I stared up at the sky, a gentle breeze shifting my black and white mane as I watched the weather team finish up for the day. The sky was cloudless, allowing Celestia's bright sun to warm my back. I gave my wings a shake, and turned around, trotting in the direction of Ponyville.
As I entered town, ponies bustled around me, buying various goods from shops and talking among themselves. I walked alone, as always, staring at my turquoise hooves as I did so. Lifting my head, I saw a bright orange unicorn talking with the local librarian a few yards away. Excitement overwhelmed me, and I broke into a full gallop, unfurling my wings. With a powerful flap, I was airborne and flying. I did few circles, and tucked myself into a cloud, waiting to strike at the optimal moment. With a nod at the lavender unicorn, my victim trotted back towards the center of town. I waited until he was under me to push through said cloud, bringing the unicorn into a full-on airborne tackle hug of sorts.
"Aah!" he exclaimed as we rolled for a bit. Coming to a slow stop on some soft grass, I looked down on him. The unicorns mane brightened significantly, and he chuckled.
"Dammit Feather. Get off me." he said, suppressing a laugh. I rolled my eyes, and stared down at him teasingly.
"Oh come on Pyrus. You know you like it~" I teased. His orange cheeks turned to a shade of red as he blushed, and I laughed a little. He looked up at me, bright green eyes begging to be let go.
"Please Feathy?" he whined, using my nickname. I groaned, and stepped off of him. When he stood, Pyrus looked at me, a caring look reflecting in his eyes. Pulling me into a hug, he nibbled on my ear, sending shivers down my body.
"I have to go some things, but how about tonight we meet in the usual place?" he whispered. I nodded, blushing, and he pulled away.
"See you then." Pyrus said, and trotted off towards town.
"Yeah...see you then..." I murmured, still blushing from what he had said.

I trotted through the trees, emerging at a beautiful lakeside. Luna's stars flickered in the water, and I let my wings out with a sigh. I pushed off my hind legs, and glided over the water with ease, feeling the spray against my stripped tail. I turned around sharply, and flew back to the shore. Landing, I walked over to an old fire pit, and took a seat nearby, taking in the scenery. The lake was medium sized, meaning I could easily fly straight across to the other shoreline in a matter of minutes. The treeline encircled the small clearing the lake was held in, and the clearing offered a brilliant view of the starry sky above. I looked up, and quickly picked out a few constellations by memory; Orion, Leo, Cancer, and the Big Dipper.
"Hey." a soft voice said, interrupting my fantasy. I turned to see Pyrus walking towards me, his horn emanating a soft orange glow as he levitated some firewood behind him. I smiled dorkishly.
"Hi." I replied, and he set the wood into the fire pit. I could tell it took a bit of focusing, but the unicorn managed to start a small fire. Pyrus sat next to me as I tucked my hooves under my chest. He looked up, and smiled.
"It seems your old mentor has done well tonight." he said, and I cringed a little. Not even a year ago, I had been Luna's apprentice, but due to some royal...complications, my studies with her were revoked, and my magic taken away. She still let me have my feather though. The shimmering magpie's feather hung in my mane hung limply now, no life behind it.
Pyrus noted me reaction and laid his tail across my flank.
"Sorry...I didn't mean to bring that up...." he said, and I sighed, stretching my hooves out in front of me into a more comfortable position.
"It's ok just...please don't mention that again alright?" I said, holding back my tears. He nodded silently, and laid next to me, front hooves in front of him. Without hesitation, I nuzzled his neck.
"It's good to have you back from Canterlot....I missed you..." I whispered. He nuzzled my mane weakly.
"I missed you too..." he murmured, and I snuggled into him, closing my eyes.
We sat there snuggling for a good minute or two, just enjoying each others company by the fire, until I felt Pyrus stir next to me. Quickly I sat up, opening my eyes. He chuckled.
"I was just adding more wood to the fire. Calm down." he soothed. I shifted my front hooves, and laid back next to him.
"Sorry..." I apologized, and he kissed me briefly before I snuggled into his side once more.
We laid there for a good while, until I opened my eyes to see the fire dimming. Looking at Pyrus, I saw he was drifting off to sleep. Smiling, I nudged him playfully. His eyes flickered open, and I stood. He groggily levitated a small bucket we always kept nearby, filled it with lake water, and dumped it onto the fire, making it sizzle out. He stood, and almost fell into me, only barely catching himself before he did. I watched him carefully.
"We need to head back to town..." I said, and he nodded. I noticed he was clearly in no shape to walk, so I was about to offer to fly us home when he pulled me into a hug and charged his horn with energy. I closed my eyes, and felt a wind whip at my mane. When I opened them, we were standing in our bedroom in Ponyville. I smiled, and trotted over to my side of the bed, pulling the navy-blue covers aside to get in. Pyrus was mirroring me on his side, and we climbed in. He wrapped his hooves around me and pulled me close, pulling the blankets over us with his magic. I reached up and kissed him softly.
"Goodnight." I said.
"Goodnight." He echoed as I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.

I felt something shift next to me and snapped open my eyes to see Pyrus fighting to go back to sleep. Silently as I could, I nudged him with my wing under the covers.
"Morning sugarcube." I said softly, and his green eyes flickered open at the pet name I practically stole from Applejack to use for him.
"Morning..." he groggily replied, and his hoof reached out and gently touched my cheek. I looked out the window behind him, and noticed that Tia's sun had already risen beyond the window, signaling I was late for my apprenticeship.
Again.
I snapped out of bed, brushed my mane briefly, and stepped towards the door. Looking back at the stunned unicorn I had left alone in the bed, I smirked.
"Sorry hun, but I'm late again. I have to hurry if I don't want to be killed by Vinyl." I joked, and trotted out the door of the room, not even saying goodbye.
Skipping the kitchen, I pushed the front door open, and walked out into the sun. I kicked the door shut with a hind hoof, and started to fly as fast as I could towards the other end of town to the radio station. I landed in front of the doors, and walked inside. The receptionist, a pale-green earth pony mare with a yellow and black mane looked at me.
"Good morning, Feather." she greeted me as I started my walk down the dark green hallway behind her.
"Morning Moonlit." I called behind me, and stopped at a dark blue door. Pushing my way in, I noticed that Vinyl was taking a break. The DJ looked at me over her shades, an eyebrow raised.
"Feather, you're late. Again." she said. I slunk under my mane slightly.
"Sorry Vinyl-"
"No time for sorry's Missy!" the unicorn mare snapped, and trotted over to me angrily, eyes flaring. She pushed her nose up against mine.
"Feather Note, do you know how many ponies applied for your position? Do you know that any one of them would gladly take your place here?!" she yelled. My wings shivered, but I nodded.
"If you don't want this position, just tell me and I can easily call Twisted Echo or Bright Staccato over to take it." she said, clearly calming down.
"I-I want the position...." I stammered.
"Good. Then start proving it to me by coming in ON TIME instead of sleeping with your coltfriend." she said, winked, and went back into the recording room, leaving me by myself to DJ the radio station. I sighed, and took my position.
It was gonna be a long day.

After work, I went to clock out as usual, when I heard Vinyl talking with Moonlit Melody, the receptionist. I paused outisde the office to eavesdrop for a bit.
"How's she doing, Vinyl?" I heard Moonlit ask.
"I think Legato's not gonna like her, and even if he does, you know what he does with the new fillies..." Vinyls voice drifted off. I heard Moonlit make a tut-tut-tut before replying.
"Poor Feather. If she only knew..."
"I know..."
Having enough of them talking about me, I stomped my hooves a few times and trotted in. Pushing my numbers in, I clocked out with little word from either of my fellow DJ's. As I walked out of the studio, I couldn't help but think about who they had been talking about. Who WAS the "Legato" character? What did he do with the new fillies that came in?
Suddenly, I felt myself fall over as a dark stallion layed nearby, clearly dizzy. I bolted up, and walked over to him.
"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! Are you ok?" I asked the unicorn. He shook his head and stood, levitating his saddlebag back on his back.
Wait a second....black coat, dark blue mane, green eyes......
"Excuse me sir, but whats your name?" I asked cautiously as the stallion shook his head.
"Call me Legato Song. Whats yours?" he grumbled.
"Feather Note." I said, and he looked at me, recognition flickering in his eyes. Legato started circling me, and examined me closely, making me feel pretty uncomfortable.
"So you must be the new trainee at the studio...." he said, and stood next to me. He ran a hoof along my feathers, and I took a weary step back, only to feel his hoof around me.
"I have something to show you regarding your work. Follow me." he said, and I wearily followed him.
Legato led me into a dark alley between the studio and a store called Lyrical Chord's Music Haven. We walked to the back of the alley, and Legato set his saddle bags down, only levitating a rope from it. He tied it around my wings, and I tensed up to fight.
Taking me by surprise though, Legato pushed me up against the building with his hooves. I squirmed.
"What do you want?!" I cried, and he placed his hoof over my mouth to quiet me.
"Shush Feather Note my dear. I'm only going to orientate you to your full-time job." he said, and kissed me.

Using all my strength in my hooves, I pushed the stallion aside and took off at a dead gallop towards town.
"You're not going anywhere!" I heard him yell as he ran behind me, sending my adrenaline through the roof. I pushed myself harder as ponies stared on, not daring to do anything. As I ran towards home, I noticed Roseluck and Daisy pushing a cart of flowers in front of me. Pausing briefly, only to hear Legato advancing, I slid under it, catching my fur a bit on the bottom of the cart. I heard Legato grumble in frustration behind me, and I turned towards home. Slowing to an easy canter, a bright flash of dark green interrupted me. I stopped as the black unicorn appeared in front of me, and turned tail back down the other side of the street into a dark alley on the other side.
"You can't get away!" he yelled, and I turned and started tugging on the rope to let my wings free. Once I had them free, I was gone. Legato couldn't get me in the air.
Stupid me wasn't paying attention to where I was going, so I didn't see the rock in front of me.
Wham. Next thing I knew I was on the ground, Legato standing over me where I tripped.
"Stupid filly, I've got you now." he said, and licked his lips creepily.
"Help!" I shrieked, and he covered my mouth with his hoof again.
"For Celestia's sake would you be quiet!" he said annoyingly, and I saw a flash of orange out of the corner of my eye. A bright orange unicorn came out of seemingly nowhere, throwing himself into Legato.
Pyrus! I though happily as Legato reached with a free hoof and merely pushed Pyrus away. The smaller unicorn stood, shook his head, and threw himself into the larger unicorn, taking Legato down this time. I got up and pulled my wings free. Pyrus jumped from where he had been fighting Legato to in front of me, in a defensive stance, horn ignited with magic.
"Leave her alone!" he snarled, and I saw his tail swish angrily.
"She's mine!" Legato growled and lept at Pyrus. The orange unicorn shot a beam of fiery energy from his horn, sending Legato flying backwards. Pyrus looked back at me, green eyes flickering with protectiveness.
"Run." he said, and I nodded. Both of us took off while Legato struggled to stand. I looked behind us to see the black unicorn galloping after us. I faced forward, and ran, easily keeping pace with Pyrus.
"He's following us!" I yelled over the wind.
"I figured as much. Follow me." He yelled back, and turned towards Everfree Forest. It hit me then. Anypony with even a tiny bit of sense wouldn't follow somepony into the Forest. Trusting Pyrus, we ran a bit faster, hearing Legato advancing on us. I looked over my shoulder to see him close now, and looked in front of me to see the Everfree Forest approaching rapidly. Using my last burst of energy, I pushed myself into the dark forest, Pyrus close behind me. As we slowed to a walk, I heard a yell of agony from Legato far behind us.
"I'll get you eventually Feather Note!"

"P-Pyrus?" I asked wearily as I approached the limp figure. His breathing was shallow, and Pyrus lifted his head slighty.
"Feather..." he whispered, and his head fell on the ground again.
"Pyrus!" I yelled, and ran over to his side quickly. I nuzzled him, and saw his open his eyes weakly.
"Feather..." he said again, and I placed a hoof over his mouth.
"Save your strength." I whispered, and lept over him, curling around his body. Nuzzling him once more, I placed a wing across Pyrus and looked out over the river.
"Feather...if I go....I'm sorry...." he coughed weakly. I nuzzled him.
"You'll be ok, Pyrus. Twilight'll fix you up when she gets here." I comforted, knowing I was probably lying to him. My mind drifted away from that possibility to something else. What in Celestia's name had I been thinking?! I could've gotten us both killed instead of just suffering with a broken wing and Pyrus dying...
Thats when I felt my wing stop moving.
Quickly, I looked down at my side. The orange unicorn was still, his breathing no longer existent. Panic filled my body and I nudged him.
"Pyrus?" I asked, and didn't get a response.
No. No no no. I cant lose him. was my first thought.
"Pyrus! Please wake up!" I nudged him again.
"You gotta wake up!" With no response except his limp mane flickering in the gentle breeze, I felt tears form at my eyes. Every memory of the past few months flashed before my eyes, sending my heart and head spinning at what I longed for. Everything came flooding back; the day we met, talking, walking, spending time together, our first kiss....and one long text message of words that had told me everything I had ever needed to know repeated itself in my mind....
I've been waiting...hoping....waiting for the perfect moment to say this. I've always kinda wanted the situation to be perfect, and for it to happen when we're together, but its occurred to me that perfection isn't gonna just pop into existance. Plus, total perfection is boring. Who wants to be perfect?
It's been eating, burning me from the inside out holding this in. I can't wait any long. Perfection can wait.
I...I love you...
"Pyrus no....Please no...." I sobbed, watching tears fall from my eyes onto his fur. Lifting my head to the sky, I felt the wave of grief shatter me. I looked back down and weakly nuzzled his fur.
"You...you cant leave me....you said...you promised...." I sobbed. I held his mane with a hoof. It was going to orange. All of it, returning to the original color before his incident.
Thats when it hit me like a train.
Pyrus...my love, my light...was gone.
I cried like I have never cried before, sending tears down his fur. I pulled Pyrus closer, and cried into his fur.
"Pyrus...why..." I sobbed. His last few moments flashed before me again; me trying t shut him up to save his strength, when all he wanted to do was say it one last time. I kissed his cheek gently, and felt myself drift to sleep. Before I submitted myself to Luna's grasp, I said it one last time.
"I love you..."
~~~
I awoke to six familier voices around me.
"Is...is he dead?"
"I think so, but we need to get her out of here. Dash and AJ can you handle that?"
"Sure thing."
"Gotcha Twi." I felt my body being lifted and snapped open my eyes. The Elements of Harmony stood in a circle around Pyrus as Rainbow and Applejack carried me to a royal carriage.
"Pyrus..." I whispered, and felt tears find their way back to my eyes. My body was lifted into the carriage and I settled down, burying my face in my hooves. Applejack, whispered something to Rainbow, and climbed in next to me. The orange mare pulled me into a hug as I cried.
"It'll be ok sugarcube." she said.
"How can it be?! He's dead AJ. Dead..." I sobbed again, and the mare flicked her ear.
"Ah'm sure the Princesses will figure out a way to bring him back. Princess Cadence said that you two had a strong love that rivaled hers and Shinin's. Ah doubt she'll let it die like this." Applejack said, and broke from the hug. I wiped my eye with a hoof, and nodded.
"I hope so..." I replied as Pinkie and Rarity jumped into the carriage with us.
"To Canterlot boys. The others will meet us there." Rarity said, and the pegasus guards took off, leaving with me the image of Fluttershy and Rainbow fixing Pyrus's body onto Twilight's back for travel.
