Chapters "AH-" A loud scream escaped from Moonsongs lips, only to be abruptly stopped by her hoof clamping shut over her mouth.
"Hey! Are you screaming at me? Good! I'm the dreaded..." preparing to bellow from atop a boulder, Pinkie Pie was cut short by the mysterious pony in front of her. She was clearly oblivious to who she was with, and how much everypony longed to even know her name.
"HEY! That was mean! Meanie!" A cloud of dirt raised from the ground as Pinkies pink hoof slammed into the ground.
There was thousands of words that Moonsong could say to Pinkie. Annoying, crazy, loud, she'd be there till next year if she said all of them.
"I didn't even manage to make you laugh! If you had've let me say what I was you'd have loved-" Pinkies speech came to a halt. Suddenly her mouth fell open, her eyes grew wide and her body shook with excitement. "Wait a minute... You're the mysterious pony everyone loves! Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!" She was now hopping around in her usual silly manner.
"Err, no I'm not?" Moonsong knew her secret had already been revealed to the loudest pony in town.
"Yes you are, silly! The dark blue coat, the black and white wind-swept mane, the black and white tail, the rose pink eyes and... The crescent moon cutie mark! It's you! Oh wow! What's your name? Huh? Where are you from? Do you like it there? Why won't you speak to me? Helloooo? Anyone home? Hey, why won't-" a hoof pressed firmly against her mouth.
"Okay. I'm gonna answer your questions. But you better PROMISE me that you wont shout, or sing, or dance, or tell ANYPONY what I've told you. Deal?"
Pinkie nodded her head, hungry for answers.
Her mouth was released from Moonsongs tight grip.
"First of all, my name's Moonsong. Moonsong Shimmer," Moonsong didn't like this one bit. " I'm from an area in Canterlot, and before you ask, no. I'm not a snobby stuckup pony like some of those ponies who live in Canterlot. I hate it there. Nobody understands me, except one pony..." A flood was raging in her eyes as her memories ran wild in her head like a hurricane.
Moonsong... I need to tell you something.
Yeah, granny?
In a few minutes, I wont be walking on the grounds of Canterlot anymore.
You mean your wings are strong enough to fly again?
No dear.. I'll be in the sky, watching over you.
Granny.. You're saying you're not in the hospital for your wings?
Precisely.
But... They told me you'd be okay! They told me you'd be in a better place tomorow!
Moonsong, I know it's hard, but be strong. Don't let anyone, I repeat, ANYONE, get you down. You are a beautiful and strong young filly and I know you can do this. Whenever you're upset, or feeling blue, go to the everfree forest. Thats where I'll be... And remember that I will always love you.
Granny no! Don't leave me!
A teardrop trickled down Moonsongs absent face.
"Oh.. It's okay! You know what would make you feel better? A Party!" awkward silence filled the area. "Or a nice long walk?"
They walked for what seemed like years. Through the forest, past sweet apple acres, all the way through to Canterlot.
Many disgusted glances shot at them both, Pinkies chicken costume not helping at all.
"Come on, we can stop at my place. Well... my grannys place."
Approaching the small cottage, Moonsong began to wonder what it would be like. She hadn't been there since her granny passed. The key had been given to her in her Grannys will and to her surprise, when she opened the door, she found that the room was spotless, despite being deserted for the past 8 years.
"Come in, Pinkie, was it?"
"Yeparoony! Thats my name!"
The slightly delapidated floor creaked as the 2 ponies sat on a chair.
"Huh? Moonsong, whats this? 'A Letter To My Moonsong'.. Thats your name!"
A confused look overtook her face. It was her grannys writing. Ripping the envelope open in a wild state of excitement, she found a small gem inside, the shape of Princess Lunas cutie mark, with a black background.
She read the letter aloud.
To my dearest Moonsong.
By the time you have read this, I will have passed on to the world in the sky. I never got the chance to tell you about your life, and why it was so complicated, and for that I am deeply sorry. I was always too scared to tell you, incase you hated me for it, or incase you went into a state of shock that you could never recover from.
This gem represents your life. You see, although you are a pegasus, you belonged to a family of alicorns. The royals, to be exact. Princess Luna, as you know, has the same coat colour as you, and a similar cutie mark. What you may not know, is that years ago, before you were born, she was with your father, Electric. He shared your mane colour and eye colour. He was just a pegasus, which is the reason why you are a pegasus. He passed away shortly before you were born. Princess Luna became lonely, worried and sick at the death of your father and drove herself crazy with grief. This caused Princess Celestia to send her to the moon. Worried that her sister would find out about you, she gave you to me. She told me to take care of you, to love you like my own, and to tell you every day that she loves you dearly. But I did not tell you every day that she loved you... I was selfish. I loved you like you was my own and you was too young to know the truth. I now just fear that it is too late. I was not blood related to you, but I was your granny. And even if you werent my own, I would have done anything for your happiness... except to let you go. I can never forgive myself for that.
Stay strong, moonsong. I love you.
Granny

"Oh.. My.. Celestia. You're Lunas... DAUGHTER?!"
Silence. Moonsong just sat in silence. Her whole life had been lived based on lies. Her granny wasn't her granny at all - she was just a kind woman who took her in when she had nowhere to go. Her mother hadn't got lost in the forests on an adventure as her granny had always told her. Tears flowed down her face before Pinkies shaky hoof wiped them away.
"Hey, this Pinkies not so bad after all." thought Moonsong.
The two shared a hug before falling into a deep sleep.
Hey, spitfire! Moonsongs getting a kissy wissy from her granny! Awwwww. How PRECIOUS... Does little moonie-loonie wuv her wittle gwanny? HA!
Haha! Hey soarin, look at that! Shes crying! Awwww... does wittle Moonie Loonie need a hug from her wittle granny? Hahahaha!
Hey, Moonie-uncoolie! Did you know nobody likes you? Haha, poor moonie loonie hasnt got any friends. Awwww. Hahahaha!
"SHUT UP!"
Leaping from her chair, Pinkie pie rubbed her eyes after being woken up way too quickly by Moonsong.
"Who are you talking to?" groaned Pinkie sleepily.
"Oh... Nopony." replied Moonsong, who was now aware that she was talking in her sleep.
"Moona, I was thinking about the letter you read last night. Do-"
"Moona?"
"Yeah! It's like Luna and Moonsong mixed together! Moona!"
"Okay then... carry on?"
"Well, do you think we could find her? Princess Luna? I bet it'd be GREAT I mean, the PRINCESS! You're a royal pony, Moona! And IMAGINE all the ATTENTION you'd get!" Pinkies eyes were wide with wonder and joy.
"Pinkie... It doesnt just work like that."
"Yes it does! And in the end you'll all live happily ever after!"
"Pinkie, come on now... Don't you think we're jumping to conclusions here? I mean, what if I'm not really Lunas daughter?"
"But you're granny would never li- Oh. I see what you mean..."
"Exactly."
"Well, theres no harm in trying?"
Pinkie pleaded and pleaded until Moona finally gave in.
"YAAAAAY!"
Moona was soaring high in the sky. It wasn't just her body that was high, she also had high hopes of finding princess Luna. Although she hadn't agreed to it at first, she was secretly excited to meet the mare that could possibly be her mother.
Eventually, after flying over the majestic city of Canterlot for what seemed like an eternity, they reached the royal palace.
"Hey! We're here! I can't wait to get my hooves off of this dusty hill and onto the shiny palace floor!"
"How the heck does that pony still have energy in her?" contemplated Moona.
Putting on her best 'royal' walk, Pinkie strutted past the guards, only to be stopped by the strength of their white wings blocking the entrance.
"WHO GOES THERE?"
"Pinkie Pie and Moonso- Err, I mean, my friend. We're here to see-"
"PRINCESS CELESTIA?" "Wow," Moona thought, "Even the guards talk in the royal canterlot voice."
"Um, no, actually, we're here to see Princess Luna!" Squealed Pinkie with excitement.
Their white wings snapped shut against their tall, figures, their expressions remaining blank the whole time.
"Wow..." Moonas eyes grew wide as she admired the magnificent palace before her eyes.
"You've never been here? Oh boy, they have the most AMAZING doughnut shop. Spike took us there once. It was de-licious!" Once again, Pinkie had got lost in her own thoughts.
"Remember why we're here, Pinkie."
"Oh! Right! To find the princess."
After 4 spiral staircases and 6 endless coridors, they finally reached Princess Lunas chambers.
Moonsong gulped down her fear and approached the solid wooden door. At first, she was unsure whether to knock or not. Her mind was telling her not to, but her heart was telling her otherwise. After brief thoughts, she knocked on the door and called for Princess Luna.
No answer.
As they started to trudge back through the corridor, a heavy sigh escaped their mouths. But then a glimmer of hope appeared. They heard the creak of a door, a wooden door, opening near Lunas room.
"Princess Luna!" Pinkie exclaimed.
"Ah, come in my little ponies," said the soft voice of Princess Luna, who had been practising her 'normal' voice.
"Please sit. Who do I have the pleasure of speaking to today?" asked Luna, her canterlot voice slightly coming forward in her excitement.
"Oh, sorry. It's just that not many people come to visit me.."
The two ponies stood silently in the corner of the room. Moona was the first to speak.
"Hello, Princess Luna. I need to speak to you about your... family."
The princesses pupils dialated. All her memories came back through her, enveloping her in a drowning pool of sorrow.
No! Please Electric, what will I do with Moonsong?
Take good care of her, my dear...
Suddenly she snapped away from her flashback.
"Are you referring to my sister?" She knew full well they were talking about her child.
"No, Princess. We're talking about your... child."
"I DEMAND TO KNOW WHO TOLD YOU OF THIS!" bellowed Luna in her Canterlot speech. Her eyes glowed white with anger and sorrow.
"Princess, I... I think I'm your daughter."
The princess immediately inspected the young pony who had entered her room.
"The same coat colour, similar cutie mark, same eye colour as Electric, same mane colour as Electric... but the name," thought Luna to herself, "whats her name?"
"Your name would be..?"
"...Moonsong."
"Moonsong....?"
"Moonsong Shimmer."
"By Celestia, this can't be!" announced Luna, slightly confused and slightly happy.
"I lived with my Granny for 10 years, and 8 years ago, she passed on. I recieved a letter from her..." Moonsong slipped the letter out from her saddle bag and handed it to the emotionally wrecked princess in front of her.
After reading every word over 3 times to be sure, the princess finally spoke.
"There is only one way to be sure if you are my daughter. I'm certain that when you was a newborn filly, you was diagnosed with a condition that gave you extremely strong wings, capable of flying at gravity defying speeds, faster than anypony around. You will be a competitor in a race with the 3 fastest ponies in town: Rainbow Dash, Soarin', and Spitfire."
Spitfire and soarin'... Spitfire and soarin'...
"It will take place tomorow in the cloudisseum. Be ready, young pegasus."
It was a tense moment. Moonsongs nerves had taken over her body. She seemed only to have the energy to pace back and forward hundreds of times on a tuft of worn down cloud. To her delight, a very familiar pink and purple air balloon was rocketing up into the sky with a very familiar pink pony inside.
"Oh boy Moona, I can't wait to watch you fly! You're gonna beat them all! Even rainbow dash, who is THE fastest pony EVER!" She leaned over the basket and put her hoof on the clouds.
"Wait Pinkie DON'T STEP ON THAT-"
"What, silly?" Pinkie began hopping on the cloud.
"I never will understand that pony..." murmered Moona to herself.
"Hello and welcome fillies and gentlecolts! We've got a race today that will sweep you off your hooves! Competing in todays race is the one and only, Rainbow dash!"
Cheers and whistles erupted from the eager crowd.
"And lets not forget, two of the spectacular wonderbolts, Spitfire and Soarin'!"
An even mightier cheer came from the crowd, some of which were standing up for the two wonderbolts.
"And finally, the towns very own mystery pony, Moonsong!"
Silence. All that could be heard was Pinkie Pies high pitched voice cheering as loud as she could.
"Ponies, please take your places at the starting line!"
Gingerly, Moonsong flew to the starting line between her two enemies, Spitfire and Soarin.
"Well well well, look who it is! Little Moonie Loonie..." Spitfire said boastily.
"Careful! Your Granny might come out here and give you a little kissy wissy!" jeered soarin.
Moonsongs eyes glowed with anger, her wings outstretched, ready to fly.
"And in 3... 2.... 1...."
The loud sound of the starting horn echoed throughout the arena.
Shooting off like a lion chasing its prey, Moonsong dashed through the arena. But after just a minute, Spitfire overtook her.
"Awww wittle moonie loonie! Your grannys not here to give you a kissy wissy now LOSER!"
A spire of smoke was left in Spitfires tracks.
"Hey moonie loonie, I bet your granny could fly faster than that! See you around sucker!"
Yet again, she was overtaken.
"Come on Moona. Get your act together. For the princess."
Her thoughts were interrupted by the announcers echoing voice.
"And it looks like we have a winner! Spitfire and Soarin came joint first place with Rainbow Dash second and Moonsong last! Bad luck Moonsong!"
"What? Was I really that slow?" whispered Moona to herself.
Princess Luna shot a worried look at Moonsong. She then proceeded to gracefully fly to the announcer and whisper something in his ear, staring at moonsong the whole time.
"Oh, it appears we have a last minute add on round! This ones for fancy wingwork! You will be in pairs for this challenge! First up: Spitfire and Soarin!"
An ear-piercing scream came from the audience, followed by overwhelming applause and cheering.
After their 2 minutes was up, the announcer returned to his podium and began commentating again.
"We've encountered some difficulties with Rainbow Dash! The poor mare has fractured her wing after hitting it on the finish line post as she flew past! Is there anypony who could take her place and work with Moonsong?"
"I will."
The first time she was seen, she was dashing through the black clouds above the everfree forest. The time after that, she was in deep thought, standing unrecognised among the shadowbolts. Nopony knows who 'she' is... All they know is that shes different from the other mares.
"Damn, I've been spotted..." thought Moonsong as she quickly flew through the foggy air that Princess Luna brought every nightmare night. She knew everypony wanted to know who she was. She knew that there would be hundreds of ponies throwing themselves at her as soon as the chance was given. Especially Rainbow Dash, who, as everypony knew, was a huge fan of the wonderbolts. Moonsong knew the wonderbolts like the back of her hoof. If RD ever found out about that, she'd be all over her...
Moonsong shuddered at the memory of the wonderbolts.
Oh moonsong, whats that on your flank? Oh, its just your pathetic cutie mark. A white crescent? Seriously? Hahaha! Gosh, talk about UNCOOL! You with me soarin'?
She shook her head violently and awoke from her daydream. She had no time to think about her enemies. Remembering the reason she was thinking about it, she darted into the horizon, easily outflying anypony who tried to catch up with her.
Her glossy, deep blue coat shone in the dazzling moonlight. As did her black and white mane that was a similar style to Spitfires.
OH MY DAYS! Dont make me laugh, Moonie-loonie! I grew out of the 'I just got caught in a whirlwind' look. Maybe you should too. Hahahaha!
"Hypocrite..." Moonsong muttered to herself, "I see your smug face every time I buy a newspaper and all I see is the 'I just got caught in a whirlwind' look..."
She came to a stop in a secluded area of the everfree forest. A place nopony would ever visit, nopony but Moonsong, that is.
"HI! What are YOU doing here, missus mystery wystery ?"
"Oh Celestia. Anyone but her," Moonsong moaned to herself. She felt as if she might as well give up all hope. But, like a good sport, she made her way to the arena.
"Don't worry moonie loonie. Let me do all the work."
The pair shot up into the sky, turning back to back and plummeting down toward the earth, wings flat on their sides, before suddenly outstretching their wings, forming a spiral of blue and orange where they had fallen.
"Wow! That was an impressive move from Spitfire and Moonsong! Can they keep it up?" Exclaimed the amazed announcer.
"You know I still don't like you, right? I just wanna win this competition. Well, I want anyone to win it besides you!" Chuckled Spitfire.
"Lets just get this over with." Came a shaky reply from Moonsong.
Three impressive tricks later, Spitfire told Moonsong to strap in her wings and just fall.
"What?! Are you crazy? I'll die!" yelled Moonsong.
"Trust me! I'll do a sonic rainboom and catch you. I can pull it off easily if you will be brave enough to do it! Or do you wanna go home crying to your wittle granny that you were too chicken to do it?"
"Thats it. Lets do this." She effortlessly wrapped the band that Spitfire had ripped from her outfit around her wings and fell.
She felt as if she was falling forever. After 10 seconds, she could see Spitfire forcing her way down through the air to catch her, the air splitting at her hoof tips. Their hoofs touched, then something extraordinarily evil happened.
"See you later, Moonie Loonie!"
Spitfire catapulted through the air in a twirling motion, leaving orange and yellow trails behind her as Moonsong fell closer and closer to the ground.
"YOU TRAITOR! HOW COULD YOU!" Screamed Moonsong, knowing that it was too late. She could only watch as the other ponies stared. It was too late for them to rescue her, 3 more seconds and she would be joining her granny.
She counted her last seconds as tears stormed in her eyes.
3...2...1....
........
She opened her eyes to find herself on the back of... Princess Luna?
"Princess! But how did you get here in time?" cried Moona in a state of shock.
"Anything for my daughter," replied Luna with a soft voice, her eyes welling up.
A splash of water fell from the cloudiseum, which they soon found out was Pinkie Pie crying at the scene.
"I love you, mum,"
"I love you too, Moonsong,"
THE END :)
