I wasn't prepared.... (Romance, Sad, Slice of Life?) Author: Steel Soul
Previous ChapterBy Steel Soul
Twilight sighed deeply as she leaned her head against the window of her living quarters, the patter of raindrops causing her depressed mood to deepen even more. The lavender mare’s eyes drifted towards the wings that limply hung from her back. She slammed her head softly against the glass barrier not really knowing what to do. Not really knowing how to do it.
She was a princess.
A bucking princess.
And she couldn’t have been more unprepared for what lay in front of her.
“Dear Celestia…why me…why now…?” She said as she softly hit her head against the window once more. “I…I wasn’t prepared for this…” She leaned her head against the window, wrapping her hooves around herself before sobbing softly.
“Twilight?”
The mare’s eyes drifted towards the figure at the door. A black stallion stood in the door frame, a concerned look upon his features. His white mane matted down with the scent of fresh rain filling the room. He stepped closer, a gentle smile appareing upon his features.
“Um…hey…Hope I’m not interrupting.”
The mare wiped a hoof across her eyes before forcing herself to smile. “Thunderlane…You made it…”
The black pegasus puffed his chest out as he spoke. “Course I did. No way in Tartarus would I miss your coronation.” He felt something crash into him, but instead of Twilight’s normal tackle, she had wrapped her hooves around his neck, sobbing softly into his already damp fur. The stallion raised a hoof to stroke her mane, the wet appendage damping her hair as she did so.
“Heh…Congratulations Twilight. You deserve it more than anypony else.” He pulled her way to look into her puffy red eyes. “Or should I say your majesty?”
“NO!” She screamed, causing the stallion to rear back a bit. Catching herself, she lowered her voice to a whisper. “N-No…I…Its bad enough that I’ll have a whole country calling me that. Please…not you…never you.”
Tunderlane pulled her close, stroking her mane once again. “Ok Twilight. Ok. I promise.”
She lay in his hooves for a long while, her face buried into his chest as she felt his heartbeat’s rhythm. It wasn’t long before she looked up at him. Her eyes were puffy and her cheeks tearstained. Thunderlane had to do all that he could to not outright laugh at the miserable mare.
“I…I must look like a total wreck right?” She asked with a sad smile, wiping a bit of snot that was beginning to run from her nose.
The stallion chuckled as he replied. “Yeah…You kinda do.” To which he received a strike to his foreleg. Dang she could hit hard. “Heh but for a total wreck you still long just a cute.” He said with a wink.
The mare blushed brightly before turning away. “I…I best go clean myself up huh? You had wanted to take me out to celebrate so-“
“Well…” Thunderlane interrupted. “We can stay here if you want.” He smiled as he wrapped his hooves around the mare. He could feel her wings begin to twitch slightly and he smiled at the soft feathery feel of them.
“I…I would like that…” She said with a sigh. She felt the stallion’s wings wrap around her frame as he pulled her closer and sighed contently.
It was a while before he spoke again. “Wow…A princess. Still kind of surreal no matter how you look at it…”
The mare leaned her head back and closed her eyes, enjoying the feeling of the stallion’s embrace. “I…I’m still reeling from the shock as well Thunderlane…” She felt him shift and looked upwards towards him. She could see him looking down at her, his golden eyes pouring into her purple ones. She blushed when he didn’t say anything for a long time, just staring.
“W-What? Do I look that bad?”
The stallion chucked. “Well there’s that…” He received another hit. “Ouch…Heh…but that’s not the reason I’m looking at you.” He paused and looked away. “I’m just remembering…”
“Remembering what?” She asked with growing desire to know.
“How we first met.”
“Oh…that…” She giggled. “That was so long ago and yet…I remember it like it was yesterday.
“I still feel it like it was yesterday too.” The stallion joked nuzzling her cheek. “That’s was the first and last time I challenged Rainbow to a backwards flying race. Ugh…worst day ever. Not only did I lose but I broke my wing and scraped my leg as well.” He looked down at the mare. “The only good thing that came out of that whole day was…seeing you.”
The alicorn blushed as she spoke. “It was quite the impression to make for a first meeting.”
“Hey. You know me. I’m all about first impressions.” The stallion said proudly.
“You do know that was the worst first impression in the history of first impressions right Thunderlane?” Twilight asked.
“Hey If you if you’re doing it wrong then you better give it your all, right?” The stallion admitted proudly.
“Dear Celestia…what do I see in you?”
“Besides my devilish good looks and sparkling personality?” The stallion said holding up his head up high.
“Yeah.”
He was quiet for a moment before shrugging and smiling dumbly. “I have no idea. Though it sounds more like a personal problem.”
Both pegasus and alicorn laughed uproariously before falling into silence, the patter of the raindrops the only melody within the room. Twilight pressed the back of her head against his chest, allowing the pegasus to rest his chin within her mane, the soft scent of lavender filling his every senses.
“Nothing will be the same will it Thunderlane?” Twilight said breaking the silence. Thunderlane closed his eyes listening to her as she spoke. “I…I will have to live at the castle. I’ll have to leave my friends in Ponyville…I…I didn’t want that. I don’t want that.” She began to shake. “I…I…” She began to shake. “I’m scared Thunderlane. I’m scared that I will mess everything up. I know my friends relied on me before but this…this is different. This isn’t just some…some adventure. It’s ruling a nation. What if I’m not up for the task…Thunderlane I…I…” Thunderlane’s hoof fell over her mouth gently, silencing her.
“Let’s run away.”
Twilight’s eyes shot open. “W-what?”
“We can run away. You and me. On the lamb.” Her turned her to show her his smile. “We can run and run and keep on running. The lands to the east are huge I hear. We can stay there. You and me. We can leave all of this behind. What do you say?”
Twilight looked at his face trying to find an ounce of his kidding personality. Needless to say, she couldn’t. “You’re…You’re serious…”
He held her close. “Dead serious…”
The mare blushed before pulling away from him. “But…but I…I mean…”
“If it’s too much for you Twilight then let’s get out of here. If you’re having this many conflicting emotions then I won’t fault you for wanting to run.” He trotted towards the mare, placing a hoof upon her face. She leaned into it, allowing the stallion to stroke her cheek softly. “Twilight Sparkle. I’ll love you no matter what decision you make. I’ll stand by you in the worst of times and in the best of times. If nopony else will then I will…one hundred precent.”
