It was a beautiful night in the heart of Canterlot. The warm, summer breeze blew through the empty city as the full moon shined down on it. The inhabitants of the town slept peacefully. That is, all but one.
A young filly lay awake in her bed, unable to go to sleep. Her open eyes lazily took in the small, peaceful bedroom, bathed in the cool, white glow of the moon. A single book rested perfectly centered on top of a small desk, located directly beside a moderately sized bookshelf.
The pony, finally alone with her thoughts, away from the welcome distractions of the day, began to truly contemplate words that she had heard and thoughts that had entered her head. As she thought up possible outcomes and consequences thereof, a choking sob broke out into the calm silence. Tears started to run down her cheeks as she sobbed into her pillow.
Why? Why me? Why did it have to be me? I-I didn’t ask for this! She cried inside her mind. I don’t want to be this way!
The filly barely noticed her crying getting louder, not caring enough to try and quiet down. She somewhat welcomed the release of emotions she had been bottling up for the past few days.
“Twily?” A soft, feminine voice sounded from her open doorway. Twilight looked up, making out her mother’s form in the ambient light. The parent started to walk towards her. “Twilight, are you crying? What’s the matter?”
Twilight started to wipe the tears away with her hoof. “M-mommy,” she said in a shaky voice, “I... I...”
“Shh,” soothed the white unicorn. Approaching the bed, the mare lay down next to the purple filly. Smiling softly, she hugged the lavender filly close to her chest. “Twilight. It’s okay. It’s okay.”
Comforted suddenly by the pony she loved the most, Twilight burst into tears once more, crying noisily into her mother’s coat. The older smiled lovingly and hugged her daughter even tighter. “I’m here for you, Twilight,” she whispered into her ear.
The Mother and Daughter held together for some period of time, the former continuing to hug and nuzzle the pony in her arms while the latter slowly calmed down. As time went on, Twilight’s sobs gradually slowed, before finally stopping outright.
“I-I’m sorry, mommy,” Twilight whispered tentatively after a while. The white-and-purple maned pony smiled reassuringly and squeezed her daughter.
“I’m here for you, Twilight,” she said, looking her in the eyes, “I always am. Now do you want to tell me what the matter is?”
Twilight’s expression turned from one of comfort to one of slight fear. “I... I... I can’t!” she exclaimed. She looked away as her eyes started to tear up once more. “Y-you’ll hate me!”
“Twilight.” Her mother looked down at her seriously. Raising an eyebrow, she smiled down at her filly. “Do you really think I could ever hate you?”
The small filly sniffed. “Promise?”
The older mare kissed her on top of her head. “I promise, Twilight. No matter what you say, I will not hate you.”
“I- I- I-,” Twilight trembled, ready for her mother to push her away, disown her, the moment she said it out loud.
“I-I’m a fillyfooler!” She cried, tears springing back into her eyes. This was it. This was when her mother would let go of her, back away from her, an expression of disgust spreading across her face. Turning her head away, she braced herself for the brutal rejection.
It didn’t come. Twilight was surprised when the larger unicorn hugged her even closer, a combination of sympathy and compassion spreading across her face. “Oh, Twily,” she murmured. The pony sighed. “It must have been so hard for you. I can’t imagine what you’ve been going through.”
Twilight looked into her mother’s eyes, her eyes still wet. “Y-you don’t hate me? Even though I’m a-” She forced herself to choke out the last words. “A fillyfooler?”
“Twilight.” Her mother looked down at her seriously, a small frown appearing on her muzzle, “I don’t want you to call yourself such a derogatory term. Okay? There is nothing wrong about liking mares instead of stallions,” she emphasized, “I don’t ever want you to put yourself down for it.”
“B-but the fillies in my school said i-it wasn’t natural,” Twilight stuttered, still recovering from her release of emotion, “Amber said i-it would b-bring shame down on a f-fam-”
“Amber was wrong.” Twilight’s mother said shortly. She smiled down at Twilight.
“Listen, Twilight. You’re not bringing shame down on the family, and what you’re feeling is not unnatural. Okay? Do you understand?”
Twilight looked up at her mother for a moment, then nodded. “Okay,” she whispered. She squeezed a final few tears before resting her head in her mother’s soft fur.
As her daughter’s breathing started to slow, Galaxy slowly began to rock Twilight to sleep. She hummed the melody of a lullaby and she helped her filly enter slumberland. She sighed softly.
“You could have told me,” she whispered to the sleeping filly.Smiling, she leaned down, kissing her Twilight once more on the top of her head. “Sleep tight, Twily,” she whispered, tucking her into bed.
The next morning, the purple filly slowly opened her eyes, taking in the dimly lit ceiling. As she recalled the previous night, thoughts and worries began to enter her head. What if it had been a dream? What if her mother didn’t approve of her feelings? Leaving her bedroom, she apprehensively walked downstairs into the kitchen where her mother was making breakfast.
“Twily!” She called when she saw her. Leaving the pancakes to cook on the stove, she made her way over to her.
“Morning, mom,” Twilight said, smiling up at the white pony. Galaxy knelt down and nuzzled her daughter.
“How’re you feeling, Twi?” She whispered. Twilight sighed in relief before smiling.
“I’m feeling a lot better, mom. I-I think that I’ll be good for today.” She said. “Mom?”
“Yes, honey?”
“Thank you.”
Her mother laughed. “You’re welcome, Twilight. I love you.”
