Octavia groaned in her usual annoyance that was brought on by her roommate's antics as the grey-brown coated mare rubbed at her temples firmly trying to prevent the headache that would not fail to come. Though she couldn't help but look on at the white coated mare, her roommate Vinyl, with concern as the mentioned mare for once looked stressed glancing at the clock as it read 23:52. Octavia stretched out over the couch one last time knocking off sheet music she completely forgot she was working with before Vinyl's stressed musical assault began. The hornless musician thought back a bit as she sat up upon her haunches not realizing how much she was staring at the unicorn pony concern stamped over her features. Octavia whipped her ash black mane back by tossing her head about as she went over her latest composition humming the notes to herself while sprawled out over the couch. She glanced at the clock noting that it was already 21:22 while nibbling idly at the quill that managed to find its way between her lips. She was in the den that served as a joint study for her and her electric blue maned roommate and wouldn't admit that Vinyl's laid back attitude had rubbed off on her a bit. Instead of being in her firm high backed chair that was in front of the writing table where she normally worked on her far side of the study she chose to relax on the couch that sat in the middle of the room facing the DJ booth that was the wub loving pony's. She leaned back down over her sheet music and started to scratch out the notes she had just hummed to herself content with the way they sounded following what had already been written before the sound of the front door opening and slamming gave her a start dropping the quill off the side of the couch. She expected to hear Vinyl shout out her general greeting of "Oh Octi!! I'm home!!" but nothing of the sort came but instead the stomping of running hooves is what caused the Cellist's ears to twitch. Vinyl Scratch though more popularly known as DJ PON-3, pronounced pown-ee, came bursting into the study saddle bags being consumed by a light blue glow before being lifted off the DJ's body then unceremoniously launched to a corner on the floor, Octavia winced slightly as she was sure she heard something break. Vinyl didn't even notice that her roommate Octavia, whom the white pony swore had more patience than Celestia, was right there in the middle of the room looking at her while she went straight to her record library horn a glow with her magic again pulling dozens of records at a time towards the unicorn. The DJ sighed openly sending the records flying before pulling more off the shelves and even tossing her beloved shades off her face not able to see clearly from the slightly dim lighting that was in the study. She shook her head in annoyance and practically jumped over to another wall just dropping the 20 or so records she was holding up with her magic to the floor not happy with the genre of the music in question. Octavia who was quiet and decided to stay laying there with her head turned towards her clearly bothered friend tilting her head slightly before taking another glance at the clock sensing that something, aside from the obvious, was off. 22:01. She nodded her head confirming her suspicions. Her best friend was home early. Which concerning normal ponies was all in all not a big deal. But, when it concerned Vinyl, something had to be up. The mare would often wander into the house they shared at 01:00 when her gig ended and, more often than not, as late as 03:30 a mere 2 hours before Celestia herself readied herself to raise the sun in the summer. Not begin a pony for masking her intentions when it came to her one true friend cleared her throat loud enough to capture Vinyl's attention but clearly failed miserably as the unicorn in question had managed to find one record that seemed to agree with her and set it down in its jacket on the turn table next to her to keep it handy. "Vinyl Scratch!" Vinyl shifted in surprise her mane and tail standing on end while Octavia covered her mouth with her hooves in shock both sets of eyes wide open between the two ponies. Octavia cleared her throat as she regained her composure while Vinyl turned around to finally see her prim and posh roommate finally realizing that of course she is home. Vinyl sheepishly rubbed the back of her head with a hoof while she looked over her best friend's appearance noting the slightly disheveled look to the Cellist's usually perfect bow-tie and collar. "Oh... Hey there Tavi.. I'm home." the white mare said managing to lock eyes with Octavia as she settled down on her haunches facing the black maned mare. Octavia sighed slightly though nodded her head the general brash manner in which she spoke quickly finding purchase on her tongue despite how genuinely concerned she was for Vinyl, "Oh? I had hardly noticed. Welcome back Vinyl." Octavia shook her head flinging her mane out of her face, it had grown rather long and was in need of a trim she finally admitted to herself, and cleared her head. "What is going on with you Vinyl? You come crashing on in here and start tossing your own belongings everywhere creating a mess. You are also back hours before I think you even consider thinking about home. Just what has you in such a brash and completely unacceptable manner?" She turned her head away from Vinyl slightly and mumbled under her breath moving to pick up her dropped quill, "...... you didn't even notice I was here...." Vinyl giggled nervously as she looked around herself and saw her records strewn about the study on her side, a few of them even seemed to be broken also noticing that she was sitting on one. She stood up and started to collect her records with her magic putting on her best sorry Octi, don't be mad at me please face, a face that she had unwittingly perfected over the months they knew each other. She started to stack the ones that were still undamaged and put the broken ones in their own stack with a sheet of paper and a pen on top of it. She was going to have to replace those and hoped that none of those were her hard to come by ones. "My bad Octi..., I was in such a rush I wasn't payin' any attention. Its just that..., well..., ohh.., This is my probably my big break!" She finally spit out in joy jumping up and down in a manner Pinkie Pie would wipe a tear away in pride. Octavia who was preparing to shove her face into her hoof was caught by surprise. "Just what do you mean Vinyl?" Being a fellow musician, though Octavia was being more generous of the use of that word when it concerned Vinyl than every fiber in Rarity's being, knew what it meant to any artist, the words 'Big Break', especially since she managed to get her own a couple of months ago landing her name on the tip of every posh pony's tongue. Octavia jumped up off the couch and galloped over to Vinyl and hugged her best friend tight enough to cut off her air before letting go. "I'm so happy for you Vinyl!" She smiled standing up straight as the spiky maned mare fought to get air back in her lungs, causing Octavia to blush light enough to hide. "Thanks Octi." Vinyl managed to finally breathe out finally getting all the air back into her lungs and sat back down as Octavia beamed like a proud parent sitting down across from her. Vinyl getting her thoughts together finally managed to explain to the clearly waiting Octavia. "I know that you aren't one to follow the types of music I work with but a really famous DJ named Whinny Benassi!! He works with really big name ponies across a lot of industries I wouldn't even know where to start!!" The white mare stopped talking once she was out of breath but continued seeing that she still had her best friends full attention. "After this I wont have to work in dives anymore. No more back ally clubs! I would finally have my name in lights for all of Canterlot and Manehatten to see! The whole of Equestria and Beyond will know my name and beg for my skills!" During this explanation Vinyl through a foreleg around Octavia pulling her tight against her waving her free hoof through the air in front of them as if showing her grand illusions off of the new world to her roommate. Octavia managed to wriggle herself free of the ecstatic pony's grip and trotted back over to the couch she had her work and quill laid out on but still gave the DJ her attention, "Well I couldn't be anymore happy for you Vinyl. I'm sure you must now have a lot on your plate and have some work to do but what is the rush? I'm sure you have plenty of time." That's when Vinyl shifted and immediately went back to scanning through her records though managed to stack them up on the floor rather than throwing them about. "Well.. I don't have an agent.. I can't afford one on my salary.. unlike you. So I didn't really find this all out till tonight at my set when Benassi's agent came up to me while I was getting ready for my primary set after opening for a new colt. And asked if I was ready for my dual set with Benassi. I honestly had no idea and I thought the phone calls were just pranks. So I stopped responding after the second one. But Whinny Benassi was there and heard my opening and was pleased. I said I was of course ready and then he said he would see me at that new ultra high end club that is opening tomorrow, ehh you probably don't know about it with it not being your kind of music. So I canceled my set and said the newbie could share it with the closer and rushed back here as fast as I could. But after of course gloating to every-pony there about where I was playing tomorrow night! Hehe..hehe..." Vinyl went back to mad disk searching finally finding another that seemed like it would be good enough. As happy as the up and coming DJ was the Cellist could clearly see how distressed her friend was fully knowing oh to well what she was going through after experiencing herself first-hoof. Though Octavia could feel herself wanting to chide the unicorn she knew she couldn't, at least not after being in her friends hooves not all that long ago. "Well Vinyl.. it seems like you have quite a bit of work ahead of you and not much time to do it in. I'll leave you to it but try to keep things down. I have work of my own to do after all." Vinyl offered out a simply reply that was less words but more or less sounds and Octavia wondered just how much had the entertainer had bitten off. She climbed back up on the couch and went back to her work as Vinyl started to spin on of the records to give herself background music to work much to Octavia's chagrin though let it go. This was Vinyl's time to shine and she would be patient with her, if only for tonight. This brought Octavia back to the current time not realizing how entranced she was watching and decided to get up off the couch and offer her assistance. She may not know what to do, per say, but the great master cellist Octavia couldn't help a clearly distressed friend what was she? Vinyl was now looking over a collection of about 20 songs that she thought would work but only had her heart set on two not noticing Octavia walk up to her from behind due to her focused mind. The classical mare reared up on her hind legs and placed her hooves down onto Vinyl's shoulders and started to rub firmly opting to massage her stress away though only getting a started snort and jump out of the clearly stressed DJ. "Relax Vinyl.. Its only me. Come on.. take a break.. Its clear that you are a little too stressed to actually get any work done." The unicorn wheeled around on her hind legs to protest that she didn't have the time but the stern look that was shot at her made her sink into submission. "Ok.. yeah.. you're right Octi.. There's no way I'll get anything done with how I am right now..." Defeated and admittedly exhausted Vinyl followed her friend over to the couch she was working on and sat down after Octavia climbed on and patted at a spot next to her with her hoof. As Vinyl got settled Octavia managed to glance at the clock noting it read 01:42 thinking lightly to herself as she got settled next to Vinyl. 'Wow.. was I just sitting there looking at her that long before deciding to do anything?' Octavia motioned Vinyl to face away from her while she herself sat flat on her flank her hind-legs spread outside either side of the stressed mare that sat on her haunches and Vinyl obliged. Soon Vinyl groaned out in relief as the surprisingly dexterous hooves of her friend worked out the knots and stress up and down her back relaxing her more than she had been all week and it was quickly taking its toll. Octavia looked up from her hooves as they rubbed into Vinyl's back finally taking note of how the unicorn kept shifting forwards and back and went to voice how she wanted the mare to stay still but a light snore made it to her ears first. Octavia smiled and just simply wrapped her hooves around the rarely peaceful pony pulling her back against her and leaned back into the couch deciding that she would wake her in a bit after seeing the relaxed and happy expression etched into Vinyl's features. Octavia yawned a bit blinking a couple of times, "Yes.. I'll let her.. just.. rest.." She nodded off nuzzling against the surprisingly soft and well kept spiky electric blue mane not even realizing she didn't even finish her train of thought. //-------------------------------------------------------// Love get out of my way //-------------------------------------------------------// Love get out of my way "Heellloooo.... Manehatten to Octi. Are you in there?" asked a white coated mare with wild blue hair, who was waving a hoof in front of a near by mare. "Wh-hu-wha-?" Came a rapid response from an ash-grey coated earth pony whose eyes rapidly came into focus on the unicorn in front of her. "What is it Vinyl? What are you doing?", Octavia asked quizzically. Vinyl rolled her eyes though they were hidden behind her boldly purple glasses a grin on her face as she moved back beside her best friend. Wait.. When did we get out here?.. Wai- Before Vinyl could let the thought hold any ground she was already responding to the question. "You were all zoned out like you were in a trance or something. I've been trying to get your attention for a a good couple of minuets." Octavia craned her head to the side as if she was looking at something she could not comprehend, "Was I?" 'Well.. I did just fall asleep so..Wa-' The earth pony's thoughts were sounded out by the unicorn. "Yeah, you did. I didn't even notice until I saw a bunch of ponies looking at you." Octavia sighed heavily and shook her head clearing her mind noticing that they were outside on the sidewalk in what looked like downtown Manehatten. Vinyl shrugged it all off and threw a foreleg around slightly upset earth mare and used it to pull her close against her waving a hoof at the late evening sky, "Whatever, Come on its almost night and I won the bet. I get to take you out and show you what fun actually is." Octavia sighed out begrudgingly as she let the mare drag her along down the street the neon lights starting to come to life as the last of the days light faded. Octavia flipped her main about getting it to sit back in a proper position after Vinyl removed her leg from around her neck. She quickly recalled what led her to be in the situation she was in now while glancing to the side at the victorious mare. She had bet that Vinyl could not last a week as a prim and proper high society mare complete with her natural colors and not to wear those bug-eyed shades. Though neither of the two would ever admit it to the other, Vinyl looked like she could have been royalty. Though Octavia was quite sure that her knowledge of music outside of wubs and the fact she looked nothing like her usual self is what got her through that week. A light blush that faded as fast as it came crept upon the dark maned mare's features as she recalled the dozen's of photos she took of her that way. Vinyl who was currently per-occupied with looking at the street signs to make sure the two of them were right on course didn't notice the blush that had covered her musically inclined friend. Though the DJ had used that motion in it's self to hide her own blush and distract herself from her friend. Though, as they walked side by side she couldn't place why she felt her cheeks had flushed in the first place. She chanced a sideways glance at the mare next to her and felt herself smile at her involuntarily. The bow wielding musician was slightly off in a world of her own again looking up at the rapidly changing skyline completely oblivious to the, somewhat staring, eyes of her friend. Vinyl had smirked shaking her head side to side managing to suppress a bemused giggle as she turned her attention back to the sidewalk as they both began to round a corner. The way Octavia could so easily be lost in another world was one of the dozen, if not numerous, things that Vinyl loved her for. Vinyl came to an intimidate stop while two of her hooves were still in mid step as she caught up to her own subtle thoughts. 'L-LOVED!?! Wha-!? Hold up!' Vinyl now far to caught up in her own thoughts didn't realize that in her current pose she had no sense of balance causing her to fall over herself though her head on crash into the pavement afterwards finally pulled her back into reality. Vinyl collided muzzle first into the sidewalk with none to pleased sounding grunt. "Fuck! Ow..." The DJ was picking herself up off the ground as Octavia, whom had continued walking oblivious to what happened, wheeled back around on her hind hooves and rushed to the aid of her friend with a bewildered look on her face. Vinyl Was now upright on her flank seated down and was gingerly rubbing at her injured nose now noticing that her shades were not tinting her world purple. Octavia, for her own credit, suppressed a sigh though her eyes still rolled as she sat down in front of Vinyl and collected her shades with her hooves, "Will you live Vinyl? Or should I start forging your will now?" Vinyl managed a small chuckle at the light jab as the pain in the tip of her muzzle faded slowly, "Not this time Tavi.. I'm afraid you will have to deal with me for a lot longer." Octavia smiled as Vinyl reassured her unasked question as to weather or not she was fine and moved to return the shades she had but stopped mid motion when her tyrian eyes locked with the DJ's off hued cardinal ones. Octavia tilted her head slightly to the side unblinking staring deep into her friend's eyes thinking to herself, 'I never really got the chance to actually look at her eyes before... They're rather beautiful in the day's dying light..'. Vinyl stopped moving slowly realizing that Octavia had stopped as well and was staring right into her eyes with an intensity she only saw her have while the cellist was performing. Vinyl flushed red and cleared her throat lightly averting her head from Octavia's gaze unable to keep looking back at pale violet pair any longer. "Ahmnn... Can I have my shades back Tavi?" Octavia blanched stuttering lightly while her pupils were dilating wildly before coming into proper focus freed from her reverie from Vinyl's actions. Her face flushed as she held the shades out for the DJ turning her head away as well before standing back up on her hooves and quickly turning back around when she felt the shades levitate from her hooves. The cellist held a fore-hoof to her chest trying to slow her heart rate feeling it beat light-years a minute her body refusing to calm down for the time being. What.. happened? Why was I staring at her like that? Why does my face feel like its on fire?' Getting back on her own legs Vinyl finished adjusting her purple specs with her magic and quickly walked past the ash-coated mare her own blush still viable though fading. "We should get going. Don't want to waste our time just standing around outside doing nothing eh?" Octavia took a long deep breath as she feel in line besides the wub wielding musician trying to get a mental grip of what had happened. "You're right. Though I would love to get out of my end of the bet we are already out here." The pair continued walking in a slight silence that the earth-pony was grateful for as she was coming to terms with her actions. 'Why was I so entranced by her eyes like that. I've seen them enough times but.. just why did they seem like so much more just then?' The more Octavia thought about it more and less sense it made. She knew her friend for a long enough time for them to be as close as they are now. She obviously liked her a lot because.. 'Well.. I love her for a lot of things. She's dependable for one. She knows how to calm me down.. even if she is the one who riles me up the most. Wait.... Love?!' As Octavia was in her own world vinyl was doing her best to stay distracted from any world. She just couldn't get that full intensive gaze out of her head. 'Curse those beautiful soft purple eyes.. Beautiful!? Arghh!! I can't even stop thinking about her like this in my own head!' the famed DJ suppressed the urge to let out a loud aggravated sigh and decided that she just wouldn't think about it or anything for that matter for the time being. Vinyl looked up again at the street signs but stopped paying attention to them as she could easily hear the deafened booming of a heavy electronic bass beat coming from around the next corner. "Finally we are just about there. Ready to have some fun Tavi?" Octavia, to her own credit, tilted her head to the side and sighed rolling her eyes, "If it means getting this torture over with as soon as possible then Yes. I'm quite ready to have 'fun' as you would put it." Vinyl just grinned as the rounded the corner the club coming in to view finally, "Oh Tavi.. don't give me any ideas." Though neither of them could attach a name to the place for the life of them as the pair lightly trotted up to the male pegasus bouncer outside the door. Vinyl motioned with a hoof to Octavia to stay put as she moved up to talk with the bouncer, "I got this." The black maned mare once again let her eyes roll about in their sockets. Vinyl dramatically waved a hoof in front of the bouncer's face while trying to make herself look mysterious. "We are not the mares you are looking for.." Both the bouncer and Octavia groaned painfully as they face hoofed simultaneously. Without even lifting his head up and away from his hoof. "Just... go inside.." Vinyl smirked in triumph while turning to face her friend. "Told ya I had it." Begrudgingly Octavia followed the blue maned mare into the night club the music quickly becoming deafening as they passed though the inner doors. Octavia flattened her ears as the bass rattled her ear drums before she could properly adjust and relaxing her stance. "Do we really have to be here vinyl?" The cellist asked but quickly realized the futility of her words as she couldn't even hear herself though the unicorn being questioned still turned to the earth pony raising a hoof to her ear though the expression on her face made it clear that she wasn't planning on listening even if she could. Octavia shot the DJ a flat glare which only caused her to laugh in response. Octavia mused, 'Seems like we are past the point of words now..' Though she was cut short of thinking any further as Octavia was dragged into the middle of the dance floor by a fore-leg full of faceless ponies jumping and shouting about in a manner that Octavia would never refer to as 'dancing'. As Vinyl let her go she bumped right up against her pressing the entire side of her body against the cellist's as Vinyl herself was bumped into causing the both of them to blush at the extremely close contact though both thankful that it was almost impossible to see the other clearly in the strobe lights. Vinyl took the initiative to start dancing though her heart was already racing again moving both hooves on either side of her in time with the one-two beat of the base in an odd looking shuffling motion as Octavia would put it as she looked at her. vinyl leaned in and to her credit didn't shout into Octavia's ear, "Dance with me Octi! It's time to have fun and act crazy!" Octavia let out a bit of a laugh from the tail end of Vinyl's statement, 'That mare has enough crazy for the whole city alone.' She tilted her head to voice a rather obvious flaw in her friend's plan, "You know darn well that I don't 'dance' like that or even know how." Just as she finished she felt her hooves be enclosed by a shimmering sky blue aura as she watched the DJ's horn envelope with the same light. "Allow me to show you then! You'll love it once you get a hang of it!" Octavia whinnied in surprise as her hooves started moving on their own reflecting the movements of Vinyl's and only managed to keep herself upright before managing anything that resembled balance. Vinyl shouted over the dull roar of the crowd and the needlessly loud music just enough so that Octavia could only barely understand her, "Come on Octi! One-Two! Left side to right side! That's it! Keep it up!" vinyl whipped about causing Octavia to do the same but instead of screaming in surprise she was shouting out in fun before realizing that the two were now face to face getting the earth pony to grin sheepishly in embarrassment. Vinyl wore that triumphant smirk again knowing full well that there was no way that Octavia could talk her way out of that proof of her having fun. Vinyl released her magical hold on Octavtia's hooves and was surprised to see that Octavia was keeping up the dancing on her own perfectly mirroring her own movements doubting that she even realized she let go. Octavia was far to focused on vinyl at this point now her heart racing a million light-years a second. This was fun. This was.. well.. awesome! She smiled wide at Vinyl as they continued to dance sliding to the left as Vinyl slid to the right spinning around on their hind-legs before sliding back so they were face to face. Vinyl now had a grin to match her friend's only now slightly becoming aware that they had a crowd forming around the two and even hearing the DJ change tracks to better fit the show the two were giving the club. The pair had faced about and started moon-walking back towards one another bushing against the other in the process and both went to move to the side inadvertently causing their muzzles to firmly rub against the others. Vinyl's eyes shot open wide as she gasped silently her heart pounding almost painfully in her chest. She turned her head to the side finally registering the sound of the record on her turntable spinning idle with the music no longer playing. She shut it off with her magic and settled in closer to the soft warm object falling back asleep just as quickly as she had woken up her cheek burning hot though she couldn't be bothered to begin to remember what was just going on. Author's Note OK! About darn time I worked up the nerve to not only finish but post this chapter. I have went though many a mental struggle on how to handle this chapter. As it is, well, an opener to how I plan to write out the story. I had wrote this chapter at least 3 times over. The fist time I had put in so much detail in describing the environments it heavily overshadowed the story its self. I then started over from scratch and then proceeded to absolutely hate the direction I was taking it. So I scrapped it completely and started over again. So we now have this, though quite raw, finished product. Though my main concern for the story is this; I don't want my concept to become an excuse. I.E.; Leaving out building descriptions. Descriptions of background characters and so on. So I am now asking this; I implore any one who is up to proofreading my chapters to contact me on my account page or even here in the story comments. I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you again for reading.
