Chapter 1: Welcome to my story

Identifying them is easy; after 6 years on the Guard, it comes like a second nature, but being one of them, now thats the tricky part. Being a killer of killers does have its rewards! I take dangerous ponies off the street, at least that’s what i’ve always told myself. My name is Double edge and this is my story.

Why don’t we start from the beginning? I was a young colt, had a normal life, a loving mother and father, went to school, played, all the normal things, but I had a darkness inside me, a darkness that squirmed and festered. I denied it and pushed it deep down inside me, but all that changed when I saw my mother killed; after that I let the darkness take over. I beat up all the other foals at school and I killed small animals, I just let it consume me. Until my my dad found out...

“Die, die, die!” I plunged the knife into the rabbit over and over. I could feel the blood splattering my face each time I plunged the knife in.
“How does it feel son?”
I froze, letting the knife fall from my grip and into the grass “D-dad?”

“Can you feel it son, the rush, the thrill of watching the life fade from your victim's eyes? I always knew you were like me; I could feel it deep in my soul.”
Hearing that, I started to cry, and the tears streamed down my face.
“Now that I know what you are son, we can head home and I can start preparing you.”

My tears stopped as I turned to face him, “Prepare me for what?”
He had a glint in his eye, as he grinned and said, “For your training”

That day, I learned that my dad also had a darkness, but he controlled his. He learned ways to keep it at bay, and so he taught me to harness my darkness; he showed me how to kill without being caught, he also taught me to kill with a purpose and to only target other ponies like me-other psychopathic killers with a heart of darkness. My father helped me hone my technique and perfect it. Soon my dad passed on. I got over it quickly, I got a house, joined the Guard and went on with my killing, still managing to keep my darkness stilled.

Now, I bet you're wondering, why does a serial killer work for the Guard? Well, it’s simple. What better way to find killers, than to be a part of the ponies who stop them; no one ever suspects a thing when a killer goes missing. Everything works out in the end. For everypony.

“Hey Edge, want to come with us? We’re going to go and get some drinks.”
I closed my locker, “No thanks. I’m just gonna head home. I have some business I need to take care of.” I smiled and trotted out of the barracks.
“What a weird guy. Always working, and never going out. I wonder what his problem is?”

I walked into my house, throwing my duffle bag onto my couch while I headed to the kitchen to pour myself a drink. “What a long day.” I took a sip and headed towards the living room, “But it’s not over yet!” I opened the bag and took out a file report.

“Lets see... Center Spade a.k.a the Prench Baker. Wanted for 17 murders, victims were butchered and seemingly baked into numerous pastries” I took another sip of my drink. “Believed to be living among the vicinity of Canterlot.” ‘Under an unknown alias.’ was written on the bottom of his M.O.; I placed my glass onto the coffee table ahead of me. “No recent leads or sightings for Spade have been brought to the Guards’ attention. May be working in a lower Canterlot bakery-from an anonymous source (to be looked into).”
“‘A bakery, and a pony closely fitting the description of a killer, has come to their info.’ They have done nothing! It’s amazing these guards have ever caught any criminal.” I scoffed, closing the report and stood up. I walked over to the white-framed window, holding up his some-what blurry picture with my magic, “Center Spade: another sick psycho feeding his darkness.”

I sat outside Doughnut Joes, waiting to see if the anonymous tip was worth anything. “This is pointless; that tip must have been a bust.”
“Hey Ace! Go sweep the front room! I’m going to go make some more cream fillers!”

“I’m on it, boss!” I looked back into the shop to see a stallion walk into the front room from the back. He matched the description, there was no doubt about it; that was Spade.

I smiled and whispered,“Found you.” and left for home.

“Edge! Front and center!”
I walked forward from the line of guards, “Sir!’ I saluted.
“You will be in charge of watching the lower north side of the city today. You are to patrol your vicinity, and keep an eye out for trouble. Do you understand me?!”
“Sir, yes sir” I saluted and headed off with my patrol. How lucky, it’s in the location of Spade. now I can easily keep an eye on him.

I had been covering the lower north side for hours, making sure to never stray too far from the shop, and never lose sight of my target.

“Hey Edge; shift change.” I looked up, to see a pegasus guard land in front of me. “Chief says it’s your break.”
“Thanks.” I took off my helmet and walked away. Perfect! Here’s my opportunity to see if I can get inside his head.

“ Well well, a Guard in my shop. Welcome! Would you like a bear-claw? How about an eclair? It’ll be on the house! Anything for a Guard!”
“Um, heh thanks. But how about just a regular chocolate doughnut with sprinkles, please?” I said, sitting down close to Spade, ever so busily sweeping the clean floor. “So, what’s your name?” I asked, trying not to show too much interest.
“Oh, it’s um Ace... Ace Diamond.” He cooed, looking at me with a nervous expression
This stallion is an idiot. An obvious alias and a nervous expression when approached by a Guard. Why hasn't he been caught already!?
“Ace, well I would be careful: there's been word of a dangerous criminal in this area. If you see anything, anything at all, please contact the Guard.” I got up and went to the door, with my doughnut floating close to me with my magick. “We'll be safe.” He said, as I left the building. I hung around back, behind the dumpsters filled with napkins and unfinished meals. It's time to play the waiting game.
