Choices and Responsiblilties
Chapter One: Rainbow Dash's Proposal
Load Full StoryNext ChapterMy name is Solar Flight, a Pegasus pony living in ponyville, who is at the moment currently wondering what to do with his life. I enjoyed doing new things, but I could never find that one thing that enjoyed more then any thing else. Not even my cutie mark could tell me what I was destined to do or be. If there's a Cutie mark for being indifferent about your life than surely it must be mine. So what I would usually do is just help different ponies with their problems, and since I wasn't good at one thing I decided to try my hand at other things, whether it was helping out twilight out in the library, Fluttershy with her animals, Rainbow Dash with her flying, Rarity with her fashion designing, or Applejack with her applebucking, I would do it.
However some of the stuff I did, I did more times then others, such as helping Applejack with her family farm or Rainbow Dash with her flying. Probably because those two required physical work and I enjoyed being active. Sitting around in a library or working with clothes surely wasn't something I liked to do, and often avoided the jobs if I was given the chance, but if the job paid well I would do it, whether if I wanted to or not.
Another reason behind this was because I was infatuated with the both of them. Applejack, because we were close childhood friends who’s family took me in when my family died in a fire and Rainbow Dash, because she was one of the only friends I had in flight school. I couldn't help but run to their aid whenever they wanted me to help them with anything. If I wasn't working, you could usually find me sleeping on a cloud or just wandering around. To tell you the truth I never really had many friends. It's not because I'm not nice or anything it's just because I choose not have them. I'm the type of pony that has a lot of acquaintances, and very few friends. I guess you can say I'm kind of shy when talking to new ponies and since most of the ponies I meet are just ponies who hired me for a job they need doing, I usually don't stick around if I don't need too.
Right now, I was with Rainbow Dash. I had just gotten back from losing to her in a three lap race around ponyville. To the ponies that watched the race saw that she only one by a razor thin margin. I think she intentionally held back in order to make the race seem more interesting than it was going to be. I think I've seen Rainbow at her fastest and I'm pretty sure that my top speed was no way near hers. I know for a fact that our daily practice routine was pushing me to my limits which was good. She was getting better, speed was her game, not mine. When we had finished our daily run I would often be short of breath. She was aways pushing herself to do more, and I admired that about her but I could no longer keep up with her, maybe it was because I was slacking off when we were training or I really had reached my limit. I'm fast I'll admit that but Rainbow Dash could fly circles around me, but no matter how many times I tell her she just thinks I'm just not training hard enough, I don't know how long she's been thinking about it but today she had suggested that I should consider joining the Wonderbolts with her.
The Wonderbolts are a famous squad of Pegasus ponies who perform aerial acrobatics, participate in sporting events, and have some military duties as well. Being one of her best friends and her training buddy I often hear about how much she idolizes and wants to join them.
I never really thought about joining them until now. To tell you the truth like what heard about my father, I inherited his fear of responsibility. I could do small things but when it came to the larger things in life I would always crack. Most of my decisions are influenced by the opinions of others. Rainbow Dash really thought that the both of us would be able to become Wonderbolts in no time. Originally I didn't want to do it but due to Rainbow Dash’s constant begging and this probably being the biggest chance that I'd probably ever have to get closer to her, I eventually cracked and agreed to try out for Wonderbolt Academy.
“Great job out there Solar, you were on fire. If you keep pushing yourself like that you'll be as fast as me in no time.” Rainbow Dash said barely panting after our little race. The ponies around us began to clap showing that they enjoyed the the little show, some even began to w
“Thanks...I've been training with you for years now, so it’s only natural that I’d be showing some improvement. You were pretty good today yourself. If you keep it up I bet you’ll be able to join the Wonderbolts in no time.” I said giving her a smile showing that I was being sincere about what I said. I sighed deeply as I felt my heart rate slowly decrease. I slowly pulled myself up to my feet and shook the light-headed feeling away.
“Oh yeah…since we’re on the topic. Have you thought about joining the Wonderbolts with me?” She said trying to ease the topic in. I sighed, knowing that I shouldn't have bring up the subject. I looked at her and put on a strained smile.
“Uhh…no, I haven’t.” I said almost fearing the wrath of Rainbow.
“Come On! I gave you a week. How long do you need to think about it?” She yelled as anger and frustration began to overcome her.
“Calm down. I don’t think everypony around us needs to hear our conversation.” I said in hush tone as the ponies around us began wonder what was wrong.
“Who cares about that?! Come on, why do you keep stalling? Do you want to join the wonderbolts with me or not? It's a simple yes or no question.” She asked wanting an answer now.
“I don’t think I can make a life changing decision so easily Rainbow Dash. I need time to think about this.” I said trying to talk her into giving me a few more days.
“How long do you need? It’s been an entire month and the last day to send a acceptance letter is in two days!” Shit. It’s been that long? I had totally forgotten. I sighed and asked her to give me until tomorrow to decide. I promised her that I was going to have her answer by tomorrow. “You said that the last two times. You’d better have an answer or I’m going to be pissed.” She said angrily as she took flight and flew to her house up in the clouds.
Watching as she disappeared a sighed again and shook my head.
Too most of you out there you probably don’t see the big deal of joining the Wonderbolts with a hot mare like Rainbow Dash but if had this problem you’d probably take it a little more serious.
Since I wasn’t doing anything else I decided to just go home. I actually lived and worked on Sweet Apple Acres. Applejacks family had taken me in and had raised me as if I was one of their own. They’re a good, honest and dependable family that anyone in their right mind would love to have, but the only thing is with family, is that laziness doesn’t exist within this household. Everpony does their fair share of work no ifs, ands, or buts.
As I thought about it for the entire month I never presented to Applejack about the chose of joining the Wonderbolts, and I often wondered how she was going to react upon hearing about it. I needed some help with my decision and I couldn’t think of any other pony that is more dependable than Applejack.
As I arrived back in Sweet Apple Acres, I spotted Applejack doing her usual thing, which included working, or more preferable applebucking. She quickly stopped and gave me the signal to come over and talk to her, which I did. She seemed too had been tired from all the work she had been doing. “What’s wrong sugercube, yer home mighty earlier today. Why’s that?” She asked giving a sigh of relief as she leaned up against the tree that she was currently about to applebuck until I showed up. I told her about Rainbow Dashs proposal to join the wonderbolts together, which caused a sad look to appear on her face. “I see…so have you made a decision yet?” She asked trying to hide the already apparent sadness in her voice.
“No, I haven’t. Rainbow Dash seems to really want me to join the Wonderbolts with her but I don’t thing I’m cut out for stuff like that, besides I have to help you and family out here on the farm.” I said while anxiously walking back and forth.
“Aww, shoot Solar. We’ve known each other since we were little and all I’ve ever heard you talk about, was what other ponies want. Have you ever stopped to think about what you want in life?” I took a few moments to think, but I couldn’t come up with anything.
“Yes, I have Applejack. I do it everyday of my life, but I haven’t discovered what I want.” I said sounding sadden as I admitted it to her face. She walked over to me and placed her dirty hoof on my head, giving me a head noogie, which messed up my mane.
“Then don’t expect yer dream is just gonna fall from tha sky. How about trying new things, every once a while? Who knows maybe this Wonderbolt thing might work out for ya’ll, who’s too say that working on the farm is not the life for you, but what ever that dream maybe, just remember that yer good ole friend Applejack will be here supporting you every step of the way.” She said giving me a playful wink. Surprisingly I actually began to feel a lot better about what I do. I hugged Applejack and thanked her for helping me out with my little dilemma, leaving her blushing. “No problem, Sugarcube. Now are you gonna help me with these apples or what?” She said looking at me with a devious grin on her face.
