A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Fluttershy flew over Ponyville watching residents work on rebuilding their homes or helping others do the same. It warmed her heart to see so many ponies doing such kind things for one another. Fluttershy's eyes then fell upon Applejack whom was helping a a green pony work on her home and flew down.

Applejack looked behind herself and gave a wave “Howdy, Fluttershy. What brings y'all over here?” She asked as she bucked a nail into the building.

“Well, I was on my way back to check on Spike and thought i'd say hello.” Fluttershy replied with a smile. “Is it safe to be bucking nails like that?” Fluttershy remarked as she watched Applejack buck the nail once again planting it firmly inside the plank of wood.

“It is if y'all are usin the right equipment.” Applejack replied lifting her right hoof to show Fluttershy that she was wearing a set of shoes with metal bottoms.

“Oh, I see.” Fluttershy replied feeling a sense of relief washing over her as well as a feeling of silliness for thinking that Applejack would do something so careless. “Well I need to check on Spike. I'll see you later.” Fluttershy replied and flew off in the direction of her cottage.

“That pony is actin a might odd.” Applejack replied taking note of the fact that Fluttershy was being a little more shy than usual.

“I couldn't agree more.” Rarity spoke up from behind her walking up now startling Applejack.

“Tarnation. Could y'all be a little more sneaker next time? Ah think my heart is still in my chest.” Applejack replied in a slightly annoyed tone earning a giggle from Rarity.

“Sorry, darling. I was watching from afar and thought I’d come over and offer my assistance.” Rarity replied with a smile.

Applejack suddenly burst out laughing at this much to Rarity's annoyance. “What is so funny?” Rarity asked in an aggravated tone.

Applejack stopped laughing for a few moments and looked at Rarity. “Y'all are serious? Let me laugh harder!” Applejack replied and fell to the ground laughing.

“Just because I work in a bouquet Applejack, doesn't mean I am not able to do hard work.” Rarity replied in a pissed off tone and used her magic to tie a rope around Applejack's hooves essentially hogtying her. “Now that's funny.” Rarity replied with a giggle.

“Consarn it! Untie me Rarity!” Applejack replied angrily trying to get her hooves untied but making no progress.

“Only if you let me help you.” Rarity replied with a mischievous grin.
“Fine. I didn't mean nothin by what I said anyways.” Applejack replied with a smile.

Rarity then used her magic to untie the rope from around Applejack's hooves and walked up beside her.

“Ah reckon you can start by liftin up those heavy planks over thar and putting them right here.” Applejack said getting to her hooves and pointing a hoof at the large planks laying on the ground a few feet way.

Rarity did as she was told lifting up the heavy planks with her magic and setting them neatly in a pile next to Applejack. “So, do you have any idea what might be up with Fluttershy?” Rarity asked curiously as Applejack lifted a plank up carefully and placed it against the home standing on her hind hooves as she positioned it properly.

“Ah haven't the slightest. Could y'all put a nail right here?” Applejack replied pointing a hoof at a spot on the plank at which point Rarity lifted up a single nail with her magic and positioned in in place.

Applejack then turned around,reared up an gave the nail a mighty buck wedging it into the plank. Applejack looked over at Rarity and could have swore she was staring at something but had no idea what. “I think she might be in love.” Rarity said causing Applejack to buck the nail haphazardly bending it.

“Consarn it! Could y'all remove this nail for me and put another one in it's place? What make's y'all think that?” Applejack asked curiously waiting for Rarity to remove the nail and put another one in it's place.

“Oh come now Applejack. Haven't you noticed how she's been acting the past few days? She's been humming a tune more often than I have ever seen her do so in all the time I’ve known her.” Rarity replied as she removed the nail from the plank and placed another in it's place at which point Applejack gave another mighty buck wedging the nail in the plank.

“I reckon y'all have a point thar, but who could she have fallen for?” Applejack asked as she gave another buck hammering the nail completely in this time.

“Who knows? It might be Big Macintosh, or it could be another filly.” Rarity replied with a smile as she placed another nail which Applejack bent due to the shock of her statement.

“Hayseed! Another filly? Well I reckon there's nothin wrong with that, but if it's mah big brother I may have to have a talkin with her.” Applejack replied as Rarity removed the nail and placed another one in it's place.

“What's wrong Applejack? Do you have a problem with one filly loving another?” Rarity replied in a slightly offended tone.

“Nah, I just was caught off guard is all.” Applejack replied giving a buck to the nail.

“And why would that catch you off guard?” Rarity replied still annoyed.

“Well, I always thought Fluttershy was a strait pony after all.” Applejack replied bucking the nail once again planting it firmly in the plank.

“I never said she wasn't. You're the one making assumptions Applejack.” Rarity replied her temper rising.

“Ah reckon you have a point thar. I guess I was jumpin the haystack on that one.” Applejack replied with a sheepish expression on her face now.

“I reckon you did.” Rarity replied quoting Applejack's tone of voice in her statement.

“What's it to y'all anyways? It's not like y'all is into fillies or anythin” Applejack replied.

Rarity however didn't reply to this. And simply levitated another nail for Applejack to buck.

“I was wondering...after we are done here. Do you want to possibly go out to eat? I know a fabulous restaurant that serves the most delicious daisy sandwiches.” Rarity replied in a much less confident tone.

“Sure, why not. I could use a good meal after workin on this here house.” Applejack replied with a smile.

Applejack and Rarity both continued to work on the home for several more hours until they finally finished with what they had for the day and Rarity showed Applejack to the restaurant.

“May I take your order?” A pony wearing a formal suit asked.

“So what did you want to order darling? The meal's on me.” Rarity replied with a smile batting her eyelashes at Applejack.

“Hmm... I reckon the dandelion sandwich sounds a might tasty at the moment.” Applejack replied.

“I'll take the daisy and hayseed sandwich.” Rarity replied to the waiter pony.

“This is a might kind of y'all Rarity.” Applejack said after a few moments.

“Oh it's nothing darling. After all spending time with you is reward enough.” Rarity replied with a smile.

“Uh-huh...” Applejack replied with an unsure glance at Rarity.

“Something wrong?” Rarity asked curiously.

Before Applejack could reply however the waiter had returned with their meal. “Oh wow. This looks delicious! Ah'm plum starved!” Applejack said picking up the sandwich and taking a bite.

“I'm glad you like it. I was worried that you may not like this restaurant since your a down to earth pony and used to your country style foods.” Rarity replied and took a bite out of her own sandwich.

“Ah like fancy foods as much as the next pony. Ah just don't have the bits to afford such food every cotton picken day.” Applejack replied and took another bite.
“Well, I could bring you here again sometime soon, if you want to that is.” Rarity replied with a smile.

“Ah wouldn't want to trouble you with that. After all ah have plenty of food back on the farm” Applejack replied finishing her sandwich.

“It wouldn't be any trouble at all darling. It would be a great way to get to know each other better. Like a date.” Rarity replied with a smile finishing her sandwich as well.

“A date? As in a date between two ponies who like each other and are lookin to get into a relationship date?” Applejack replied in an uneasy tone.

“Well...I suppose that's one way to put it...” Rarity said in a shy tone literally pulling a Fluttershy as she hid her face behind her hair with a blush.

“Oh.....OH! Umm...well ah reckon this is awkward. ah'm flattered, really ah am. But mah barn door don't swing that way.” Applejack replied with a blush and took note of Rarity lowering her head. “But don't you fret. We can still be friends.” Applejack said after a few moments putting a hoof on Rarity's shoulder with a smile.

“I see...well I should let you get back your work Applejack. I just remembered I have a client to attend to for a dress they ordered. Very urgent, must go.” Rarity replied quickly running leaving bits on the table and left the restaurant running off towards her home.

“Consarn it! That didn't go the way ah wanted it to at all.” Applejack replied stomping a hoof on the ground in frustration and ran out of the restaurant after her towards Rarity's house only to run into Fluttershy...literally.

“Oh, sorry about that Fluttershy. I thought y'all was checkin on Spike?” Applejack asked curiously as she got back to her hooves as well as did Fluttershy.

“Oh, I did. He's doing ever so well. But he still hasn't woken up. What's wrong with Rarity? I saw her crying as she ran past me.” Fluttershy replied looking in the direction of Rarity's home.

“Well, Rarity is sort of heartbroken at the moment.” Applejack replied with a slight blush.

“Oh my...what happened?” Fluttershy asked in a concerned tone.

“Well, she confessed her feelins for me, but mah barn door don't swing that way and ah think it hurt her feelins.” Applejack replied rubbing the back of her head with her right hoof as she said this.

“Oh dear. That's not good.” Fluttershy replied putting a hoof over her mouth now with a shocked look.

“Ya, I reckon ah'm gonna try to comfort her. Though I wonder if she'd even want to see mah face right now.

“Oh, I see. That might not be the best idea though.” Fluttershy replied looking at Applejack and back to the direction of Rarity's house.

“I reckon you might be right thar. I haven't seen Spike since y'all told me he was safe. Mind if ah come with you and see him?” Applejack asked curiously.

“Oh no. I don't mind.” Fluttershy replied with a smile, turned around and began to walk to her home with Applejack close behind her.

“If you don't mind me askin ya. You've been actin a might odd the last few days. Anythin you want to tell meh?” Applejack asked curiously as they approached Fluttershy's cottage.

“Oh, well...umm...” Fluttershy replied with a blush. Sure she had told Twilight and Rainbow Dash about her crush on Spike but Applejack was a different matter all together. She knew she could trust Applejack but actually telling her was harder than than she thought it would be.

“So who's the colt or uhh...filly you got a crush on?” Applejack replied to this with a smile catching Fluttershy off guard with a elbow to the side causing her to give a wince. “Oh, hayseed! Sorry bout that Fluttershy! I plum forgot your side hadn't fully healed yet.” Applejack said rubbing the back of her head with her rub hoof in embarrassment.

“It's okay. It doesn't hurt as much now.” Fluttershy replied avoiding the question she had asked her.

“So, y'all gonna tell meh?” Applejack asked with a coy grin.

“Neither.” Fluttershy replied simply.

“Wait, so you don't have a crush on a filly or colt? Then why have y'all be acting like your head's in the clouds the last few days?” Applejack replied with a confused look.

“Well, umm...you see...i am in....” Fluttershy replied however the last three words of this sentence were once again cut off by her voice going into an inaudible whisper.

“Consarn it, would y'all just spit it out?” Applejack replied slamming a hoof on her forehead in annoyance.

Fluttershy however didn't reply and showed her to the room where Spike was sleeping. “So what is goin on with you?” Applejack asked once again not dropping the subject.

Unknown to both ponies Spike was beginning to come to. “I'm in....” Fluttershy replied once again the last three words inaudible.

Applejack slammed her hoof on her forehead once again groaning in annoyance. “You know what? Never mind. Ah ain't in the mood to be playin twenty questions with ya when ah just upset Rarity and that's done put me in a bad mood.” Applejack replied in annoyance turning away from her slamming a hoof on the wall.

“I'm in love with Spike!” Fluttershy blurted out suddenly causing Applejack to pull a one-hundred and eighty degree turn and gawk at her.

“You're what?!” Spike blurted out sitting up suddenly only to become light headed and fall back onto his pillow causing both ponies to whirl to his direction.

“Spike! You're awake! This is great! Ah'm gonna go tell the others! Y'all wait here!” Applejack exclaimed happily running out the room and out of Fluttershy's cottage.

“You shouldn't sit up so suddenly Spike. You've been through a lot.” Fluttershy said in her natural whispering tone as she walked up beside him.

“Did I hear what I thought I heard?” Spike asked in a dazed tone as his head was still spinning from sitting up so fast.

“Umm....yes.” Fluttershy replied with a blush turning her head away with a blush.

“Wow....what a way to wake up...” Spike thought to himself then remembered that Pinkie Pie was the last one to see him getting sucked into a tornado. “Is Pinkie Pie okay? And what about the others?” Spiked asked in a worried tone.

“Don't worry. They are all fine. And they have been worried sick about you. I've been taking care of you for the past few days.” Fluttershy replied with a smile.

“How did I get all the way over here though? Last thing I remember is getting sucked into that tornado thing and then nothing.” Spike replied. His head wasn't spinning anymore but he didn't feel like sitting up either.

“Well, I was watching the tornado outside from my home and I saw you get thrown from it. I don't know what made me do it but I jumped to the sky and caught you” Fluttershy replied with a smile.

“So you saved me...” Spike replied trailing off then he recalled what he had wanted to say to her. “Listen...Fluttershy...I'm sorry.” Spike said after a few moments.

“Oh? For what?” Fluttershy replied with a smile.

“For convincing you to...you know..do it with me. I didn't even bother to think how you feel about me.” Spike said and turned his face away from her in shame.

“Oh it quite alright. And I completely understand if you don't feel the same about me...” Fluttershy replied with a smile even though Spike could tell by the sound of her voice she was hopping otherwise.

Spike turned to look at Fluttershy again and noticed her side which had a few scars that could be seen barely beneath her yellow fur coat. “What happened?” Spike asked pointing a claw at Fluttershy's side.

“Oh, that. It's nothing. It was my fault really. When I went to catch you the spines on your head sort of cut me but it wasn't that bad.” Fluttershy replied with a smile.

Even though he knew it wasn't his fault he couldn't but help to feel guilty just the same. He might have killed her when she caught him and she's passing it off as if it was nothing. Spike simply just looked at Fluttershy whom was hiding her face behind her hair once again with a smile as she looked at him.

She had done so much for him, put her life in danger for him. He would be a total prick not to at least consider her. At least that's how he felt about it anyways. “Listen...i can't really think properly right now. Would you mind giving me a few days to clear my head?” Spike said after a few moments hopping this was enough for her.

“Of course. I wouldn't want you to do anything you might regret.” Fluttershy replied with a smile however Spike could hear the disappointment in her voice.

A few moments after she said this Applejack came running in followed by the other ponies with the exception of Rarity.

“You had me worried sick about you!” Twilight exclaimed running over to the bed and gave him a tight hug.

“I'm so excited! Are you excited?! Spike's awake! I was so worried about him! I was like-” Pinkie exclaimed and made a pouty face. “When I thought you were gone for good and then I was like-” Pinkie Pie exclaimed making an ecstatic happy face. “When I found out you were okay!” Pinkie Pie exclaimed saying all of this in a very fast and hyperactive manner practically choking him as she was hugging him so hard at the moment.

“Y'all are gonna kill him if you keep huggin him like that!” Applejack exclaimed with a giggle at which point Pinkie Pie stopped hugging him tightly.

“Heh, I knew that dragon was too hard headed to kick the bucket like that.” Rainbow Dash said with a grin standing next to Twilight now.

Spike looked around to all this friends happy to see them all and sat up slowly making a serious face. “I want to say something to all of you.” Spike said making sure everypony was looking at him. “I've done things with all of you...that I shouldn't have. I used Pinkie Pie's magical book to exploit your fantasies about me....that was wrong of me. I feel terrible for playing with all your emotions like that. Can you all forgive me?” Spike said in a sincere manner looking to everypony.

Applejack and Twilight both gave shocked looks at this statement. While Fluttershy simply blushed taking a shy stance. “So, that's how y'all knew how to get to me like that?” Applejack asked in a hurt tone to which Spike nodded.

“Well that explains a lot.” Twilight remarked in an aggravated voice.

“I won't blame you all if you hate me for it. I hate myself for it.” Spike replied hanging his head in shame.

“Well, ah reckon ah'll let y'all slide this time around on account of ah knew what y'all was up to all along even though I didn't know you were usin a book.” Applejack replied after a few moments with a smile.

“I suppose I’m guilty of letting you have your way with me as well.” Twilight said speaking up a few moments after Applejack. “While I didn't know you were using the book, I didn't say no either. So I’m just as guilty as Applejack is for letting my hormones get the better of me.” Twilight said a few seconds after her first statement.

“I found out you were using the book shortly after Twilight's spell wore off so you know the story there. But if you hadn't I may have not met Twilight under the circumstances I did and well...” Rainbow Dash said trailing off with a nuzzle against Twilight's cheek.

“Wait a second! Spike used my body to get lucky with you?!” Twilight exclaimed in a shocked tone looking at Rainbow Dash then looked at Pinkie Pie. “You knew that would happen didn't you?!” Twilight exclaimed angrily looking at her now.

“I was only trying to teach Spike a lesson!” Pinkie Pie exclaimed defensively.

“Yeah, it wasn't her fault!” Spike exclaimed only to have his mouth magically zipped shut by Twilight's magic.

“I'll get to you in a moment!” Twilight exclaimed flashing him a glare.

“Unzip his mouth this instant!” Fluttershy's voice erupted very loudly out of no where making every pony stop what they were doing and stare at her.

Fluttershy was breathing very heavily at the moment looking very similar to how she looked at the grand galloping gala when she burst through the door.

“Whoa nelly, calm down thar sugar cube. She only zipped his mouth shut.” Applejack said apprehensively.

Twilight however unzipped Spike's mouth the instant she saw Fluttershy's face. If there was one thing Twilight knew about Fluttershy from the time she knew her. It was this: DO NOT PISS HER OFF.

“How dare you treat Spike this way?! He just recovered from being thrown out of a tornado for Celestia's sake, and all you can do is abuse him by zipping his mouth shut?!” Fluttershy exclaimed in a pissed off tone not shouting like she was before but very fiercely similar to how she confronted the dragon many months ago even giving Twilight “The stare”.

“He used by body to get lucky with Rainbow Dash!” Twilight retorted defensively feeling her temper rise.

“And he's sorry for doing so! Can't you see he feels ever so terrible for doing that?!” Fluttershy replied to this walking towards her.

Rainbow Dash slammed her hoof on her forehead in annoyance at this. “Would you two cut it out?! Frankly I’m glad spike did that he did!” Rainbow Dash exclaimed making Twilight jolt her head in her direction as well as Fluttershy.

“You're glad he used my body to get lucky with you?” Twilight replied in a semi-shocked manner.

“If he hadn't then I wouldn't have been out in that storm trying to kill myself and you save me. Have you seen my cloud home? It's gone! The tornado tore it to pieces. If spike and Pinkie Pie hadn't done what they had I would have most likely been killed and never told you how I really feel.” Rainbow Dash replied with a smile placing a hoof on her cheek and gave her a affectionate lick on the other.

“You and Twilight are a couple now?” Spike asked in a shocked tone however he earned a glare from both fillies making him cower slightly.
Twilight then turned to look at Rainbow Dash then back Spike then back to Rainbow Dash and finally let out a sigh. “Fine...I'll forgive him.” Twilight said after a few moments in a flat tone. “But only because his actions helped me find my true love.” Twilight said following up her last statement and kissed Rainbow Dash passionately.

“Yay! Everything went according to plan!” Pinkie Pie exclaimed with a smile.

“Wait...you planned this from the start?!” Rainbow Dash asked in a shocked tone.

“Opsie...did I say that out loud?” Pinkie Pie replied with a slight blush.

“I knew it!” Spike exclaimed at this statement.

“Well, I know everypony in Ponyville thanks to that book.” Pinkie Pie said looking at Spike with a prideful smile.

“Did y'all plan on Rarity to try and hook up with meh and meh turn her down?” Applejack asked curiously.

“Wait, your not into fillies?” Pinkie Pie asked in a shocked tone.

“Nah, my barn door don't swing that way.” Applejack replied scratching the back of her head with her right hoof.

“But the book said....” Pinkie Pie replied trailing off looking confused.

“Pinkie...I think that book has one major flaw.” Twilight chimed in at this.

“What's that?” Pinkie Pie replied with a confused expression.

“The Book can only tell you the thoughts and fantasies from the pony at that time. But a pony's fantasies and thoughts can change in a moment. So your book isn't exactly accurate.” Twilight replied in a matter-of-fact tone.

“Ah reckon that would be the case. Rarity is in her house right now crying her eyes out because ah turned her down.” Applejack said after a few moments.

“Rarity is lesbian?!” Spike exclaimed in a horror struck tone.

“Well that's a shock. Considering how much she flirts with the colts around town I would have put my bits on her being strait.” Twilight remarked with a giggle.

“That explains a lot...” Spike said in an annoyed tone laying his chin in his right claw with an annoyed expression on his face realizing that Rarity wasn't here along with every pony else.

“Ah wouldn't go as far to say she's lesbian. Ah'd take a gander at thinking she's into both genders.” Applejack replied to this after a few moments.

“Should we try to go and get her?” Twilight asked curiously.

“I think we should send Spike to go get her.” Pinkie Pie replied to this much to everypony's shock.

Spike gave a piercing glance at Pinkie Pie as if he was trying to read her mind.” What's that crazy filly up to now? She knows I have a crush on Rarity and have always wanted to get lucky with her. Does she know how Fluttershy feels about me? Is this another one of her crazy tests?” Spike thought to himself.

“I don't know if that's such a good idea...” Fluttershy spoke up at this in her naturally quite tone apparently having calmed down by now.

“Actually, Ah reckon that would be a great idea. What better way to cheer her up than to send Spike himself in to show her that he's alright.” Applejack said with a smile.

“I'm with Applejack on this one. Seeing Spike would cheer her up in no time.” Rainbow Dash chimed in with a smile.

“Well, if Rainbow thinks it's a good idea who am I to argue? Should we all go or just him?” Twilight asked curiously.

“I'll go with him. Think about the last time we all tried to get her to come out? We had to put her cat in a tree! If it's just me and spike I’m sure it will go over much better!” Pinkie Pie exclaimed with a smile.

“But Spike's only just recovered from a week long coma. He needs his rest!” Fluttershy exclaimed in a worried tone.

“I can stand on my own two feet Fluttershy. I'll be fine.” Spike said with a smile getting off his bed only to stumble slightly but keep his balance.

Spike and Pinkie Pie left Fluttershy's cottage about ten minuets later after Fluttershy examined him once more to make sure he was fit to be walking anywhere.

“What's the catch?” Spike asked giving Pinkie Pie a suspicious glance.

“What catch? Are we going to play baseball?” Pinkie Pie asked with a wide smile as they passed the a few more homes and down the street towards carousel boutique.

“Stop acting like you don't know what I’m talking about. You know I have a serious crush on Rarity.” Spike replied in an aggravated tone.

“Oh you silly dragon. I'm not planning anything. But I think you might need my book. For figuring out how to cheer her up of course.” Pinkie Pie said with a smile.

“No, I don't think i'll need it.” Spike replied still trying to figure out what her plan with this was as they stopped at the door to Rarity's shop.

“Well we're here. Good luck!” Pinkie Pie said with a smile.

“Wait, your not going in with me?” Spike replied in a shocked tone.

“Nope! I figured you'd know how to handle this on your own.” Pinkie Pie replied with a smile opening the door for him.

Spike took a deep breath and walked in allowing Pinkie Pie to close it behind him. The faint sound of Rarity crying could be heard in a distance upstairs. About a week ago Spike would have been jumping for joy with Pinkie Pie's book in claw preparing to find some way to get lucky with the pony of his dreams but for some reason something felt off about this. He couldn't put a claw on it. But something felt different now.

Feeling off or not Spike pressed forward going up the stairs and to Rarity's bedroom door knocking on it. “Leave me alone!” Rarity's sobbing voice called out from in her room.

“Rarity...it's me Spike.” Spike called back at which point the sobbing suddenly stopped, a cluttering sound could be heard, and the door swung open a few moments later revealing a very puffy-eyed but smiling Rarity.

“Oh, I’m so happy your okay! Please come in.” Rarity said between sniffles leaving the door open for him.

Spike couldn't help but stare at Rarity's rump as she walked away and found himself trying to get a look under her tail for a few moments before she shook his head in annoyance then cursed himself subconsciously for abandoning a chance to get a look at her goods. Spike couldn't figure it out for the life of him why he was having such a problem with this. He had sneaked looks at Rarity's pussy many of times over the course of time he's known her but now...it felt just wrong to do so but for reasons even he himself couldn't figure out why he felt it was wrong to do so.

Rarity sat on her bed and motioned for him to sit beside her on the bed which he did without hesitation.”I'm sorry that you had to see me this way. I really am happy to see you awake and well though.” Rarity said after a few moments wiping her nose with a tissue on her night table.

“I heard about what happened with you and Applejack.” Spike replied to this hoping to break the ice and try to cheer her up.

Rarity blinked a few times before blushing furiously. “I see...well I suppose you know why I am in the sorry state I am then. It's my own fault of course. I read into things far too much. After that failure with Prince Blueblood I had nearly giving up on finding a decent colt completely so I turned to and went to the other side of the fence so-to-speak. But you see how that turned out.” Rarity replied with a wearily half smile.

“There are plenty of other colts and fillies out there for you to meet. You'll find someone special one day.” Spike replied with a smile meanwhile thinking to himself” What the heck is wrong with you Spike?! Make a move!” however his body seemed to be ignoring his mind at this point or at least he thought it was his body.
