Pony’s From the Civil War

It was at the battle of Gettysburg shots were being fired from all sides screams and roaring cannon fire could be heard for miles but among this we see Private Jackson Hensley of the Confederate States of America running for cover among all this chaos. He had just turned 18 when he joined the army and just finished training and he was already in for the fight of his life. Jackson thinks “SHIT SHIT SHIT WHERE IS THE REST OF MY COMPANY”. He was running full speed at a stone wall hoping to take cover behind it and already he had lost sight of his company that was just beside him a second ago. He could not help thinking “had they all died already, if they could not make it what hope did he”. Just as he thought this a cannon ball exploded right in front of him launching him 5 feet backwards.
He lands on his back and thinks “I’m Done”. Just as he was about to give up two faces smeared with mud and blood come drag him over to the wall for cover. Although he could not see them clearly he knew immediately who they were and thanked god they were ok. The first of the two was Colonel George Smith who was battle tested and you could the way he held himself on the battlefield like nothing affected him. He was a tall and on the sporty side.
On his other side was Private Nathan Richards a skinny boy about a year younger than him that Jackson joined the army with. He was a small nerdy kid who always had glasses that looked to be skewer on his face. Though he was a skinny kid when he was just plain scary when he got in battle it was like he was a completely different person. Jackson could remember the shy little kid that was his friend sense they were little always shy and never saying more than a few words if he did not know you. That was not the kid he saw now he saw a creepy smile on his face and had a crazy look in his eyes.
George looks down at Jackson and yells over the shots “GET YOUR ASS UP AND MOVE JACKSON!!!”, and started dragging Jackson over to the wall while Nathan started firing into the ranks of Yankees yelling “YOU WILL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!!!" Jackson thought "I have never seen a man reload and fire that quickly before." Nathan was going fast as lightning even going as far as to take rifles of the dead body's and fire down range. All the while yelling like a banshee scaring the hell out of the union troops. they started running from him screaming the southern devil is after us run for your lives. and he started chasing them the only reason he stopped was because George held him back.
they made it to the stone wall and took cover behind it. They were told to hold their positions here at all costs because General Lee was planning to have a huge offensive attack from here tomorrow. Jackson did not see a way out of this they were too close to the Yankee lines they would be overwhelmed soon if something did not happen fast. Just as he thought this he heard cannon fire and quickly thought “for the love of god not again” he heard explosions and braced for impact but nothing came.
He decided to take a peek over the wall and saw the cannons were firing on the Yankee troops and were forcing them back they were saved! Yet as he thought this his hat was shot off by a stray bullet and he decided not to do that again. He finally had time to see what was going on around him and the first thing he noticed was how few of them there was. He turns to George who was keeping watch over the wall in case the Yankee army decided to come back again. “What happened to everyone we charged with around a hundred men and now there’s barely twenty five here?”
George turned to him with a sad smile saying “This is everyone or at least everyone that made it.” Jackson could not believe it these were men he shared meals, jokes, and stories with and now they're just gone all they left on this world are there bloody bodies.
Nathan saw his friend and came over and put a hand on his shoulder and said “it will be alright at least we are still alive.” Jackson stared back at his friend and started to get angry saying “Yes we are alive but these men were our brothers in arms, what am I supposed to say to their children when they ask me where is there daddy?! They had lives too but I guess it’s all ok just because we're alive!”
Nathan looked down and said “No it’s not alright but we can’t dwell on it now there is nothing we can do but make sure they did not die in vain.”
The conversation died off into silence and stayed that way until it started to get dark. Jackson saw this and said “you two get some sleep I will wake yall if something happens.” George put a hand on his shoulder and said “No I will do it I wasn't the one who got hit by a cannon ball today.” Jackson did not have the energy to argue so he decided to see if he could sleep and it wasn't long before he was out like a light.
He woke up and was surprised to see a lot more people along the wall than were there before. George saw this and said “ya they snuck up in the night to get ready for the attack this morning, better get ready the battle will start in about half an hour”.
Nathan woke up shortly after this and they all ate their breakfast in silence knowing what could easily happen to any of them in the next few minutes. They were all counting down the time until it was time to charge down the position and hopefully break the union line and force them back. Suddenly it was time and you could tell by the signature rebel yell as all the men charged at the union line ready to give them hell for what they have done to their brothers in arms. Jackson was right along with them charging up to the union line. He looked to his left and saw George with his steel gaze charging right beside him and to his right Nathan with the crazy look in his eyes and a funny smile on his face.
He thought “as long as these two are by my side everything will be ok.” His thoughts were suddenly halted when the union line sent their first volley of bullets at them mowing down about half of their men. He saw this and started to panic thinking “this can’t be right the union line was supposed to be weak here there weren’t supposed to be that many men.” Then with the sounds of cannons men started exploding along with the ground under their feet, but Jackson, George, and Nathan kept charging and made it to the union line but right in front of them was a cannon. It fired right at them and Jackson thought “this is how we die.” And with a boom of the cannon smoke covered where they once were but they
had disappeared.
Jackson, Nathan, and George were thrown backwards. Jackson looked at his two friends they were both bloody and unconscious and he guessed he did not look much better as he slowly faded into the black he heard a voice with a southern accent. “My word what happened to y'all and where did y'all come from?”
All Jackson could say before he fell unconscious was “please help”. Applejack looked at the weird creatures and yelled for Big Mac.

The Hospital
Chapter Three The Hospital
Jackson was just gaining consciousness and the first thing he noticed was that he was floating. Obviously he did what his instincts told him and that was to freak the hell out but quickly stopped when he heard Twilight say, “If you keep struggling like that I’m going to drop you again and none of us want that”. Jackson decides to take Twilight’s advice and calms down and decides to look around and try to figure out what’s going on. Behind him he sees his gear along with his friend’s gear in a wagon getting pulled by the red one named Big Mac. He looks in front of him and sees George and Nathan being floated along by a golden glow that was coming from Celestia’s horn.
They travel along in silence until it is broken by Twilight because she can not hold her curiosity any more. “If you don’t mind me asking where are all of you from you seem to talk like applejack but she says she has never seen anything like you?”, Jackson decides he has nothing better to do than answer her questions and it might help pass the time.
We come from the southern part of what used to be the United States until the war now its commonly known as Dixie but the official name is Confederate States of America”. Twilight was shocked silent and so were the rest of them Jackson was puzzled and looked around at all of them wondering what he said wrong the only one of them that did not seem to be effected was Celestia. Jackson finally asks, “What did I say wrong?”
Twilight responds with, “Nothing we just haven't had a war here in over a thousand years and here you come saying there has been one recently”.
Jackson responds ,“It’s still going on before we got here we were on the battlefield at Gettysburg and a cannon fired at us and now we're here”.
Twilight looks him with a shocked expression, “You’re soldiers!? Well I guess that explains the sharp sticks you were carrying around with you”.
“Sharp stick?” Jackson thought then said, “Oh you mean my rifle”.
“What's a rifle and what does it do?”, asks Twilight
Jackson responded, “Well it’s a basically a miniature cannon but it would be better if I showed you”. Celestia gave a nod of approval and Applejack went to get his rifle that they thought was just a pointy stick.
Applejack gave Jackson his rifle and Jackson went on to check that it was safe to fire and it was hard to do with his broken arm but he managed. He asked Twilight to put him down and she complied. He took aim at a tree and fired, there was a bang that startled all the ponies. When the smoke cleared, there was a decent sized hole in the tree. Everypony looked on in shock. Even Celestia looked disturbed by this though she did not say anything.
Applejack was the first to recover from her shock and turned from looking at the hole in the tree to Jackson and said “This is what y'all fight with how do any of y'all survive when these things are being pointed at y'all?”
Jackson looked down in shame and said with a tear in his eye, “Many of us don't, we die by the thousands, me and my friends we are lucky we are alive when our fellow soldiers died right before our eyes.” Applejack seemed to realize she touched on a hard subject for the weird creature and quickly went quite.
Celestia said, “Maybe we should continue this conversation later once they are fully healed.” Everyone agreed and the trip to the hospital was continued in silence. Once they reached the hospital Jackson was not sure if he trusted a pony to his well being. No matter if its a pony or not but decided he didn't have any other choice so he let the doctor heal him and his friends.
Jackson absolutely refused when he was offered a room of his own, even though the staff said it would be more comfortable for him. He was not going to abandon his two friends to wake up in a room with no explanation. He was there for two days before his friends woke up but the whole time the ponies came and left to check up on them but Applejack stayed with them. He asked her why she did this and she responded with “I found y'all and now I’m going to make sure y'all get better”.
Jackson was still curious about Applejack’s southern accent seeing as she has never been in the south a day in her life. She said that she always talked like this and she picked it up from her parents and the rest of the Apple family. He asked about her parents but quickly realized it was a sore subject for her and stopped asking. Finally his friends woke up and he had to explain all that had happened to them Nathan seemed to take it in stride and seemed just fascinated by the fact there were talking ponies. George on the other hand had a panic attack when one of the doctors spoke to him and had to be calmed down by Jackson.
George finally came to terms with the talking ponies but was still nervous around them and kept muttering, “This ain't natural.”
Finally the day came the day that they could be released from the hospital and Celestia came to speak to them. She greeted them all by name and was about to start questioning them when you heard a yell, “WAIT!!!!!”. With that Twilight came skidding into the room with papers all over the place and quill and ink hovering in front of her. Twilight with a sigh of relief said, “Good you have not started yet just give me a second to get ready so I can take notes.” George and Nathan stared at Jackson with questioning looks and Jackson just shrugged.
Celestia looked over to her student as she finally got all of her things under control. Twilight waited patiently for them to start. Finally Celestia turned her head back towards the three new creatures and said, “My first question is what type of animal are you?”
Jackson was about to respond when George answered before he could, “We’re humans what else would we be?” He said like it was something obvious.
Celestia responded, “I do not know what a human is so please explain it to me.”
Jackson thought, “Oh boy this is going to take a while”. And it did take a while it took two hours just to answer that one question Nathan and George helping fill in some of the details that Jackson forgot to mention. The whole time this was going on Twilight was filling page after page with notes Jackson had never seen someone write so fast in his entire life.
Celestia asked several questions varying from what were yankees to where they had grown up. Obviously Celestia did not get to ask all the questions she wanted to because when she looked out a window she said she had to leave and she would entrust the questioning to her student Twilight Sparkle and expected a report on what she had learned about them. Twilight was overjoyed by this because in her words, “You don't get the chance to study a new species every day.” Celestia told Twilight she could do it later because it was starting to get late and they all needed their rest.
Jackson stopped Celestia as she turned to leave and asked, “Where do we go now we really don't have anywhere to spend the night?”
Celestia pondered this as George spoke up, “Don't worry about it I have a tent we can share in my pack”.
Applejack spoke up before Celestia could, “Nonsense y'all can stay with me at the farm. I found y'all I might as well take care of y'all”.
Celestia turned towards Applejack and said, “You don’t need to do this I’m sure we could figure out something else.”
Applejack responded “isn't problem I insist.”
Celestia said, “Well since you insist thank you for looking out for our new guests.” Celestia turned to leave but saw Twilight with a sad look on her face and Celestia asked, “What's wrong Twilight”.
Twilight said, “I thought at least one of them would be staying with me in the library so I could study there sleeping habits”. Jackson, Nathan, and George looked at each other with worried expressions at what the unicorn had just said.
Celestia said to her student, “They are to be treated with respect and not a science experiment Twilight I do not think they would appreciate being watched while they sleep.”
“Yes Princess Celestia”, Twilight responded with her face downcast. Which made all three humans give relieved sighs.
“Now I must go and I suggest you all do the same before it gets too dark”, Celestia said as she left the room and went to her carriage to leave.
Twilight to Applejack and said, “I should leave I have to go and organize all my notes and get more paper and ink so I can take more”.
“Ok Twi see you tomorrow”, responded Applejack. She turned to the three humans and said, “Follow me we're heading down to the farm. I’ll introduce you to the rest of the family.” Jackson, George, and Nathan followed Applejack out a hospital and down the road to Sweet Apple Acres. “Y'all are gonna like it here we have enough room for y'all and everything but I hope y'all don't mind apple for dinner”, said Applejack as they continued down the road.
The Apple Farm
Applejack, Jackson, Nathan, and George were just in front of Sweet Apple Acres when Big Mac, Granny Smith, and Apple Bloom come out the house to greet them. Apple Bloom was hiding behind Big Mac as they came up to the house staring at the humans with a curious expression. Applejack asked Big Mac, “Has the farm been doing ok since I left to check on these fellas?” Big Mac responded with, “Eyep”.
“Well thats good to hear now how about you and Granny smith come over and greet our guests?” Applejack said to Apple Bloom. Jackson sees Nathan and George turn to look at the two new ponies one was an old green pony with a gray main and the other was a young yellow filly with a red mane.
Before Jackson could react Nathan yelled “OH MY GOD YOU ARE ADORABLE!!!” and started running towards Apple Bloom. Apple Bloom looked terrified and tried to run away but Nathan caught up to her grabbing the pony and started petting it like it was a little dog.
Everyone else just stared in shock until George got yelled at him, “What are you doing Nathen you are a man in the army you do not act this way!”.
To which Nathan replied, “BUT IT'S SOO FLUFFY!!!”
“That is not an excuse”, George said as he started to move forward to get Nathan to stop petting the little filly that was now starting to enjoy being petted.
But Applejack stopped him saying, “It's alright she is enjoying it but the one your friend is petting is Apple Bloom and the other is Granny Smith” Jackson greeted them both as did George while Nathan was still engrossed in petting the little filly. “Y’all want to follow me so we can go get y’all set up for the night”, said Applejack. Jackson and his friends followed Applejack into the house and up the stairs.
George turned to Nathan and said, “Let me see that” and took Apple Bloom from him. He immediately turned back to Nathan, “Dude you're right she is fluffy”
Nathan responded, “I know right and she's so freaking adorable”. Apple Bloom blushed at this while Jackson and Applejack just rolled their eyes. They continued into the room which was a decent sized room with four beds and a window looking over the apple orchard in it.
Applejack said, “This room is used as a guest bedroom when our extended family come to visit and y'all came at a good time tomorrow is the apple family reunion and you will get to meet all of the apple family there that is if y’all want to come.”
“We would love to go”, replied Jackson before any of of his friends could say otherwise.
“Thats good to hear”, said Applejack, “Now if you wouldn’t mind putting Apple Bloom down she needs to get some sleep its a big day tomorrow and we still have things to get ready for tomorrow”.
“We could help you set everything up if you want”, replied Jackson as George and Nathan regretfully put Apple Bloom down and she scampered off to her room.
Applejack said, “Y’all don’t have to do that”.
Jackson said, “No I insist after what you're doing for us it is the least we could do.” Both Nathan and George shook there heads in agreement.
“Well since y’all insist I’ll wake y’all up early in the morning so we can get breakfast before we start on the preparations”, Replied Applejack as she turned to go out the room but before she left she turned around and said, “If y’all need anything I am just down the hall in the room to the left”.
Jackson replied, “Thank you we will let you know if we need anything”. As he watched Applejack walk out of the room and turned back to his two companions. Each one of his friends had selected a bed as there own and had put their packs on the spare bed but before they went to bed Jackson spoke up, “I think one of us should stand guard while the other two sleep and we will switch off in shifts because I really don’t trust that Twilight not to try and sneak in here and try some experiments on us.”
Both of his friends nodded in agreement and Jackson took the first shift while the other two slept. He stood guard for about three hours before his shift was over and he woke up Nathan for his shift as the guard and Jackson quickly dozed off. He woke up next morning from hearing Applejack call from down stairs saying breakfast was ready. He opened his eyes and had the scare of his life. Right above him staring right into his eyes was Twilight with a quill and paper levitating right beside her and it was writing things down.
Jackson did what any rational man would do in his situation he screamed which caused twilight to scream which caused George and Nathan to wake up and start screaming. Applejack ran into the room and asked, “What are y’all yelling about?”.
Nathan screamed, “I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!!!”, causing the rest of the room to fall silent.
Applejack turned to look at Twilight and asked, “What are you doing in here and how did you even get in here ?” All of them turned to look at twilight who was still right in front of Jackson.
She looked down a little ashamed and said, “I kind of teleported in so I could study them”.
“Wait how did you even manage to get in here without us knowing we had a guard posted all night?”, asked Jackson.
Twilight lowered her head further and said, “I used a sleeping spell on George when he was standing guard.”
George, Nathan, and Jackson all stared in shock and they all said in unison, “You can do that?”
Twilight just nodded her head while Applejack looked at her and said, “You know you shouldn’t do that Twi you need to respect their space you wouldn’t want ponies doing that to you”.
Twilight said, “I guess you're right but can I still come to watch them on how they react around a big group of ponies?”
“Thats up to them”, responded Applejack. Twilight turned to the three humans and with big puppy dog eyes begged them to let her observe.
Jackson sighs and says, “I guess you can but no more knocking us out and standing over us there are just some things you don’t do.”
Twilight brightened up at this and said, “Thank you, thank you, thank you, you won't regret this.” Jackson was having second thoughts about his choice but decided to keep his thoughts to himself as Applejack leads them down stairs and into the dining room where Apple Bloom, Big Mac, and Granny Smith are already sitting and eating their breakfast.
when all of them walk down the stairs Apple Bloom looks up and said, “Hey Twilight I didn’t know you would be here mind me asking why you’re here?”
Twilight responded, “I'm here to study the humans for Princess Celestia and now is the perfect time to observe their eating habits”.
“Thats right what do y’all normally eat and I will see if we have any”, said Applejack. Twilight quickly brought out a quill, paper, and ink and prepared to write down everything they said.
Jackson thought for a second and said, “Normally for breakfast we eat things like Bacon, Biscuits with jam, and grits”.
Twilight quickly wrote all of this down but stopped and asked “what's Bacon?”
Nathan with a horror look on his face said “Bacon is the best thing that’s ever been invented it’s pig fried over a fire and it’s basically meat candy”.
All of the ponies with shocked expressions looked at the humans which they met with with questioning glances. Apple Bloom was the the first to recover and yelled “Y’all eat meat!?!”.
Jackson responded with, “Yes is there somthing wrong with that?”.
Applejack responded “No not exactly we just ponies don’t eat meat”, as Twilight was quickly writing all of this down. Applejack continued, “We don’t have any bacon but we do have apple jam and biscuits will those do?”.
Jackson responded, “Yeah that will do. We're omnivores so we eat both meat and plants.” Applejack gave a relieved sigh and went to fetch the food they had asked for.
When she came back she said, “Here y’all go you can eat while we're on our way to set things up” They continued out the door to set things up for the reunion.
Back on Earth
“Mr. Lincoln we have a report to give you on some strange happenings that have taken place at Gettysburg”, said one of the presidents secretaries.
Lincoln said, “Hand it here and let me look it over.” He took the paper and started looking it over and said “This is interesting men disappearing when they are supposed to die and leaving a magical residue”. He turns to his secretary and says, “Leave me I must consult this with our expert”. His secretary simply bowed and backed out of the room.
Lincoln turned to a black figure that had just appeared and said, “Now what do you think of this King Sombra?”
Back in Equestria
“Well it took a while but we finally got it finished”, said Applejack as she looked over all the preparations they managed to get done in the past few hours. Jackson was admiring the work they had done from setting up the apple fritter tables to the sewing circle as the first of the apple family started to arrive. There were so many of them that Jackson couldn’t hope to count them. They each started at the humans in wonder and asked them questions on where they came from and they answered their questions as best they could.
The Apple family accepts them like one of their own even letting them do the six legged race or the three legged race in their case and they all had a grand time. pretty soon it was time to eat and all but one of the tables had a tablecloth on it and was set for eating and Applejack asked Apple Bloom to find one to put on it so everything can be ready. Apple Bloom is looking around for one and simply cannot find one until she sees a cloth hanging out from one of the humans packs she grabs it and it turns out to be just big enough for the table. Apple bloom thinks, “This sure is a fancy table cloth with the X and stars on it and all I hope Jackson don't mind me using it”.
Jackson was enjoying the time he was having chatting with all the different ponies and soon Applejack rings the dinner bell and says, “It’s time to eat y'all”. Nathan, Jackson, and George head towards the dining area that they had set up earlier that day but their hearts stop when they see Apple Bloom laying there country's flag on a table like it was a simple table cloth.
Before Jackson even realizes what he is doing he starts running at Apple Bloom screaming, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!” Apple Bloom turns around and sees Jackson running at her looking raging mad followed quickly by Nathan and George both equally looking equally mad. Apple Bloom is shaking in fear when they reach her and Applejack runs over to see what the yelling is about. Jackson when he reaches Apple Bloom “I ASKED WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!”
“I was just putting the tablecloth on the table” Apple Bloom squeaked trying her best to be as small as possible while looking up with big worried eyes.
Applejack just reaches the table and asks, “What's going on?”
Jackson through clenched teeth says, “She just put my nations flag down like a simple tablecloth”, and continues to yell “DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY OF MY BROTHERS I WATCHED DIE FOR THIS FLAG!?! DO YOU!?! I SHARED THEIR DYING MOMENTS WITH THEM AND YOU JUST USE IT AS A TABLECLOTH!!”
Everypony is staring at them now and all Apple Bloom can squeak is, “I didn’t know” Jackson is taken aback by this when he saw it happen he had forgotten nopony knew what the flag ment and quickly became ashamed of how he reacted.
Jackson kneeled down in front of Apple Bloom and said in a soft voice, “I'm sorry I yelled at you I forgot no one knew about it”
Apple Bloom stops trembling when she sees the look in Jacksons eyes seeing that he is truely sorry for yelling at her she quickly goes over to the table grabs the flag and hands it back to Jackson saying, “I’m sorry for what I did I should've asked first.”
“It’s not your fault Apple Bloom you didn't know just ask us before you take something out of our packs again it could be dangerous”. Apple Bloom nods her head and Applejack with a relieved smile on her face walks over.
“So thats the flag that represents the country you come from”, Applejack says as she studies the flag. “What do the stars stand for?”, she asks.
Jackson responds, “Each star represents a state that turned against the union and became part of the C.S.A. The states are South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Virginia, and Arkansas.”
Applejack takes the flag and heads towards the barn causing Jackson to ask, “What are you doing with it?” in a half panicked voice.
Applejack says, “Relax if this flag is that important to you it might as well be put up and I think theres an old flagpole in the barn that we can use to put it up.”
Jackson smiles and says, “Thanks Applejack it means alot”.
“Not a problem sugar cube”, responds Applejack. She continues to the barn and comes out with a small flagpole that she continues to put the flag on and raise it. Jackson, Nathan, and George salute the flag as it goes up. after it is done they continue to make sure everypony has food before they start eating and Jackson, Nathan, and George end up sitting with Apple Bloom, Twilight, and Applejack.
They are allowed to start eating now that everyone is served but just as Twilight was about to start eating they notice the three humans have the heads down cast their hands together and they were speaking in low tones. Twilight tries to ask them what they are doing but they keep ignoring her. Twilight nudges Applejack and asks, “What are they doing?”
Applejack responds, “I don’t rightly know but that is some strange behavior there”.
They continued to stare until the humans straightened up and looked at them and asked, “What?”
Applejack says, “Me and Twilight was just wondering what were y’all doing?”
“What we were just praying?”, says Jackson
“What's praying?”, Twilight asked enthusiastically.
“It’s where we talk to God and give thanks for what he has done for us, for asking for forgiveness of our sins and asking for a blessing on the food.”, Jackson said simply.
“You have a whole religion how exciting I have so many questions for you”, Twilight squealed.
“It would take longer to explain it than the time we have now but I could lend you the Bible in my pack it's what our religion is based around just treat it with the upmost respect I can't tell you how much it means to me.”
“Don’t worry I will treat it with the utmost respect like it was from the Canterlot Library”, Twilight said. Over dinner they discussed many topics but the main thing was Twilight getting Jackson to agree to teach her about the religion she found out was called Christianity. Eventually the reunion ran down and it started to get late so the family members started to say their goodbyes and heading back to wherever they came from. Jackson, George, and Nathan were about to turn in for the night after helping clean up all the things from that days events before it struck him and he ran back to Twilight and said, “You aren't going to watch us sleep again are you?”
“No not at all I respect your privacy but I will be checking up on you tomorrow”. Jackson accepted this answer and went back over to George and Nathan.
Nathan said, “You don’t trust her answer do you?”
Jackson responded, “Nope”.
George said, “Guard duty again tonight?”
