Chapter 19: Let The Rain Fall

The next few days passed and the tension started to settle in about the impending show now only some four days away from now. The team had spent a few nights training under the watch of Silver Skies with impressing results. However, Rainbow had yet to show anypony her idea for the routine.

Today though was a very bad day for weather, with the winter finally setting in the rain had started to come a lot more frequently than before. Still all the Wonderbolts were out bright and early to do the days back breaking training.

The Manehatten arena was not the best shelter for the incoming rain and the cold air that came along with it wasn’t exactly a pleasant feeling, still though Spitfire bared through the cold as she watched the team dive and perform the routine for the show, luckily the jump suits were made for this kind of weather, but the tightness of the material meant that at high speeds the rain felt like razor sharp knives hitting you like they had been fired from a cannon.

Rainbow scrunched her face and gritted her teeth together as she powered through the foul weather, she wanted to impress the team today with her new move, but in the bad weather it would seem as if she would have to hold off on that until later.

Spitfire shivered slightly from the cold wet feeling now soaking her uniform robbing it of it’s waterproof ability, she took that as a sign for a break, pulling her whistle up she blew hard. The Wonderbolts flew back down onto the arena before they followed the captain inside to the locker rooms of the stadium.

Spitfire made a headcount of every pony as they trotted into the building, happy that everypony was present the yellow mare sighed and began to try and remove her headpiece that was stuck to her furr by the water.

Rainbow looked over towards her marefriend and held back her laughter as the golden mare tried with all her might to get her uniform off, pulling it forcefully only seeming to tighten the uniform around her body. Spitfire stopped when she heard the muffled giggles from her marefriend.

Spitfire sighed silently pleading for the mare’s help. Dash smiled warmly and trotted over to her holding in her laughter as she helped the mare get her headpiece off. Spitfire breathed out a sigh of relief when they both managed to finally remove the headpiece from her.

Dash smiled and leaned in giving the mare a light peck on the cheek, “better?” she asked happily.

Spitfire nodded. “Yeah thanks Dash, these suits really do stick to you sometimes,” she replied with a groan now moving on to tackle the rest of the uniform.

Dash chuckled. “Yeah, I was going to try that new move I’ve been working on, but that weather is really bad out there.”

“Mhm it’s apparently meant to last for the rest of today and tomorrow, I’ll see If Silver Skies will let us train inside for the rest of the day, we can just do some basic jogging and wing-ups,” Spitfire said happily picking up her soaked uniform and hanging over a nearby heater.

Dash nodded approvingly. “Yeah thats probably the best idea anypony’s had all week,” Dash said with a smirk.

Spitfire shook her head playfully, she flicked her tail across Dash’s face as she walked passed her heading towards the lounge for a break as the rest of the team followed.

...A Few Moments Later

As all the team members settled down for their break, Rainbow Dash couldn’t help but notice Spitfire’s anxious mood, she seemed stressed and It was something that made the sky blue mare slightly concerned for her.

Spitfire looked up from her work when she felt the sofa dip slightly, she turned her head and saw Dash sitting down next to her on the couch, the coffee table next to them consisted of a very big sheet of parchment which showed the routine for the performance in just a few days time.

Spitfire raised an eyebrow at her marefriend, “hey Dash is there anything wrong?” she asked in a slightly worried tone as she saw her marefriend’s concerned look.

Dash sighed and draped a wing over the mare, “Spitty you’re working yourself too hard on this,” the light blue pegasus stated.

“I know I am, but I just need to-,” Spitfire said before Dash put a hoof over her mouth silencing her.

“I know you want this to be perfect Spitfire...so do I, but you can’t get worked up by this...you just gotta trust everypony to do there best,” she said knowingly.

Spitfire felt a small smile start to tug at her lips at the mare's words, “you know all those friendship lessons sure have taught you something Rainbow,” she said. The sky blue mare chuckled and nodded in response.

Spitfire leaned down and rolled up the large parchment, she then set it down on the floor just a few feet away from the sofa before turning back to Rainbow, “I’m sorry Dash, it’s just this show could determine my job...and just with everything else thats going on I’m just getting a bit stressed.”

Dash leaned over and hugged the mare. “Come on Spitfire theres no need to stress about it on your own, you’ve helped me out so much in the past few months...I think it’s only fair if I help you through this as well.”

Spitfire nodded. “Well if you want to help me so much there is something you could tell me,” she said.

Rainbow raised an eyebrow, “what do you wanna know?” she asked curiously.

Spitfire leaned into the hug and whispered, “what is this move of yours that you want to try?” she asked her voice clearly filled with excitement.

Dash smirked. “Well...come with me,” she said getting up off the sofa and making her way towards the arena again with Spitfire hot on her hooves.

The heavy rain had now started to fade but the drizzle was still enough to make Spitfire’s goggles mist up as she flew next to Dash along the large arena, the light blue pegasus turned to look at Spitfire with a confident grin, “you ready?” she asked.

Spitfire nodded. Rainbow took that as her cue and started to edge ahead of the mare as she blasted down the arena. Spitfire watched in wonder as she saw the airspeed start to form around Dash’s hooves in small white cones before it began to envelope the pegasus.

Spitfire stopped flying all together when she saw the mare turn upwards towards the sky. Dash could feel the wind resistance start to build rapidly around her trying to force her back down to the ground. Rainbow gritted her teeth as she pushed onwards, the cone starting to grow bigger as she pushed upwards on the invisible force.

Rainbow started to feel the end coming closer, her wings were now starting to strain and the lack of oxygen from the pressure was making her head feel slightly numb. Still though she continued to push that little bit father as she finally felt the gates open letting her power through like a knife cutting through melted butter, she felt the shockwave of the rainboom vibrating through her body.

Spitfire’s eyes widened as she watched the colorful scene unfold around her, a giant oval of rainbow unleashed itself along the grey foggy sky, the light seeming to brighten up the day as if Celestia’s sun was beaming down at them. She continued to stare in amazement as a dark blue stallion came out of the inner stadium to stand by her side as the scene unfolded.

Rainbow finally managed to slow herself down to a safe enough speed to turn, as she did she smiled seeing the fading colors of the giant rainboom which had spanned across the large Manehatten stadium. She looked down and spotted the outline of two ponies watching on the ground below.

Spitfire started to feel a well of emotions, the boom had seemed to lighten her spirits and relieved a huge amount of stress from her mind. The sudden joy made Spitfire tingle with excitement, she bolted into the air and powered towards her marefriend.

Dash was hovering over the stadium now, she spotted one of the ponies now becoming slightly bigger, before she could even think the spec crashed into her, when she opened her eyes she found Spitfire right in front of her with a large smile adorning her face.

Dash smirked. “Well...did that help you out?” she asked curiously.

Spitfire nodded as she nuzzled the sky blue mare’s neck, “yeah it helped a lot Dash…now I guess the only thing to worry about is a unicorn stallion that will probably have us killed when we get back to Cloudsdale,” Spitfire said to which they both let out a small giggle. Suddenly the pair heard the faint sound of applause from below, they both turned to see Silver Skies with a proud smile on his face. The two pegasi floated down towards him as he spoke.

“Very nice trick Rainbow, I will be expecting this in the show for Manehatten,” Silver said in a hopeful tone.

Spitfire looked over to Rainbow Dash who smiled. “You sure can sir!” she said proudly. Silver Skies nodded and started to trot back into the inner stadium. Spitfire turned to Dash with a relieved expression.

“Well that went a hell of a lot better than intended...I think we’re ready for the show now,” she said happily.

Dash nodded. “Yeah, so do I…so for helping the team out and stuff could I maybe-,” she started before Spitfire interrupted her with the kiss she had been wanting. Dash smiled as Spitfire pulled away and the pair trotted into the inner parts of the stadium both now confident and ready for the show in Manehatten…
