Death in the eye

Previous Chapter

"So how did you get here?" I asked, since I thought now would be the perfect oppurtunity to do so. I had been home and told my parents I would be sleeping over at a friend (yes, I lie a lot) for a few days, and as always they believed me, luckily. This time however it was for a good reason: the hospital had given me special permission to sleep at the hospital (with some help from my new brony friend) since I told them I was unbiologically her guardian (again some help from my brony friend). I was even allowed to have food there! (Third time help from my brony friend. I sure owe him alot now). The reason I did this though was because as fast as she would be fully healed, the government would probably come and take her away because of her being a unicorn or something, so I needed to have a plan.

"To be exact, I can't recall exaxctly how I got here, maybe I hit my head or something. I have no idea." She said.

"Well, why don't you just use your magic?" I asked.

"Well, because when You were gone, I tried to le..." She looked at me, her eyes widening.

"Wait, how do you know I can use magic?!" Woops. I said too much. What should I say? Should I lie? Should I tell the truth? Yeah, I should definitely tell her the truth. Lying to my parents was one thing, but lying to Twilight was another.

"Well, let me put it this way," I looked at her seriously in the big purple things she calls her eyes, "I know all about you, your friends, Ponyville, Equestria. Well, mostly everything. So yes, I know your name, Twilight Sparkle, and I know you can use magic" I said. She looked at me with surprise in her eyes. She opened her mouth as to say something, but I put my hand on her mouth before she could say anything.

"Don't ask me how, please" I pleaded, "I'll tell you another time, but not now."

I didn't want to go through everything about me being a brony and the show and the fandom and all that stuff. Not now atleast.

She looked at me with those big beautiful eyes, and something in her look told me she understood, because she nodded afterwards. I sighed.

"So, why didn't you use your magic to remember?" I asked her, again.

She blinked a few times before answering.

"Well, you see, while you were away, I saw this intersting book lying on the table right in front of my bed. I tried to levitate it here, but my magic isn't working!"

It was clear that she had gotten frustrated by that.

I looked at the table. It was well out of reach for her to grab by hoof, so I went over to it. "The Hunger Games" it read. Ah, memories. I had gotten a copy of this book when I was younger, and I couldn't stop reading it. Took me a week to finish reading it, and I literally cried when I did, until I found out about the sequels. I saved up my money and did chores just to get enough for them, and boy, it was worth it. My favorite books of all time. But now, back to reality.

"Yeah, this book is great" I said, picking it up. "The best, actually." I walked over to her and gave it to her. She eagerly grabbed it with her hooves and tried to open it. She tried flipping the book and changing the pages, but apparently, it...didn't quite work. I mean, she was used to read with magic, so she was not comfortable with hooves. And she was hurt, with that huge cut on her belly. She was getting more and more frustrated with the book. At one point it looked as if she was going to explode or rage quit, so I stepped in.

Grabbing the book, I flipped the pages to the first one and held it in front of her.

Strange. She didn't say thank you, didn't even look at me. Well, until I noticed she was...squinting her eyes? Yes she squinting them on the book. Then her eyes widened and she jerked back so fast I almost jumped out of sheer surprise. Haha, funny. Well, not really, because Twilight started hyperventilating and she looked really, and I mean really, really scared.

"Why...*gasp* can't I...*gasp* see...*gasp* the letters?!" What? What does she mea...you know what, ill ask her instead.

"What do you mean, Twi?" Said and done.

The letters in your book are...blurry. I can't see them clearly no matter how much I squint my eyes." It wasn't really my book, but she was clearly confused, so instead, "I'll read aloud for you".

"What? No! You don't need...I mean, I'm sure I can..."

"You're sure you can what?" I said.

She didn't say anything, just looked at me with a dumbfounded look.

"I'll read aloud for you, and that is final. It's the least I can do for what you've done for me." Yep, no changing my mind. Thank you, mouth, that was very nice of you for once.

Twilight blushed a bit, but nodded. Until she got another one of those surprised looks on her face. It was adorable!

"What did I ever do to you? I mean, considering the events, I'm supposed to owe YOU something, aren't I?" What was she talk...oh, of course. You know what, mouth? I take back everything good I said about you. I clearly can't count on you anymore. So you're only allowed to stay where you are until I can invent another way of communicating.

"Uh, well, that..."

I heard a bell ringing.

"Oh, lunch time! Thank god, I'm starving." That was my extremely puny attempt at avoiding her question. Surprisingly, it worked, as Twi stopped looking at me and looked with anticipation at the door for whatever dish she might get. Much to our (mostly her) dissapointment, the old man with the glorious, and might I add majestic, beard entered the room. I couldn't take it anymore, so I blurted out "SIR! No offense, but you have the most glorious, powerful and majestic beard I have ever seen!" Mouth, you are in soo much trouble right no...

"Why, thank you, young boy." He smiled, or what looked like a smile under that glorious beard. You were lucky this time, mouth.

"But no time for that. Boy, they are coming" he said with his majestic vo...wait, who's coming?

"Who?" I asked.

"The Government." WHAT?! I knew they were coming, but this soon?

"What do we do?" I asked. The bearded man answered.

"Mah boi, it's dangerous to go alone. Take this." He handed me a sword.

"Wha-"

"No no, I was just joking." He chuckled and put the sword away.

"But they are coming, so you should be ready."

"But then...what DO we do?" I asked.

He raised his hands and, looking up, he said:

"By the power of my majestic beard, let these two be..." That was all I heard before everything turned white.

* * * * * *

I'm sure you're expecting us to be catched, taken, shot or killed by the Government right now? Yes, they did all those things.

No, I'm just joking, that's not even close. But what happened was very surprising. I mean, it was like...ah screw it, THAT OLD MAN WITH THE GLORIOUS, MAJESTIC, GORGEOUS, POWERFUL, AWESOME, RARE, COOL AND MAGICAL BEARD JUST RAISED HIS HANDS AND USED HIS BEARD POWER TO TELEPORT US OUT OF TROUBLE!!!....phew. Happy now? oh, sorry. I'm not usually like this, it's just...oh no I'm not gonna start again, end of this talk, I'll just tell you what happened after the beardy magic.

I woke up on the cold ground. At first I didn't see anything, because my face had somehow managed to dig itself down the dirt I was laying. Lifting my head and looking around, I started to absorb my surroundings. Apparently, I had appeared in the back lawn of my own house. Oh, I'm sorry, you thought I was living with my parents? No, I'm not eight anymore, I'm...well, older, but that doesn't matter right now. I was just visiting them for a week, before coming back here.

Standing up, I started looking around, but couldn't find Twilight anymore. I was starting to think it was all a dream, but a bright flash appeared in front of me, blinding my eyes. Then the flash vanished, and I saw Twilight resting on the ground, eyes closed. I ran over to her and went down on one knee, lightly shaking her with my hand.

"Twilight, you can wake up now, it's over." I said in a low voice.

"Mm...ugh, Spike, not now..." She mumbled, eyes still closed

I snickered, and imitating Spikes voice as best as I could, I said "Twilight? You gotta wake up! Someone burnt down the library!"

"Huh, wha...WHAT!?" She stood up faster than a rocket can possibly take off, making me jerk back. I started laughing so hard I fell backwards and rolled  around on the ground, just laughing. I didn't care if I got a bit dirty, I could always wash up later.

Twilight was confused. Well, until she understood the joke.

"Oh, haha, very funny." She said, sarcastically. Almost angrily. She looked really mad. That's not normal. Is she usually this mad about pranks?

"Uh, Twilight? Are you okay?" I asked.

"YES, I'M FINE!" She almost screamed. "Oh, I'm sorry, I just...yes, I'm fine" she said, a bit calmer.

It was getting a bit late, so I decided that we should go inside. Motioning Twilight to follow me, I started walking towards the back door, picking up my keys from my pocket. Usually I leave my doors open. nobody comes around these parts anymore, but you never know what might happen. Plus, I was going to be off for a week, so better take precautions.

Opening the door, I looked behind me, expecting her to be right behind me. However, she didn't seem to have moved more than a few metres from where she was first. She was slowly limping forward.

"Are you sure you're okay, Twilight?" I asked, concern in my voice.

"I'm fine, don't worry about me!" She said, putting up an obviously fake smile. She seemed to be hiding something.

"Oookaaay, ill just go in, and you'll come in too, okay?" I said.

"Oh, uh...yeah, sure!" Another one of those fake smiles. She was definitely hiding something.

"Twi, are you sure you're okay? You can tell me, I will help you no matter what."

"I'm telling you, I'm fine!" She said.

Shrugging my shoulders, I went inside to pour myself a glass of water. With the glass in my hand, I walked to the door to see how much progress Twilight had made. She hadn't made much progress. If I can remember correctly, she haven't even made any progress at all! She was just laying on the ground, on her side, making the bandages that covered her sewed up wound visible. They were completely red, making me raise an eyebrow. Why was she...OH SHIT!!!

Dropping my glass, I dashed to her, while barely hearing the distinctive sound of glass breaking. She was bleeding! I knew she was hiding something! Why didn't she tell me! It's as if she doesn't trust me, after all I've done to save her from certain death. But I'm not blaming her, considering the circumstances. I can't even imagine what she is going through. I really shouldn't have scared her like that...

Getting close enough, I embraced her carefully, then picked her up. She was burning to the touch, and the bandages had started to leak blood, more and more. She was panting heavily with closed eyes as I was running towards the door. Just as I entered the door, the inevitable happened: I slipped. I slipped on the stupid water I threw away before, dropping the filly in the process. She yelped and landed with a thud. Ever had a balloon filled with water, then threw it on the ground so hard it exploded? Well, that's not really what happened.  Instead, imagine that the balloon exploded on one side and lots of water squirted out. Except that the balloon is Twilight, and the water is blood. That's exactly what happened. I got the urge to puke. It looked so disgusting, and half of her was barely visible from all the blood. Trying my best not to release my inner fluids, I did another attempt at picking her up, and luckily, it worked. Running up the stairs to my room, I slowly placed her on the bed and hurried to one of my drawers, opening it.

I knew I had a first aid kit in one of my four drawers, but none was in the first, neither the second. Why? Because I searched every one of them.

Now, people usually say third time the charm, right? Sadly, this just happened to be fourth time the charm. To simplify things, the kit was in the fourth one, wasting even more precious time.

Ripping it open, I quickly searched for the desired object and found it not a second too soon. But I still wish I had found it a second too soon.

Grabbing the bandage, I ran over to Twilight and rolled her on her back with my first hand, somehow able to unroll the bandage with my other hand at the same time. Releasing her, I tried grabbing the roll with my free hand to unroll it quicker. Instead I dropped it on the ground. Gosh, what's with me dropping stuff today? Cursing myself, I bent down to pick it up and tried to unroll it again, this time luckily, I managed to do it without dropping it, thank god.

Turning to Twilight, I removed her red bandages and started placing the clean one instead. I was so stressed I seemed to do it at supernatural speed, faster than my eyes could react. I guess that's the side effect of being pumped with adrenaline for more than five minutes.

I finished by attaching the end of the bandage, but didn't have time to admire my work. Instead, I looked at her face. She looked so calm and...peaceful. Wait...oh no. No no no no no no! Please no! Not now! I grabbed her face and shook her lightly. "Twilight! You gotta wake up! Don't leave me! Please, don't leave! Don't...leave...me..." I could feel a certain wetness rolling down my cheek. And no, this was not liquid pride. This was true tears. Of sorrow...and sadness...Twilight is...no. No, it's not true. I can still save her. I don't care, I will save her! She is not dead!

"Twilight! Wake up! Don't you dare die on me!" I jumped up and placed my hands on her chest, just above the cut, and started to push twice every second on her chest, until I pushed thirty times. Then I grabbed her chin, closed her nostrils and pressed my mouth against hers. This was wrong in so many ways, but I didn't care. I wouldn't care even if the whole world was looking at me. I started blowing while keeping an eye on her chest. It was raising slowly, until I stopped blowing and it started sinking. I couldn't have gotten a better reaction. I pressed my lips on hers again and blew, releasing after a few seconds, while getting the same reaction. I repeated this action a few more times, then went back to her chest and started to push it twice every second once again.

"Come on...come on...!" I went back to her lips and blew again. Her chest raising. Then I released, her chest sinking. I repeated for five more times, then I put my cheek close to her mouth and waited for a few seconds.

"Damn, no reaction!"

I went back to her chest and started pushing again.

"Don't you dare die on me. Don't you FUCKING DARE DIE ON ME!!!" I stopped pushing and slapped her. Hard. Going back to the mouth, I starting blowing again. Then back to the chest. And her mouth again. Then chest. Everytime I changed action, my attempts to save her seemed to be less and less hopeful. But I didn't care. I knew she probably already was dead, but I refused to accept it. I pushed. Blew. Pushed. Blew. Repeat. I slapped her again.

"I know you're in there! Come on, wake up already! WAKE UP!! DON'T IGNORE ME LIKE THAT!!!" I started crying. I didn't let that stop me though. My eyes were flooding with tears right bow, blocking my vision. I didn't care anymore. Push. Blow. Repeat. Push blow. Repeat.

Then my body spasmed and refused listening to me anymore. All my energy was gone. I was crying. Loudly. I can't believe it.......She...was.......she's................

Then I heard something. Something that made my heart stop. I listened. There it was again! I looked at Twilight. She was coughing softly. I was just staring at her with my swollen eyes as she coughed, then she stopped.

Slowly, she started opening her big purple eyes. She stared at me.

"Rex...? What are you..."

I flung myself at her, embracing her in a tight hug. Tears started flooding my eyes and I started crying uncontrollably. She was probably surprised by my sudden affection.

"Don't you dare scare me like that again!" I barely made out the words, and I just cried openly, my eyes streaming with tears. She didn't do anything at first, but then she returned the hug. This made me cry even more.

Slowly but surely, my cries turned to sobs, then sniffing, then I started to just...breathe. Slowly inhaling, then exhaling the precious air. Never before have I been so thankful for being able to breathe.

I'm sure I was like that for a few minutes, but it felt like hours. At one point, Twilight said something.

"Could you please tell me what happened?"

Lifting myself from the hug, I dried off my tears, and started telling her. Everything.

The problems of my life, finding the show My little Pony, the fandom, how happy it made me, the deaths of a few loved ones I had, until that one day I found her, and how happy it made me to see they actually existed, and that she was laying in a puddle of blood. How I brought her to the hospital, and refused to leave. When I met the man with the glorious beard, and how worried I was, then coming home and lying to my parents saying I would sleep over at a friend. Literally. Just so I could stay at the hospital. Then how I knew the government would come. And how the bearded man teleported us out of there. How we landed here, and that she was hiding something, until I found her laying on the ground. how I slipped on the ground and dropped her, picking her up again and bringing her up, finding new bandages and replacing her old ones, and saw that she wasn't breathing. How I started the mouth to mouth method multiple times and screamed at her to wake up, until I just broke together, too exhausted to move, then her coughing.

"And, well, you know the rest." I tried to smile, but I'm sure it just resulted in a disorted expression. She was just staring at me. Then she looked down.

"I'm...I'm sorry..." she said, sounding a bit guilty.

I placed my hand on her shoulder.

"It's alright, you didn't know" I said. She looked up to me, and smiled.

I don't know if this was my imagination or not, but I think I saw a single tear running down her cheek. Who am I kidding, of course she did.

Looking around, I realized that my room was a complete and utter mess.

"I think it's best if I start cleaning up now" I said. She chuckled a bit, and said "Dont worry, I'll help you out."
