, I will not force you.”
There was something about her tone that calmed me down. “That...sounds acceptable. Will you show me to my room?”
“I’m afraid Luna and I have some business to attend to, but I will send for Princess Cadence. She can escort you. I believe she wishes to speak to you as well.”
“Um ok then,” I said. “Should I wait for her here?”
“That would be most appreciated.”
As the two princesses exited the room, Celestia stopped and said, “Sleep well, my student. I know you’ll make the right choice.” Then, they were gone.
You may know that, Celestia, but I don’t. How can they expect me to do this? I’m nopony special. I’m no Twilight Sparkle. I’ve known that for the longest time. I’m...I’m just a one trick pony, and that trick is playing music. Not making it. Just...playing it. Who am I kidding? Why did I even agree to stay?
My wait on Cadence was much shorter than that of Celestia. The pink alicorn princess entered the throne room. She wasn’t smiling anymore. Did Celestia tell her about the Cathedral? Maybe, she could give me her take on all of this.
“Cadence, may I ask you something?” I asked.
“If it’s about the Cathedral, I already know what you want to ask, and I think you should do it,” she replied. “You underestimate yourself too much. You always have.”
“That’s a little harsh, Cadence.”
“It is, but it’s true. You know I only have your best interests at heart. You said it yourself, your life isn’t interesting. Your words, not mine. So, why not try? Why not be all that you can instead of hiding?”
“I am not hiding.”
“Oh really, Wubs ? You aren’t hiding anything? We both know that isn’t true.”
“Are you implying you don’t have secrets of your own, Cadence? Nothing you keep hidden, not even from Shining Armor?”
“Are you implying that I would lie to my husband?”
“Not lie. Keep secrets from.”
“I would never! He and I are completely open with each other. Why would you even bring him up?”
“I’ve heard that secrets are common among marriages. I suppose not all have them.”
“Secrets are not what we are here to talk about. You were always excited by the idea of going on adventures. You would always say, “I’m going to be a brave prince, and protect Equestria, just like teacher.” Surely, you couldn’t have changed so much?”
“You’d be surprised how much somepony can change when they detach themselves from everything they once held dear.”
“Why would you ever want to do that? Do you truly wish to be alone? Don’t you ever miss the days when you and your friends would play superheroes in the royal garden? Don’t you ever miss the companionship?”
“Of course I do, Cadence! But those times have long since passed, and I’ve drifted too far from them to turn back now! Face it. It’s too late.”
Cadence looked upon me as Luna had earlier. I was letting my emotions run wild and they could all see the truth behind my facade. They could see the old me beginning to emerge. The problem was they wanted it back, but I didn’t. I’ve gone too far now.
“It’s never too late. I know one pony who strayed for a thousand years. She still changed. She still cares. You can too. I know it. You just need to believe in yourself, as we all do,” Cadence said, as a tear began to form. I wasn’t the only one showing their emotions, and it was starting to hurt us both.
“I’d like to go to my room now, Cadence. We can talk more there if you’d like.”
Cadence raised a hoof to wipe away her tears before they could drop. “Yes, I’d like that very much.”
Once we arrived at my room, Cadence and I sat on the bed and talked. We kept talking for hours, long after the sun had gone down. She and I talked about the old days, the new days, and the days to come. Cadence cared for me more than I ever knew. I suppose I was just too young to understand back then.
Shining is probably wondering what she’s doing, but I guess he knows where she is. This whole day...has been more than I could handle. More than I could comprehend. The Princesses seem to have quite a bit of confidence that I can do this, but I just don’t get it. How can I wield the Elements of Harmony when I haven’t the slightest clue where to find friends? New or old.
I continued to half-listen to Cadence as I pondered the whole dilemma. How could I bring myself to say no when everypony is expecting me to say yes? If I agree to undertake this quest, I’ll risk both my life and my sanity. But, if I reject Celestia’s offer, she’ll be disappointed in me. So will Cadence, Shining, Cannon, and Luna. Not to mention, the darkness Celestia mentioned. I don’t know if I can knowingly condemn Equestria. I also don’t know if I can condemn myself to the same fate by accepting. But, if what Celestia says is true, my outcome may be the same no matter which option I choose.
“And then Spike slid down the tower with the Crystal Heart. He’s grown to be quite the brave little dragon since you knew him when he was a baby,” Cadence said, as I zoned back into our conversation. “I bet King Sombra felt like a fool, losing to a little dragon like Spike.”
Her laugh and smile were charming. Shining Armor was a lucky stallion to be with my old foalsitter. “I bet he did. Even Spike is a hero of Equestria now. I’m a failure of a student, I guess.”
“No you aren’t! Will you quit being so negative? The old you would never talk like that. Besides, you aren’t the only student who never saved Equestria. If you were, Equestria would have more troubles than just the Cathedral,” Cadence reassured me.
“Sorry, I just...I’m having trouble readjusting. To you. To Celestia. To all of this.”
“Keep in mind that you will have far more you’ll have to face than just us. I imagine Twilight will have a thing or two to say to you as well.”
“Great. If Celestia isn’t going to lecture me, then Twilight surely will.”
“Twilight wants the best for you. You’re like a brother to her.”
“I doubt she made fun of Shining as much as she did me.”
“Oh, I’m sure that was all just in good fun.”
“Cadence, she still makes fun of me to this day. Sometimes, I’m not even sure if she likes me. But I keep telling myself that she does because, since I left Canterlot, she’s been the only pony I could still call a friend. The only one I could talk to.”
“You could’ve talked to me or Shining. Celestia too. She knows you better than any of us.”
“It just seemed like Twilight was my best bet. She was my best friend in Canterlot.”
“I see. Well, it’s late. I should get back to Shining Armor. You should sleep. You have a big decision to make in the morning. Sleep well, little one,” Cadence said, as she kissed my forehead. I don’t think she’ll ever think of me as more than a child until I prove it. I can’t blame her though. A child is exactly what I’ve been acting like.
Cadence left the room, and I was alone once more. I moved to the window and looked at the night sky. I never had the chance to see the stars back in Manehattan. The city lights always made them so hard to see. They were beautiful. The sparkling lights seemed to be everywhere, as if Luna herself were enveloping Equestria in her watchful gaze. It made me feel safe.
I must admit, it’s surprising that I was welcomed back so...graciously. I mean, of course you’d want to be hospitable to somepony if you need something from them, but I don’t think that’s the case here. Aside from Loose Cannon’s initial reaction to seeing me, everypony has been so kind to me. Maybe...things weren't so bad for me here. Then again, the treatment isn’t why I left.
I returned to my bed and climbed into it. As I stared at the ceiling, I couldn’t help but remember all of the things the Princesses said to me today. Another thought came to mind as well. Cannon knew that I would go to Ponyville. He must’ve known that Celestia would recommend going to speak with Twilight. Did he also know about the Cathedral of Chaos, or was it just coincidence? I can’t think of a reason why Cannon would need to know about this.
As I began to drift off to sleep, I put my mind at ease in hopes of sleeping well for a change. I found myself dreaming of a place unlike anything I’d seen. It was dark and depressing. An eerie, green light bathed the room, originating from torches mounted on the walls. It looked like dragon fire. The floor and walls were made of stone, as was the ceiling. This is no dream. This is a nightmare.
“What is this place?” I asked, not expecting to hear an answer.
“This is the Cathedral of Chaos,” responded a voice behind me. I turned around to see that it was Luna. “I apologize for intruding on your dream, but I thought it might help if you had an idea of what the Cathedral was like.”
“It’s fine, and that would help, I suppose. But I don’t understand. How could I be dreaming of the Cathedral so vividly if I’ve never been there?”
“Because my sister and I have. Once. I am projecting the image into your dreams. I also wished to speak with you privately.”
“It seems everypony does. So, why did you and Celestia go to the Cathedral of Chaos? Did you battle Discord there?”
“No, we settled our score with Discord in Canterlot. We dared to step hoof in this wretched place in hopes of convincing Discord to cease his chaotic ways and join our side. I’m sure you can deduce the results of that endeavor.”
“Right. So, was the Cathedral in Equestria when you fought Discord?”
“Yes, but following the battle, it vanished. We tried to locate it so that we may cease its operation, but that was to no avail. Now that it has returned, the opportunity to put it out of commission has as well. Alas, my sister and I no longer control the Elements of Harmony.”
“Twilight does, which is why I suggested she handle this.”
“You can’t compare yourself to Twilight forever. Trust me, I know what it’s like to feel inferior and underappreciated. The more you force this feeling upon yourself, the more it will destroy you. Focus on your strengths. Not others’.”
“That’s just it. Twilight’s talent is magic. My cutie mark is a record. I spin records. What good is a disc jockey against a magical fortress of chaos?”
“An excellent question, but you do not yet see your full potential. There can be more than one thing you’re good at. Nopony is restricted to a single forte. My sister believes you can do great things. If she believes in you, I do as well.”
“That’s kind of you to say, but in the end, it’s I who needs to believe in me. Only then can I convince myself to even attempt any of this. All the kind sentiments and words of affirmation mean nothing if I can’t even have confidence in myself.”
“Hm...you are wiser than you appear.”
“And what is that supposed to mean?”
“Apologies. I meant no offense. Rather, I was simply stating that you possess more wisdom than you let others believe.”
“Oh. Well, thank you. The manager at my job always gave the impression that he believed me to be an idiot, good for nothing more than playing music for his customers.”
“Well, he is a fool.”
“That’s something we both can agree on.”
Luna, who I’ve known for not even a day, is treating me with more kindness and care than ponies in Manehattan that I’ve known for years. Do I really want to return there and continue living my life as nothing more than an underappreciated DJ, extorted for personal gain, and used by those who call me “friend”? That life. I’ve hated that life for five long years.
No. It’s time I step out of that hell I’ve called my job, my home, and my life. This opportunity could be just what I needed. Sure, it’ll probably be dangerous. Sure, I could die. But I’ve been living, dead to the world, for so long. This is my chance to repair what I destroyed so long ago.
“Is something wrong?” Luna asked, as she lowered her head to meet my eyes.
“I’ll do it,” I replied, staring into her eyes. My gaze, more serious than ever before.
“I’m sorry. I don’t understand,” she said with a smile.
“I’ll do what I must to protect Equestria.”
“We figured as much. I’ll return your dream to you now. We shall speak again at sunrise.”
With that, the Cathedral interior faded away, and I found myself in Canterlot. The bright, blue sky above me was a much preferred replacement to that dreary room in the Cathedral. The sun shone brilliantly onto the city, its light reflecting of the golden tops of the palace towers. I saw myself, playing in the park with other young fillies and colts. This was a dream. My dream, of returning to my old self. And with Celestia as my witness, I will see that it comes true.
Chapter Four: The First Step
As morning approached, I was rudely awakened by the sound of a hoof knocking on my door. Initially, I tried to ignore it, but the knocking persisted. I threw my covers aside and answered the door. The guard looked rather impatient, but seemed rather embarrassed, as my abrupt arrival at the door caused him to punch me.
“I-I’m so sorry, sir. I just came to let you know that the Princesses are waiting for you in the throne room,” said the guard, his voice shaking.
“It’s fine. Please tell them that I’ll be there shortly,” I said. My face began to throb.
“Right away, sir. Um you may want to do something about that.” He motioned to my mane. I looked like I had just walked out of a tornado. When I looked back to the guard, there was nothing but an empty hallway.
I walked to the mirror on the other side of my room. As I combed my mane, I noticed a black eye from the guard’s punch. My journey to save Equestria hasn’t even begun, yet I’ve already received a wound, however minuscule it may be. This certainly wasn’t an ideal look for an audience with princesses, but it’d have to do.
The words of yesterday weighed heavily on my mind as I made my way to inform Celestia of my decision. While everypony’s painfully blatant revelation of the sad excuse for a life I’ve been living wasn’t exactly desired, I can’t say I’m unhappy they said what they did. The fact of the matter was they’re right. More so than I’d like to admit.
I could think of a million other ways I could fix myself. None of them involved risking my life. Of course, none of them found me in the halls of Canterlot either. I stopped. There was that massive door again. As I raised my hoof to push open the door, it dawned on me. Here lies the first step of my journey.
The first thing to greet me was Celestia’s radiant smile. I couldn’t help but feel as if Luna told her my decision. Then again, maybe she was just happy to see me. I closed the door behind me and approached the two princesses. Nopony said a word, as if we all were waiting on each other.
“How did you sleep?” asked Celestia, thankfully breaking the silence.
“I slept well,” I replied. “The beds in the palace are more comfortable than the one in my apartment in Manehattan. Plus, I had a talk with a certain somepony in my dreams.” I hesitated to say more. “Celestia, I’ve made my decision.”
“Is that so? Then, by all means, tell me.”
“Alright. I’ll do it. If you all truly believe that I’m the best pony for the job, I suppose I can’t argue.”
Celestia and Luna both started giggling. “Oh, I already knew that,” Celestia said. “Luna told me while we were waiting. I just wanted to hear it from you.”
“If this was so important, why didn’t you let me deliver the news, Luna?”
“Apologies, but we both knew what your answer would be long before you arrived in Canterlot. This was simply a formality,” she answered.
“She’s right. Even Twilight expected this from you. She’s looking forward to your visit, by the way,” said Celestia.
“Look, you all may be princesses, but you aren’t psychics,” I stated.
“We didn’t need psychic powers. We had faith. Something you seemed to have lost sight of in your recent years.”
“Right, so what should I do first when I get to Ponyville?”
“First, you must go see Twilight, and retrieve the Elements of Harmony from her. She’ll advise you on what to do from there. Now go, or you’ll miss your train.”
I left with a “good luck” from the princesses. It was time to see an old friend.
The train ride felt like forever for such a short distance. When I stepped hoof on the station platform, I wasn’t greeted by an escort. It was at that moment, it dawned on me. I had no idea where Twilight lived. I had no idea where anything was in Ponyville. That Canterlot guard I ditched would be useful right about now.
Some ponies noticed me from the club in Manehattan. They were too caught up in their curiosity as to if I was DJing for some event, so I got no directions from them. There was one pony I knew though. A mare who found my music...unpleasant, but took a liking to me for some reason. As luck would have it, she just so happened to be in the town square, where I was hopelessly seeking help.
“Rarity! Rarity, it’s me, Wubs!” I shouted, accumulating weird looks from everypony.
The stunning, white mare quickly turned around, her luxurious, purple mane flowing with the spin. Her eyes widened and her mouth produced a smile, stretching from ear to ear. I could hardly ask her for help before I found myself in her embrace. Well, she was one of the few ponies who got to know the real me, while she was on vacation in Manehattan.
“Wubsy, it’s been too long! What are you doing here in Ponyville?” she asked ecstatically. “Didn’t you say you’d never leave Manehattan?”
I forgot about the nickname Rarity so affectionately gave me, and I reluctantly accepted. “Actually, I’ve been looking for Twilight. Celestia told me to speak with her, but I got kinda lost.”
“Celestia? So, you visited Canterlot? Perhaps, she sent you here to learn about friendship, so you can quit being a grouch all the time.”
Ordinarily, I’d have a comeback, but after such a long time, Rarity’s laughter was welcomed with open arms. “Actually, I didn’t visit . I was forced. There’s more important matters than friendly reunions, although you wouldn’t think it if you saw my reception at the palace.”
“Oh, my dear Wubsy,” began Rarity, “there is always time for friendly reunions. Come, I’ll take you to Twilight, but you must do something for me first.”
“What might that be, Rarity?”
“Come with me to the boutique, so we can catch up.”
“Rarity, it’s very important that I—”
“Please,” said Rarity, as she stared into my heart with puppy dog eyes and pouting lips. She may as well be a master of persuasion with that face in her arsenal.
“Fine, Rarity. Let’s go to the boutique. I’ll stay no later than an hour. Then , you have to take me to Twilight’s house. Understand?”
“Absolutely! Let’s be off then, shall we?”
Rarity and I locked hooves, and she pulled me along. An hour shouldn’t hurt, right? Twilight might be a little upset, but she’s become less strict since we were little. I hear she spends just as much time locked up in her room reading though. Rarity told me all about the latest fashion as we walked through Ponyville, but I couldn’t be bothered to listen. Fashion wasn’t really my thing. Anypony in Manehattan could tell you that.
When we arrived at the Carousel Boutique, I was impressed. The building couldn’t compare in size to what I’ve seen, but it had a certain charm to it. The architecture reminded me of my youth. Inside, a filly was tangled in a mess of fabrics. She put on an innocent smile when she saw Rarity.
“Um I can explain,” said the little filly.
“Sweetie Belle, how many times have I told you not to play with my materials?” asked Rarity. She seemed upset. I’m guessing this isn’t the first time it’s happened.
“But, Rarity, I wanted to try making a dress like you.”
“Sweetie, we’ve been over this. Making dresses isn’t your talent.
“Third time’s the charm?” Her smile went away, and she looked at me. “Who’s that guy? I’ve never seen him around Ponyville.”
“Sweetie Belle, don’t be rude! This is Mad Wubs. He’s from Manehattan,” said Rarity. She turned to me and said, “Wubsy, this is my sister, Sweetie Belle.”
“Mad Wubs? That’s a weird name,” said Sweetie Belle, clearly disregarding what Rarity had said. This filly may not have manners, but neither did I.
“Well, I’m what’s called a disc jockey,” I said to the filly.
“I know what a DJ is! I wanna be a singer, so I’ve been studying music.”
“Sweetie, if you want to be a singer, why do you keep getting into my fabrics?” asked Rarity.
“Sis, shhh. So, you’re a DJ. That means you play music, right?” Sweetie Belle asked me. There was a certain sparkle in her eyes.
“I would use the term “play” loosely,” I replied. I felt kinda bad crushing her expectations like that, but I couldn’t lie to her. Well, I could, but I’d feel worse.
“Boo. Well, at least you got your cutie mark. I’m still trying to get mine.”
Sweetie Belle fell flat on the floor and dragged herself out of the room. It was...not the reaction I expected. I wasn’t really sure what to think of any of that. Clearly, I hadn’t made the ideal first impression.
Rarity sighed. “Don’t mind her. She always gets mopey when she thinks about not having her cutie mark. She and a couple friends have been trying for some time to find their special talents.”
“Has she tried singing yet?” I asked.
“No, she hasn’t. I don’t think I’ll ever understand her thought process. Anyway, let’s go up to my workshop, so Sweetie Belle won’t interrupt.”
Rarity’s idea of “catching up” involved more frivolous gossip than actually talking about what’s happened since we last saw each other. A few times, she tried asking about the hottest fashions in Manehattan, a subject that I changed every time. The other day ruined any desire I had to talk about my time in Manehattan, so I decided it was time to switch the focus of this conversation.
“Rarity, you have quite a few dresses around here. Did you make them all?” I asked. Not sure why I asked that. It’s not as if somepony sneaks in at night and makes dresses.
“Well, isn’t it obvious? Only the finest dresses are made here at the Carousel Boutique,” replied Rarity. “Ooh, would you like me to make something for you?”
“Dresses aren’t really my thing. You know, since I’m a guy.”
“No, no, no. You misunderstand. Do you want me to make you something like a suit, or maybe an outfit for when you perform at the club?”
“I don’t think I’ll need anything fancy anytime soon, and I doubt I’ll be going back to the club ever again. So, I’ll have to pass this time, Rarity.”
“Why won’t you be returning? You didn’t quit your job, did you? While I find that place deplorable, a pony your age needs a job.”
“I didn’t quit. I was...relieved of my position by outside forces. In all truthfulness, I could go back there once my work is done, but I don’t want to. I have no plans of returning to Manehattan.”
“Your work? Does this have anything to do with Celestia?”
Perhaps, I said too much. “Uh yea, but don’t worry about it. Anyway, don’t you think it’s about time we go see Twilight.”
Her eyes narrowed on me. “Yes, it is.” She could tell something was up, but Celestia didn’t say who could know. Sure, Rarity is one of the bearers of the Elements of Harmony, but I’m not telling anypony without Twilight’s approval.
We went back downstairs to find Sweetie Belle speaking with a yellow mare. Her pink mane covered her face from this angle. I don’t think she’s anypony I know. Rarity left my side to speak with her. They both mentioned something about a spa. I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.
“Rarity, if you have plans with—” I stopped. Probably should’ve asked her name first.
“This is Fluttershy,” Rarity said, pointing to the yellow mare. “She and I were supposed to have a spa date today, but she came here to say that she must cancel. Apparently, Twilight asked her to bring me to the library.”
“I’m sorry,” began Fluttershy, in a soft voice, “but Twilight said we all needed to meet at her house. She didn’t say why though.”
“As it would happen, we were heading there ourselves, Fluttershy. Come, Wubs, let us all go together.”
I couldn’t fathom how unbelievably fitting it was for Twilight to live in a library. No doubt, Celestia had something to do with the arrangements. One thing I didn’t expect was for the library to be a tree. Most buildings in Ponyville were...well, buildings. I opened the door and saw four ponies in the room, one of which was giving me an angry glare.
“You’re late!” shouted Twilight.
“I’m sorry,” said Fluttershy, her head lowered.
“Not you, Fluttershy. I was talking about S—” she stopped when she caught the look I was giving her. “I was talking about Wubs. He was supposed to be here an hour ago!”
Rarity raised a hoof slightly. “I may have had something to do with that.”
“It’s nice to see you too, Twilight,” I said.
She sighed. “It’s nice to see you, Wubs,” said Twilight. She pointed at the floor where the other ponies were sitting. “Now, will you please come in? We have important business to discuss.”
Chapter Five: Game Plan
The library seemed smaller on the outside. The illusion of size I was experiencing may be caused, in part, by the thousands of books Twilight lined the walls with. I could spend a year in here and not even make a dent in her massive collection. Some ponies never change, I suppose. While taking in my surroundings, I caught a glimpse of Twilight’s tapping hoof. Four others looked at me with furrowed brows. One pink mare with a fluffy mane imitated the way I moved my head during my oblivious survey of the house. I understood the others’ reactions.
Twilight’s grown since we last met. We talked through letters over the years, but never met in person since we were little. She’s no longer the little bookworm we all knew and loved. Now, she’s a much bigger bookworm. A bookworm with wings. Those are gonna take some getting used to.
“We’re starting now, everypony,” said Twilight. All of us, except a blue pegasus whose crossed legs and indifferent gaze told me she had better things to do, paid close attention to what Twilight was going to say next.
“Firstly, I would like to ask you a question,” she began again, looking at me. “You didn’t tell Rarity about any of this, did you?”
“She seemed to know something was amiss,” I began, “but I kept it a secret.”
“Twi, what’s all this about?” asked an orange earth pony.
I’ve heard all of their voices now, but three names still escape me. “Uh I don’t meant to interrupt,” I began, “but I think introductions are needed.”
Twilight threw her head back and groaned. “How could I have forgotten? You already know Rarity and Fluttershy.”
“Ahm Applejack,” said the orange mare.
“I’m Pinkie Pie!” exclaimed the pink pony in a very high-pitch.
Finally, the one who didn’t want to be here said, “And I’m Rainbow Dash, the most awesome pegasus in all of Ponyville!”
“And I’m—” I began before Twilight interrupted me.
“And he’s Mad Wubs, the subject matter of this little meeting, which I’d like to get started,” said Twilight. Her voice constantly shifted pitch as she frantically moved about the room.
“Twilight dear, there’s no need to get so stressed,” said Rarity in a soothing voice.
Twilight stopped dead in her tracks and turned to Rarity. She quickly approached the group as she shouted, “How can I not get stressed when the fate of Equestria is at stake, and I can’t do anything about it?!”
Her hoof shot into her mouth, as mine connected with my face. Everypony else...well, their jaws just dropped. Twilight’s sudden outburst of doom and gloom shocked them to their cores. Twilight and I watched, unsure of what to say, as they all sat speechless. Finally, she looked at me with blushing cheeks, and put on the best smile she could force.
She sighed and said to me, “I blew it, didn’t I?”
“Just a bit. When they start speaking again, we’ll know the damage,” I replied.
“What in Celestia’s name is going on?!” shouted Rarity with hooves on head.
“On a scale of one to ten,” Twilight said to me. Her eyes began shifting between the mares that were still mute, looking for signs of life.
I looked up to the ceiling as I assessed the situation. “Six outta ten.”
Twilight put on a genuine smile. “Oh! I’ve done worse.”
“While I’m happy you’re calming down, doing worse than accidentally spilling the news of a possible cataclysm isn’t something you should take pride in.”
“I don’t take “pride” in it. I find relief in knowing it could’ve been worse.”
“Is that really better?”
“Hey! Who here is the cataclysmic veteran? This pony.”
“That was just those four times.”
“Four more than you .” She stuck her tongue out at me.
“Could you two lovebirds quit fightin’ and tell us what the hay is goin’ on?” asked Applejack. She rubbed her head after coming out of shock.
“Love-what?!” asked Twilight.
“Come again?” I asked.
“Ahm just kidding. So, until those three wake up, what do we do?” asked Applejack.
“She has a point,” said Rarity, as she waved her hoof in front of Rainbow Dash. No reaction. “We can’t have such an important discussion while they’re out of it like this.”
A menacing smile appeared on Twilight that struck my heart with fear. She only smiled like that when she was gonna get payback. I couldn’t recall anything I’d done to her that she hadn’t already gotten revenge for. Wait...oh no. The snowball war from when we were six, and she got pneumonia because I buried her in the fort. She never got me back for that!
“Alright girls,” she began, “let me tell you about the Canterlot Crew.”
Oh, sweet Celestia. Why that? When I moved to Manehattan, I thought the fear of embarrassing childhood stories could be put to rest. Then again, that was a time when I didn’t think I’d ever be in a room with Twilight again. She may be a kind pony most of the time, but she has an evil side too.
Gotta act fast. “Twilight, that isn’t necessary!” I shouted, my voice cracking at the end.
“Oh, but don’t you think they should know more about you? After all, you are the reason we’re gathered here,” Twilight said with a smile.
“No need to bore them with that. Nope. Let’s hear about them. Yea, that’d be more interesting.”
“I’d love to hear more about Wubsy,” said Rarity.
“I reckon I’d like to hear more about...uh Wubsy...too,” added Applejack.
Twilight sat down and clapped her hooves together. “It’s decided!”
“May I leave?” I asked.
“No. Now, I suppose we should start with when we met,” Twilight began. Rarity and Applejack listened attentively. “Back when I studied magic under Celestia, I became friends with a colt who was also a student. That colt was Mad Wubs. He was much nicer back then, but also much ruder. The Canterlot Crew was a group he made up. This group consisted of me, Wubs, two other ponies who lived in Canterlot, and Wubs’s sister.”
“You have a sister? You never told me about her!” shouted Rarity.
“He doesn’t like to talk about family much. Anyway, his sister, Midnight Aria, attended school with us as well. The Canterlot Crew was our little group of ponies we always played with. The five of us did everything together, until Wubs got his cutie mark during a music lesson Celestia had us participate in. After that, he stopped his studies and skipped town.”
“I didn’t skip town. I started over. There wasn’t any other way than to go without notification,” I interjected.
“You didn’t even tell Aria, your only family.”
“She didn’t need to know. Neither did you. Nor Celestia.”
“How ‘bout yer parents?” asked Applejack.
“I don’t believe in ghosts,” I replied.
That last comment tipped over the awkward scale. Even Twilight, who already knew my parents were dead, stopped talking. Compared to this, the childhood stories were greatly favorable. Maybe I was a little too blunt.
“So,” I began, “how about that story you were telling, Twilight?”
Twilight noticed the helplessness in my face and took sympathy on me. “Oh yeah! So, like I was saying, we did everything together. Played make-believe, explored the areas around Canterlot, and pretty much were inseparable. At first, I thought it was silly, and preferred reading my books.”
“I seem to recall a certain little filly crying when she missed a Crew meeting.”
“Th-that’s not true!” Twilight shouted. Her red cheeks shone like a warning light. “Ahem. Anyway, I warmed up to it, and joined after persuasion from our fearless leader. Wubs loved challenging the girls to a fort war, but he never won.” She snickered as she looked at me.
“You had an extra team member!”
“You had a pegasus! Do you still not understand the tactical advantage in that?” she rebutted. “Now, let me finish the story! After Wubs left, we slowly drifted apart. Midnight Aria finished second-in-class, behind me, and left as well. The other two in the Crew moved to Fillydelphia to pursue their own dreams. And you already know where I ended up.”
“You couldn’t win with the air superiority of a pegasus?!” exclaimed Rainbow Dash.
“Where did Midnight Aria go, Twilight?” asked Fluttershy, rejoining us as well.
“I don’t know,” Twilight answered. “She followed in her brother’s footsteps. Discourtesy must run in the family.”
“That was a great story, Twilight!” shouted Pinkie Pie.
“But you didn’t hear any of it,” stated Dash.
Pinkie giggled. “Oh, I’ve been awake the whole time!”
“Why didn’t you say something sooner?” asked Twilight.
“I was so busy listening, I forgot to speak!”
Everypony rolled their eyes. With everypony back in the realm of the living, Twilight was ready to start the meeting. I took Rainbow Dash’s newfound attention as a sign that she now realized how important this was. Twilight explained the Cathedral of Chaos and the threat it poses to the others as Celestia had told me.
“And that’s why we need to give the Elements of Harmony to Wubs,” Twilight finished.
“What?!” Dash shouted, throwing her hooves in the air. “Why do we need to give the Elements to him? Can’t we just handle this?”
“Celestia specifically said to leave it to Wubs and the team he chooses.”
“Look, I know Celestia is the princess and her word is law, but I reckon we could stop this Cathedral thing. We never failed to save Equestria before.” added Applejack. “I know you and Wubs go way back, but we barely know the guy.”
“I understand your concerns, but we can’t go against Celestia’s orders. Like you said, Applejack, she’s the princess. This is just how it is.”
Rainbow Dash brought her hoof down to the floor. “We should vote!”
“What part of “can’t go against” didn’t you understand?”
“All in favor of keeping the Elements and doing this ourselves, put your hoof down!”
Applejack fidgeted. “Ahm sorry, Twilight. I won’t entrust somethin’ as important as the Elements to somepony I don’t know.” She put her hoof down.
“Applejack...you can’t be serious,” said Twilight. It felt as if there was a feeling of...betrayal in her voice. Twilight had always been like a sister to me. Maybe that familial feeling was reciprocated. I felt it from Cadence and Shining, but was never sure about Twilight. She threw her hoof into the air. “Well, anypony who is in favor of giving the Elements to him, raise your hoof!”
“I, for one, believe in him. I may not know him as well as Twilight, but we’ve been friends for a while,” said Rarity. Her hoof went up.
“I always give a pony the benefit of the doubt! First, you gotta pinkie promise that you’ll get it done! Ok?” asked Pinkie.
“I promise that I’ll get it done,” I replied.
“Pinkie promise.”
“Pinkie promise.”
“Good enough for me!” she shouted, raising her hoof.
Rainbow Dash flew over to Fluttershy. “You're the last one. Either Twilight wins or we tie and nothing happens. Your choice.”
Fluttershy fell to the floor in fright of Dash’s sudden approach. She covered her face with her hooves. “Um can I not vote? I don’t think I can handle the pressure.”
“No! You have to vote!”
“Oh. Then, I’m sorry,” she began, “but I trust Twilight’s decision.” Fluttershy raised her hoof, completing the vote, and surrendering the Elements of Harmony to me.
“That settles it. We will do as Celestia instructed and give him the Elements of Harmony,” said Twilight. “I’m not sure why we bothered voting though. It’s not like we own the Elements.”
“We are a democracy!” shouted Pinkie Pie.
“Actually, we’re a monarchy,” I corrected.
“Oh yeah. My bad!”
“Uh no problem. So, I get the Elements now. What next, Twilight?” I asked.
“I have no idea. I figured the plan would be left up to you ,” she answered. “Was I supposed to think of a plan?”
“No. Maybe? I don’t know! Celestia said you would know what to do once I had the Elements. Was she wrong?”
“Well, I assume you would find five other ponies to wield the Elements.”
“Gee thanks. I was hoping for something a little more specific. Maybe...a name or somewhere to look. You know, something useful.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Are you unsatisfied with my advice?”
“We’ll just be going now,” said Rainbow Dash.
She, along with the other four, was standing near the front door. Applejack had already opened the door halfway. She and Rarity gave Dash an angry look. I assume they were trying to sneak out of the awkward atmosphere that slowly flooded Twilight’s house since I arrived. There was no reason to stop them. They had served their purpose.
“Wait...are you all trying to sneak out?” asked Twilight. I had hoped someone as smart as her would get the hint and let them go.
Applejack looked to the others and said, “Um we just thought...um, Rarity?”
“Uh yes, we figured we were done here, and that you two might like some time to catch up. That’s all,” said Rarity. “Right, Applejack?”
“Yep. I reckon that’s all.”
They must have caught the unconvinced look on my face, because panic grew on theirs. I sighed and said, “Look, you don’t have to lie. You can leave.”
“Hey! You aren’t my boss!” shouted Rainbow Dash.
“Oh? Would you prefer to stay?” I asked.
“Uh...no. I’ll just go now.”
They all swiftly exited the library and I was alone with Twilight. We both stared at the floor. It wasn’t the first time I was alone with a mare today, but it was definitely far more awkward. There was so much we could talk about, but neither of us knew what to say. That awkward atmosphere felt as if it was growing into an aura emanating from the both of us.
“So...Loose Cannon and Cadence said hello,” I said, looking up.
“Oh? That’s nice,” she replied, still looking down.
“What’s it like being a princess?”
She met my eyes. “It’s work. The wings are still taking some time to get used to, but flying is fun.” She paused for a moment. “I’m sorry about that story earlier. I know you don’t like talking about the old days.”
“No, it’s fine. I’ve ran from my past for too long, Twilight. I want to make it part of me again. If I can’t embrace it by this journey’s end, I don’t think I ever will.”
“I see. So you’re serious about this, right? This isn’t just you at stake. It’s all of Equestria. You must be prepared.”
“I’ve never been more serious, Twilight. I can assure you that.”
She smiled and stood up. Her eyes shifted to a pile of letters on her desk. “I found these in a box under my bed before you arrived. For hours, I looked for them.” She shifted through the pile with her hooves. Her horn glowed magenta as she lifted one of the letters. “I think I have an idea of where you can start your search. Do you recall a certain musical pony you fancied?”
My cheeks turned bright red. “I have no idea who you’re talking about.”
“Don’t play dumb. You know who I’m talking about.”
I turned around and said, “I don’t think I do.”
Her smile turned to a grimace, which I got a face full of when she teleported in front of me. “You know I’m talking about Vinyl Scratch!” she shouted.
“Yes, well, Vinyl and I haven’t spoken in a while so—”
“Don’t tell me you’re still avoiding her,” she said with a sigh.
“I’m not avoiding her,” I began, “but I’m not talking to her either.”
“It’s been five years. Five! Don’t you think it’s about time to drop that ultimatum and fix the relationship you messed up?”
“No. No I do not.”
“I do! You need ponies to help you? Why not start with Vinyl? You’ll never end up together if you just sit around doing nothing.”
“I did something and we didn’t end up together. So what do you propose?”
“There’s an idea.”
“What’s an idea?”
“Huh? Oh, nothing. Go talk to her. If anypony will help you, it’s her.”
Before I could continue to argue, Twilight was behind me. She put her front hooves on my back and pushed me. Despite the resistance from my legs, she managed to force me to the door. Then, she turned around, lifted her hind legs, and bucked me out of the house.
“Go get her, casanova!” she shouted to me before slamming the door on my flank.
It occurred to me that I was kicked out before receiving the Elements of Harmony. I knocked on Twilight’s door, but got no response. If I didn’t know better, I would think it was an accident that the Elements were not in my possession. Twilight must be holding onto them to force me into talking to Vinyl. Since I have no choice, I guess it’s time to put on that old Manehattan charm.
Chapter Six: Marked
A crisp breeze caressed my face as I sat with my back against the tree that is Twilight's house. Whether she doesn’t know I’m here, or simply doesn't care, I don't know. Regardless of which was true, I continued to loiter there for a good while. The golden rays beaming down on me slipped away as the encroaching shadows offered their relief.
Ponyville is a quaint town. I could understand how Twilight would come to enjoy such a place. What I can’t picture is Vinyl Scratch, DJ pony and party enthusiast, choosing to live here over Manehattan. Maybe her desire to stay with Octavia played a part, or perhaps she just wasn’t as wild as I thought.
If I had to describe how I feel about Vinyl, I would say that I love her. Twilight and Octavia knew it, but I was always too shy to tell her the extent of my feelings. Now that the chance to see her again has arisen, I’ve got parasprites in my stomach, and there’s not a one-pony band in sight. So many questions swirled around in my head. Will she recognize me? Will she remember me? Will she even want to see me?
Maybe I’m worrying for nothing. Somepony once told me, “You can’t wait around for things to come to you. The only thing stopping you is you . If you want something bad enough, act like a stallion and take it. Otherwise, let it slip away and move on.” I let it slip away once, but I didn’t move on, because I wanted it bad enough. The approach was wrong before. If I mess up now, there won’t be a second chance. Time to be a stallion, for once.
I stood up and left the treehouse. As I walked through town, it became apparent to me that I was accumulating a rather insurmountable pile of questions, none of which had foreseeable answers. When I was still her student, Celestia always told me that the unknown can be terrifying, but it’s the not knowing that makes it so exciting. It took me til now to realize how great the truth was in those words.
She didn’t deserve the cold shoulder I gave her. Celestia always treated me and Aria like her own children. I loved learning from her, whether it be magic or the lessons through parental duties she took on in my parents’ stead. It was hard living without parents around. They were always travelling. I...don’t remember what they looked like. When I heard about their deaths, the world seemed much more dreary. Then I left. Celestia could’ve sent for me. If I had to guess, she probably hoped the concept of friendship would return to me like it did with Twilight.
The citizens of Ponyville are extremely friendly. It’s a welcomed change of pace. I can’t recall the last time somepony greeted me for the sake of simply making others feel welcomed. Here in Ponyville, it’s stranger if it doesn’t happen every few minutes. The ambient kindness gives me a warm feeling I haven’t felt since my days in Canterlot.
There was one pony who was off though. A gray cloak covered his body. Naught but his muzzle was visible under the hood. The mystery shrouding him was intriguing yet terrifying, just as teacher said. I felt compelled to speak to him, but as we neared, he brushed past me. The touch of a hoof grazed me as he passed. My chest was warm, not like the feeling from earlier. This sensation was...burning.
The agonizing fire in my chest brought me to my knees. Unless my eyes deceived me, a faint glow escaped the mysterious stallion’s hood as he passed me. I heard a voice ask, “Are you sure about this?” The words echoed in my mind, but I didn’t hear anypony say them. Am I hearing voices?
As the pain faded, I stood up and looked back in the direction the stallion went. He was gone, lost in the crowds of ponies going about their daily lives. That encounter was more on the side of frightening than interesting. Teacher never said the balance would shift this much. Wait...where was I going again?
Oh right, I was going to visit Vinyl. However, as the burn returned, I felt the need to think things over some more. With that notion in mind, I left for the outskirts of town. I heard from passersby that there was a quiet lake nearby, the perfect place to clear my head. With all these distractions, and no clear time range to finish this little adventure by, I needed to make haste with the plan. I just...need to do this first.
The trip to the lake was a mostly quiet one. Aside from a few hellos and waves from ponies along the road, there was a peaceful silence that was music to my ears. The ponies of Ponyville are a lively bunch. I’m no stranger to lively towns, but there was something special here. This wasn’t the busy hustle and bustle of Manehattan or the lax high-society of Canterlot. Ponyville gave off a feeling of excitement to me. A new town for a fresh start.
Melodious tunes emanated from the trees around the lake as colorful birds shared their songs. The water was still. Across the way, a family of frogs hopped in, spreading light ripples across the lake. This beautiful display of nature was foreign to me. I sat down on the shore. The ripples reached me, causing some water to dampen my hooves. Its refreshing sensation lasted for a moment before the liquid returned back to its home in the lake.
It was my fixation with the water that led me to notice something in my reflection. A veinous, black spot marked my chest, where my heart is. As my heartbeat rose, so did its pulsation. Was the burning from earlier caused by this? It wasn’t causing me pain at the moment, but it was definitely an item of concern.
Before I had the chance to make a decision as to how I should react to this, the reflection of an old friend began staring back at me. Most ponies would probably drop what they’re doing if they saw something like this mark, but she loved that cello far too much to drop it for my sake. She carefully leaned it against a nearby tree, then returned to my side and sat down next to me. I avoided eye contact for as long as possible, but she leaned in and asked, “What trouble have you gotten yourself into?”
Octavia was always very to the point. “I honestly don’t know,” I replied. “It happened very recently, and I just now noticed it.”
Octavia and I hadn’t seen each other in five years, when she and Vinyl left Manehattan. She was the first pony I met there, as well as the first friend I made. Through her, I was introduced to Vinyl, and the three of us became the best of friends. The two of them had their own plans though and decided to move to Ponyville. In retrospect, I probably should’ve gone with them, but I was stubborn at the time.
“Does it hurt?” she asked with a worried look on her face.
“Not right now. It did before, but everything is fine at the moment,” I said with a half-reassuring smile.
She frowned. “It doesn’t look fine,” she retorted. “It looks awful. You look awful. Something troubling you?”
“You could say I’m stressed, but that’d be an understatement. A lot has happened. This little mark is just the tip of the iceberg.”
“Your ship hasn’t sunk yet, has it?”
“No, it’s just setting sail. I’m afraid this little setback has altered my course though. I suppose it could be worse.”
Her frowned turned to a smile, albeit a light one, but it was reassuring nonetheless. “A bit of good news is better than none at all. So, what have you been up to?”
“Until a few days ago, I was living what I called a life, but it’s come to my understanding that it wasn’t a very good one. Now, I’m here in Ponyville to—”
“Are you going to move to Ponyville?” she asked excitedly. It was beyond me why that notion would excite Octavia, especially since I practically drove a wedge between us before she left Manehattan. “Well, are you? Vinyl would be happy to hear it. She’s been missing you, but we haven’t had the time to visit.”
So Vinyl did miss me. I’m glad to hear it. “Um sorry, but no, I’m not moving to Ponyville. I’m also not going back to Manehattan. It’s a long story.”
“I’ve got time, so go ahead and tell me.”
“Actually, I was going to visit Vinyl. There’s something we need to talk about. It kinda intertwines with the story. Maybe she can tell you about it later.”
Her eyes lit up. “Better yet, I can go tell her you’re coming, and then you can tell both of us at the same time. How does that sound?”
“Uh sounds great. I’ll see you soon.” I looked back down at my reflection, eyes locked on the mark. It worried me, but for some reason, I wasn’t all that concerned about it.
Octavia took note of this and told me, “You better get that checked out. Go to the hospital and see what they think before going to Vinyl’s house.”
I kept staring at the mark. It entranced me. “Hospital won’t be necessary. I know who to see about this.” My reflected smile assured her everything was fine. After returning the gesture, she picked up her cello, and hurried off to tell Vinyl about my visit. Any reservations I had about this would have to be thrown aside now that I’ve been locked into the arrangement. I placed a hoof on the mark and stood for a moment while it pulsated, then headed off to Twilight’s house.
“Go away!”
After what happened since I was last here, it slipped my mind that Twilight had kicked me out. When she heard that I hadn’t spoken with Vinyl yet, her reaction was anything but pleasant. I was never particularly good at dealing with Twilight. On most occasions, she would outwit me. Now, all she has to do is put a door in my way and I’m bested.
“I told you to talk to Vinyl, but you come back here almost an hour later and tell me you didn’t do it? I hoped that, given the situation, you would listen to me for once!”
“I’m sorry, but there were some unforeseen circumstances, and I...well, I have something you should see.”
There was no response. Instead, the door opened slightly, and Twilight poked her head out. Her wide eyes and my unconvincing grin communicated all we needed to say. She flung the door opened and pointed inside. I entered and sat on the floor, while Twilight ran alongside the bookshelves, her horn glowing as she pulled out books and threw them in front of me. Each one stacked perfectly atop the book before it.
Twilight’s frantic actions only served to worry me further. I had never seen her act like this, but then again, her magic wasn’t as quick and precise as it is now. She didn’t have the ability to perform such a feat back then and there was never reason to. I never would’ve expected little Twilight to live the more exciting life, but look at her now. She saved Equestria and Ponyville on several occasions. I can’t compare to that.
“Twilight, what do you think of—”
Suddenly, I was surrounded in the magenta aura of her magic. She lifted me up and started rotating me in every possible direction. Meanwhile, she took notes as she inspected my body. Her quill dropped and I with it. Twilight trotted out of the room.
“Ugh I think I’m gonna hurl. Twilight, what was that—” My eyes fell upon a set of beakers and tools she was bringing into the room. “Twilight, what are those for?”
“Don’t worry. I’m just going to run some experiments.” Twilight began pouring oddly colored liquids into the beakers and test tubes. She lifted a stirring stick and began mixing the chemicals together. A test tube containing something red presented itself before me. “This might hurt a bit.”
“H-how much is a bit?”
She looked at the test tube and smiled. “Oh, just a bit.” She began her slow approach towards me. “Now, stay still.” She poured the potion on the mark. My heartbeat increased rapidly and I blacked out.
When I regained consciousness, Spike and Twilight were standing over me. They were talking about something, but I couldn’t hear anything. Oh Celestia! Did Twilight deafen me? I sat up with haste and threw my hooves on my ears. I must have been screaming because Spike covered my mouth and Twilight pushed me back down. My dilated pupils searched the room for something, just one thing to make a sound and confirm that I’m not deaf.
Twilight said something to Spike, who then walked over to the desk and brought over a notepad. He wrote something down and showed it to me. You aren’t deaf. One of the potions made you unable to hear. It’ll wear off soon. Well, that’s reassuring. Wait...no it’s not! She took away my hearing! Not to mention the blackout.
From what I could see, the mark was still there. My heartbeat had slowed but it was still rather fast. I closed my eyes and tried to calm down. There wasn’t much else I could do until my hearing returns or Spike writes something else. In the absolute silence, I must have fallen asleep. Twilight awoke me from my slumber with a shout, “Wake up!”
Sluggishly pulling myself up, I looked at her. My unamused expression received a smile from her. “You didn’t need to shout in my ear,” I said.
“You didn’t need to fall asleep during my tests,” she replied.
“You knocked me out!”
“It was for science!”
“I’m not a science experiment!”
“Will you two stop yelling?” Spike pushed us apart and gave each of us an angry glare. “You’re friends. Act like it. Twilight, you should understand why somepony would be upset about being tested on without asking. Wubs, you should know that Twilight just wants to help you. So, stop fighting!”
Twilight and I looked at each other; both of us frowned. “Spike’s right,” she said. “I should’ve warned you about the side effects first. I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too. I know you’ve always had my best interest at heart, but I have a quick temper sometimes,” I said.
“You don’t have to tell me. I know your temper well,” Twilight said with a smile. Before I could respond, she brought me in for a hug. I sat there awkwardly for a moment with my hooves at my sides. Remembering all the things Twilight’s done for me, I reciprocated and embraced her. Upon release, I saw the smile of the excited filly I met in magic school. My first friend.
The air of emotion was broken by Spike’s coughing. He held up Twilight’s notes and said, “Did you forget what we were doing?” He tapped the results of the tests.
“Right,” Twilight said as she grabbed the notepad. “So, I ran some more tests while you were unconscious. From what I can tell, the origin of the mark is not scientific, which means it is of magical origin. The problem is I don’t know how to fix it.”
“Do you have even a clue of what it is?” I asked.
“I’ve looked through dozens of books, but I can’t find any mention of a mark like this. Do you know when it first appeared?”
“I noticed it when I was at the lake, but it might have shown up when I met that stranger in town. That was when the burning started.”
“Stranger? Burning? Why didn’t you mention those before?”
“Because I needed you to help me figure out if they were connected. When I was on my way to Vinyl’s house, a cloaked stallion placed his hoof on my chest as he passed by me. After that, an intense burning sensation filled my heart.”
“Despite that, you didn’t come here immediately? What were you thinking?”
“I don’t know. I heard a voice then everything seemed to fade away. The only thought in my mind was to get away from town and think.”
“You need to go back to Canterlot and have Princess Celestia fix this.” Twilight ushered me out of the library. “Be careful.” She shut the door behind me.
Twilight seemed very concerned about what I told her. It’s not like I’m not concerned as well, but is Celestia really necessary? I’ve been relatively fine since that encounter in town. The pain wasn’t unbearable. I’m feeling it now, but I’m still standing. Going back to Canterlot would take too much time. Time that I don’t have. I’ll manage on my own.
