“History of music , well that’s a new one for me” Twilight spoke as she lifted the book of its shelf, Twilight had been reading all the books on music she could find in the library for the past couple of days after her friend’s little visit
“alright let’s see where it is, metal, metal, aha metal page 70.” Twilight mumbled while searching the index of the book. When twilight reached page 70 she was amazed by its short explanation, “(heavy) metal is a music genre of the late 60’s and early 70’s of the past century and involves a large amount of guitar playing throughout the songs. The songs themselves often have different subjects, though most of them being dark themed there is also room for sex, mythology and philosophy although some of them being more used in different sub-genres, most of them are likely to be heard of. Popular metal bands are: Iron maiden, Metallica, Megadeath, Möterhead.”
When Twilight finished the rest of the part about metal she put the book back on its shelf and started to wonder where her friend had heard this music, and how she even knew about its existence, it was after all an old style left behind by a civilization she didn’t even know. She decided for herself she would visit her friend the next day because she needed to know how her friend learnt of it.
The next morning thing’s started up as slow as always with spike trying to sleep and twilight trying to wake him up, something that became much more difficult after him entering puberty or at least the dragon equivalent of it. After about a full hour of waking up spike twilight gave up and went downstairs to make herself some breakfast, strangely after she had made breakfast spike was already downstairs and waiting, “well, some things will never change i guess” twilight thought to herself. After breakfast, twilight cleaned the kitchen and asked spike to keep an eye out on the library while she was gone.
“yeah like anything will happen, but because you asked I’ll do it.” He replied.
Around eleven twilight started her walk over to her friends place, it was not that far and she could use the exercise since her main job only involved sitting and reading. About halfway there twilight ran into rarity and the two mares started to talk as they would usually do.
“so that’s basically it” rarity concluded her story. “but darling if you don’t mind me asking, where are you off to? Because you seem pretty rushed” rarity said.
“oh you know, just taking a little break of studies to go outside for a change” twilight lied.
“well then I won’t bother you any longer” rarity said. They quickly wished each other a good day and left.
After the encounter with rarity twilight tried to keep low profile even though she knew it wasn’t necessary, she just wanted to get there without anypony following her. After about 15 minutes she arrived at her destination, fluttershy’s cottage.
Twilight walked up to the cottage and knocked on the door. As the door opened twilight stood in front of her friend fluttershy.
“Oh hey twilight I wasn’t expecting to see you this afternoon.” Fluttershy spoke.
“Well after your little visit yesterday I started to search for some info about this “metal” music you told me about and I discovered that it was created by a unknown civilization, so I started to wonder how you even know about it? And I started wondering if you could tell me more about it.” Twilight told her.
“Oh uhm well it’s actually not entirely true, the music isn’t from a unknown civilization it’s actually just ponies being all mystical to confuse people.” Fluttershy said. “But please come in and then I’ll explain it some more, I don’t want other ponies to know anything about this yet.”
After that twilight entered the cottage and took place on fluttershy’s sofa. After some time fluttershy came out of the kitchen with some tea for her and twilight. After they both had their cups she took her seat on the other side of the sofa and made herself comfortable.
“So you had a few questions about metal you said?” fluttershy asked.
“Well basically I couldn’t find any information about the entire genre, it’s like it’s not even there, so I thought to visit you and ask my question’s since you seem to know a lot about it.” Twilight said
“Well to be honest twilight most ponies don’t want others to know about it because they don’t want them to be scared or angry about it.” fluttershy explained.
“Why would somepony be angry or scared by it?” twilight asked. “It’s not like ponies are going to act all different just because of their music interest” she said
“Well that’s actually not entirely true some ponies actually do act differently, most only at concerts or performances, but some change their appearance and attitude all the way around.” She explained.
“But why?”twilight asked.
“Because they don’t want to hide themselves any longer, they want to be different from who they are now and want the space to do so.” She quickly told twilight.
“How come you know why some ponies want to change themselves so bad?”twilight asked
“Because....Because I......uhm...well.” she muttered.
Because you what? I didn’t get that fluttershy.” twilight said.
“Because I want to change.” she quickly said.
“ You want what now?” twilight asked.
“I want to change.” fluttershy said more calm now.
“you? You want to change? Why in celestia’s good name would you want to change?” twilight responded.
“Well, I just don’t want to be that little scared filly anymore. I want to break free from that identity, I want to be free, that’s basically it” she told twilight with a voice speaking passionately.
“Does anypony know about this? Or am I the only one, Because this is kind of a big thing” twilight spoke
“you are the only one outside of my band to know” fluttershy said
“wait what? You have a Band?” twilight asked confused
“Well yeah kind of actually. We usually meet outside of ponyville so that’s why I am gone sometimes.” She explained. “but you wouldn’t recognize me when we are together. I am kind of meanie when we meet up. but I’m not to mean of course, well at least that’s what I hope. That and I wear my band outfit.”
“Your band outfit?” twilight asked.
“yes, I wear it when we perform or practise” fluttershy said.
“You actually perform with your band? Where? And what is your role in all of it?”twilight asked in rapid succession.
“To answer your questions, yes we do perform, we perform in bars and at concerts sometimes, and I’m the lead vocalist of the group.” Fluttershy answered. “Would you maybe want to come to a performance once?” she asked.
“Uhm....okay, but you’ll have to inform me in time so I can make room in my schedule for it.” Twilight hesitantly responded.
“Okay then I’ll give you the detail’s later.” Fluttershy said.
After some more questions and tea it was time for twilight to head back home.
When she arrived she was pretty excited, so spike asked what it was she was so excited for
“Let’s say I’m going to a see a new band, and I really want to hear them play.” Twilight responded teasingly.
“Well whatever, as long as I don’t have to go anywhere I’m fine with it.” Spike said cutting of the conversation.
“Ugh.., Fine I’ll leave you alone then” twilight said annoyed. But what twilight didn’t know was that nothing was going to be as exciting for her as this, her first metal concert.

A couple of weeks have passed since Twilight went to visit Fluttershy. In this time Twilight had made some preparations and did some more research, since the concert would be in two days.
“Spike!?.... Spike!? Spike where are you. I need you to send a letter to princess Celestia for me!” Twilight jelled.
“I’m upstairs Twilight!” he jelled back “But can’t it wait until later?” he asked.
“No it can’t I’ll be gone from tomorrow morning until Sunday evening remember?” Twilight said while climbing the stairs.
“Oh… right, I forgot. But did you remember me going away for a couple of days?” spike asked in return.
“Wait what? When did you tell me that?” Twilight asked.
“Remember last Monday? I told you during dinner.” Spike told her.
“If you told me last Monday then why can’t I remember it?” Twilight asked.
“Maybe because you were reading that book on Starswirl again?” Spike asked.
“Oh right I was reading his autobiography, that I can remember. Well maybe I just didn’t listen when you told me” Twilight said.
“Wouldn’t be the first time you didn’t notice something I said” Spike added.
“Well sorry then but you know I’m busy most of the time.” Twilight said.
“Yeah yeah yeah. I know, I know” spike said “It’s just annoying not being able to talk to you okay?”
“I guess I could listen a little more to what you say.” Twilight spoke in her apologetic voice.
After that the both of them went downstairs and had dinner, after that Spike finished packing his bag and said goodbye to Twilight.
That night Twilight couldn’t get to sleep as she kept thinking about everything that could go wrong tomorrow, but after about an hour or two she finally fell asleep.
That morning Twilight woke up early, she decided that she would get out before she fell asleep again, something she didn’t like but she knew would happen. So she got up and went downstairs, straight into the kitchen to make breakfast and coffee, something that Twilight couldn’t live without.
After her breakfast she went outside and took a little walk before heading over to the train station, where she had to wait on her train due to delay.
After the train had finally arrived Twilight got on and found herself a seat. She felt nervous , this was her first time going to Canterlot without Celestia ,or anypony else for that matter, knowing. Well except maybe Fluttershy, but it still felt kind of wrong.
After the train ride Twilight got out and went straight to her hotel, it would be the first time she wouldn’t be in the castle while visiting the city. So after she had checked in she decided to take a walk through this part of the city. although she had lived in Canterlot, she didn’t know any of these places due to never really going out. But she was happy to be there now, she didn’t know why but she was excited.
After her little trip she decided that she would try and find Fluttershy to discuss the last parts before the concert tomorrow evening. Twilight knew in which hotel Fluttershy was staying, but when she arrived at the hotel Fluttershy wasn’t there. Twilight was surprised when the pony at the desk told her she had left a couple of hours ago. Twilight didn’t know what to do since she didn’t expect Fluttershy to be out in the city.
So now having nothing to go to, and nothing to do, she decided to go to her hotel and read some books she had brought with her. But when she got to the hotel she stayed at, she thought to herself that maybe reading wasn’t the only thing she could do. She thought about it and came to the conclusion that she had to go out and hit the town as well.
Whilst on her way outside the pony at the front desk waved her over.
“Miss Twilight?” he asked “This was given to me for when you returned” he spoke while handing over a letter to Twilight.
“For me?” she asked as she took the letter. “Do you know who gave this to you?”
“Sorry miss Sparkle but I couldn’t see the ponies face” he apologized.
Twilight went to sit in the lobby as she opened the letter.
“Dear Twilight Sparkle
It has become clear to me that we both are in this fine city without you knowing about my info on that. For this reason and some other minor details I would like to meet you in The Beer Barrel, a bar not that far from your hotel
Kind regard’s.
A friend”
Twilight read the letter a couple of times before deciding she would go there. But due to her not knowing this district very well, she decided to ask the pony at the front desk.
After walking for about twenty minutes she arrived at the small bar, which looked kind of neglected. Once inside however it didn’t look that bad, your classic old bar for what Twilight could tell. A big bar and some small tables and a couple of couches along the wall.
At the bar Twilight spotted only one figure, hooded just like the pony at the hotel had said. Twilight decided to walk up to him but stopped dead in her tracks as she saw who it was
“Uhm….hello? Wait is that really you or am I imagining this?” Twilight asked suddenly shocked.
“No it is me, are you surprised or just freaked out?” The cloaked pony asked in return.
“Well I certainly wasn’t expecting to see you so I’m kind of going to freak out but probably later and when I’m alone.” Twilight answered dry
“well in that case I will keep things short. I know why you’re here and I just want to tell you to have fun, don’t think too much it will drive you crazy, okay?” the hooded mare spoke.
“I’ll try and remember that, and by the way since when did you pick up smoking? You of all ponies should know the danger of it, and set the good example.” Twilight spoke confused as some smoke came from under the hood
“Twilight dear, don’t get me wrong but it’s sometimes a little stressful to rule an entire country with only two of us, so don’t get to worked up about it. Plus I am not that addicted to it.” came the answer
“well ok than. But still I’m kind of shocked to see my mentor, who shouldn’t even know I’m here, is smoking.” Twilight spoke
“Twilight as your mentor it’s my task to know where you are, plus you could have just asked to stay at our place. You know we own several houses in the city.” The mare spoke
“yeah but I didn’t want to bother you with it okay? I wanted some time away from that always being watched. You of all should understand that.” Twilight told her mentor
“Alright, Alright don’t make such a big deal out of it, if you want it I’ll leave you alone for now. But you’re welcome to join me in some drinking here, just as friends.” Her mentor spoke.
“Well it would be a shame to go out and return so early” Twilight admitted “sure I’ll share a few drinks with you” Twilight finally answered.
And so Twilight ended up doing something she would have never thought she would do. Going out and drinking, and for that matter she would have never ever thought Celestia would have joined her. But in the end she had a fun night, although she didn’t remember much the next day. Except that she felt terrible.
