Chapter 32: The Final Hurdle

Rainbow Dash awoke, she quickly found herself in the same hospital room where she had spent the last few weeks...she then remembered why she was here, but her fear was instantly taken away when her eyes fell on a sleeping Spitfire only a few inches away from her. Rainbow smiled and leaned into nuzzle the mare. Spitfire murmured in response before slowly opening her eyes to see the rainbow maned mare by her side. Spitfire grinned. “Hello Rainbow Dash, such a pleasant surprise,” she said leaning over to give the pegasus a quick kiss on the cheek.

Rainbow smiled. “Anything for my marefriend…speaking of which do you want something to eat?” she asked curiously.

Spitfire was about to respond when her stomach answered for her in a low growl. The golden mare put a forehoof on her belly as she looked up at her marefriend. “Um yeah that’d be nice Dash.”

Rainbow smirked as she trotted towards the exit of the room, but before she opened the door a stallion came through looking between Rainbow and Spitfire hesitantly.

Rainbow raised an eyebrow. “Blazing what are you doing here, I thought you were with Fleetfoot today?” she asked quizzically remembering what the stallion had said to her the day before.

Blazing sighed heavily before he spoke, “T-Theres something that’s come up.”

Rainbow kept her eyebrow raised. “What do you mean?” she asked getting slightly concerned. Before Blazing could respond a large alicorn trotted into the room, her main nearly matching Rainbow’s in colors and her flank marked a giant sun much like the one rising from the window in the room.

Rainbow’s eyes widened. “C-Celestia...what are you doing here, I mean um...your majesty.”

Celestia chuckled to herself before speaking, “Celestia is just fine by me Rainbow Dash, I trust you and Spitfire have made a full recovery.”

Rainbow nodded. “Yeah...wait what do you mean I wasn’t hurt,” she said knowingly.

Celestia smiled and leaned down to tap Rainbow’s forehead with a hoof, “I was talking about in here my little pony.”

Rainbow realised what the princess was saying and nodded happily. “Yeah I’m cool now Spitfire’s back,” she said turning to the mare in question who gave her a playful wink. Celestia smiled at the act before she spoke again.

“It brings me great relief that both of you are okay and on the road of recovery...but there is one thing that I will need your assistance in completing,” Celestia explained as Rainbow Dash and Spitfire gave equal looks of curiosity.

The goddess's smile lost it’s happiness as it faded from her muzzle and a more serious tone came over, “I need you both to be present with me for Golden Fire’s court trial...he’s guilty on all accounts but he pleaded not guilty...I will be needing one of you to speak for the prosecution...I have just been informed that Spitfire can be discharged from the hospital for the day to appear in the trail.”

Rainbow’s eyes widened. “He what! That stallion nearly killed my marefriend!” she almost screamed her anger from the past few days resurfacing once again.

Celestia nodded. “I agree Rainbow, but in Equestria every pony is entitled to a fair trial...no matter how much the hoof points to them,” she said angrily.

Rainbow sighed as she blew off some excess anger. She was about to speak again when she felt somepony nuzzle her neck. She turned her head to see Spitfire with a comforting smile on her face, “It’s okay Rainbow...it’s just one last hurdle right,” she said putting a forehoof on her shoulder.

Rainbow looked between her marefriend and the princess, “I know, but I just don’t want you getting hurt or anything,” she said nuzzling the mare lovingly.

Before Spitfire could come up with a reply Celestia spoke, “Don’t worry about that Rainbow Dash, I will make sure nothing happens to you or Spitfire. Your friends will all be at the court with you,” she explained as Blazing smiled happily.

Spitfire nodded. “Well it’s settled, lets put this guy where he’s supposed to be,” she said confidently.

Rainbow was slightly, “Golden Fire’s your father Spitfire...aren't you even a little scared?”

Spitfire stopped her actions towards the door as she turned around to face all the ponies in the room, “He stopped being my father when he tried to hurt the ponies I loved,” she said trotting out of the room with all the others soon following after her.

The sun was now rising into the sky as the ponies all made their way into the Canterlot Castle. Celestia guided the ponies through the many vast hallways of the building until she came up to a large door where two guards stood to attention. Celestia ushered the ponies into the large hall where many seats where located in a ring around a chair and a few other things in the middle, they were set slightly lower from the seats that circled them.

Celestia let Rainbow Dash and Spitfire sit next to their friends who were already currently seated in the hall, the regal princess trotted over next to her sister who took the high chairs in the hall. After a few moments a few more ponies in suits and other uniforms came in settling down in the middle of the hall.

Celestia levitated a mallet and hit it on a wooden circle which was molded into the wooden chair she sat on bringing all the hustled conversations to a stop, all the ponies in the room turned to face the goddess as she spoke.

“Bring in the accused pony,” she said looking at the guards who opened the door.

Rainbow scowled as the golden stallion that had nearly taken her love away from her, he was taken in being flanked by six guards on either side as they brought him to the chair in the middle of the hall. Celestia hit the mallet again signalling the start of the case.

The Court case was taking longer than Rainbow Dash had expected, all the while her anger kept rising and rising at the stallion who kept trying to deny his involvement in the crime he had committed. Spitfire had just gone up to give a speech for the prosecution and was just trotting back over to the crowd of ponies that Rainbow sat with, Spitfire sat down next to her marefriend giving her a soft kiss on the cheek, “See it wasn’t that hard Rainbow,” she said plainly. Rainbow didn’t give a reply as she stared at the stallion in an annoyed expression. Spitfire was about to speak up when Celestia hit the mallet signalling everypony’s attention once again.

“Okay ladies and gentlecolts the court case has come to a close, have the jury made a decision?” she asked looking down at the ponies in the middle of the hall, the ponies looked at each other and nodded before one of the mares stood up nervously in front of the princess as she spoke, “yes your majesty, we have fined the pony...guilty of all charges brought forward today.”

The princess nodded as the mare sat down, Golden Fire immediately stood up pointing to the mare that had just spoken, “That is horseshit!, she’s a mare why do you believe whatever she says!” the stallion shouted as a few guards held him back down onto the seat. Celestia scowled at the stallion while the mare who had just been accused ducked her head low while a stallion sitting next to her wrapped a wing around comfortingly.

Before anypony could speak though a voice got the attention of everyone in the hall, “You know what Golden Fire let me tell you something!” Rainbow shouted as she flew down to where the stallion was seated now chained to the chair from his last lashing out. Rainbow let all her anger come out as she spoke, “You are a heartless, worthless piece of useless shit! I don’t care if you think your the most powerful pony in Equestria because if anything all you’ve done in the past month is destroy everything you had, and let me tell you something else,” she said closing in on the stallion. “You don’t know what it’s like to sit and have the pony you love only inches away from you dying! not knowing if they're ever going to wake up. Sitting there having your heart torn from you and your world crashing down around you.” she said now breathing heavily as she felt tears start to form at the corner of her eyes, “Just one last thing though…you think filly foolers are bad...well that doesn’t mean they can’t love, it doesn’t mean they can’t do great and amazing things and it definitely doesn’t mean they should be killed!...I don’t think you’ll take any of this in, but I just wanted to know that you didn’t hurt me or any other pony in this room...you only made us stronger than you.”

With that Rainbow slowly hovered back over to the seats beside her friends and Spitfire. Celestia was happy that Golden Fire had been shut up, but she didn’t let it show on her straight face and instead she hit the mallet and spoke, “Ladies and Gentlecolts, by the power invested in me as ruler of Equestria I hereby sentence Golden Fire to life in the Canterlot dungeons where he may live the rest of his days.”

As Celestia hit her mallet for the final time the guards took hold of the now livid Golden Fire as he shouted all the way out of the room and down the hallway. Once his sounds went silent everypony in the room gave a sigh in relief. Rainbow hugged Spitfire tightly, nuzzling the mare lovingly in her arms. Spitfire gladly returned the gesture, “Come on you need to get back to the Hospital,” Rainbow said as she released the embrace on her marefriend.

“Come on Rainbow you and Spitfire can have a little fun outside with us for a while can’t you?” Starfire asked as Rainbow looked over to the older mare and her five friends who all gave encouraging smiles. Rainbow smiled with them as an Idea came to mind…

Over the Canterlot’s royal garden two pegasi flipped and rolled together in harmony while ponies from the ground below watched in amazement. Rainbow and Spitfire kept the tricks safe and easy for Spitfire’s sake as they performed but the show was good nonetheless. Rainbow Dash had a smile a mile wide as she soared in the sky with the mare she loved. She was over the moon that her beloved was back from the edge of life itself, it was as if she had been blessed with the ultimate gift for her loyalty. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with Spitfire no matter what...and it was something she intended on doing.

When both pegasi finished the pair soared over the Castle leaving their friends to wonder where they were.

As they flew Rainbow saw a nearby cloud and motioned for Spitfire to come with her. The golden mare happily obliged as the pair rested on the cloud as they lovingly nuzzled each other over the sunset sky. Rainbow sighed happily as leaned on her mare as the pair watched the sun start it’s low descent into another part of the world. Rainbow thought about everything the pair had been through together. "You know something Spit...I don't think I'll ever forget this I mean...thinking all this started way back at a sweet shop to where we've come now is just...amazing, I couldn't believe it when you asked me out and all the time we've spent together...I've cherished every single moment with you. I've finally lived my foal hood dream...but it wasn't just becoming a Wonderbolt. I love you Spitfire for now and forever," Rainbow said blushing slightly.

Spitfire smiled at the mare that meant the world to her, she loved Rainbow more than anypony in the world, she wanted to be with Rainbow for the rest of her life knowing she would always be in a strong bond with a mare she loved. It was with these words that Spitfire made her final decision that would change her life...she looked down at her marefriend as she spoke, "Rainbow," she said getting the mare's attention in a heartbeat, "I love you too, more than you'll ever know...when you saved my life all those years back I always wanted to return the favour...now I have I just feel more love for you than I ever could in my life, you make me the mare I am today Dash, you bring out the joyful side in me. I love you for that and more...you are my world Dashie and I can't live it without you in it...so I want to ask you something important Dash," she said as she draped a wing over the mare and held their muzzles close.

Rainbow looked up at the mare she loved, "What's the question?" she asked curiously. Spitfire grinned as she spoke, she took out a feather from her wing, it was smaller than her other feathers and shone a golden yellow in it's texture, Rainbow's eyes widened when she realised what the mare was going to ask and her heart soared for the skies.

...Rainbow Dash...will you marry me?...
