A thousand years of passed and now Duel Monsters is at its peak as the best card game in Equestria. Ponies of all ages now play the great card game. And in every city lies a card shop. And in Ponyville, the card shop is widely considered to be one of the best in all of Equestria. The card shop is smaller than any of the others but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. Behind the viewing glass lied amazing and rare cards that ponies have been trying to get their hands on for a long time. The owner of the shop, Deck Dealer, was a pegasus stallion well past his prime and a once great duelist himself. One of the most common groups that visited him were-

“HI DECK DEALER!” The CMC who appeared just on their usual time.

“Oh hello girls. How are you today?” He asked them in his deep and raspy voice.

“Good. We were wondering if you had any new cards in today.” Scootaloo replied.

“As a matter of fact I do.” He said with a smile as he reached for a box that was behind him. He then took the box and placed it gently in front of the three fillies. “Feel free to look.” He said with a smile. And with that said, the girls opened the box and began to search through the box.

“So what do you think? See any good ones?” He asked.

“Yeah. Really good ones.” Sweetie said with a smile on her face.

“Girls I need to ask, do you know how to play Duel Monsters?” He asked the three. The trio suddenly snapped their heads up with a look of confusion on their faces as they realized they had a bare grasping of the rules of the game.

“Um… not really?” Scootaloo said with an embarrassed look on her face. Deck Dealer chuckled a little bit as he got out from behind the counter and placed a playing field on a nearby desk.

“Would you like me to teach you?” He asked.

“Y-ya’d do that for us?” Applebloom asked.

“Of course. For three of my favorite customers. But first we need to get you three a starter deck.” He replied as he walked back to the counter. He then grabbed many decks and placed it in front of the girls.

“These are the decks that you can use. They’re each based on a type of monster. Machine, Dragon, Beast, Warrior, Beast Warrior, Spellcaster, Dinosaur, Zombie, Sea Serpent, Fairy, Plant, Insect, Fiend, Thunder, Rock, Psychic, Pyro, Reptile,  Aqua, Fish and Winged Beast. Pick one and then we’ll get started.” He said to the three. Scootaloo walked up first and picked the deck on the far right. “I should’ve known you would choose the Winged Beast deck. Very well come on little one let’s get this over with.” He said as he sat down at the table. Scootaloo quickly followed and sat down at the other end.

“Now Scootaloo, we’ll each start with 2000 life points. Whoever runs out of life points first, loses. But I’ll go easy since you’re a beginner.” He said with a little smile. He then activated the holographic projector on the table and placed his deck on the table as Scootaloo did the same.

“Now Scootaloo, we each draw five cards. On your turn you draw another one. Since I’m teaching, I’ll go first.” He said as he drew a card and placed it in his hand.

“Alrighty. The brown cards in the game are monster cards, the green ones are magic cards, and the pink ones are trap cards. You can activate a trap or spell instantly by placing it on the field or set it face down to keep your opponent wary.” He explained. Scootaloo was impressed by the old stallion’s insight in the game and decided to humor him a little bit.

“Okay old timer. LET’S DUEL!”

“Alright. I draw a card.” He said as he did. “I’ll set one card face down and I’ll summon Silver Fang in attack mode.”

On the field emerged a snow white wolf with a blue nose and solid white eyes.

“Whoa!” Scootaloo said in shock.

“Nice isn’t it? Now when you summon and monster and you go first you cannot attack. And when you summon a monster it needs to be four stars or below. Now I end my turn.” He explained.

“Alright. I now draw.” Scootaloo said as she cautiously drew a card. “I call the Hunter Owl in attack mode.

Onto Scootaloo’s field appeared an owl with tawny feathers and bright yellow eyes. In his talons was a sharpened steel scythe.

“Not bad Scoots but your creature can’t beat mine sadly.” Deck Dealer said as he was chuckling to himself a little bit. Scootaloo recognized this as she just huffed to herself.

“I’ll place two cards face down and end my turn.”

“Alright Scoots. Now Silver Fang, attack her Hunter Owl!” He ordered his monster. The wolf snarled before charging the winged beast and biting it making it disappear.

“Aw man!” Scootaloo said angrily.

“Don’t worry Scootaloo. It was a beginner’s mistake. Everypony makes them. Now I equip Silver Fang with Beast Fangs.

The fangs in the wolf’s mouth grew massive and turned gold and black.

“Oh boy.” Scootaloo said as she stared at the wolf.

She soon perked up as she saw the card in her hands and smirked a little. “I play the magic card Mystical Space Typhoon!”

Deck Dealer watched as a small circling vortex approached his spell and trap zone and destroyed one of his cards.

“Impressive. And you say you don’t know how to play the game.” Deck said with a smile making Scootaloo blush.

“Alright. I then call forth Harpie Lady 1!”

On the field appeared a humanoid creature with light skin, pink hair, a purple bodysuit and green wings. At the end of those wings were eagle-like talons.

“Cool!” Sweetie said as she stared at the monster.

“I also use her special ability to increase her attack points by 300!”

“NOW ATTACK HIS SILVER FANG! TALON SLASH!” She commanded. Then her winged beast took into the skies and dived towards the wolf, slashing it with her talons. The wolf whined in pain before it disappeared.

“Thank you. I now end my turn.” She said back.

This monster moves so fast that it looks like an illusion to mortal eyes.

Then on Deck’s side appeared a beast with brown fur and a dark brown, shaggy mane. In his mouth lied fangs like a lion and a curved horn laid on his head. Silver claws were on his paws, sharpened to a point.

“Ah think that you might have goofed a bit Deck. Your Gazelle is weaker than Scoots’ Harpie.” Applebloom said as she looked at the two monsters.

“Sure Gazelle might be weak, but he’ll be stronger.” Deck said with a sly smile on his face. The trio gave surprised looks on their faces as Deck placed a field spell on the field.

“I activate the field spell Closed Forest!”

Suddenly Deck’s side of the table was covered in thick foliage. Out of the foliage came the sounds of animals. The trio watched as Gazelle ran into the foliage.

Scootaloo just sat there confused.

“Um… we have the same attack power. Doesn’t that mean you can’t attack me now?” Scootaloo asked.

“No. I can attack you, but both our monsters will be destroyed. But I’m not going to attack. I simply place two cards face down." He replied. But before Scootaloo could make her move, the door’s bell rang. The four turned their heads to see the Mane Six come into the shop.

“Hey old timer how’s it hanging?” Rainbow asked Deck Dealer. When Rainbow first walked in to get her starter deck it wasn’t the deck he would’ve suspected. He immediately thought she would chose the Winged Beast deck but instead she chose the Dragon deck instead. All of the Mane Six had started their journey’s as duelists here and they had always impressed him with how well thought out their strategies were.

“Oh hello girls. I’m just teaching the youngsters how to play Duel Monsters.” He replied.

“Really. Oh how nice of you.” Rarity said with a smile.

“Aw shucks. Thank you. Go ahead and take a seat. Scootaloo was about to make her move.” He said as he pointed to some spare chairs. The Mane Six then grabbed the chairs and sat down.

“So ‘Bloom, what’s the duel so far?” Applejack asked her sister.

“Well Deck’s got a Gazelle in that forest and Scoots’ got a harpy on the field.” She explained.

“Who’s winning?” Fluttershy asked.

“Deck by 100 Life Points.” Sweetie replied. Rainbow whistled as she noticed how evenly matched Scootaloo and Deck were now. But she also noticed that Gazelle was on the field as well.

“Alright. I activate the equip magic of Rose Whip!”

In the talons of the harpie appeared a long whip covered in thorns.

“Impressive Scootaloo.” Deck said to the young filly.

“Thanks. Now my Harpie Lady, attack Gazelle with Rose Whip Lash!” She ordered her monster. As the beast readied her attack, Deck gave her a smirk.

“What’s so funny?” Scootaloo asked.

“What’s so funny is that I have a little card called Magical Hats.” He replied as he flipped up his face-down card.

During your opponent’s Battle Phase, choose 2 non-Monster Cards from your deck and 1 Monster you control. Shuffle those 3 cards and set them on the field in Defense Position. The 2 cards from your deck are treated as Normal Monster cards (ATK 0/Def 0) and are destroyed at the end of the Battle Phase

Then suddenly three top hats with question marks appeared onto the field. One of them covered Gazelle and the other two just sat on the field. Scootaloo just looked slack jawed but Rainbow just chuckled a little bit.

“Same move that got me in our first duel too.” Rainbow said as Deck just sat back and watched as Scoots tried to pick a hat out of the group.

“Um...eenie meanie-” Scootaloo said as she tried to pick a hat.

“Don’t worry Scootaloo. Just pick one and pray you’re right.” Rainbow said trying to encourage her.

“Harpie Lady, attack the middle hat with Rose Whip Slash!” She ordered her beast. Then with a flick of her wrist, the Harpie sliced the hat in half. Scootaloo smiled when she saw Gazelle disappear.

“Oh. That’s the first time anypony’s ever got my hat trick. Good job Scootaloo.” Deck said as Scootaloo smiled in appreciation.

“I place one card face down and end my turn.”

“My move then.” Deck said as he drew a card from his deck. He sighed as he drew it though. “I activate the magic card Dark Hole. Sorry Scootaloo but it seems this duel will be over soon.”

A dark vortex opened up on the field and sucked up Scootaloo’s Harpie as it screeched.

“MY HARPIE!” Scootaloo screamed as the vortex closed.

“That’s the same move he used on me.” Rarity said as she remembered her duel with him.

“It seems like he’s using all of his skills from his duels with us.” Twilight observed. Deck then activated his face down at which Applejack could only respond with.

“Sorry squirt yer bucked.”

“I activate Monster Reborn.” Deck said.

“Y-you wouldn’t Deck.” She said in shock.

“I’m sorry, but now I must end this. I summon Harpie Lady 1.” He said as the beast appeared.

“Oh man.” Scootaloo said as she watched the monster screech.

“Now I activate her special ability raising her attack points.” He said as the ability activated.

“HARPIE LADY, ATTACK SCOOTALOO WITH TALON SLASH!” He ordered his monster. The Harpie Lady did as ordered and slashed at Scootaloo draining her life points to just barely enough to keep her in the game.

Scootaloo just looked stunned as her own harpie was used against her. Scootaloo just fumbled with the cards in her hand as grasped for anything that could turn the tide… and lady luck shined upon her. “I end my turn your move Scootaloo.”

“Alright Deck, I activate…. THE CHANGE OF HEART!” She said as she placed the card down on her field making everypony in the room gasp.

Scootaloo smiled as she noticed her luck started to turn around. “I choose Harpie Lady!” She yelled as Harpie Lady 1 shook her head and flew over to Scootaloo’s side of the field and took an offensive pose. “ATTACK HIS LIFE POINTS DIRECTLY! TALON SLASH!”

Everypony in the room just stared wide eyed at what they saw.

“N-no way. She b-beat Deck Dealer.” Twilight said in surprise.

“That…. was….. AWESOME!” Rainbow screamed as she headed over to the filly. Then everypony else surrounded her as the young Pegasus smiled.

“I don’t believe it. I won my first game of Duel Monsters.” She said as she smiled.

“Congratulations Scootaloo.” Deck Dealer said as he got up from his seat. “You’re very talented in Duel Monsters.” He said with a little smile.

“Thank you. I hope you’re not mad.” She said to him. The old stallion just chuckled at the young mare a little.

“Why would I be mad youngling? You are one of the few who could beat me even with such weaker monsters then mine.” Deck said.

“Thanks for teaching me Duel Monsters.” She said with a smile.

“You’re most welcome. Now you and the others come back tomorrow and I’ll have decks built for you three.” He said making the three fillies gasp.

“REALLY?!” They asked.

‘Of course. Maybe your cutie marks will include Duel Monsters. Like Scootaloo’s mark.” He replied making Scootaloo’s eyes widen. She looked at her flank and to her surprise, an image was there. The image was a tri colored card indicating her unique talent as a duelist. Scootaloo stared at her new cutie mark for a little bit.

“OH! MY! CELESTIA!!” She shrieked.

“Congratulations Scootaloo.” Rainbow said with a smile.

“Yeah. Especially from me and Sweetie.” Applebloom said. There was silence for a minute before Deck Dealer broke it.

“Now, which of you tikes wants to take a turn at me?”
