The Mythology of Vamponies

To fully understand the world of the vampony, one must fully comprehend the history and mythology of Cadaver Sanguisugis Pullanus.

In the earliest parts of the Celestial Rule, following the great Nightmare Night battle between Celestia and Nightmare Moon, a small town on the outskirts of the Everfree Forest fell to a plague. Every night, villagers claimed that the fallen victims of the battles would rise from their graves and terrorize the townsfolk. Some reports indicated that several former lunar guards would roam the town at night and attack virgin mares in their rooms, leaving a bloodless and violated corpse laying in their beds. The villagers reported that to keep their children and women safe at night, they would leave piles of sand in front of their doors and windows, believing the creatures could not enter until they had counted every single grain.

A meer 70 years later, reports of walking corpses began to spread through the capital city of Canterlot. Several royal guards were found in the early morning of each Sunday impalled on the spires of the palace, several fang punctures located on their necks and limbs. This time, the attacks were on the stallion guards and did not seem to reflect guard status or sexual status. Many of the guards began spreading rumors that a slate grey pegasus with glowing red eyes would sneek into the barracks every night and select a victim. She was then said to remove the body until she would impale it on the spires of the royal palace. Princess Celestia had no comment on any of the deaths or the manor of deaths. This lasted for a total of 6 and a half months.

The next reports of aledged vampony attacks did not appear until the 560th year of the Celestial rule when a group of strange looking ponies came into the small town of Hoofington. The travelers stayed in the town for a total of 6 days. By the 7th day, reports of deaths stopped coming from the royal guard station in Hoofington, along with any outgoing mail and telegraphs. Several days later, a group of guards ventured into Hoofington to find all of the townsfolk either missing or dead with their limbs severed and their throats torn out. Celestia also did not comment on the manner of the deaths, but was rumored to have passed a law that allowed the guards to search anypony that was suspected to be behind these crimes, which had by then been given the term Vampony Stop & Searches. To this day, Hoofington remains a ghost town.

Before recent times, the last reports of any vampony attacks came from Cloudsdale in the 899th year of the Celestial rule. Several ponies were found dead in an abandoned warehouse in the Storm Storage Facility section of the Cloudsdale Weather Factory. The prime suspect in the murders was a rainbow maned filly that had been born 6 years prior. After a strenuous 3 year investigation, the filly was found Not Guilty by the Equestrian Royal Court. The murders, in which the victims had all died of extreme blood loss from multiple wounds to the bodies, were deemed to be a random act of violence. The only thing about the deaths that have baffled experts was the fact the several of the stallions who died had lost nearly 90% of their blood, which was not found at the crime scene. There are currently no records indicating where the suspected filly is and no death ledger was filed at any office in Equestria or any of the outlying nations.

Today, there have been several reports of ponies who have gone missing in and around the Ponyville, Cloudsdale, and Canterlot areas. Extreme amounts of blood where found around the last known location of all the missing ponies except for several that had disappeared around the Ponyville area, most of which have not been found to the time of this report. Two of these reports included a well known fasion designer and her sister, who lived in downtown Ponyville. Nearly all of the missing pony reports have been listed in the more recent months as recovery operations instead of search and rescue. The most recent reports have included three royal guards, two of which who where found three days later dead in a ravine deep within the Everfree Forest. The other guard was found 64 miles to the northwest of Baltimare, wandering around the Hoofington area. He is currently residing in the mental care unit of Canterlot Royal Hospital, suffering from extreme paranoia and schizophrenia.

The true question about the vampony that one must ask themselves is: Are they fact or fiction? Can the dead rise from the grave, drink the blood of their victims and return at night? Do things such as holy water, wooden stakes, piles of sand, garlic, and invitation really kill a vampony? Are these old mares tales that mothers use to keep adventurous fillies close to home, or are they something even more sinister and seductive than we can imagine.

In my opinion....the question remains unanswered.

~Twilight Sparkle

Twilight set down her feather quill, the desk in front of her littered with several books, a few rolls of parchment, and several empty ink pots scattered across the cherry wood surface. She had just spent the last several hours researching the topic Princess Celestia had assigned her small Equestrian Mythology class for their Nightmare Night projects. She had been lucky enough to have gotten to research a topic she has had some familiarity with the Vampony. She had been a fan of the Starlight Saga since it came out three years ago, but she was not so happy to find that Equestria's most historical Vamponies where not as sparkly and a lot more....bloody. It was kind of refreshing to see that she would not be going as Starlight Sawn for Nightmare Night, as per the assignment they have to dress as one of the creatures they researched.

She glanced over at the clock on the wall, the hands reading that it was a few seconds past 2:30 a.m. She rubbed her eyes as she began to  levitate her books back over to their appropriate shelves, the royal library more empty than it usually was. The only other hint of life in the entire room was a tall white alicorn that stood silently in the darkness just out of view of the lavender unicorn that was still clearing her work space. Her normally beautiful amethyst eyes where dark set and nearly ruby red.

Soon, Twilight. You barely have an idea of what this assignment will truly mean to you, but soon...you will know why.

You will know fear.
