Chapter 3: Getting to Know Her

Spitfire felt a sense of warmth and excitement as she trotted down a pathway in the main city streets of Cloudsdale. Celestia’s sun had left sometime ago, bringing out Cloudsdale’s nightlife scene; the moon and neon lights from the bars and nightclubs being the only source of finding your way around the sky city.

Spitfire’s mind had been buzzing with thoughts since she had left the Wonderbolt stadium a few hours ago. Although she had developed some minor feelings for the cyan mare, she practically knew nothing about her in terms of personality. She hoped she would find all that out after tonight though and just hoped that nothing would go wrong.

Spitfire rounded a corner onto Cloudsdale’s ‘Gold Crescent lane’, a street that was built only for the highest paid ponies in Cloudsdale. Spitfire saw Rainbow Dash waiting outside a big restaurant in Cloudsdale’s upper class level of the city.

Spitfire smiled and spoke up when she got close to the sky blue mare. "Hey Dash! You're early," Spitfire said with a warm smile as she came up to the mare.

Dash blushed slightly from the praise. "Heh…I try my best!" she replied happily before raising an eyebrow at the golden mare. "So... Where we headed?" she asked curiously.

Spitfire motioned to the restaurant behind Rainbow which was a called 'Le Restaurant des Mondes', a name that Rainbow had seen printed on the back of many magazine covers and papers alike.

Dash stepped back a few paces, fumbling her hooves. “Spits, I’m not sure I have enough in my entire bank account to pay for this,” she said hesitantly.

Spitfire chuckled. “Don’t you remember that I said it was my treat,” she said with a wink.

Dash blushed slightly, but she still protested in a vain attempt to stop her newly found friend from blowing all her money in one night. “You don’t have to do this Spitfire, we can just go-”

Spitfire giggled slightly, cutting the rainbow mare off. “Oh come on Dash, what's the point of getting money if you're never going to spend it, right?” she replied as she pushed the huge glass door open, revealing the inside of the restaurant.

Dash followed the yellow mare into the eatery, the smell of freshly baked bread and confectioneries wafted through the air along with the smell of vanilla scented candles which lined the front desk of the bar.

A stallion graciously stood behind a lectern, he was wearing a black tailored blazer with a thin black tie and a monocle also hung down below his front pocket. The stallion smiled as the two mares approached.

“Bonjour madams, what can we do for you on this fine evening?” the stallion asked politely.

Spitfire smiled. “A table for two please,” she asked kindly.

The stallion nodded happily and took two menus from underneath the lectern and motioned for the two mares to follow him. “Any préférence where you would like to sit, madams?” he asked.

Spitfire looked around the empty tables in the restaurant, the place wasn’t packed, only some light chatter coming from the bar and some from the few occupied tables. Spitfire smiled and pointed over to a table nearest to the piano in the center of the restaurant.

The stallion smiled happily. “An excellent choice madam,” he said before making his way over to the table and seating the two mares.

Once Spitfire and Dash had sat down, the stallion handed them their menus and took out a small notebook from his pocket. “Would you like to order some drinks, madams?” he asked curiously.

Spitfire nodded. “Yes, I’ll have a Paradise cocktail please,” she asked. The stallion nodded and wrote down the item before turning to Dash.

The cyan mare put a hoof to the back of her neck hesitantly. “Um… could I just have a glass of water?” she asked.

The stallion nodded and bowed slightly before leaving the two mares on their own. Spitfire smiled and decided to start up a conversation, wanting to know more about the mare, “So Dash, what do you like doing... besides flying of course.”

Dash leaned back on her chair as she pondered. “I guess hanging out with my friends or going to Wonderbolt derbies.”

Spitfire smirked. “Who’s your favorite Wonderbolt?” she asked quizzically.

Rainbow was caught off guard with the captain's current question. She sat there as she pondered for a moment. “Um…”

Just then, and to Rainbow’s apparent relief, the waiter returned, holding both drinks on a tray. “Here are your drinks, madams,” the stallion said politely as he set both drinks down on the table before grabbing his notebook again.

Spitfire took that as the signal to order food and quickly looked down at the menu. “Um... I’ll take the house soup with extra vegetables,” she said happily. The stallion nodded and wrote down the item before again turning towards the multicoloured mare.

Dash looked down and tried to pick a certain dish from the list of words she had never even heard of before. Spitfire sensed Dash’s predicament and and motioned a hoof to one of the items on the menu.

Dash smiled. “I’ll have the hay fry and a tomato soup, please?” she said kindly.

The stallion trotted away as he wrote the rest of the items down on his notebook.

Spitfire looked back at Dash and took a sip of her drink before she spoke. “So tell me, why do you want to become a Wonderbolt?” she asked.

Dash smiled as the memories came back to her, “I was never really all that into it when I was small, but it was my dad that really got me into flying.”

Spitfire swirled the straw around her cocktail. “Really, what did your father do?” she asked.

Rainbow pondered for a moment. “He used to be a security guard for the Cloudsdale stadium, he always said he used to slack off and watch the shows from his post. He loved watching them, and when I was old enough, he took me to one and that’s when I got really hooked,” she said happily.

Spitfire smiled. “That’s a nice little story there Dash, what does your mother do?” she asked curiously.

Dash smirked. “My mother’s Firefly,” she said, expecting the Wonderbolt to know of her mother.

Spitfire had heard the name somewhere before, it rang some bells in her head, but she couldn’t seem to work out exactly where the name came from. “...and what does she do?” she asked hesitantly.

Dash muffled a giggle. “She’s the weather manager for Cloudsdale’s entire weather industry.”

Spitfire nearly choked on her cocktail. “W-what?!” she spluttered as Dash went into full blown laughter.

Spitfire then started to remember the deep pink mare. She could remember seeing her on her Wonderbolt graduation day with the mayor of Cloudsdale.

After Dash had calmed down, Spitfire spoke. “Yeah, I know Firefly, never knew she was your mother,” she said.

Dash rolled her eyes. “Really? Not the fact I have a lightning bolt for a cutie mark and my coat colour matches her mane?” she said before she giggled slightly as Spitfire joined in with her.

Dash was enjoying her time with the Wonderbolt captain. She seemed a lot more normal without the suit on and far better than she was at the academy. Dash decided to turn the conversation around as their food arrived and Spitfire started to dig in.

Rainbow smiled. “So, how did you become a Wonderbolt?” she asked casually as her excitement increased.

Spitfire grinned. “Took you long enough to ask that question,” she said, muffling a giggle as Dash’s face flushed.

Spitfire sighed. “Well you might not believe it, but I’m not from Cloudsdale,” the Wonderbolt said as Dash looked on in astonishment.

Spitfire grinned. “I’m actually from Canterlot originally, my mom and my brother are the only other pegasi in my family, my dad is a unicorn,” she said happily, taking another bite from her meal.

Dash stopped eating and pondered for a moment. “So if you were in Canterlot, did you ever go to flight school?” she asked curiously.

Spitfire nodded. “Yeah… eventually, me and Blazing Fire got into summer flight camp when we were still foals. I remember all the races we used to have. But when we passed the camp our races didn’t stop. We started racing across towns, then to cities...,” said with a smile, remembering all the vivid memories.

Spitfire continued. “Just out of luck, we happened to race past a cafe where Silver Wing, the Wonderbolt captain at the time, was having lunch. He asked us if we wanted to join up for the Wonderbolt academy, and that's when me and Blazing Fire met Soarin,” she explained, smiling at the now distant memories.

Dash smirked. “What was Soarin like when you first met him?” she asked curiously.

Spitfire looked both ways before leaning in and whispering, “You’ll never guess, but Soarin is actually Swedish.”

Dash’s eyes widened before she let out an eruption of giggles. Spitfire grinned as she leaned back on the chair and continued her tale, “Yeah, his mother was from a Swedish acrobatics team, but when they came over to Cloudsdale when Soarin was still a foal, his mother just didn’t want to leave. It was soon after that he saw his first Wonderbolt performance and just got hooked.”

Dash couldn’t stop laughing at this point. She had never expected there would be so many stories that she hadn’t been told before. She was enjoying her time with Spitfire so far and the two traded off between stories as their conversations went long into the night.

Dash giggled into her drink as Spitfire finished telling a story about how Blazing Fire had reacted to the movie ‘Zombie Pony’. Spitfire sighed happily. “Well I think it's time we headed home, shall we?” she asked.

Rainbow nodded. “Yeah, it was nice of you to do this Spitfire,” she said as the yellow mare retrieved the bill from the waiter she had just called over.

Spitfire smiled. “Thanks Dash, it was nice having someone to talk to,” she said happily as she looked at the bill before getting a checkbook out of her saddlebags.

Dash peared over the small piece of paper and her eyes nearly bugged out of her sockets at the total amount of bits for their night out.

Spitfire put the checkbook on the table and looked at Dash’s expression before raising an eyebrow. “You okay Dash?” she asked, concerned.

Dash shook her head. “Spitfire, this is too much! Look, I can pay for my half,” she pleaded.

Spitfire shook her head. “No Dash, it's fine, trust me,” she said, filling out a piece of paper on her checkbook as she made glances between it and the bill before she put it on her empty plate before getting up and out of the chair. Dash followed the mare out of the restaurant and onto the street outside.

Rainbow looked over at the yellow mare. “Thanks Spits, you didn’t have to do that,” she said kindly.

Spitfire turned around to face the cyan mare. “It’s cool Dash, I enjoyed spending time with you. It was… nice,” she said with a genuine smile.

Dash returned the smile as Spitfire hugged her tightly. “Thanks for coming out tonight, Dash,” she said, hugging the mare.

Dash felt her heart rate rise slightly at the contact with her hero. She kept smiling as she returned the hug, not caring about the tinge of pink growing on her cheeks.

Spitfire sighed happily as she released the hug, turning to walk back down the street. “Are you staying somewhere tonight ?, Silver Wing should have you in a hotel by tomorrow,” she said.

Dash looked up to the sky and then back at her idol. “I’m not sure,it’s a bit too long to fly back to Ponyville, I guess I’ll just drop in on my parents,” she said, pondering on the thought a little.

Spitfire waved a dismissive hoof. “You can stay with me, it's only a short walk,” she said as she began trotting towards the end of the street.

Dash was shocked at this. “Spitfire, I-I can’t! You've already helped me out too much today,” she protested.

Spitfire smiled. “It’s nothing at all Dash. Besides, I can’t have my protégé flyer sleeping on a foal size bed for the next month,” she said with a light giggle.

Dash rolled her eyes playfully as she sighed in defeat. “Okay, fine… just so long as it's not any trouble,” she said as she trotted up beside the Wonderbolt captain.

Spitfire giggled. “It’s no problem Dash, jeez stop worrying so much,” she said, giving the cyan mare's face a playful flick of her tail as they walked down the street towards the home.

Spitfire and Dash turned left around a corner onto a street named ‘Crossfire Lane’. They then walked down the street until they came up to a decently sized home in the middle of the street. Spitfire stopped at the steps to the home on the street and took a set of keys from her saddlebags. When the pair got to the door though, Spitfire noticed the house’s lights were on, shining dimly through the closed curtains.

Spitfire put the keys back in her saddlebags before pushing open the door to reveal the the hallway to her home. The sounds of laughter could be heard coming from the room to the left of the hallway. Spitfire trotted down the corridor and looked into the home’s living room to see Blazing Fire sitting on the couch next to a pale cyan mare who had a white bandage wrapped firmly around her left wing.

Spitfire narrowed her eyes towards her brother. “Blazing Fire, Fleetfoot, what the hay are you two doing in my house?” she asked, confused.

The stallion turned to his sister, his face clearly held the tired features from the day’s performance workout earlier. “I went over to Fleetfoot’s for the day, then we went out for something to eat. We were gonna go back to my place, but your house is so much closer to the bar,” he said, whining a bit towards the end like a two year old foal not getting his daily nap time.

Spitfire resisted the current urge to facehoof at this point. But instead she just gave out a long sigh before turning to Dash, who was still standing in the corridor, and motioned for her to come in.

Rainbow trotted up to the fiery mare and looked into the living area. Fleetfoot gasped when she saw the cyan mare and jumped up to greet her. “Hey, you're Rainbow Dash, right? Now where do I remember you from?” she said, putting a hoof to her chin as she tried to remember.

Blazing Fire chuckled and shook his head playfully. “You mean from the fact that she saved your flank at the Coliseum two years ago?” he asked sarcastically.

Fleetfoot smiled and nodded. “Yeah, that’s where I’ve seen you before, thanks for that by the way,” she said with a smile before trotting towards the entrance of the home. Blazing Fire soon followed as he made his way past his sister's glare before trotting out of the home with the mare.

Spitfire sighed. “Brothers,” she said, shaking her head in exasperation.

Spitfire trotted up the stairs to the room and showed Dash to her bedroom for the night. “Here we are Dash, a bed fit for a Wonderbolt,” she said whilst opening the door, revealing a double cloud bed in a decently sized room.

The walls and items around the room where plain, but then again, it was only a guest room and it was certainly a lot better than her own room at her parent's house.

Dash smiled warmly. “Thanks Spits… for everything today,” she said, her cheeks turning a shade of crimson as she thanked the golden mare.

Spitfire smiled happily. “No problem Dash. I’m glad you enjoyed it too, so maybe we can do it again sometime?” she said happily. Dash smiled back and gave a confident nod.

Spitfire smirked and left the room, trotting off down the hallway towards her own room, leaving Dash to her own thoughts. For the cyan mare, today was something out of her favorite dream, but today, she finally lived it. She also loved the time she was getting to spend with Spitfire, she liked her style, her funny attitude, and her love of the same thrills as herself.

It was then that Dash’s mind began to wander slightly, she thought of what would happen after the tour was done and if Spitfire would maybe even consider doing more things with her. She smiled at that thought and made a mental note to ask the mare at a later date.

Sighing happily, the cyan mare laid down onto the fluffy surface of the cloud bed, and felt her eyes begin to close as she let her mind drift into dreamland.

Meanwhile, Spitfire was also in deep thought about the day's current events. She had enjoyed finally being able to spend time around the mare she had been admiring for so long. She finally felt like she could just be herself for once, rather than being captain Spitfire or sister Spitfire. She felt like she could act the way she wanted to act around Dash without having to make any decisions or always having to be on guard.

Spitfire sighed happily as she got into her bed, she knew that she would have to reveal her secrets to Dash one day, but she passed it off for now, enjoying the feeling of being herself again and becoming friends with the one she loved.
Though, one day, she hoped she could be more than just a friend...
