Prologue: A Dark, Stormy, and Sad Night

It was near the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon. Celestia stood on her balcony, grimacing at the dark storm clouds rolling in. She had ordered a thunderstorm for tonight. She knew something that nopony else, not even her most beloved sister, knew. Tonight the dragons would roar... Tonight would be a night in which nopony wanted to be out...

*****

It was peaceful in the Everfree Forest, a rare occasion indeed. The only disturbances were the pit pat of the rain and the occasional crack of thunder. That is until...

The forest, suddenly, began to rumble. The peace was disturbed by the fighting of two dragons. Roars of pain enveloped the entire forest. Even the cracks of thunder had a hard time competing with the ear piercing roars. The forest was being devastated. Every creature ran in fear of the disturbance.

Eventually, one of the dragons, a female holding an egg, exploded out of the forest. She was completely covered in scars, cuts, and gashes. The biggest and most fatal being one that stretched  all the way down her side. She was going near super-sonic. She knew she would die... But she knew that the egg needed to live if there was ever hope of the monstrosity that was following her to be defeated, and she knew just where to take the egg. She remembered the egg's parents tell her the name of the exact being... Well, pony to find. Take the egg to a pony named Lyra. She will take care of it until the day comes...

The Dragonmaster was very irked. He had been watching his dragon, Skoria, fight that irritating fool of a dragon from the sky. This was the second time that the dragon had escaped his hooves AND with the egg. He knew Skoria could easily get the job done. So, why had the dragon AND the egg escaped so easily? He immediately teleported to Skoria and with his poisonous voice said in anger and disappointment, "If you want something done right you just have to do it yourself!"

"Forgive me, my master," replied the black fire dragon.

"Never mind that you idiot! We must catch her and destroy the egg!"

"Yes, my master," replied Skoria with obedience. Skoria bent down and the Dragonmaster climbed up. Within seconds, they were on their way to kill the other dragon and destroy the egg...

The female was getting close to where this pony lived, a small town outside the Everfree called Ponyville. As she exited the forest and entered the town, she started the egg's transformation from an egg to a young foal. The dragon also pulled out a basket and the letter that the parents instructed her to give to Lyra.

She was nearing the musical mare's house, and the transformation was almost complete. She came upon the house that the parents had described: a two story house made of simple materials and that looked, for the most part, normal.

As she reached the front doorstep, she quickly placed the foal, who was sound asleep, in the basket with the letter, and placed a small blanket over the basket. She quickly rang the doorbell. As soon as the dragon heard hoof steps towards the door, she vanished back to the woods, to die with dignity and to buy Lyra some time.

*****

Lyra had heard the doorbell and thought Who could that be at this hour and in this weather? She got out of bed and slowly went to the door. As she approached the door, Lyra heard a strong rush of wind. She thought nothing about it and opened the door. What she saw surprised her.

It was a basket covered with a blanket. However, inside the basket, Lyra heard the soft snoring of a foal! What in the- She immediately brought the basket inside and lifted the drenched blanket off. Sure enough, there was a young, grey, pegasus foal with a red and orange mane inside along with a letter. Another thing that attracted Lyra's attention was its cutiemark. It looked almost like this, but in red. Lyra's attention went from the foal to the letter, which had her name on it. She took the letter and opened it. The letter read...

Dear Lyra,

This is an urgent request from someponies who helped you a while ago. Well, we aren't really ponies... We are actually dragons. Now this must come as a shock, but please do not throw away our request. The young foal in the basket is our child. By the time you are reading this we are most likely dead. And for all of Equestria to remain at peace you must protect our child and make sure that she survives long enough to when she can fight the ancient evil known as the Dragonmaster. Please keep her alive, and when she is old enough, please, give her the necklace in the basket. Thank you and keep her safe, please.

Thank You and Forgive Us

Smoke Storm and Green Flare

They. Were. DRAGONS! Lyra immediately looked at the pegasus foal. It was still sleeping soundly. She looked into the basket to find the necklace spoken about in the letter.

Lyra eventually found the necklace. It was a beautiful necklace that had a golden chain and at the bottom of the chain was the most complex and beautiful pendent Lyra had ever seen! It was an iron pendent that had a silver pegasus with a sapphire eye and a silver dragon with a ruby eye surrounding an emerald center piece, and between the center piece and the pegasus and dragon were all sorts of ancient writings that looked very familiar. On the round sides of the iron pendent were more ancient writings that looked even more familiar.

The dragon that had delivered the egg was almost to the Everfree when she was tackled by the Dragonmaster's dragon. "So, you decided to come to us. Thank you for being so kind! Now, hand the egg over or I will rip you to pieces myself!" exclaimed the Dragonmaster in his poisonous voice.

"Ha! You're a little too late, Dragonmaster! I have already delivered the egg! You will never find it!" exclaimed the other dragon from underneath Skoria.

The Dragonmaster growled at the new "obstacle" in his way of his master plan. "Very well, then you can join the little brat's  parents... Skoria! Finish her!" commanded the Dragonmaster, who was more than irked now.

"Skoria! You don't have to do this! You were one of us! You were their best friends!"

Skoria chuckled. "That ship sailed long ago. Back when they decided to have children, and took away the one thing I looked foward to in life! The THRONE!" The female's eyes widened to the revelation, as Skoria's claws came down like a guillotine to cut her head off.

*****

Lyra was still staring at the pendent, when all of a sudden, the foal awoke and began to bawl. Not cry, but bawl! Lyra immediately ran over to the foal to comfort her. Something terrible had happened, and it was obvious that whoever dropped the foal off would not be coming back. Not now, and not ever...

"Good work, Skoria. For once in your miserable life, you have pleased me," stated the Dragonmaster, smiling wickedly down at the cold headless corpse of the dragon that had put the monkey wrench in his plans.

"Thank you, Master."

The Dragonmaster and Skoria then took off to their lair to formulate a way for the plan to succeed even though the egg had been delivered.

As they left, the storm continued and silence was restored, except for the pit pat of rain and the occasional crack of thunder. And the entire storm seemed to be mourning the death of the dragon. It continued though on this dark, stormy, and sad night...
