The Crossroads
From the mouths of zebras
Previous ChapterNext ChapterTwilight has been asleep for several hours; however her slumber is disturbed by a loud knocking coming from the front door. Twilight grumbles and gets up yawning. “Who would come here at this hour? It’s still dark.” She slowly climbs down the stairs as another loud knock comes from the door. “I’m coming, I’m coming!” She shouts in a rather annoyed tone. She reaches the door and flings it open. “What?!” She announces gruffly.
There standing opposite of Twilight is, of course, non-other than Trixie starring at her with the same soulless eyes from the night before. “I want your body.” she says with a sort of emptiness in her voice.
Twilight’s eyes widen with fear. “No…No, no. Not this again!”
Trixie holds aloft the large kitchen knife. “And I want it now.”
Twilight growls and she attempts to fire the most powerful beam she can muster point blank in Trixie’s face, but to no avail. Trixie stands there unshaken and unmoved by Twilight’s attempt at defending herself. Trixie steps forward slowly.
Twilight begins to back away from the assailant. “St-Stop this! Stop right now!”
Trixie backs Twilight up against the bookcase placing the knife across her throat.
Twilight sniffed. “I-I’m not scared of you! You aren’t real!”
“Don’t be so sure of that my dear.” She says letting out an evil cackle, raising the knife.
Twilight feels herself being shaken vigorously. “Twilight! Twilight Wake up!”
Twilight opens her eyes to find hovering above her; she lets out a loud scream but is quickly silenced by Trixie’s hand.
Trixie strokes her mane gently. “It’s alright, It’s alright you’re awake now.”
Twilight looks up into her comforting eyes for a moment before springing out of the bed and pulling on her clothes.
“Where are you going?”
“To see Zecora.”
“At this time of night?”
Twilight looked out the window; it was still very dark outside. She lets out a sigh as sits on the side of the bed and places her palm on her temple. “I…I had another nightmare”
Trixie places her hands on the purple mare’s shoulders and begins to massage her. “Do you want to talk about it?” She asks in a comforting voice.
Twilight slowly nodded. “The same dream, you were coming at me with a knife, you kept saying you wanted my body; you seemed very determined to get it.”
Trixie wraps her arms around her from behind and kisses her neck reassuringly. “I could never harm my Twilight, now try and get some rest, please?” She said with a yawn.
Twilight sighs and leans into Trixie’s embrace. “I’ll try” She says before laying back down clinging onto Trixie as she falls asleep.
*~*~*
Twilight is able to sleep through the rest of the night without any further interruption. Twilight yawns sitting up slowly; she opens her eyes and looks on the bed beside her, Trixie is not there.
She slowly stands up and stretches as she hears pot and pans being banged around in the kitchen and the smell of breakfast making her mouth water.
Twilight starts her way down the stairs. “Trixie?”
Trixie turns around from the stove, wearing a cute looking apron, “You’re awake” she says with a smile “I made you a little something before you head over to Zecora’s”
Twilight sat at the counter and smiled back “Oh…You didn’t have to do that.”
Trixie kisses her on the cheek setting a plate in front of her. “Well you’ve made me so happy the least I can do is make breakfast once in a while, and besides you’ve had a rough night.”
Twilight nods, blushing slightly at the kiss she just received. “Thank you, that was very nice”
Trixie takes off her apron and walks towards the door. “I may not be back when you get home, I’m headed back over To Rarity’s to finish my dress, plus I have to go to the market. The Great and Powerful Trixie needs some peanut butter crackers.” Trixie walks out the door as twilight finishes her meal.
*~*~*
It was approximately mid-day before twilight reached Zecora’s hut deep in the Everfree Forest.
Twilight reaches up and knocks on the door “Zecora, Are you home?
The door opens, the zebra looks at her and smiles. “Ah Twilight, so nice of you to visit me, I look forward to the wedding of yourself and Trixie.”
Twilight shook her head. “No….No Zecora. This doesn’t make any sense. I don’t remember any of this; I don’t remember falling in love with Trixie. Something is wrong, very wrong”
“It seems to me you need a place to think, come inside and join me for a drink.”
Twilight nods and walks in. “I…I probably sound crazy, but it’s true.”
“It seems something altered your memory, what has happened before you came to see me?”
Twilight lets out a sigh holding herself. “The past two nights I’ve had the same awful dream , Trixie she keeps coming at me with a knife, and she always says ‘I want your body’”
“Was that all just a dream? That does not seem like much reason to scream.”
“But…but then I woke up and apparently I’m marrying Trixie.”
“You do not remember your plan to be wed? If I did not know better I’d say you were brain dead.”
Twilight looks discouraged. “I told you Zecora, I don’t remember any of it, I don’t know what is going on.” She says holding her head.
“Hmm…I remember a tale from a distant land, of a stallion whom once awoke in the sand. He said that he had been on the run, searching for the memory of the place he was from.”
“Zecora, that isn’t exactly helping, all that tells me is that this isn’t the first time this has happened. Oh what am I supposed to do? I can’t marry Trixie, I barely remember her much less love her. What should I do?”
“Of this I am unsure, but is it really a problem when your lover is pure?”
“But I don’t…At least I don’t think I…I just don’t know”
“Take some time to look into your heart, not excuse me while… I eat this….strawberry tart?”
Twilight let out a sigh thinking to herself for a bit. “What am I supposed to so? I don’t love Trixie….do I? Oh I wish I could remember what is going on” She sits quietly for a moment before looking up to Zecora.“…Could I have that drink now?”
Zecora pours them two cups of tea. “Be careful not to scold your tongue, It is a shame to harm one so young.”
She nods and sips her tea. “What would you do Zecora?”
“All I can do is offer this advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice”
Twilight stares at her for a moment, not fully understanding what she said, before giggling to herself. “Can you say orange?”
Orange Is a word I do not often say, but there is not much call to anyway.”
Twilight sits quietly alone with her thoughts for some time. “I don’t understand, why don’t I remember anything? Why can’t I remember Trixie? Clearly she’s in love with me….but can I honestly say I love her? What if I marry Trixie and I don’t love her? But then if I don’t marry her she will be devastated. Would it really be so bad being with her though? She did make me breakfast and seems to genuinely care about my well-being…Oh I’m even more confused than before I came here.”
Twilight stays at Zecora’s for several hours before taking her leave and heads back to the library.
Twilight walks inside and finds a note on the counter.
Twilight,
Went to go see Trixie’s dress, dragging your brother with me
-Cadence
Twilight reads the note quickly before plopping down in her chair. “Spike are you home?”
“Just a minute.” Spike yells coming out from a hole under the book shelf.
Twilight tilts her head “….Where have you been?”
“I…Uhh…nowhere, you were saying?”
“What is down that hole Spike?”
“Well….It’s…” He lets out a sigh “It’s a portal.” He pauses “You see the reason you don’t remember anything is because you’re from the other side…and well…the Twilight that was here is over there.”
Twilight’s mouth dropped open and her eyes widened “WHAT?!”
“Look I know you’re mad but…”
WHAM! Twilight hits Spike with a book
“OUCH! Will you just listen to me for one moment?”
Twilight holds another book aloft. “You better start explaining.”
“I couldn’t let Trixie know that our Twilight ran out on her, you’ve seen how she is, she would be heart broken.”
Twilight dropped the book and sat back down with a sigh. “Why did the other Twilight run away?”
“She kept having these awful nightmares, she couldn’t stand it anymore. I was just over there checking up on things; she seems to have fit in seamlessly.”
Twilight frowned. “Wh…what? They didn’t…didn’t notice I was gone?”
“No, it’s just, well it’s the same thing that has happened here, has anypony guessed you weren’t our Twilight?”
Twilight nodded. “But…but what do I do? I can’t go home with another me running around.”
“There is one more thing” Spike says picking up a book. “I found a spell that could help with your nightmares, and well…if it’s all the same to you… would you stay? For Trixie’s sake?”
She sighs and takes the book. “I just, I just need some time to think, why don’t you….I don’t know just get out of here.”
Spike nods and runs out of the room.
Twilight holds her head looking at the book. “Well…no harm in trying the spell.” She flips through the book and preforms the spell.
Twilight sat by herself sitting in her chair for an hour or more before Rarity bursts through the door in a panic. “TWILIGHT! IT WAS AWFUL!”
Twilight yelped falling out of her chair. “What was?! What’s going on?!”
“There was an accident, Trixie, she fell off the stool while I was fitting her dress, and she hit her head on my sewing machine. She’s in the hospital.”
Twilight gasped getting up from the ground. “Oh my gosh! Is she alright?!”
“I don’t know, your brother took her there, I came straight here to find you.”
Twilight nodded. “Let’s get going then.”
Rarity immediately grabbed her arm and rushed Twilight out the door.
The two of them reach the hospital; Trixie in lying in a bed in the recovery ward with a bandage around her head.
Twilight runs to the bedside and looks down at her. “Tri…Trixie are you okay?”
Trixie looks up at her and smiles. “I’m…I’m alright, just a slight headache is all, but they told me they want me to stay here over night,”
Twilight let out a sigh of relief taking a hold of her arm and sitting down in the chair. “I’ll wait here with you.”
Trixie puts her hand on Twilight’s and smiles up at her. “I’m glad they found you, I wasn’t sure if you were back from Zecora’s, by the way, what did you find out? Are you feeling any better?”
Twilight rubs her arm with her thumb. “It doesn’t matter right now, don’t worry about it.”
Twilight stays with her for an hour or so before Nurse Redheart comes in, “Visiting hours are over Miss Sparkle.”
Twilight grips Trixie’s arm tighter. “Couldn’t I stay here overnight with her?”
“I’m sorry, but we couldn’t allow that, you understand don’t you?”
Trixie looks up at Twilight. “I’ll be fine, just go home, I’ll be back tomorrow.” She leans up and pecks her on the cheek.
Twilight nods and exits the room slowly making her way back to the library.
Twilight has supper with her brother and cadence before retiring early to her bed. She lays down lying awake for hours unable to get comfortable, as if something is missing. She turns on her side looking over where Trixie would be reaching out to feel the cold sheets next to her. “What are you thinking?” She whispers into the night before forcing herself to sleep.
