Chapter 3 - Frost Nip

There was no light and all I could see was darkness.

“Flitter?” came the whisper of Cloudchaser, “Flitter?”

“What?” I asked the darkness, scared.

“Flitter?”

“Cloudchaser is that you?” I asked, “CC?”

Panic began to seep into my veins. It was dark, an unnatural dark but there was nopony to be seen, and for that matter there was nothing to be seen, not even my own hoof.

“Cloudchaser?” My voice echoed through the darkness but nopony answered.  “Cloudchaser?” I roared panicing, “CC? Anypony? Where am I?”

Where am I… Where am I… Where am I…

I began to hyperventilate; this odd loneliness was completely unnatural. Was this what it felt like to be completely segregated from everything? If I call for Cloudchaser she’s there. Not this time….

“CLOUDCHASER!?” I roared at the top of my lungs.

Her name echoed four times and I that’s when I cracked. Complete helplessness flooded me and I threw myself into the air in sheer panic and I flew as fast as I could to escape the darkness -- the loneliness. I began to cry as I flew, and even that felt unnatural, no wind whistled in my ears and it was still completely quite…

“Flitter?  Flitter?  Are you okay?”

I sat up fast, breathing heavily with a cold sweat on my brow, natural sound had been restored. “Cloudchaser- Cloudchaser?” I gasped quickly, “Oh Celestia,” I cried shaking. Cloudchaser put a hoof around me concerned. “I-I” I couldn’t help hyperventilating. “CC…”

“Shh, I’m here Flitter,” Cloudchaser whispered, placing her other hoof on the back of my head and pulling it to her chest.

I continued to shake uncontrollably despite my warm, elder sister next to me. My panic was subsiding but my body felt numb and sore. “I’m so c-cold,” I whispered through my cold numb lips.

Cloudchaser placed her hoof on my forehead. Cloudchaser pulled me closer to her, allowing me to take her heat. “You’re stone cold Flitter,” Cloudchaser sighed.

“We need t-to get out of here,” I whispered. “I don’t want to f-freeze in here Cloudchaser.”

“We’ll move soon Flitter,” Cloudchaser said softly. “We’ll have to try and walk back to Ponyville though.”

I nodded even though I didn’t know what I was nodding too.

Together we waited for the sun’s orange glow to penetrate the cave we were bunkered in. Once the sun had finally made its appearance, Cloudchaser stood up. “We had better get going,” Cloudchaser said weakly. “We want to make the most of the day.”

I got unsteadily to my hooves and I followed her out of the cave into the weak sunlight. The snow was thick from the blizzard the night before and it was hard to traverse. I didn’t take long and I lost most of the feeling to my hooves from the cold. “C-Cloudchaser, it’s t-too far,” I said coming to a stop after an hour of walking. My hooves were wet and freezing, I couldn’t stop shivering and my lips felt horribly numb, not to mention my wings that felt heavy as lead with the accumulated ice. “I’m so cold,” I gasped. “I’m not sure how long I can go.”

“C’mon Flitter, we can’t stop now,” Cloudchaser said from several meters ahead. “We still have a long way to go.”

“Okay,” I said through chattering teeth powering up the hill with my aching and numb legs.

As the day progressed the sun began to reflect its bright rays on the white snow, which produced a glare, that made seeing unbearable and it provided no additional warmth. I squinted ahead and all there was, was tall dead grass and trees poking through the snow. “Do you even k-know where w-we are CC?” I chattered.

“We are- umm,” she stammered. “I’m pretty sure we’re near the Everfree Forest.”

“S-So we’re lost?” I asked weakly, trying to not sound angry.

“No, we’re fine, we just need to find the forest and then follow it,” Cloudchaser said confidently. “I just don’t know how far it is.”

“Why don’t you fly up and see then?” I asked her.

Cloudchaser held her wings out then retracted them. “I’m not flying anywhere like this,” she sighed, “They’re still frosty and heavy.”

After a further hour of walking, I began to lag behind Cloudchaser, there were a few times where she would shout out to hurry up, but I kept going and going until…

Poof

My hooves gave out from under me, too cold and too sore to make another step and my body felt drained, dehydrated, and hungry.

“Flitter?” Cloudchaser shouted from ahead. I raised a shaky forehoof for Cloudchaser to recognize me.  I looked up from the snow and she was galloping as fast as she could. “Flitter, c’mon we need to go.”

I got back up and my head began to spin. “I d-don’t k-know CC,” I cried. “I’m… f-feeling l-light headed, I feel…” but then I forgot what I was going to say.

Cloudchaser knelt down and said, “I’m going to carry you; just hop on my back.”

I clumsily clambered onto my sister’s back and she had to reposition my hooves to prevent me falling back onto the ground. “Least the jacket keeps my back warmer,” she said optimistically.

I didn’t really listen to what she was saying. I felt too confused, cold, hungry and thirsty to process whatever she just said to me.

“We’ll get there, okay Fliter?” Cloudchaser said.

“Uhuh,” I said automatically.

Cloudchaser trudged through the snow, my head resting on her icy mane. I wanted to sleep but the numbness was too much. My head span too much and sleep would be outright dangerous given how cold I was.

Movement suddenly stopped as Cloudchaser came to a halt. I peeked around her side and there appeared to be movement ahead. “Excuse me!” Cloudchaser called out, “Hello?”

The figure stopped moving and Cloudchaser broke into a gallop. I threw my forehooves around her neck to prevent being unseated. “Hello?”Cloudchaser called out again.

The pony that Cloudchaser was calling to was wearing a hood and thick brown clothing. She was quite tall and rather scary looking -- she was pulling a small sled with a white linen covering.

“How do you do,” the pony said in a very exotic accent. The pony drew her hood back; what I thought was a pony was actually a Zebra.

“You got to help me,” Cloudchaser shouted panicking. “My sister fell into a lake and now she’s really cold and I can’t get her back to Ponyville. Please, you have to help me.”

“Calm down young one,” the Zebra said calmly. “Let me take a look at your sister.”

The zebra touched my stone cold forehead; she extended my icy wing and felt the skin at the joint. Finally her head appeared in my vision. “What is your name?”

“Flitter,” I said weakly. “I’m cold,” I finished stupidly.

“Yes, you are,” she agreed.

“What’s your name?” I asked noting that she had not introduced herself.

“My name is Zecora ,” she replied, “You need treatment young one.” She thought for a quick moment her hoof at her chin before adding, “I have just the brew that’ll do.”

Zecora began to rummage through her supplies before pulling out two vials of potions and a goblet. She poured the brew and mixed it carefully. When the potion began to steam she stopped and gave the goblet to me, “Drink it all up in one gulp.”

I drank the liquid in one gulp and gagged. It was warm and tasted like liquid rubber. “Gross,” I coughed. I felt warmth spread to my limbs. After a few seconds I began to feel dizzy and sick.

“Flitter? Are you okay?” Cloudchaser asked, a hoof on my shoulders.

Before I could answer, I fell away into darkness, as if I was sucked down a huge pipe.

Beep… Beep… Beep

I felt warm and cozy in a soft bed; I just wanted to lie here forever… My eyes flicked open, memories of the cold flooding back. I realised that I was in a hospital bed with the curtains drawn. I looked to my right and Cloudchaser sat slumped in the chair asleep, a magazine lying flat on the floor at her hindhooves. I wasn’t aware of the time or how long I had been out for, it made me wonder where mum and dad were. Surely if I was in hospital they would be here?

“CC,” I whispered. “Cloudchaser?”

Cloudchaser stirred, she rubbed her eye with a forehoof. “You’re awake.” She said groggily. Cloudchaser got up and hugged me. “I was so worried, I thought Zecora’s potion had killed you or something.” Cloudchaser placed her forehooves on my cheeks and kissed me fully on the lips.

“Where’re Mum and Dad?” I asked, “Thought they’d be here?”

Cloudchaser shook her head. “They went home to bed. You’ve been out for three days. They were worried of course.” Cloudchaser winced. “I got in so much trouble,” she added. “But I don’t care. I know it’s my fault already and you here is bad enough anyway. I’m just so glad that you’re okay.”

“I am too,” I said quietly. “Uhh, what’s the time?” I added curiously.

Cloudchaser poked her head through the curtain. “It’s eleven-thirty pm.”

“Oh, it’s quite late,” I sighed. “What time will mum and dad be back?”

“Around 7,” Cloudchaser answered. “I’ll head home around 12 and let them know you’re awake in the morning.”

“What happened after I passed out?” I asked. “How did I get here?”

“Weeeell…” Cloudchaser began. “I panicked. I checked you over to make sure you had a heartbeat and you were breathing and that’s when Zecora said that the potion was supposed to do that.” Cloudchaser heaved a sigh. “I got angry with her. I told her that she should have told us that before she gave you the potion. She didn’t really say much but we placed you on her sled and ensuring that you were covered we walked to Ponyville Hospital. I was taken in too for a short moment and the hospital called mum and dad.” Cloudchaser shuddered for a moment before continuing. “I told them what happened and they… exploded. They pretty much told me that I was lucky that you weren’t dead. They do have a point, but in the hospital? Anyway, they’ve been in and out of hospital to see you -- they also took a day off work.”

“Oh,” I said. “It was kind of my fault,” I sighed. “I mean-“

“No it wasn’t Flitter,” Cloudchaser cut in. “It’s mine. Anyway I’ll see you in the morning Flitter,” she said sleepily “Don’t beat yourself up okay?” Cloudchaser gave me a hug and a kiss and bade me farewell.

I was then left alone in the ward with nothing to do but dwell on what had happened.

*                                        **                        **                      **                                                *

“Flitter, you have visitors,” the nurse said kindly. I looked over to see Mum, Dad, and Cloudchaser. I gave them an awkward smile. Considering that the last time I had come in contact with them I was in danger of being thrown out of the house, this made things rather awkward.

“Flitter,” mum cried placing her hooves around my neck and pulling me into a bone breaking hug.

“Mum, ouch,” I grunted. “I’m okay, really.”

“Oh Flitter, I thought you were going to die; I was so scared,” mum sobbed. “I didn’t mean to get so angry before. I couldn’t think… If I lost you.”

“It’s okay, really,” I assured.

Mum nodded and pulled my head to her chest and she held me in place. “Mum?” I asked, however she didn’t answer. I didn’t realize I freaked them out this badly. Once mum released me, dad at least gave me a hug that didn’t threaten to break every bone in my body.

“We really didn’t know what to do if we lost you Flitter,” Dad said sadly. “Your mother and I as well as Cloudchaser love you very much, we just couldn’t think.”

I nodded, feeling as though they were over reacting. “At least I’m okay,” I said weakly. “Sorry for putting you through all that.”

“It’s not your fault Flitter,” Mum said caringly. As she said this however, I noticed that Cloudchaser’s ears flattened and she skulked behind my parents.

“Well, I know not to stand not too close to the edge,” I said trying to take the tension away from Cloudchaser.

“We’re just all glad you’re okay,” Mum said. “We all are.”

I nodded and that’s when the nurse came back and said. “Okay, Flitter needs to eat and get some rest guys.”

“We’ll see you later today Flitter, okay?” Mum said.

I nodded and gave her a final, gentler hug. Dad gave me another hug as well and Cloudchaser moved forwards and gave me a hug as well. “I’ll see you later okay?”

I nodded. “I’ll see you soon CC.”

And that made me wonder. I love Mum and Dad, but I loved Cloudchaser differently. I loved her as my soul mate. But the thought of damaging our relationship with Mum and Dad made me feel sick and confused, because I loved them too. I knew deep in my heart that they would one day figure out our true relationship.
