Chapter 31: Time Bomb

Another few days passed like lightning, and so far it had only brought more frustration to everypony. The doctors had started monitoring Spitfire much more closely than before. Rainbow tried to ask what it was they were monitoring, but she never got an explanation.

It had now been nearly two weeks since Spitfire’s accident. Things had looked bad from the start, but now everypony was feeling the suffering pain of Spitfire’s life ebbing away from them. Rainbow, of course, wasn’t letting this faze her. She tried to keep a straight face, but it was sometimes too much to bear. Most of Spitfire’s injuries had all but healed, but Spitfire herself was another question entirely.

Today, everypony had managed to make an appearance due to it being a weekend. It was now coming to the afternoon and Rainbow was in her usual spot: besides the bed. Soarin and Blazing were talking at the other end of the room and the Lightning Brothers were currently asleep on one of the benches in the room.

Starfire was also in the room, and was currently sitting opposite Rainbow. She held Spitfire’s hoof in her own, watching over her daughter. Rainbow sighed as she spoke up, “Hey...can I ask a question?”

Starfire looked over at the mare and raised an eyebrow. “What kind of question?” she asked curiously.

Rainbow took a few moments before responding. “What did Spitfire do as a filly?” she asked.

Starfire was slightly confused for a few moments, before she responded, “Oh? She never told you?” she said.

Rainbow shook her head.

Starfire smiled. “Well, besides her racing, Spitfire used to watch so many derbies; sometimes you wouldn't even know what stadium she was at and when! If it was the weekend, Spitfire would get in her race suit and fly with blazing around the home... I miss those days,” she said with a grin, remembering the old memories.

Dash smiled a little at the little story. Looking over to Spitfire, she leaned down and softly kiss her on the forehead. Just then a soft, quiet noise came from outside the hospital room. Everypony in the room turned towards the double doors as they burst open, revealing three doctors as they came up to the bed, talking about things only that they -- or other doctors -- could understand. Soon, they stopped their conversation and the light brown stallion, who Rainbow was familiar with, turned to face her as he spoke up, "Miss Dash, I have some news for you and your friends," he started, waiting until he had the attention of everypony in the room. "As I have said to miss Dash earlier this week, I have been monitoring Spitfire's brain activity. It has been decreasing, and today I feared it would go below a level which would be unlikely to ever return. But somehow in the last few hours, Spitfire's brain levels have increased... but I cannot say for how long. We need her to wake get up now, or we risk losing her forever in this state."

Rainbow looked around the room at all the slightly terrified faces, she felt her breathing hitch slightly and her heart rate start to increase. She spoke up, but her voice slightly frantic. "So w-what are we gonna do," she asked.

The doctor looked back at the two stallions he was with, both gave a small nod, allowing him to continue, "We'll we have a small window of opportunity with her life support detached about twenty minutes at most where we can try and wake her up... It's a life or death risk Miss Dash. The other doctors wanted me to ask Mrs. Starfire for permission to proceed, but I think you have the best idea on what's right for your marefriend."

Rainbow breathed in shakily as she tried to think of an answer. This was all getting too realistic way too fast. Suddenly, Rainbow felt a hoof on her shoulder as she turned up to see Blazing. The stallion smiled and leaned down to whisper. "Dash...if you want to ask for more time, you can...but if you want my advice, I'd say do what you feel is right; don't let anypony force you."

Rainbow was motionless for a few moments as she struggled to find the right answer. Though she wanted to have more knowledge on Spitfire's condition, she also wanted her to wake up normally… not like this! Sighing, she closed her eyes for a few moments as she pondered on the idea. All the ponies in the room waited respectively for the response.

After a few tense moments, Rainbow spoke, "Okay I-I think it's a good Idea," she said, as the doctor nodded. "But...I want to be right here with her."

The doctor smiled. "Well of course, Miss Dash! We will be needing your assistance in this more than ever," he said, watching as Rainbow raised an eyebrow in confusion, before he continued, "Spitfire knows your sound best, if she'll respond to anypony… it's you."

Rainbow Dash nodded confidently. The doctor turned to the other two stallions and nodded, pointing a forehoof towards a few items around the yellow mare on the bed. The doctors came up to the bed and began removing the wires and tubes from some of the machines before taking them away. Dash was about to ask what was going on, but was interrupted when as voice spoke. “Miss Dash, I know you’re scared, but you need to be strong and listen to what I say alright?” the doctor asked calmly.

Dash gave a nod in reply.

Once everything was set, the doctor turned back to the sky blue mare. "Okay, Rainbow Dash, now I need you to just speak to her like you have been doing," he said, slightly anxious about his plan.

Rainbow nodded, before looking over at her fallen marefriend. She gulped hard before speaking softly, "H-Hey Spitfire, it's me, Dashie… Could you help me out with this new trick… I know you’re the best at teaching ponies new tricks, right? J-Just squeeze my hoof, Spitfire… let me know you’re here," she pleaded. Spitfire gave no response, not even a twitch. Rainbow looked up at the doctor who smiled, nodding confidently, urging the mare to continue. As Rainbow looked back over, the doctor looked at the other two stallions who were monitoring something at the other side of the room. They both gave the stallion worried looks.

Rainbow thought for a moment, this wasn't just about reputation or anything… this was about a ponies life! Taking all credibility away from her mind, she spoke again, "Spitfire, I love you more than anything! I love you more than life itself! I love you more than flying! And if i could… I’d give up my wings again just to see you wake up… and I don't care if this sounds cliché or sappy! I love you more than anything, Spitfire, and it's not your time to leave. Please try and do anything to tell me you're still here… Spitfire, think about all the things we've done, and we've been through… I would go through all of it again, take the press or even get kicked out of the Bolts just to be with you every night… I just want to feel you hold me again; tell me that I'm being too stressed or too stupid… Please, Spitfire, just come back to us, we all miss you, Spitfire. Just… please?"

At the far end of the room, the rest of the team waited anxiously. Misty looked over at Soarn, who looked as if he was about to run out of the room in fear. She wrapped a wing around the stallion. Soarin looked over at Misty, giving her a small smile for comfort. Misty smiled back as the pair looked back towards the bed.

The doctor again looked over at his accomplices, the raised their eyebrows and nodded over at him. The doctor smiled as he turned back to Dash. "Come on, Miss Dash, she's responding better to that."

At the sound of this Rainbow let loose and just poured her heart out to the mare. "Spitfire, I know you can hear me a-and I'm telling you right now that I can't lose you! You mean more to me than anything in this world and you mean a lot not just to me but to everypony else in this room… you can't leave me, Spitfire. Y-You saved my life and I can't go on knowing that I can't pay you back for it…Spitfire please…just please let me know your here!"

The room fell quiet again as everypony looked at each other in a worried expressions. The doctor looked back up at his accomplices a final time, the two ponies gave each other solom looks, before shaking their heads at the doctor. Rainbow looked up as she watched the doctors exchange sad looks between each other; it was then she realised what had happened.

“NO-NO-NO, SHE CAN’T DIE! SHE CAN’T!” Rainbow Dash screamed. Blazing trotted over as he extended a wing out to hug the mare. Dash turned and wrapped one of her forehooves around the stallion. She felt as if her every being, everything she’d lived for… her purpose had been painfully ripped out from her…she felt hollow and dark… She just cried, hoping she could just leave this horrible place…

But then...something touched Rainbow’s hoof. She gasped alerting all the mourning ponies in the hospital room. Rainbow immediately let go of Blazing as her eyes traveled downwards to see a golden hoof resting on top of her own on the bed.

All the doctors rushed over as Spitfire began to murmur quietly, her face began to twitch slightly as she moved her head slowly from side to side like a filly being woken up before she wanted too. Rainbow kept a firm grip on Spitfire’s hoof and her tears were starting to turn hopeful as she felt the weak squeezes in return from her love.

Suddenly, Spitfire’s movements stopped. But then something else began to happen…

Spitfire felt her eyes slowly open as a dark feeling from her eyes seemed to fade, she felt slightly sick and disoriented, but slightly relieved that she didn’t feel any pain from before. Her eyes were hazy and very blurry, they also felt heavy which meant she had a hard time opening them. Suddenly, a white light flashed down, blinding her entirely she tried to move a forehoof. She groaned slightly from the stinging sensation it brought to her eye. But then, the light was suddenly cut out. Spitfire’s vision started to come back again and she realised a giant blue wing was now covering her face blocking out the light. As Spitfire’s vision finally readjusted, she saw her marefriend looking down on her, joyful tears falling from her muzzle and cheeks as a large smile adorned her face.

Rainbow leaned in as she spoke in a soft tone, “Hey Spitfire, how are you feeling?” she asked quietly.

Spitfire grinned as she looked up at the sky blue mare. “Well...I feel like horeshit...but it’s good to see you're okay baby,” she said, caressing Rainbow’s cheek lightly with her weak forehoof. Rainbow couldn’t contain her happiness anymore and leaned in as the pair shared a deep kiss. Rainbow began to cry even more tears of joy as their tongues dances together passionately…she never wanted it to stop. When they finally parted Rainbow grinned retracting her wing as Spitfire was opened to a whole knew scenery of white walls and many ponies filling the small room.

Spitfire’s eyes widened when her brain managed to catch up to her whereabouts, “Guys?” she asked getting everypony’s attention. “H-How long exactly was I out?” she asked curiously.

Starfire grinned. “Well young filly in your antics you have caused a lot of trouble, you’ve been in a coma for weeks sweetheart...and a few moments ago we thought you were gone,” she explained, coming round to the end of the bed as she held Spitfire’s hoof.

The golden mare smiled happily as she nuzzled her mother lovingly before turning to Dash and doing the same, she then spied Blazing smiling from the corner of the room. She raised an eyebrow, “What are you looking at?” she asked playfully towards her brother.

Blazing smiled as he trotted over to hug his sister lightly, “welcome back sis, you had me worried I’m not gonna lie.”

Spitfire smiled. “Well I like keeping ponies on the edge,” she said looking round the room of happy and relieved faces. Everypony gave out a small chuckle in response.

The doctor watched as his accomplices leave, he then turned back to the group of ponies, smiling widely. “Well I’m glad everything worked out...but we still need to monitor Spitfire for the rest of the night just incase.

Spitfire rolled her eyes. “Whatever you say, doc,” she said. The stallion nodded happily before trotting out of the room.

As time moved on ponies left one by one, saying their goodbyes and best wishes for Spitfire’s speedy recovery. Rainbow, however, still stayed happily next to Spitfire, a warm glow now seemed to radiate from her body. She was relieved that it was all finally over.

Spitfire yawned, stretching out her hooves as she started to feel sleep coming over her. She heard a mare chuckle, and looked over to see Rainbow Dash. “What’s so funny?” she asked quizzically.

Rainbow smiled. “Well, don’t you think you’ve had enough sleep already?” she asked as she began to giggle again. It wasn’t long before Spitfire found herself joining Rainbow in a fit of hysteria.

Spitfire sighed happily, her chest still hurting from their little giggle fit. She smiled as she layed down on the bed, and began to close her eyes. Rainbow smiled and leaned back on the cloud chair, about to close her own eyes as well… when she heard a soft whisper.

“Hey, Rainbow?”

Dash opened one eye as she looked over in the darkened room. She saw the faint outline of her marefriend with a wing extended and a pocket of space now existing on the bed. Rainbow smiled as Spitfire continued, “Come on theres room for one more.”

The sky blue mare grinned happily as she trotted over and snuggled into the bed with her marefriend. Spitfire wrapped her wing over her comfortingly, giving her a soft kiss on her muzzle. Rainbow smiled as she cuddled up to Spitfire, overjoyed she could be sharing this experience with her marefriend again… but there was still one last hurdle they had to overcome…

To be continued…
