Chapter Three: Crash and Burn

The morning began to break into the windows of the house, the sun shining onto the golden mare lying in the bed I placed her in. I was downstairs, making her breakfast with a smile on my face. While doing that I began looking at the sun. As she slept, I quickly trotted upstairs to check on the sleeping mare while holding the trey with breakfast on with my wings.

“Hey sleepy mare, rise and shine.” I slowly walked in, presenting the breakfast to her.

As she slowly awoke from her slumber, she rubbed her eyes and yawned. “Oh, good morning Tornado.” She looked at the breakfast with a smile. “Breakfast in bed?”

“Of course, I’d do anything for my mare.” I gently placed the meal on her lap, then giving her coffee to start the day. “Today’s the big day.” I said, looking out of the window at the sun.

“Indeed it is Tornado,” the mare sat up and began eating. “You’ll be there…right?”

I glanced over to her, “of course Spitty.” I smiled softly. “How could I miss it?”

“Thank you.” She looked down, noticing that she slept in her Wonderbolt uniform. “Well, no need to change.” She giggled softly and looked back up at me. That giggle always made me smile; it never failed to make me cheerful.

“I’ll be rooting for you.” I said, placing a hoof on her shoulder with a smile. I looked into her eyes and saw them sparkle from the sunlight.

“Thanks Tornado.” She leaned in and kissed me on the lips, I kissed back and blushed. Once we broke apart, she finished her breakfast and got out of bed.

“I’m going to take a shower, if you leave while I’m in there, put a note on the kitchen counter or something.” I stepped into the bathroom, closing the door but leaving a little gap in it.

“Sure thing Tornado.” Spitfire quickly trotted downstairs to wait for me; obviously I had to hurry if I wanted to leave at the same time as her. As I turned the shower on, with the water crashing onto me, I began to think of mine and hers future. Something’s good and something’s bad, mostly good of course.

“I’m sure he’ll meet me there.” Spitfire spoke, placing a written note on the kitchen counter. As she left, she pulled her goggles over her face and onto her eyes. Once she took flight, she flew towards Cloudsdale with a small grin of confidence. “It’s time to pull of the best show in our history.”

As I exited the shower and headed downstairs, drying myself I saw the note Spitfire left and hoped I wasn't too late. I dried myself rather quickly and then flew out the house, flying towards Cloudsdale. I landed at Cloudsdale roughly, with a huge thump noise on impact.

“Gah, talk about a rough landing!” I groaned in my thoughts. “I can’t see Spitty anywhere, maybe she’s already there or maybe she hasn't arrived yet.” I then saw the mare in the corner of my eye, flying towards the stadium. “There she is, I’m not late.”

I quickly took flight, following her there. Once I arrived, a couple of bodyguards shouted over to me and it looks like they were holding a photo of me.

“Hey, you!” The bodyguard boomed.

“Y-yes?” I gulped, I was so nervous but I slowly flew over, expecting something bad to happen.

“You must be Tornado Dash, correct?” They looked down upon my shaking body and then leaned down.

“Y-yes, sir.” I nodded, shaking like a leaf. I was covering my face with my hooves, waiting for the first punch to be given to me.

“Spitfire said you were coming, the VIP area is yours.” The ponies stood aside, granting me access down the red hallway ahead that had a red carpet.

I suddenly stopped shaking and calmed down. “Oh, thank you…I thought it was something else.” I chuckled in embarrassment and slowly hovered down the hallway.

“That was awkward.” I said in my thoughts, hovering upwards to the sitting area. Once I arrived at the sitting area, I sat on a seat. I was pretty early too, which was better than being late. I took a look at the view; I could see Canterlot, Ponyville and even Manehattan from here. I could also see the entire track clearly, with nothing blocking my view. About half an hour later, the Wonderbolts finally made their way onto the track. As they came into vision the crowd went wild, and I did along with them.

“Welcome one and all; I am Spark, proudly bringing you another Wonderbolt show here, live at the Wonderbolt stadium!” Spoke the announcer behind the microphone.  The crowd roared in excitement, again I found myself cheering along with them.

“Come on Spitfire, make me proud!” I yelled, clapping. I could only just hear myself over the noise that echoed around me. I looked around in amazement at how many ponies there were, and how great it felt actually being here.

“Wonderbolts, take your positions!” The announcer yelled. “The Wonderbolts today are Spitfire, Soarin’, Fleetfoot and Rapidfire!” The voice boomed and echoed off the many different materials that held the structure along with the clouds. “On your marks, get set…GO!”

The Wonderbolts took off, as fast as lightning. As they edged around the first turn, Spitfire took the lead. She was followed by Soarin’ and then Rapidfire behind him. Fleetfoot was in last, but not by much. The longer it went on, the more intense it got, I was literally on the edge of my seat.

“Come on Spitfire, you can do this!!” I yelled, trying to be heard from her. As I jumped up and down on my seat, Soarin’ managed to take the lead. “Come on Spitfire, overtake him!” This time, I shouted a little louder than before, this time I was heard and she quickly overtook him.

“She heard me, she actually heard me!” I thought to myself with happiness. When it came down to the final lap, the tension started to rise higher than it already was. Now I was literally on the edge of my seat, leaning so far forward I was about to fall off.

“Spitfire’s getting close to winning!” The announcer shouted. As he did, Spitfire lost control and then crashed into many obstacles and clouds before tumbling down to earth. “Spitfire’s down!”

“Spitfire!” I quickly jumped from my seat and began plunging down vertically to save her. “Spitfire, I’m coming!” She was unconscious and one of her wings looked broken. Also there was a smear of blood from her left nostril, coming down her muzzle.

“Come on, I have to save her!” I said in my thoughts. I saw the Wonderbolts following me as I glanced over my shoulder.

“Sir, we can handle this.” Soarin’ said, placing a hoof on my shoulder as he flew by my side.

“No, you can’t!” I yelled, looking back at her as we started coming closer to the ground. “I have to save her!” I quickly dart down and grab her, shooting back upwards with fully formed tears in my eyes.  The Wonderbolts seemed shocked at how fast I flew and the fact I saved her.

As I landed at the hospital, I burst through the doors quickly. I was still flying, carrying Spitfire in my hooves and placing her on the desk. I forcefully cleared my throat, wanting attention from the receptionist. The white mare, with glasses with black frames looked up at me. Her eyes were sky blue and her mane was sky blue and also with a darker shade of blue to go along with it. Her mane was silky and majestic. Her cutie mark was a red medical cross and she was wearing a pink nursing outfit.

“Oh hello sir, may I help you?” She asked softly, looking up at me.

“Yes please, help that mare in front of you…now!” I spoke sternly.

“I-is this Spitfire?” She asked again, with curiosity and also amazement. “My word it is!”

“Yes, it is!” I said impatiently and then glared at the beautiful white mare across the desk. “Now, help her!”

“Right away sir!” She quickly got onto her hooves and lifted her onto the stretcher. As she did, Spitfire let out a few groans of agony in her sleep. “What happened to her?” She asked as we both carried her down the hallway.

“Well it happened at the Wonderbolt show; she was coming around the final turn and then…lost control.” I said, now with my voice becoming shaky.

“Well, she has a nose bleed. Also her suit is torn badly in the chest area and covered in blood…” She took a closer look, “her wing is also broken and she has a nose bleed.” She looked up at me, confused. “Surely clouds couldn't have done this much damage.”

“She slammed into them faster than you think, and besides you’re an earth pony.” I sighed. “You would never know what it feels like to crash into a cloud at such a force.”

“I see, well this way!” She quickly turned unexpectedly to the left, into an operating room. I was hoping they wouldn't have to operate.

“Why are we in here?” I asked, now with my voice out of control and shaking rapidly.

“We need to examine the wounds, do me a favor and roll the suit down about half way down her arms.” She prepared getting out bandages and other medical equipment.

I nodded and did as I was told, looking at the scar across Spitfire’s chest.

“Poor Spitfire, she must be in a world of pain...even in her sleep.” After talking in my thoughts, I sighed.

“Okay, let’s have a look.” The nurse made her way over and looked at the scar. “It’s not too deep, but it will take a lot of washing and disinfecting.” She started applying some disinfectant on the wound with a cotton cloud. As she dabbed it, Spitfire let out a groan which forced her to be gentler until she was silent. She then grabbed a group of cotton clouds and dabbed them all in the disinfectant and started to dab it on Spitfire’s wound, speeding up the process. “It seems to be disinfected; now I need to wash the wound, get me some water.”

I nodded, “right away!” I quickly grabbed a bucket and filled it with water, cold water. I then carried it back to her and placed it on the desk next to her.

“Thank you.” She smiled, dabbing some cotton in the water and then gently dabbing the wound with the cotton, to wash it. Each dab took some blood away. “Now, bandages!” She commanded, reaching her hoof out for some.

I passed them her and just watched with hope that Spitfire would be okay. I watched her wrap the bandage around her chest and then back. Shortly after she applied a cast on her broken wing and then cleaned her nose. “There, all done.” She wiped her head and let out a breath of relief.

“Will she be okay?” I asked curiously, with a soft tone.

“Yeah, she’ll be fine.” She nodded, “she’ll need to spend a night or two in the hospital for her cuts to scab over and then the wing should take about a week to heal.” She then went back to her work.

“Hey.” I turned the nurse towards me and the hugged her, getting the scent of sweetness from her mane. “Thank you.”

“It’s not a problem.” She said blushing and hugging back. “I’m just happy to help, now go on…take her to a room; she can sleep in her own room tonight.” She smiled warmly. I nodded and then gracefully picked her up with my wings, carrying her down the corridor to her room. Once I reached her room, I gently placed her down on the bed and gave her a kiss on the head.

“Sleep well, Spitty.” I had tears in my eyes to see the sight of her in pain, but I climbed into bed next to her and cuddled her. As I pulled the duvet over us, I slowly fell fast asleep, while cuddling my beautiful Spitfire.
