Twilight was awoken very early by a sudden thud on her roof. She quickly got out of bed and ran outside in time to see Mark floating down from the top of the tree flapping his wings as fast as he could but still going down at a decent speed. “Mark what are you doing?” “Oh, good morning Twilight, sorry if I woke you. Rainbow said I should try to learn how to glide and when I started loosing altitude I saw all the leaves and thought it would be soft. . . and I forgot their is very hard wood under the leaves.” Soon Rainbow dash showed up to scold Mark a little. “There you are! You where supposed to land in the lake, what are you doing here?” “Well my wings started giving out and I had to make a crash landing. Don’t worry I think I can climb the rope back up to your house and we can try again.” Rainbow turned around to go back to her house and saw Pinkie Pie and Applejack with some baskets was coming and they obviously had something for them to do. “Actually Mark, Rarity needed Fluttershy and I to help her make a new Outfit for pegasi so you can stay here for now and I will be back later to continue the lessons.” And then she flew off in the direction of Rarity’s house as fast as she could.
Pinkie Pie got there with a smile and seemed very exited. “Hi Twilight! Where was Rainbow Dash going? Oh well it doesn't matter because we get to go harvest berries without her. Oh she may feel left out, we will have to pick extra and give some to her. OH I have a great idea we should mmmphh.” She was silenced by Apple Jack’s hoof covering her mouth. “What Pinkie is trying to say is that we are going to pick some berries to make some special muffins for some grey pegasus and we may need your help. You see, the bushes only grow in the ever free forest and we only want to make one trip. so we need all the ponies we can get.” Mark started backing up slowly “Well. . . If rarity needs some pegasus to help her then I think I should go.” Twilight stoped him with her magic when he started to turn around. “Nonsense! they are probably going to work on dresses and like Apple Jack said we need all the ponies we can get.”
Once everypony had 2 baskets on their backs they set out to the ever free forest to pick the berries. when they reached the forest Pinkie was able to find the berries quickly because of their special growing patter. “These are called cliff berries, not the most creative name but the name helps you find them. The roots grow up the side of a cliff and when they reach the top they grow a bush with the very sour berries. But we have to be careful around them because the roots on the edge of the cliff suck the water out of the dirt and make it very easy to collapse. And when it does the berries get spread all over the cliff! That sounds so fun.” While they were picking the berries they could hear some bushes rustling behind them. When they looked to see what it was they saw a manticore walking past. Mark was too afraid of what he saw to ask about it and started to run but his quick motions caused the cliff to start to crumble as Twilight yelled at him to stop. “Mark be careful! Its just a manticore they look evil but they are very tame and if you keep that up you will cause the cliff to calapse.” When Twilight was done Mark shoved his hooves down as hard as he could to stop himself but this was too much for the cliff and it crumbled and fell, bringing each of the ponies down with it.
Apple Jack was the first to climb out of the pile of dirt they had gotten trapped under and found pinkie’s tail sticking out of the dirt flailing around and pulled her out. “You alright sugar cube?” “That was soooo much fun! lets do it again.” Twilight floated out with her magic and Mark was across her back. “We are OK.” Mark climbed off Twilight and started looking around. “Sorry about that everypony. We should try to find our way back since this cliff is not stable enough for us to try to climb.”
As they started walking along the edge of the cliff Mark began to notice more and more scratches in the roots that were on the cliff’s side. “Um Pinkie Pie what are these strange markings in the roots?” AppleJack interrupted before Pinkie could answer. “Those look like timber wolf marks. They claw everything in their territory to show their dominance over them. And with these many claw slashes I would guess we are in an area with a very large pack of them so we should stay quite.” The silence was too much for Pinkie and after only a minute she was talking. “AppleJack, what is a timber wolf and why should we not talk? Talking is amazing and we should enjoy every moment by talking all the time.” “Hush Pinkie. The timber wolfs are like any normal wolf except they are part tree. This makes them live for a long time so they live in very large packs, luckily they fight amongst themselves every know and then to help keep the population in check but the group in this area looks long overdue for a fight and if they aint fightin themselves they will be looking for something to fight. And I reckon that 4 ponies like ourselves will be perfect for them to attack.”
After a while of walking the noticed the cliff started being made of stone then dirt and the roots of the bushes become less common. With a little bit more time they came across a cave in the cliff. As they walked past it Twilight stopped. “Alright we have been walking for a while, I’m hungry and my hoofs are sore I think we should take a break here.” “Ah come on Twi we should keep going” AppleJack said followed by her stomach growling. “Oh. . . well maybe this could be a good idea” So they all stopped and went into the cave, Twilight was able to use her magic to light up the entire cave and when they were satisfied it was clear of any dangers they decided to get some food. “We should send out two ponies to find some food. Any more will draw too much attention. So who wants to come with me?” AppleJack asked the group and got a quick response from Mark. “Well its my fault we are in this situation so I guess I will go with you.”
Once Apple Jack and Mark found a small path they decided to follow it to find some food. After only a few minutes they came across a cluster of apple trees. Since Mark could not knock the apples down he kept watch and put the apples that Apple Jack knocked down into the basket they brought with them. After they had filled the basket with apples they decided to go back to the cave. On the way back they noticed that they had forgotten to leave a way to indicate where they had gotten onto the path. Mark was the first to realise that they were not going to remember soon so he thought of a way to find Pinkie and Twilight. “Hey Apple Jack, I think we should try calling for them. Since they are in a cave if we yell the sound should echo and they should hear us. And when they yell back the echo of the cave will also help us find the direction they are in.” “Well Mark that may be a good idea but well have ta do it fast before something else out here hears us yelling and comes to investigate.
So they started yelling for Pinkie and Twilight and quickly could hear a response. Luckily it was who they wanted to hear and not something in the forest coming for them. As they ran through the forest in the direction of their friends voices they came across some fallen logs in the way. Apple Jack had no trouble jumping on top of one but it shook and she fell off as Mark tripped over another. As they both stood back up they noticed the logs did too. “Its a pack of timber wolfs Mark! RUN!” Apple Jack shouted as they ran as fast as they could back to the path. Mark looked behind him and saw the wolves were gaining on them so he started flapping his wings as fast as he could to try to use them to go faster.
When they got to the path Mark told Apple Jack to go one way and he would have them follow him. He yelled at the wolfs as ran down the path they had been on before. When he looked back he noticed his plan had worked but realized that he now had a whole pack of timber wolfs after him. He closed his eyes from the stress as he flapped his wings to go faster and ran as fast as he could. At one moment he felt everything was normal but the next he suddenly could not hear or feel his galloping. In a moment of terror in case he may have gone off a cliff he looked down with his eyes wide open to realize his fears. He was about 20 feet in the air and could not hear the wolfs behind him.
It took mark a few seconds before his fear faded and he realized he was not falling but was in fact he was slowly going up. He looked back at his wings to notice they were flapping in a different way then before. He felt that they were doing a motion that seemed much more natural to him. So he tried to flap them to slow down and it worked. He became so interested in his new ability that he forgot about the others. In less then a minute he could hear Apple Jack shouting and he started to point himself at the sound and flap quickly.
Apple Jack was surrounded by the timber wolfs and had kicked one and knocked it down but it was getting back up and she saw it was going to attack again. She turned around at the sound of two wolves coming at her. As soon as she turned around she saw the two wolves get hit by a green blur from the sky the force of the object’s impact made them hid another wolf and crash into a tree. After a second Mark climbed out of the pile of tree bark and the wolfs. “You OK Apple Jack?” Mark asked with a grunt as he walked over to her. “I'm fine, looks like you scared away the wolfs and learned a new trick.” Apple Jack said this as the wolfs Mark had hit got up and ran after the rest of the pack scared by what had just happened.
Mark had seen the smoke coming from the cave and used it to find Twilight and Pinkie. The whole way to them Mark was flying in celebration. When they got to the cave, and after they had a small celebration, Twilight came up with a plan for Mark to fly into the air to look for the way out of the forest. He was able to look around and once he saw Ponyville he looked around the forest and saw a path that would lead them out of the Everfree forest. The way out was simple. Mark picked enough of the berries Pinkie needed to fill the order as an apology for the whole thing.
The entire way back they noticed a timber wolf watching them every now and then but as soon as they saw Mark they started to back away. Mark was too busy apologising to notice any of the wolfs and was not satisfied that he was forgiven until They got out of the forest. When they did get out it had gotten rather late and they all decided to go have some dinner and go home. Pinkie gave Mark some bits for his help and told him that she had fun no mater how bad it got out in the forest.
Rainbow Dash was surprised to see Mark show up at her house by flying and not using the rope she set up. While Mark described what happened Twilight was making her own description of the events. “Spike take a letter. Dear Princess Celestia, today I learned that when your friends have an idea or an adventure they want you to help them with you should always help them. Because no mater what you do as long as you do it with a friend the outcome can only be good.
