Chapter two: arrival

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The train ride wasn't very long. Most of the time that I have nothing to do, my brain makes up wierd topics for me to think over, like: Where did magic come from? How does magic work? Why do we need a horn? Stuff like that. I sat next to a mare with her daughter. the daughter kept looking at me, so I showed her a few magic tricks with approvel from the mare of course. I just love to see kids smile. It makes me feel like I know what I am doing.

When I got off, I walked out into the middle of a small market area. There  were not any skyscrapers or paved roads or concrete stuff. It was all so small and yet still, so beautiful. In the distance I could see an apple farm sprawled upon acres. There were brown, white, and yellow houses with some buildings that held spice for what there business was for. As I walked down the road, I saw a big boutique and a big business with a chocolate roof and a cupcake on top.

There were alot of ponies outside, walking about, getting their products and produce from the local venders. Some venders sold the wierdest things. One vender I saw was selling giant jars and vats of jelly. Who would need that much jelly? They must make alot of toast here.

As I trotted out of the market area, I saw this big place that seemed to be a hollowed out tree. I was drawn towards that place. It had a feeling that my dad had told me about, orbiting it. You know that feeling where you feel like somepony's following you? My family had innate sence towards those kinds of things. Something to do with our bloodline and magic and some other wierd stuff. I felt like I had to go to that place.

I went up to it and knocked on the door. I waited for an answer. Took a minute but I could hear voices from inside. The door opened and in front of me was a lavender unicorn standing in the doorway. "Hello?" She said politely. Actually politely this time. Not like the mare at the train station.

"Umm. Hello. I was wandering through town when I saw this place and... I felt like... Can I come in?" I told her, not able to find a good reason to have knocked on the door.

"Sure. My door's always open." Must not be any normal hollowed out tree. Because hollowed out trees are normal. Most ponies would just close the door on you in manehatten.

"Thank you." I said as I walked into the tree and saw that it was filled with books. What a perfect place for books. cut the wood out of the tree and make books. It's a give or take situation I guess.

"So what are you looking for. Magic, history, fiction. I have it all." She asked me, thinking I was here for a book.

"What? Oh. This is a library. Uh. I could learn some magic. Do I need to get a card or have a date assigned for return?" Most libraries make you get a card or something.

"No. No cards. No date. Just return it when you are done." She told me with a gleeful tone. I'm starting to like this one.

I went over to the wall of books that she pointed towards to be the wall of magic. I searched through, looking for something on bending light. Nothing seemed to come up. Nothing ever comes up. I stood up and looked back at the mare. She was sorting through some note card that she pulled out of a desk drawer. I stared at her before looking at her cutie mark. Sparkle? Are those stars? I can't really tell.

"Hello? Miss?" I was interupted before I could ask.

"Please, call me twilight sparkle." She told me. I like that name. She must be a stargazer.

"Right. Twilight sparkle, What is your special talent? If you don't mind me asking." Not something I would normaly ask a pony without even knowing them but it's too late now.

She turned around towards me to address my question. "My special talent is magic. Not specificly, but just magic. What would be your... special... talent?" She responded appropriately, slowing down to notice that I had no cutie mark. "Do you not have a... special talent?"

"What do you mean? Oh thats right. Glass ass." I started to say to my self in a quiet voice that could barely be heard.

"Glass what?"

"Um, nothing. I do actually have a cutie mark. It's just not there. My special talent is invisibility magic. Now what would that cutie mark look like?" I asked back with a grin on my face. Though she looked like she was thinking over it. "You don't have to answer that."

"Why do you ask?" She started, trying to keep the conversation going. Social chats have never been my strong point..

"Uh. I don't know. I just noticed your cutie mark and was curious what it was. I'm not really sure how to LOOK at magic, but that looks like magic to me." I tried to make that sound good. Was that good? I'm not sure what magic looks like. I guessed that it may have been the sparkles left behind after a teleport.

"Yeah. It's just magic sparkles. I got it when the princess asked me to be her personal protege. I can still remember it like it was yesterday." From that. I was astonished. She must be One of the best spell casters in equestria. Why is she stuck here living in this tree then. Not saying that this is a bad tree. I see a future mate in this one. Kinda sounds bad. I haven't even been traveling for a day and I'm already thinking about getting a mate. It's not my falt. It is my family duty to... create an even more magical and powerful offspring than myself.

Back to astonished. I can't believe this. But can she back it up. Now I have to see what she can do. "Well. That's quite impressive miss sparlkes. Not just anypony can be a protege of the princess. But tell me, can you back that up with proof."

"How do you mean? I have letters from the princess. They have her signature on them. I can get one and show you." She thought that I meant physical proof. I actually wanted magical proof. When it comes to magic, I am like butter on toast.

"No. I would like to have a magical duel with you. The loser has to teach the other pony something that they don't know how to do. Invisibility is my specialty but it isn't my only spell."  I really hope she is up for it. She lives in a library. There is a high possibility that she likes to learn new magic. As do I.

"I don't know, I'm not much of a competitor. Though I would like to learn some new spells. Plus, I have never seen invisibility. Could be pretty cool." When she started, I was worried that she would back out. But now I think she is in.

"So are you in?! Are you going to beat me." I tried a little pep talk. I think it worked. right before she spoke up, she got a big smile.

"Yeah. I feel like I could have a dual. Lets do this!" Yesss! I knew she was in. I could see it in her smile.
