Po-Ni-Oh!: The Wicked Duels

Thousands of years ago when Equestria was still young, ancient rulers used to play a game of shadows. The rulers would summon mighty monsters to battle for their entertainment. One day, an evil Sorcerer tried to use the monsters to take over Equestria. But a group of heroes stopped him and saved them. Thousands of years later, the ancient game was now made into a modern card game called ‘Duel Monsters’. Duel Monsters started to spread throughout all of Equestria but sadly the monsters themselves also joined with the cards that were once stone slabs and so some cards contained not a simple picture with numbers but also a true beast laid at the center of them. Two of the most well known monsters at the time was the nearly unbeatablel Red Eyes Black Dragon. A powerful monster whose flame could melt even the toughest metals. The other monster was the Blue Eye White Dragon who could be seen in the light of the moon as his scales shined off of it. These two were the strongest Dragon-type monsters that have ever existed. The only two ponies able to wield them were the unicorn Sombra Nightshade and his teacher and duel partner Celestia each wielded their respective monster in battle, Celestia used Blue Eyes and Sombra Red Eyes.

“Alright. Blue Eyes White Dragon, attack Battle Ox with White Lightning!” Celestia ordered her massive beast. The Dragon smirked before he launched a powerful blast from his mouth at the armored steer, blowing it apart.

“Alright, your turn Sombra.” She said to him.

“Alright. First, I equip my Red Eyes with Dragon Nails.” He said as he placed the spell on his duel disk. Then the hands of the shadowy Dragon were covered in steel. “Now Red Eyes, attack Cyber Tech Alligator with Inferno Fire Blast!” He ordered the Dragon. Red Eyes nodded as he opened his mouth and fired off a fireball the size of a carriage. Cyber Tech Alligator was no more once the fire dissipated. The two colts that lost just stared slack jawed with how easy they were just beaten. As the battle concluded Celestia held out her Blue Eyes card and her dragon returned to it. Sombra did the same for his Red Eyes and it returned as well.

“Well I had a blast Sombra. And I bet Blue Eyes had fun blasting as well.” She said to her friend happily.

“I bet Red Eyes had fun as well.” Sombra said as he looked at his card and saw the roaring Dragon.

“Sombra, I hope our friendship never ends.” Celestia said to the unicorn.

“I hope so as well.” He said back to her and with that the two ponies left for their respective kingdoms once more.

You two should seriously get a room and hook up I’m telling you. Red Eyes told him mentally in his distorted voice. Sombra blushed at the comment due to only Red Eyes knowing what awaited them in their living quarters. As he got to his room, he placed his deck and duel disk on the coffee table.

I had fun dueling Sombra. Why don’t you do it more often? He heard Red Eyes ask him.

“I have a life also. Dueling doesn’t have to be everything I do.” Sombra replied as he headed for his fridge.

But with every duel, our bond becomes stronger and stronger. The Dragon said boldly.

“But we do have a strong bond already. Dueling doesn’t need to happen with us 24/7.” He said back. If Red Eyes was actually in the room he would’ve rolled his eyes before asking the question that hung in the room.

So when will you ask her bro? The Dragon asked him. Sombra just groaned as he fell back onto his bed.

“Oh, I don’t know. She’s cool, but I don’t think I’m her league Red Eyes. She’s a princess and I’m just a normal Unicorn.”

Dude last I checked you are not only a prince of a kingdom but you also are my dueler. If she wasn’t meant to be with you she wouldn’t be my brother’s dueler. Red Eyes said proudly. Duelers were not like the others who played the game being that they can commune with certain cards and said cards bond with them. Sombra chuckled a little as he remembered that little fact.

“I wonder what Celestia is doing right now?” Sombra wondered as he closed his curtains and turned off his light for the night.

Back at Canterlot Castle, Celestia was sitting at the foot of her bed, looking through her deck.

Missing something Celly? Blue Eyes White Dragon asked her in his deep, baritone voice as he tried to get up but then remembered he was still in his card. Both of them chuckled a little at this fact.

“Nah. Just looking through my deck. It’s amazing that I was able to make this myself.” She replied as she smiled.

Well you’re a good duelist so I don’t see why. Blue Eyes said with a mental smile making Celestia giggle a bit.

“You always know what to say Blue Eyes. I’m glad we met.” She said with a smile as she rubbed the card of Blue Eyes.

If I didn’t we never would’ve been chosen to work together Celly.

“Oh Blue Eyes stop you're making me blush!” Celestia said as she looked out into the moon and sighed. “It’s been twenty years you know.” She said as her voice turned sad.

I’ve been sad about it ever since Celly. But you had to do it. She wasn’t herself. He said sadly as she placed him next to her.

“I know. But she was possessed by them. I needed to..to-” She started. But then she started to lightly cry.

Please don’t cry Celly. You’re gonna make me cry. He said to her as he tried to comfort her with words due to him not having a physical body. I know it was a tough choice but trust me there wasn’t any other way to do this. Blue Eyes said comfortingly. Celestia smiled at her card and soon put it on her table away from her cards.

“Good night Blue Eyes.” Celestia said as she turned her own lights off and drifted to sleep.

As Sombra slept, he was scared. For all he saw, was shadow.

“W-what’s going on? Where am I?” He asked himself as he looked around.

Sombra?! Where are you?! He heard Red Eyes yell.

“I’m over here!” He yelled back. Sombra smiled when he saw his Dragon’s red eyes come towards him. Wait my Dragon was out of his card? Sombra thought to himself. Red Eyes soon realized this as well and started to notice his claws himself.

Sombra what the Tartarus is going on? Red Eyes asked before a bright flash appeared beside them.

ShE wIlL aBaNdOn YoU. A deep raspy voice called out.

“W-what? Who said that?” He asked out into the shadows.

HeR mOnStEr WiLl DeStRoY yOu BoTh. A wicked but bold voice said.

“Who? Whose monster?” He asked out again.

YoU’lL bE nOtHiNg BuT a ShElL. Two demonic voices said. Red Eyes soon became infuriated and started shooting Inferno Fire Blasts in every direction.

SHOW YOURSELVES COWARDS! Red Eyes roared.

You are the coward brother. A familiar voice rang out. Red Eyes and Sombra both turned with shocked looks towards the origin of the voice. It was the Blue Eyes White Dragon.

B-brother, why? Why would you say that? Red eyes asked.

Because you’re nothing more than a little hatchling. You were always pathetic! Blue Eyes said angrily.

“No! Blue Eyes this isn’t like you!” Sombra yelled. The Dragon merely snorted and shot out a blast of White Lightning towards Sombra who dodged it at the last minute.

Stay out of this equine. Besides your marefriend has something to tell you Blue Eyes said as he moved over to the left. Then coming into view was Celestia who had a look of disgust on her face.

“Celestia, what’s going-” He started.

“Shut it Sombra!” She said angrily making him step back.

“C-Celestia, why did Blue Eyes attack us?” He asked. Celestia threw her head back and laughed at him as he just stood there stumped.

“You really are an idiot aren’t you? He attacked you because I told him to do so.” Celestia said as she started to walk towards her Dragon and flew up on top of it. “It’s a pity he missed because I would’ve loved to hear you scream in pain. Music to my ears.” She said as she smiled. Sombra then fell to his knees and started to cry.

Celestia was now frightened for her life. She was running in complete shadows from two monsters. One of them was a nightmarish version of Red Eyes Black Dragon who shot Inferno Fire Blasts at her. And the other was her supposed friend Sombra who looked like a monster.

“Thats right Celestia! RUN FROM YOUR BETTER! LIKE YOU ALWAYS HAVE!” Sombra shouted at the retreating mare. Celestia continued to run from him but was soon trapped by a wall of pure shadow and the two monsters had her cornered. But then as Red Eyes charged up another blast, Blue Eyes bursted from the shadows and tackled Red Eyes to the ground.

LEAVE CELESTIA ALONE! Blue Eyes roared as he swiped at his brother with his claws. But then Red Eyes kicked him in the stomach sending him into the air.

Oh brother, you never learn. Red Eyes said as he rose from where he was tackled. As the two Dragons prepared to fight. Sombra approached Celestia who was scared out of her mind.

“S-Sombra what are you doing?” Celestia asked the imposing stallion. Sombra just smirked as he leaned forward to grab her. As he did so however his hand suddenly sizzled and he reared back in pain at the same time the false Red Eyes did.

YOU ARE NOT RED EYES! Blue Eyes yelled as he sank his teeth into the neck of the monster trying to pretend to be his brother.

“Celestia, I hope that you remember this.” Sombra said as he approached Celestia. Taking his hand, he tilted her head so he could see her neck. “Because this will be the last thing you see.” He said as his teeth turned into fangs. He then opened his mouth and reached for her neck making her scream. But then, a barrage of White Lightning shot Sombra in the back making him roar. But then, Celestia’s eyes shot open as she rose from her bed. She suddenly turned over to her Blue Eyes card who said exactly what she was thinking.

SOMBRA AND RED EYES! WE NEED TO GET TO THEM NOW! Blue Eyes said as Celestia got her cards, including Blue Eyes, and her Duel Disk and flew towards the Crystal Empire where Sombra was living. They arrived just as Sombra was apparently about to die by the hands, or claws, of whatever nightmare versions of her and Blue Eyes was lurking in his mind. Celestia started to shake the unicorn who woke up with a start. He looked at her but Celestia saw that this wasn’t Sombra. His eyes instead of being the normal red like they always were, the white parts of his eyes were now bright green.

“S-Sombra?” She asked hoping that he was okay.

“Yes. But not the weak pathetic Sombra you knew.” He replied as his horn glowed. But then before Celestia could react, the two were teleported to the top of the Crystal Castle. Sombra also retrieved their clothes magically and allowed Celestia to put hers on he did with his own uniform.

“Sombra, why are you doing this?” She asked him.

“Because I know why you never wanted to duel against me! You always thought I was weak and pathetic! But I’ll prove I’m the best duelist in Equestria!” He roared as he placed his duel disk on. But then his duel disk turned a nightmarish black and one half became sharper than a sword. As this happened both of their Dragons took on spectral bodies as to communicate with each other.

“Sombra please don’t do this. Our friendship-” She started.

“TO TARTARUS WITH OUR FRIENDSHIP!” He roared.

Brother what is- Blue Eyes started.

Brother? I see no brother before me. Only a weak Dragon whose shadow I will never be free of. NOW BE SILENT AND BATTLE US! Red Eyes yelled at him. Blue Eyes took a step back in surprise. Red Eyes was never like this before. Whatever they had seen in their dreams must have broken them. They never saw through the illusions of the creatures that tormented them.

“B-but Sombra, we’re friends. We’ve been friends ever since we were younger.” Celestia said to him.

“Celestia, when I first met you I never meant for us to just be mere friends. I wanted us to be more than that. Princess Celestia, I loved you.” He said making her gasp in shock. “I’ve had a crush on you for years Celestia. I was even going to give you this.” He told her as he reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small black box and when he opened it, inside was a ring with a gold band and in the center a diamond surrounded by smaller ones. Celestia felt tears come to her eyes as she saw the ring in all its glory.

“It doesn’t matter anymore.” Sombra growled as he crushed the ring with his bare hands and tossed its remains to the winds. Celestia felt tears flow from her cheeks.

“S-Sombra. W-why are you doing this?” She sobbed.

“For what you and Blue Eyes did to me. You and that beast nearly killed me and Red Eyes. Now, I’ll face you in a duel to prove that I’m the best.” He said angrily.

Celestia- She heard Blue Eyes start to say. As much as it pains me to say this, but we need to defeat them. She couldn’t believe what Blue Eyes just said. It wasn’t the fact that she had to duel Sombra on top of a castle but the fact that she was reliving Nightmare Moon all over again and she knew how this would end once and for all. Celestia sighed in sadness.

“Very well Sombra. LET’S DUEL!”

“I’ll set one card face down and end my turn.” He said as he placed a card upside down on the field.

“My turn.” Celestia said somberly as she drew a card. “I summon to the field Feral Imp and equip it with Sword Of Dark Destruction and Horn Of The Unicorn.”

A small little creature with green fur with a pink horn and pink claws appeared on the field. Its eyes were a bright green and it howled like a monkey as it stared at Sombra.

A light in the imp’s hand appeared and when it dimmed, a evil looking sword with a red curved blade appeared and crackled with blue electricity as it surged with power appeared. The horn on the imp disappeared and was replaced by a new more pointed horn which also sparked with power boosting the imp’s power far past the Dragonute on the field’s own attack.

“FERAL IMP ATTACK DRAGONUTE! DARK ELECTRIC SLASH!” She ordered the imp. Then with a vicious howl, the imp charged its opponent and slashed it with the sword in its hand making it disappear.

Sombra merely grunted as his monster was destroyed.”I now place one card face down and end my turn” Celestia said as she placed her card into the magic/trap slot and it appeared on the field.

“MY TURN!” Sombra yelled as he drew another card to his hand and smirked.

“I activate the magic of Change Of Heart!”

Feral Imp shrugged it’s shoulders as it flapped open it’s wings and flew over to Sombra’s side of the field as he smirked at his good fortune. “I also activate Premature Burial!” Sombra yelled and grunted as his life points were drained a little.

At the ground in front of Sombra the Dragonute popped out of a grave and stood in attack position.

“Now I sacrifice Feral Imp and my Axe Dragonute to summon forth, MY RED EYES BLACK DRAGON!” He said as the two monsters disappeared from the field.

“NOW RED EYES, ATTACK HER WITH INFERNO FIRE BLAST!” Sombra roared. Red Eyes roared in fury as his mouth ignited and launched a fireball at Celestia.

“Oh no.” Sombra said in surprise.

“I then sacrifice my Kaibaman to summon, BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGON!”

This legendary dragon is a powerful engine of destruction. Virtually invincible, very few have faced this awesome creature and survived.

Then emerging onto the field was a massive Dragon who had pure white scales and bright blue eyes. On its back were massive wings and its head was ridged.

“NOW BLUE EYES, ATTACK RED EYES BLACK DRAGON WITH WHITE LIGHTNING!” Celestia screamed. Blue Eyes roared in defiance as it charged it’s attack and launched it at the Red Eyes across from him.

“Not so fast Celestia! Reveal face down! Mirror Force!

Then a transparent mirror formed around Red Eyes making Sombra smile.

“I ACTIVATE SEVEN TOOLS OF THE BANDIT!” She yelled as she placed a card on her duel disk leaving no more cards in her hand.

The mirror cracked until it shattered and the blast from Blue Eyes incinerated the black dragon.

Sombra roared in irritance as he saw his monster get destroyed. “I-I’m not done Sombra.” Celestia said. “I activate the trap card Reverse Of Reverse.”

A strange equine appeared and pointed at the card that Sombra laid Face Down. It came up as Monster Reborn.

“Sombra! How long have you had that card?!” Celestia asked him.

“Long enough my love.” Sombra snarled at her. Celestia just stared at the new beast.

A large, green crystal ball then was wrapped around by the Dragonute’s tail.

“Now my Dragonute, ATTACK BLUE EYES WITH SPIRAL LANCE STRIKE!” He ordered his beast. Then with a small but primal roar, the Dragonute did as it was ordered and charged at the massive Dragon. With a thrust of his lance, Blue Eyes dissipated from the field.

Celestia grunted as she saw her Dragon being destroyed before her eyes.

“It appears I am one of the few who have survived your little pet Celestia!” Sombra said with a demonic laugh. Then before Celestia could say anything, a bright flash of light appeared in front of her and Sombra making them cover their eyes. When the light dimmed, she was shocked at what she saw. It was a humanoid creature with light skin and its hair was blonde and spiky. The back of his hair though was red and black and it wore a blue suit. It was as tall as Celestia too.

“WHAT IS THIS!” Sombra roared.

“This is the end of your little shadow game Sombra!” The figure shouts as he turned towards the dark unicorn. “I’m willing to help if you want Celestia.” He offered her but then he heard the hissing of a familiar Dragon.

YOU! Red Eyes yelled as it saw who he was. The human smirked as he took up his own duel disk.

“I see you remember me old friend. However this little duel has gone on for far to long!” The human yelled. “Now Sombra, I’m afraid your duel is over!” He said making Sombra laugh.

“Really? What are you going to do to make it end?” Sombra asked as he laughed.

“Simple. I summon to the field Dark Magician Girl!”

A strange looking human appeared and tried to be stand but ended up dropping her wand as she tried to grab it. Sombra laughed at the girl.

“Really? This is supposed to worry me?!” Sombra roared in laughter but Red Eyes suddenly became worried.

“It should Sombra. I now activate Sage’s Stone!”

“NOW DARK MAGICIAN GIRL ATTACK HIS LANCER DRAGONUTE! DARK MAGIC ATTACK!” The human yelled. Then the female human launched a green, electric ball at the Dragonute, making it explode.

DAMN YOU PHARAOH! Red Eyes roared at him. The human just glared at Sombra.

“I place two cards face down and end my turn.” He said as he placed his cards into his duel disk and they appeared on the field.

“Alright Sombra, my move!” Celestia said as she drew a card. “I activate the spell Monster Reborn!”

Sombra was now not only enraged but now he was worried due to him having no cards left to save him this time. “N-NOW LANCER DRAGONUTE! ATTACK SOMBRA DIRECTLY WITH SPIRAL LANCE!” She ordered the monster.

“NO! THIS CAN’T BE! I’M THE STRONGER ONE NOT HER!” Sombra roared.

“Face it Sombra, this is the end of you. Now Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl, DARK MAGIC ATTACK!” The human ordered his monsters. Then both of the creatures shot out from the wands two, mighty blasts.

“IT’S THE END SOMBRA!” The human yelled. As the monsters’ attacks all converged on him Sombra only gave a look of pure malice towards Celestia and then roared with all his wrath.

“I HATE YOU CELESTIA! I HOPE YOUR SOUL SUFFERS BECAUSE OF THIS!” He yelled just as the attacks finally collided with him Red Eyes also appeared.

DAMN YOU CELESTIA! DAMN YOU BLUE EYES! DAMN YOU BOTH TO TARTARUS! WHENEVER I SEE YOU AGAIN I’LL INCINERATE BOTH OF YOU! Red Eyes roared at the top of his lungs as he dissolved into shadow.

“HEAR ME CELESTIA! I’LL RETURN!” Sombra yelled as the ground below them suddenly became green and a strange symbol appeared.

“CELESTIA WE HAVE TO GET OFF THIS BEFORE THE SEAL IS COMPLETE! SUMMON BLUE EYES NOW!” The human yelled as Celestia just nodded and summoned her Dragon that the human climbed up on and flew away with Celestia in tow using her own wings. As they turned around to see what happened all that greeted them was a flash of green light and it disappeared along with the two it trapped within itself.

“SOMBRA!” Celestia yelled.

RED EYES! Her Dragon roared. The three then started to talk as they flew through the sky.

“Thank you for helping me. Although I wish we could’ve saved them.” She said to him sadly.

“Do not feel bad Celestia. For Sombra and Red Eyes weren’t themselves.” The human said trying to cheer her up.

“But I know I could’ve save both of them! Instead what have I to show but my once future husband gone and my Dragon has lost his own brother!” Celestia snapped at him. The human merely nodded solemnly as the Blue Eyes landed on a nearby land mass. When it landed he leaped off the back of the Dragon and started to walk off but not before Celestia ran up and gave him a weak smile.

“Well, I guess it wasn’t entirely my fault. But I could’ve done something.” Celestia said.

“Celestia, a dark energy flowed through them. So they would’ve done something if you didn’t duel them.” The human said.

“You’re right. Thank you.” She said back to him making him smile.

“You’re most welcome.” He said back. Then, a bright light appeared and he started to walk towards it.

“Wait!” She said making him turn around. “What is your name?” She asked him with curiousness in her voice..

“Just call me…. Yami.” He said with a smile. He then walked towards the light and soon vanished leaving Celestia and Blue Eyes alone in the Crystal Empire.

Yami, I’ll remember you. Celestia thought with a smile.
