A Losing Battle

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Rainbow Dash flew up into the air. Her jaw hurt, she was seeing stars, and she tasted blood. “How did I get up here again?” she thought hazily. She could still feel her wings folded on her back. “I don’t think I got myself up here.” She turned her head to the right and saw a man in a red hood with large blood red wings looming over her. “Oh right,” she thought. “That jerk...hit me. And now I’m up here.” She looked to her left and saw Little D with his large white wings. “But what’s D doing up here?” She returned her gaze to the sky but her view was blocked by a curved blade that was hooked around a long blade right above her chest. “Oh. He came up here to help me. That was nice of him.”

She watched as D’s face strain as he threw Steel’s sword away from her. He then took his free hand and grabbed Rainbow by the waist. Little D kicked Steel in the stomach quickly, causing him to double over. He then sent another swift kick to Steel’s head and dove down to the the S.S. Blue.

“Holy shit!” Blue yelled as D hit the deck of the boat. “What the hell are you?”

“Magic,” D said hurriedly and jumped to the seats at the back of the boat. He plucked a long white feather out of his wings and tied it around Rainbow Dash’s chin. The feather began glowing green then disintegrated on her skin. “Keep an eye on her, Sparks.” D jumped onto the back of the boat then leapt up high into the sky.

“Holy shit,” Blue mumbled as he watched D and Steel clash blades again. “Just what the hell have I gotten myself into?”

Little D brought his sickle down at Steel who deflected it swiftly with his broadsword. D slashed at Steel’s stomach; but Steel simply slid his sword lower and caught the blade on his. D struggled in his attempt to overpower his former friend, but Steel wasn’t budging an inch.

“What’s wrong, brother dear?” Steel mocked coldly. “You seem to be having a bit of trouble.”

“Fuck you,” D spat.

“Now now, theres no call for such harsh language,” Steel tisked. “I think I need to put you in time-out.” Steel readied his free hand and struck Little D in the face, sending him spiraling down and crashing into the ocean. “And here I thought he was going to be a problem.” Steel turned his icy gaze to the S.S. Blue. “I can kill Little D and the Element of Loyalty all in the same day.” Steel began his slow descent to the small metal ship. “I might even get that inventor to work for me as well, or I could break his little toy and leave him stranded in the middle of the ocean. Oh decisions, decisions.” Steel gently floated down and landed quietly on the hood of the ship. “Greetings young inventor. I believe we’ve met before.”

“Y-yeah,” Blue stammered. “But I think you told me to scram.”

“Oh, that.” Steel strolled forward and stepped down onto the deck of the boat, making Blue stumble backward. “I’m afraid you had caught me in a rather rotten mood. I’m sure you’ll find me to be much cheerier.”

“Yeah, totally,” Blue swallowed.

“And I’ll have you know something. I am much more generous when I’m happy. So I’ll tell you what. You let me kill that girl behind you and I’ll let you supply my army with as many wonderful things you can conceive.”

“And if I don’t let you kill her?” Before Blue could even blink a large fist wrapped around his head.

“If you don’t,” Steel repeated coldly as he lifted Blue off of the boat deck. “I will pop your head like a grape. Really, it’d just be one less death in the world.”

“You’re quite generous!” Blue gasped in pain. “Can you please let go of my head?”

“Of course I can.” Steel smiled and dropped Blue onto the floor. “Now that I’ve spared your life, you’ll surely want to join my side.”

“Yeah, whatever you say man,” Blue groaned and sat up. “Oh shit I gotta get out of here.” He got to his feet and looked around the boat for anything that he could use to get away. Then he spotted it. His glove box. “Actually Mr., uh.”

“Lord Steel.”

“Right, well then Mr. Lord Steel.” Blue smiled and put on his best salesman routine. He strutted over to the ship’s glove box. “Let me show you my latest invention. I don’t know what you’re planning on doing but my latest, uh, camera is guaranteed to knock you off our feet!” He opened the box and pulled out a plastic orange instrument with a short, protruding barrel. “Now, Lord Steel, I’m going to need you to stand on that side of the boat near the water and I’ll take the photo. Hurry now. I may be an inventor, but I know when the perfect time to take a photo over water is and now is that time.”

“If all you have to offer is a camera--”

“Believe me, I have more to offer than a camera. I built this ship with nothing but a dream, immense dedication, and about two hundred thousand bits worth of parts.”

Steel grunted a reply and walked to the side of the boat. “Is this where you want me?”

“Perfect! Just stand there and keep looking handsome!” Blue leveled the instrument at Steel’s face. “Just gotta make sure everything is lined up properly.” Steel crossed his arms and frowned. “Almost done big man. This is a delicate art or so I’m told.” Blue thumbed down a black tab at the top of the tool and lined up a thin black nub at the end of the barrel. “Ok I’m gonna count to three and I’ll take the picture. Can you smile for me Lord Steel?” Steel’s scowl only deepened. “Guess not. Kay! One. Two. Three!”

Blue pulled the trigger and grinned smugly as a bright red fireball shot out of the instrument and hit Steel in the face. Steel stumbled back to the side of the boat as he roared in pain. He clutched his face and glared at Blue who was taking advantage of the situation. Blue dashed forward and shoulder-checked the massive Red Walker as hard as he could sending Steel over the edge of the boat and into the water. “I can’t believe that worked,” Blue laughed airily. He then turned his attention to Rainbow Dash. “Now let’s get you outta here before he comes back, sweet cheeks.” He quickly scooped up Rainbow Dash and climbed onto the long wooden dock and began running toward the shore. Suddenly, the dock shook violently. Blue looked over his shoulder and saw a very angry, and very wet Red Walker.

“So It would appear that you’ve decided to die, inventor.”

“Only if you can catch me!” Blue sprinted forward and ran straight into Steel’s chest plate. “Ok, you caught me. But what’s say we put our differences aside and we go our separate ways? Sound good?” Steel responded by taking Blue’s head tightly in his grip. “Shit!”

“I am going to mash your brain into jelly and grind your bones into paste.”

“Or you could, fu-, let me go!” Blue dropped Rainbow Dash and moved his hands to Steel’s and attempted to pry his fingers loose.

“No.” Steel’s grip tightened. “No, I don’t believe I will.”

“Allow me to persuade you otherwise, then.” Little D swooped down and struck Steel atop his head with the back end of his scythe, making him drop Blue on his rump. D then swung his handle into Steel’s back and sent him flying out over the water. “We should get going. When he gets back he’s going to be very upset.” Little D picked up both Blue and Rainbow, threw them over his shoulders, and ran up the shore and into the island.

“Ah c’mon!” Johnny looked through a brown telescope and scowled at the retreating White Walker. “I got all this shit set up for nothing.”

“Yeah!” Added Numb Nuts. “I was hoping for some real neat Dragon Ball Z fighting or something.”

“If we did that we would need eight hours worth of music,” Grunted Reason

“Yeah well, guess I don’t need any of this then.” Johnny bitterly kicked the speakers and the phonograph into the ocean and sat down in the boat with a huff.

“Didn’t you rent those?”

Johnny sighed deeply and took off his jacket. “Man, today just sucks.” He dove into the water. “First I accidentally murdered a whole train full of innocent and not so innocent people, then I woke up in a sewer, and now I’m risking losing the deposit on these pieces of crap.” Johnny grabbed the equipment and swam back up to the dock. “Breathe darn you!” He threw his equipment on the deck and began punching each of them in their exact center. He placed his face into the bell of the phonograph and blew a few quick breaths into it. Minutes later, water shot out of his sound equipment and they started coughing.

“Y-you saved me,” the phonograph said in awe. “I am forever in you debt.”

“All I ask of you is that you work together with your speaker friends and spread beautiful music all across the world.”

“Of course!” the phonograph said. “Of course we will! Won’t we guys?”

“You know it!” the speakers agreed.

“Very well, now I must go. My friends need me.” With that, Johnny stuck out his arm and willed his jacket back to himself, then he sprinted up the dock and began searching for his friends while his equipment cheered him on from the dock.
