Chapter #4 Test and placement

“Sir?..Sir I’m going to have to ask you to get up now.”

I cracked my eyes open to see a dark blue Pegasus standing to the side of my bed.  “May I help you?” “Sir you received a royal summon yesterday correct?” “Yes.  I’m going to guess that it’s time to go?”  The blue Pegasus just nodded and walked out.

After noticing that my wing was no longer bandaged I spent a few minutes flexing both of them and loosening them up before I folded them up to where they sat comfortably at my sides.  “Well I believe that I am wanted by royalty.”  I walked, shakily, out, signed out and exited the building to see a small silver chariot pulled by 2 dark blue Pegasi.  “Sir are you ready to depart?” I nodded, stepped onto the chariot and within moments we were airborne.

During the trip I said nothing and just let the two upfront fly their course but as they did so I studied how they moved their wings so that I could learn how to fly eventually.  As I observed their wing movements I noticed that they looked almost identical, they both were a dark blue (not nearly as dark as myself) and wore similar armor give or take a size difference.  But what caught my eye was that they both had an image on their hip, the on one the left was a shield with a crescent moon and the other was a silhouette of what looked like a pair of wings on a white circle.

I wonder how they got those.  Deciding to leave them to their business I told them I simply sat there lost in the thought of my past and all that I did and was good at.

By the time we landed I remembered that I was an athlete, better than awesome at math (Especially mental math) and that I was always reading or I was with…someone.  I never figured out who it was but I loved being around them, however it still bugged me that I couldn’t shake the feeling of something was missing.

“Sir if you could follow me please.” I followed another pony, this one didn’t have wings but it did have the same color coat as the others and the equivalent silver armor.

I followed the guard in question as he lead me through halls filled with murals, ornate suits of armor, and other ponies that were doing something but paid me no attention which I didn’t mind since I hate being the center of attention.

After walking for what seems like forever we arrived at a spiral stair case.  “The princess is waiting for you at the top.” Thank you for bringing me here but I think I can climb the flight without giving you anymore trouble.  The guard bowed and walked off seeming to be more than relieved to not have to climb the monstrous spiral stairs.

Glancing at my wings and then to the great expanse of space inside I decided that now was a good time to try and fly.  “Well here goes nothing.” I unfurled my wings and forced them down and that alone got me about 5 feet into the air but when I tried another flap I crashed into the wall.  “OW!” After recovering from the impact I stood and tried again but this time I tried to imitate the two guards that were pulling the chariot and found myself being pulled forwards.  “This is going to be fun, or I’m going to have to go back to the hospital.”

Standing on my hind legs I lunged into the air and flapped my wings in an attempt to gain altitude.  One flap, so far so good, two flaps, still going, three going faster, and before I knew it I was almost shooting up the tower.

Needless to say if felt amazing, somehow I knew everything that had to do with the air currents and the temperatures through my wings but that was just an added bonus, however there was one problem…I didn’t know how to land.  “Well crud.” I was nearing to top and if I didn’t do something I was going to either go through the roof or hit the ceiling and then fall the total distance I just climbed.  Deciding that neither was a good option I tried to slow down by simply gliding around the tower but I forgot about the stairs.

“WOAH!” *SMACK* well I stopped on the landing but I did so by planting my face in the door.  I’ll look back on this and laugh but as of right now it just hurt and I felt my wings and tail drag behind me as the door opened.  “Ummm Helix? You do realize that you could just knock right?” I said nothing as my face was still in the door; instead I weakly knocked with my fore hoof.  I tried to get out of the door but I didn’t succeed till Luna pulled me out by my tail and all I could mumble as I lay on the ground with all of my appendages sprawled out in different directions was.  “Thanks.” "Well considering that you are late and everypony is waiting on us we are going to have to teleport there." “Wait whe-”

After the blinding sensation went away I saw that we were in a stadium, almost like a coliseum with a roaring crowd.  “Ok Luna, where are we?” “We are at the guard testing and I have gone to the liberty in entering you into the captain event.” “That’s co- you WHAT?!?!?” “Helix by what I have seen is that you are strong and are up for this.” “But I can hardly fly how am I supposed to fight a pony that’s probably stronger, faster and more agile than I am while I’m bumbling around trying to make heads or tails of my new body, I haven’t really used it that much either.” Luna just giggled at my remark.  “Helix I entered you in because if you can beat a rank then you are offered that position.” “Sooo you want me to be a captain?” Luna just nodded and proceeded to watch the match that was taking place in the main arena.

A Pegasus and a regular pony were going all out from what I could tell the Pegasus had metal on his wings and the regular pony had a shield that seemed to be attached to his back.  I didn’t get to see the ending since Luna took me to the weapons room to find a weapon that I could use in battle.

“Let’s see we have swords, hoof blades, shields, mace’s…” “Hey Luna what is that?” I pointed to a decent sized glass case that held what appeared to be a suit of armor.  “That is suit of armor designed for a Pegasus, it has wing blades and the body is completely armored, but it’s quite impractical since no Pegasi have strong enough wings to support it in flight.”  I thought on it for a while but since I needed all of the help I could manage I made my decision.  “If we can extend the wing blades could I use the suit?” Luna thought for a bit but agreed to do it.

Once the wings were extended and I put the flippin thing on it was time for my match with…actually I didn’t know who my opponent was. I stood at the gate waiting to be announced so that it may begin.  Before I was called I found a mirror to look at the new armor that I was now adorned with.  “Dang I look good.” The armor was silver with a clear face plate, it covered my entire body, minus my tail.  I flexed my wings and watched the sharpened leading edge blend effortlessly with the rest of the wings armor and no matter how I moved the armor not only covered all of my body but it also provided unrestricted movement.

“Now the only thing to do is to fly.” I never got to test it since right before I was going to go into the next room for some added space I heard the announcer.  “And for the final battle tonight we have a special captain match.  The Challenger, HELIX!”  The crowd was going nuts as I walked onto the field and was followed by ‘ooo’s and ahhhh’s’ as my armor caught the afternoon light and as I raised my wings, needless to say I was feeling pretty good about this.  ”And your captain of the royal guard, SHINING ARMOR!” When my opponent walked out I was dumbstruck just at his armor.

He was clad in a gold suit or armor that seemed to only cover slightly more than the guard armor that I’ve seen previously.  He also had a sword and that’s what I was worried about for the most part since I had nothing besides my heavy armor.  Considering I was going up against a unicorn I was figuring that I was royally screwed.
