Twilight found a strange shiny orb, and decided to study it. When she ran a magical scan, however, it began to crackle with electricity. Startled, Twilight teleported outside, to find that moments later her library was gone, and in its place was a strange circluar object, pulling her toward it.

Across town, five ponies saw Twilight's house go up in a flash, and run to see if she's alright. They get one glimpse of her before she is swallowed up. Feeling desperate for their friend, they jump in too.

Just a note, I started writing this before season 3 came out, so everything before season 3 is canon.
