Chapter One: Training Kicking In
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
I have no idea how this came to be. First I find myself wanting to join the royal guard to make something of myself. I'm not built like the other cadets so I'm never taken all that seriously. I'm just a simple powder blue Pegasi with a short gray mane. I may look frail, but somehow I have more magical ability than an average Pegasi, with an heart of titanium. My cutiemark that of a scroll with a red ribbon tied around the rolled up parchment. Most ponies were either too stupid or were unwilling to notice the growing dangers in the world. A thousand years and it had been peaceful world wide. Sure... sometimes a dragon came in now and then, but that was nothing compared to when Nightmaremoon returned. Nightmaremoon seemed to be the breaking point in the flood gates. Sure, she was defeated and was returned to the kindhearted Luna, but that just seemed to lead to many other disasters. There were so many, that it just seemed to throw red flags up in my mind. After Discord broke free, that was when I had enough. I was going to lay down my services to fight for my country and my goddesses, even if it meant my life. I suppose that was how it all started anyway.
It was the night Shining Armor was married. Everypony figured that a new head of the guard would need to be chosen after the wedding, seeing as the captain would be a prince and a general of Equestria. I never thought that position would be given to a shrimp like myself. Heck, I wasn't even one of the lead groups. I was one of the cadets prepping for a position in one of the scouting teams that patrolled the castle.
I'm not usually one to talk much about myself, I'm not even one that usually talks, period. I like to keep to myself, and my closest friends. However, if you are willing to listen, just this once, I would like to tell you my story. It all started when a threat was directed toward the Royal wedding...
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
“Prophet! Pssst! You're going to get in trouble!” A dark grey bat pony whispered, trying to get my attention.
Snapping my eyes over to Cylinder Wind, I notice the instructor just beyond him. He had his back turned, but as he went to turn, I returned my gaze about face as his voice made everypony want to flinch at its mere volume, “I am your new Drill Sergent, and you will all address me as such, do you understand?!”
“YES DRILL SERGENT!” We all yelled out at once out of compliance. None of us had yet to be informed why we were suddenly under a new instructor, nor the fact why we were all from different factions. To my right was Cylinder wings, he was a bat pony that I met during our after hours in a local pub. I wasn't much for friends, but I wasn't going to say no to a pony being friendly or nice to me. Which it soon turned into a one sided friendship with him dragging me around to different places he considered fun, while I just tagged along. I can't say it was all bad, I did have fun even though I would argue otherwise if anypony brought it up.
“A threat has currently been issued against Canterlot, the Princesses, and the Royal wedding! This is where you pathetic whelps come in! It is all hooves on deck, and this is where you maggots get a fleeting chance of being on the front lines even though you are still in poop stained diapers!” The Drill Sargent paused long enough to glance across the cadets, before continuing, “Do as I say, and maybe you fools can stay alive if there is an attack! Is that understood?”
“YES, DRILL SARGENT!”
I may not be a unicorn, but I practiced many bodily magics with a mare named Zacora. I figured long ago that if there was any means to fighting my weak stature, it would be with knowledge. I was a literate at heart, but for some reason, I felt like I wanted.., no... I needed to protect my country. Like if I wouldn't be there, the whole of creation would fall to the sinister monsters that lurched in the dark. I can still remember my teachers words, “Sometime the heart is our guide, and we must abide. For our instinct is sometimes from the world beyond.”
Sure that last part didn't rhyme, but nonetheless it told true. It was like I was being told when and where to be. Then again it could be my long lineage of royal guard pegasi, and my heritage telling me I should follow in my families hoof steps despite my physique.
“Are you paying attention, SOLDIER?!” The Drill Sargent bellowed, stepping right in front of me.
“Sir, yes sir!” I yelled out, determining how close his face was to mine that he was most definitely talking to me.
“By no means will I go easy on you cadet! Drop and give me fifty!” He stated, turning away.
Oh... did I forget to mention this pompous idiot was my father? It was probably what he meant by saying he wouldn't go easy on me. Which he was definitely making it easy to believe. “F-fifty?” I managed to stutter, “But in training we haven't gotten past twenty...” I absentmindedly retorted.
“Are you talking back, soldier?!” Drill Sargent scowled as he jerked around, with a harsh scowl on his face.
I knew my father well, and he took his job, as well as the safety of everypony, seriously. He wasn't harsh, or even an angry pony, he just didn't take his job lightly. I would have to say after mom died, he just kind of turned toward his work. Even though I can normally see past his poker face, like right now he doesn't want to be harsh on me, but work is work. However, when I told him that I wanted to join the royal guard, he was positively emotionless. I can't tell if he was proud I was following in the family hoofsteps, or if he was absolutely terrified that I was going to fail and die.
“Soldier!” Drill Sargent hissed once more, and I could tell he was holding back. Was he going easy on me, and the fifty push ups was just a show for the others?
Deciding not to find out, I dropped down and began counting, “One Drill Sargent... Two Drill Sargent...”
Glancing up I could see the relief on his face. I was sure it was just a show for the others, I would just need to obey his commands and he would go easy on me. At least I hope he would.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
I let out a sigh, my body barely reacting to my commands. My dad often trained me while I was young, but that was more on how to fight. I was rather talented at fighting, just as my ancestors before me, but no matter how hard I worked, my body just didn't seem to retain any muscle. I heard a chuckle, followed by hoofsteps catching up to me, “I thought for sure your dad would cut you a break, but I guess not...”
Groaning at Cylinder Wind, I shook my head, “No, he was... It was just to show the others so no pony would get jealous...”
At that, Cylinder just seemed to halt, a little baffled, “I would hate to see what he does to the others then...”
A short laugh escaped as I glanced over, “Look, my dad is a good guy, he just takes his job seriously, and this threat to the castle has him stressed out. Just do as he says, when he says it, and he will be fair with you.”
“Thanks for the heads up!” Cylinder chuckled, sticking out his tongue at me, “Hey! Want to hit the Royal Guards special bar?”
“W-what? Why?” I stuttered, glaring at the fool bat pony for even bringing it up.
“We aren't technically cadets. We have been drafted to the Royal Guard at least for the time being. We have passes to that bar, and I intend to get my free drink!” Cylinder took to the air, before flying up ahead of me and turning around, landing and blocking my path, “Come with me! Who knows, we might find some sexy mares to flirt with!”
Letting out an audible and over exaggerated sigh, I roll my eyes, “And why would any mare talk to us? We are just new recruits...”
“We have the armor, we just need to act the part! They don't have to know we are new!” Cylinder snickered, a sly grin on his muzzle.
Using my hoof, I pushed my friend out of the way and continue walking, “I come from a long family line of Royal Guards. I grew up around these ponies, and for one, I would be recognized by quite a few of them. Second, each unit spends their entire career together to build the perfect, synchronized trust so they don't need to question command and just rely on the leader. They are like family. Third and utmost, with them being a family, they usually go to the bar as a unit. With it just being the two of us, we would immediately stand out...”
“Hmm...” Cylinder fell quiet once more, but his cocky smile grew right back, “Let's go anyway!”
I froze in my tracks, shooting the fool stallion a hateful glare, “Really now? Did you not hear anything I just said?”
Cylinder giggled, which for a moment sounded awfully colt-like. He bounced into the air until he was once again blocking my path, “Come on! You just said they know you, so wouldn't you be welcome? Plus with your dad being the Drill Sargent, wouldn't it be a good idea to familiarize yourself with his work place, not to mention 'your' future work place?”
Gently laying my hoof over my muzzle, I let out yet another sigh, “Fine!” I snap, my hoof that lay across my muzzle quickly over to point to his chest, “But don't cause a ruckus okay?! You think fifty push ups are a lot, well some of the Earth ponies get up to a thousand push ups without breaking a sweat. You do NOT want to get on their bad side!”
“Fine fine!” Cylinder laughed, sitting on his haunches to wave both hooves idly through the air, “I'll behave myself!”
“Let's go...” I groan as I lead the way to the bar.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
As we pass through the doors, I'm instantly hit with the smell of whiskey, peanuts, and cinnamon. The floors were a dark oak color, most likely riddled and torn with years of stools and hooves scraping across it. A large jukebox sat in the corner playing some sort of western Earth pony music. Most likely due to the large Earth pony stallion currently dropping bit after bit into the large machine. Thankfully nopony seemed to care that we even existed as we approached the bar.
“PROPHET! I haven't seen you since you were neigh high!” A dark musty green mare called out from behind the bar, her hoof currently at work cleaning the inside of a glass.
I fight back a wince, and try to keep a poker face and a fake smile, “Hi Altamira, long time no see.”
“Finally old enough to swig with the big wigs I see! Even getting a chance to be in here. You're here for the threat aren't you, Prophet?” The green mare giggled.
Altamira was an old friend of the family, and I could clearly tell she had aged since the last I saw her. She apparently aged well it seemed, she had a few gray streaks through her hair, but otherwise seemed to be the same Altamira, “Sure thing. My dad is also here, but I assume he is out sorting through the rosters of new cadets.”
The green Earth pony mare glanced in between myself and Cylinder, before looking to me curiously, “Come to think of it, you were never one to like this joint. Why come here all of a sudden?”
Letting out a soft sigh, I grin as I point over to my bat pony friend, “Thank this jokester, his name is Cylinder Wind.”
“Nice to meet you miss, Altamira.” Cylinder bowed in respect.
That was definitely one thing about bat ponies. You don't normally see them around, and whenever you hear about them, everypony thinks they are dark, mean, and mysterious. They do have one thing right, they are mysterious. Cylinder was just like most bat ponies, they had a great deal of humor, as well as a great deal more of respect. They bow to everypony upon meeting them, and they wont hesitate to help anypony. They were probably the nicest specie of pony you could ever meet. It was a shame that a ponies first instinct is to judge by looking at them. It may just be a instinct to protect yourself, I assume. Judging somepony to see if they can be trusted, and if you need to watch your back, but it isn't exactly fair. It's like my motto, you need to be warily trusting. Trust them from the get go, but just keep an eye out to make sure they don't mean you harm. Keep them at arms length in other words.
“Well, in all of Faust's good name, you must be somepony special to get this wound up drift wood to spend time in a social scene; willingly I might add!” Altamira giggled as she slid two glasses across the table, amply filling them a third with whiskey, “Here, bottoms up for your free drink.”
Climbing up onto the stool, Cylinder smiled as he took the glass in his hoof, “Through the teeth, over the gums, watch out stomach, here it comes!” And just like that he turned the glass bottoms up, downing the dark liquid in one gulp. After slamming down the glass, he hissed and his nose scrunched up.
Hesitantly climbing up onto the stool, I pulled the glass toward me. Cylinder and Altamira both watched me, and I could tell they were waiting to see my reaction. I turned my gaze downward as I took a sniff. Jerking away, I coughed as to clear my air way. Altamira and Cylinder both laughed, but it was the green Earth bartender to speak, “First drink, hun?”
Gently nodding, I take the glass in my hoof. Taking a steady breath, I murmur, “Here goes nothing, I suppose...” And down it went. I swear I never tasted anything so vile in my entire life. It was like downing a bottle of dragons scroll fire essence. It was a magical potion that allowed a pony a single magical letter to be sent to a pony by choice. I've only done it once, but it only slightly compared to whiskey. Instantly I could feel my head slightly swirling, but barely managing to keep a straight head.
“Can't hold yer liquor, hun?” Altamira giggled as she brought out a can of regular sarsaparilla and slid it toward me, “Here, this should ease the burn.”
I didn't hesitate to down the bottle, and she was correct. The burn slowly subsided and I gasped in relief. Cylinder chuckled beside me, patting me on the back, “Maybe it will help you relax for once.”
Sticking out my tongue, I end in a short laugh, “You relax... I'm happy just the way I am.”
Suddenly, both Cylinder and myself winced as a glass shattered against the floor behind us. Swirling around on the stool, we could see a Pegasi stallion being pinned against the wall. The pony pinning him was a large Earth pony, and he seemed to be pissed about something, and also inebriated.
Altamira sighed as she circled around the bar, “Not in my bar, take it outside!”
“Shut it bartender! I wont break anything, well... except this colts face!” The Earth pony smirked, aiming his hoof to punch at the Pegasi.
“Then you wont be able to drink here anymore, I'm sorry, but you are the Royal Guard. There is no reason for this, you know better!” Altamira scowled, nearing the pony built like a mountain.
“Screw the guard, I'm retiring soon anyway!” The stallion grinned and went to throw the punch.
I have no idea why I reacted the way I did. Maybe the whiskey, maybe all the training that I went through with my father as a colt, or maybe it was just from the motherly feeling I felt toward Altamira. Whatever it was, I absentmindedly lurched forward, grabbing hold of the large Earth Ponies arm, “Come on, all she is asking is to take it outside.”
“Puny ponies like you should hold their tongue!” The Earth pony hissed, breathing in my face and making me wince at the strong aroma of halitosis and whiskey.
“Come outside and make me? Or do you even know how to fight?” I grinned wickedly at the stallion.
The stallion chuckled as he released the Pegasi and didn't say a word as I was about to follow him outside. I could feel the whiskey in my system, but from what I've heard about alcohol, I was nowhere near being flat out drunk. Nonetheless, I was clear headed enough to evaluate my opponent, 'he has at least a foot and a half on me. Seeing his size, that is also most likely at least a hundred pounds over me. If needed I have the advantage of flight, but that could be considered unfair. I don't need my wings to beat him-'
My evaluation was cut short as a hoof grabbed me by the arm, “Don't do this Prophet, you have nothing to prove.”
“Altamira, you know for a fact my entire family never lets an unfair fight happen. He has the ability to snap that Pegasi's neck with ease.” Just as I said that, the Pegasi that lay in the floor gulped, rubbing his neck. I couldn't help my small smirk before turning back to Altamira, “Don't worry, I got this.”
“Come on! I don't have all day you pathetic Pegasi!” The Earth pony bellowed, holding the door opened while he waited.
About to head outside, I was halted once more, but this time by Cylinder, “Well, I'm with you on this one. If you need me at any point, just say so. I want to see that Prophet family power I've heard so much about!”
“Cylinder, you're such a goofy ignoramus...” I chuckled teasingly.
“Yeah, but just call this ignor-whats-it if you need him.” Cylinder gave a laugh of his own as he smiled at me.
“Ignoramus.” I smile at him as I led the way outside.
Once outside, the Earth pony pounded his hooves together as he laughed, “Okay, why don't you throw the first punch?”
“No thanks?” I grinned innocently, standing loosely, trying to relax all my muscles so I can use all of my agility.
“Why the hay not? Scared?” The Earth pony seemed to genuinely wonder why.
“Because it's only going to take one punch to take you down.” I keep up the grin, but it was mostly just to show my confidence. To be honest, I knew this fellow. Growing up I came to know all the guards, as well as their fighting records. Awhile back he was in the initial task for for fending off Nightmaremoon. During the fight to get to Celestia, this Earth pony fought and was rendered unconscious. His skull had been fractured, which was rendered a weak spot for rebreak if not for the spell that was in place. I wasn't going to bash in his skull, which I could if I wanted too, but with my training with Zacora taught me a way to expel magic with the touch of a hoof. All I need is to dispell that magic in his head, and it'll send him into shock, making his body assume that his skull was in fact bashed in.
“Awful sure of yourself kid... I'll fix that!” Without another word, the Earth pony lurched forward and I merely side jumped out of the way. It was simple enough dodging an overmuscled Earth pony, but this guy was deeply inebriated to boot.
He went careening into a nearby cart of hay and he started to fumble to his hooves. Closing my eyes, I saw this as my chance to channel my Pegasi magic into my right fore hoof. Just as I stated, I didn't use my wings, but as the Earth pony got to his hooves, his back was turned to me. I jumped up onto his back, my hoof swirling with a blue aura as I hit down into his head, dispelling the spell. The Earth pony let out a hefty grunt as his drunken body collapsed into the haystack.
Using my wings, I levitated off of the stallion and landed a few yards away. Hooves being slapped together, a sound of approval reached my ears. I turned to expect it was Cylinder or Altamira, but they were simply sitting there, gazing between me and somepony else. Clearly they had a look of fear as if I was in deep trouble. I almost dared not to even look, but my curiosity got the better of me and my eyes darted over. There stood head of the Royal Guard, Shining Armor.

Can't say it was my proudest moment getting caught in a bar fight by the head of the Guard himself, but I'm glad it happened. To be honest, if Cylinder hadn't dragged me to that bar that day, I would most likely still be in cadet training, and it would have been possibly years before actually making the official Royal Guard. Myself as well as most likely the entire Royal Guard has seen Shining Armor's authority, and how serious he can be. He can be strong, endearing, but sometimes he can be downright menacing. However, when you get to know him... he is kind, and understanding. Honestly, come to think of it, when he truly cares, he can be a total softy.
Anyway, after being caught, that was when I started seeing the signs....
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\Past/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
For the longest time we just walked alongside one another. I was sure he was taking me to Celestia herself, or maybe even my father. However, the direction that we were heading in, said it was the former. We were headed straight for the castle, but as soon as we got their, we took a right toward the Canterlot gardens. I flinched when the rather impressive looking Shining finally broke the silence, “I've heard about you, and your family, but I was positive the Legacy family would end with your father.”
“E-excuse me?” I pause, realizing what he meant after I had spoken my first thought.
He only chuckled, which only slightly defused the tension. I was unsure if he was laughing at my clear clueless expression, or the fact that I had taken down a Royal Guard and he was simply impressed, “Your family has served the crown since the banishment of Nightmaremoon. Honestly, I thought for awhile that maybe your families power had something to do with her. Since after Nightmaremoon returned to Luna, the Legacy family just seemed to end. I'm happy to see that you follow in their hoofsteps.”
Normally I wasn't one to be rude, but at the moment my heart was racing a mile a minute. I stopped, which made Shining pause and look my way. I hesitantly glanced up to him, most likely showing the fear on my muzzle, “Sir, am I in trouble?”
This was what confused me; his face suddenly softened into a contented half grin. I froze as he turned and slowly stepped toward me, sitting down right in front of me. I sat down as well, and with us both sitting, he was at least five or so inches taller than me. I couldn't have been much younger than him, but he almost towered over me. Our eyes met before he chuckled, “On the contrary.”
I expected him to continue, but he simply got up and motioned me to follow. Sprinting to catch up, I joined him by his side as we stepped through the garden. He kept his gaze forward as he slowly spoke, “As you probably know, A threat has been issued against Canterlot. Also, my marriage to Cadence is nearing. With just about all my strength going toward keeping the shield up around Canterlot, I am vulnerable if alone. You have your families skill, and you could protect me.”
Pausing once more, I stopped in front of a pony statue that looked an awful lot like Starswirl the Bearded. I must have gave Shining Armor an 'you must be kidding' glare, because he looked back to me with worry on his face. He seemed to predict my next question as he took the liberty to answer before I could ask, “Your father is in no place for a full frontal attack. Just as the Earth pony you just fought against; Randelhoof. Your father fought against Nightmaremoon and took extensive damage. He can barely fly anymore, and can only train new recruits. The crown has trusted your family for a thousand years, and with seeing you fight with my own eyes, I must say I share in that trust.”
“T-thank you sir!” I stutter in disbelief, “But... there has to be ponies that are far more well trained than I am. I'm just a cadet, should you really trust in somepony that hasn't gone through the full training of the Royal Guard?”
This was where he just simply smiled at me, once more sitting in front of me, “I happen to hear that you've taken the entire course at least three times, thanks to your father, am I correct?”
My ears fold back, and I frown, “Well, technically... my dad repeatedly put me through it to try and bulk me up, but my body just stays frail. I've always passed the advanced classes, but due to my stature I was put in the Royal Guard patrol cadet section.”
“Size isn't everything.” Shining smiled, before glancing over to a statue, “Look, this here was one of our greatest Guards; Valor. He was one of your ancestors come to think about it.”
Glancing over to the statue, I notice that he too was a Pegasi. I thought for sure every pony in my family line would have some sort of weapon by his side, but Valor simply had a book. I kept my eyes glued to the pony as I felt a hoof on my shoulder, “Valor was just as small as you, and he managed just fine. He aided Princess Celestia when Luna turned into Nightmaremoon. He happened to die in that prized fight, but without him, Celestia wouldn't have made it to the Elements of Harmony.”
“Why haven't I heard about this?” I look to him in disbelief, raising an eyebrow as if he was lying.
“Ponies want to believe that the Princess can save them from anything, even from another Princess. Even against Celestia's direct order, the historians wrote Valor out of the books. Celestia wished they hadn't, it shows a valuable lesson that the Princesses wont live forever, and that we have to one day fight to keep what we hold dear.”
Listening to his words, all of it spoke to me, but for some reason, anger was boiling inside me. He was basing my skills on my family legacy, not by my own merit. I snap my gaze over to him, “Yes, that may be true, but I'm not my family! I am my own pony and I've trained hard to be as good as I am. You can't just trust me because my entire family is trust worthy!”
“So are you saying you are untrustworthy?” for some reason Shining had a knowing sly smirk on his muzzle.
My expression softened, and I took a step back, “N-no, but... trust has to be earned... it shouldn't just be given...”
It was Shining's turn to look shocked. He gazed to me in bafflement, but that didn't last long as he suddenly smiled, “Okay then! Let's earn some trust!”
Suddenly without warning, I'm being pulled by my forehoof with a light blue aura. My hind hooves dragged across the ground, before he let go and glanced back to me with a chuckle, “Don't make me give you a direct order, soldier.”
“Y-yes sir...” I manage to say, frowning as I follow, 'I don't have a good feeling about this...'
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
At first I hesitated before entering the castle, but Shining just gave me a glance and motioned me forward. For awhile I wasn't sure where we were headed, but we seemed to be headed straight to the main dining hall where the Princesses ate their meals. Glancing up these two large brown doors, I stopped in my tracks and looked to Shining, “Am I even allowed in there?”
That earned a chuckle from him, but he just calmly smiled as he placed a hoof on the door, “You're my guest for the evening, and I'm marrying a Princess. It'll be alright, I promise!”
Letting out a small sigh, I just nodded to him. My heart racing and hoping the three princesses wouldn't be there. As the doors opened, aided by two guard ponies at either side of the door, we were met by a slightly bright light due to the setting sun glistening through the windows. Unlike most of the castle, this particular room had regular windows. I suppose the princesses liked to see outside with their meals. My heart skipped a beat as I hear none other than Celestia herself, “Afternoon, Shining Armor! It is wonderful you could finish with your duties in time to join us.”
A chill ran down my back, and despite the comfortable cool of the room, sweat formed on my brow as Celestia's eyes fixated on me. I could tell she probably knew exactly who I was due to my family status, but that didn't stop her from asking, “And who is this, a friend of yours?”
Glancing over to Shining, he had a nervous grin on his face. I suppose he still wasn't used to addressing the Princess so formally, especially due to his status as the head of the Royal Guard, “Yeah, you could say that. He is the son of Drill Sergeant, from the Legacy family.”
Celestia knowingly nodded as she glanced from Shining back to me. She calmly smiled, as if she approved of me being there with them, “It is a pleasure, young Prophet.”
“Hehe...” I grin nervously, immediately noticing that we had yet to tell her my name. She apparently knew who I was all along, but I let it slip by. I hurriedly bowed in respect, hoping not to offend, “Likewise, Princess.”
Motioning for a nearby mare in a black apron that was loosely tied around her midsection, Celestia softly nodded to her, “Please set another spot for our guest.”
“Yes your highness!” The mare confirmed before rushing to the kitchen, most likely for another plate and silverware.
“This way.” Shining whispered to me.
I instantly obeyed, following the white stallion. I was about to sit down two seats away from Cadence, but was soon guided over to the next. I glanced over to Shining curiously, but it suddenly hit me, 'The factions... he's prepping me like a faction leader would. He wants me to get closer to Cadence to build trust, isn't he?'
Deciding not to be rude, I just nervously nod and take my seat. My eyes slowly glance over to Cadence, but quickly dart my eyes away, only getting a glimpse of her. Then my curiosity took over and I hesitantly stole another look. The pink princess currently had her face in her hoof, and her elbow on the table. I couldn't help but think, 'I-is she bored? You would think she'd be happier her fiance was here...'
I barely even noticed the mare from earlier return with that plate and a set of silverware wrapped in a napkin. The mare hastily set the spot in front of Shining since I was currently sitting in his usual spot. Then I quickly gazed over as Shining broke the brief silence, “So hun, I was thinking that Prophet could be our private guard, what do you think about that?”
This seemed to snap Cadence out of her boredom, and her brows turned down in frustration, “And what makes you think we need a guard? I'm an Alicorn princess and you are the head of the Royal Guard. Not to mention, what makes him so special? He doesn't seem all that powerful, just look at his size!”
For a moment I felt a pit fall to my stomach, letting my eyes fall to the empty plate on the table before me. Shining's face turned to shock, astonished that his lovely mare had suddenly snapped. Looking up, I saw Cadence's eyes shift from her fiance, over to the other princesses, and her expression softened and a rosy blush filled her cheeks, “Sorry, I just... don't want to trust somepony that doesn't have a history. Drill Sergeant was said to be the last of the Legacy family, wasn't he?”
A laugh filled the air and Shining threw his hooves up, “Oh I know, but you should have seen Prophet, just now! I was on my way to the Royal Guard bar, like I usually do to check on the stallions, and there I find Prophet taking on Randelhoof, single hoofed!”
“Impressive!” Celestia stated, the slight shock and impressed expression apparent, “Randelhoof is a mighty opponent. Surely held his own against, Nightmaremo--” Celestia blankly blinked, her gaze darting over to her sister. Luna hadn't seemed to notice, but Celestia's cheeks turned slightly red before clearing her throat, fumbling to change the subject, “H-how did you ever manage to beat him, Prophet?”
For the moment I wanted nothing more than to melt into my chair, and disappear from sight. My heart rate felt shallow, and I seemed to hover over my own body, “I uh... To be fair, I knew he took cranial damage in the fight with Nightmaremoon. There was a spell that was placed to help it heal, and it remained to prevent future problems. I merely dispelled it to make his body think it was bashed in once more. It really wasn't anything, and to be honest, if I was up against a true opponent, and a sober one, it may have been another story.”
When I was met with silence, I managed to look up between everypony to notice the shock on their faces. Luna was the first to collect herself, and her face shown clear confusion as she asked, “But you are a Pegasi, how is it you could dispel a unicorn spell?”
Lowering my nose, I kept my eyes on Luna. To be honest, I had yet to tell anypony about my training with Zacora, and it was no wonder why even Celestia had not heard. Zebras came from a far away land, and used elements from the land to do the jobs unicorns and pegasi normally done. All I had done, was learn their ways, “I uh... you see... all ponies have magic, it is just because the Unicorns horn that they can focus it into a malleable form. A mare named Zacora showed me how to focus my Pegasi magic, not through pushing clouds around, but through my hooves.”
“Zacora?” Celestia murmered, tapping her forehoof to her mouth, trying to recollect where she had heard that name.
“Remember dear sister? Zacora is a zebra that lives in the Everfree forest. She is friends with Twilight and the other Elements of Harmony.” Luna grinned, feeling a small bit of accomplishment at her knowledge, that apparently slipped her sisters mind.
“Hmm...” Celestia nodded, the information being confirmed in her own mind, “But how do you know of Zecora, lulu?”
Luna's nose pointed downward for a moment, and I could swear there was a faint reddened hue on the princesses cheeks. It was wondrous to see one of my dear goddesses in such an adorably vulnerable state. Luna glanced back to her sister, but was hesitant to keep eye contact, “When I visited Ponyville on nightmare night, Zacora was telling the little ones of the tale of Nightmaremoon.”
“Yeah, I saw how you turned the toy spiders into real ones. For a moment I thought I would have to face you to stop the spiders, but after a moment it was apparent that you were only desperate for ponies to like you.” The room became silent, and my mind blanked at my open admittance.
The red on Luna's cheeks intensified as her nose pointed down to her plate, but her eyes remained on me, “You... you saw that, huh?”
It was my turn to blush, but I managed to nod as an answer, “It's okay though, everypony liked you in the end, didn't they?”
“Y-yes... yes they did...” Luna let her gaze drop to her plate once more, but this time a small contented grin adorned her face, “Thanks to Twilight Sparkle.”
Suddenly I heard a sigh to my right, and as I glance over, Cadence grunted, “Where are the cooks with our food?! They seem to be taking longer than usual!”
Just as she spoke, the doors swung open and out came several ponies dressed in white with platters of food. Most of the ponies were unicorns and many of the platters hoovered in the air. My mouth began to drool as the delectables filled the air with their warm aroma. It was foods from possibly every corner of creation, all the way from fish from the griffons, to the very own home grown apple recipes from Sweet Apple Acres. By the time all the food was placed, Cadence didn't waste any time chowing down, her face riddled with filth of her food. To me, it just seemed a little discerning for a Princess to lack in the manner department.
Then I feel a slight nudge in my side, followed by Shining whispering in my ear, “Don't mind her, she's probably just starved from planning the wedding all day.”
I nodded, keeping my mouth closed to be polite, but I couldn't help to glance once more back to Cadence to think, 'something seems off with her...'
For what the rest didn't know, I could see auras, and with me being... well... me, I knew all three of the Princesses auras. This Cadence's aura was dark, cold, and black. I decided to let it slid for the moment as a spoonful of potatoes were splashed onto my plate, aided by Shining's magic.
“Thank you...” I muttered, but kept a close watch on Cadence through the corner of my eye.

Chapter Three: Tailing the Princesses

Thanks to Zecora's training, and my special gift telling me where to be, I just knew I had to investigate. A ponies aura stays the same their entire lives, or so I'm told. The only exception is that it slightly changes with the experiences throughout our lives, unless we have a life altering event. Cadence was either not who she claimed to be, or something happened to cripple the very pony she had been. Either way, I felt the need to investigate and at the very least, check on the princess.
After dinner, I tailed my superior's wife, not to mention my new faction leader; Shining Armor...

“So, where are you headed? I assume you have been assigned your room?” Shining raised his brow, waiting patiently for my reply.
Nodding, I hesitantly chuckle, “I'm with the other patrol cadets in the commoners motel.”
“For the night you can return there, but from tomorrow forth, you will be assigned a new room. Report to me at high noon, tomorrow for your orders, as well as your first day; understood?” Suddenly Shining took an air of authority, just as he normally had with any of his troops. I knew since I had accepted the job, this was most likely a direct order, “Also, you will no longer be training with your troop.”
“Sir, yes sir!” I called out, standing at attention.
A small chuckle escaped the unicorn. He turned away from me before smiling, “At ease soldier! oh and good night!”
Several moments passed and I just merely watched my new boss vanish in the distance, on his way somewhere around the castle. Made me wonder where he was staying since he wasn't married yet. Once he was gone, that was when I saw a flash of pink fly from a high above balcony.
“Princess Cadenza?” I question myself in slight disbelief, but after recollecting myself, I took to the air after her. Surely this was my chance to tail her and hopefully uncover what was up with her.
After a moment, I notice her turn tail and head where Shining Armor had. Soon enough, we landed at a house that out-skirted the castle. Only the living room was lit, and the chimney was eagerly puffing smoke from the top. Once Cadence landed, she didn't even bother knocking as she pushed her way inside. For a brief moment I could hear Shining Armor, “Hey, hun! Here, help me out of my--”
I didn't hear any more as the door shut with a click. I was about to land and glance into the window, but was halted as I heard hoofsteps. I darted into a bush, and steadied my breath, trying to gently gaze through the leaves. At first I couldn't see a thing, but as the figure stepped into the light of the torchlight, my eyes widened, “Lady Sparkle?!”
Twilight Sparkle was indeed known around the castle of being Celestia's pupil. I had met her quite a hoof full on different occasions. Never actually held a full conversation with the mare, but it was enough to know her personality and that she was a book worm. From rumor I had heard that she had really opened up since leaving for Ponyville, but that was another story.
“Why are you here, Lady Sparkle?” I whispered to myself, muttering low enough that not even I could hear.
It wasn't long before Twilight was inside and I made my way to the window. Shining Armor was getting dressed for his wedding, most likely to try it on to make sure it still fit. Then Shining acknowledged his sister, “Twily! Your big brother's looking pretty good, don't you think?” As he looked to his sister, he instantly grew concerned of his sisters forlorn expression, “huh. Everything okay?”
Struggling to listen, I took a step closer, barely able to hear everything being said. Twilight's face softened as she looked to her dear brother, “We need to talk. I think you're making a big--”
I flinch and duck under the windowsill as Cadence made her way into the room. I could hear her clear her throat before Shining spoke up, “Oh, uh, hi, sweetie.”
“She sure has a way of sneaking up on people.” Twilight stated, most likely to herself, but since she was standing near the window I was at, I managed to hear it. Seemed like she was sarcastic, and didn't seemed to share in her brother's love for the pink princess.
“Could I speak to you for a moment, dear?” Cadence stated in an apparently irritated voice.
However, Shining just merely smiled as he whispered to Twilight, “Better see what she wants.”
As Shining and Cadence made their way into a nearby room, Twilight glanced into the cracked door of the room they were in. I couldn't see much, but then I heard Twilight mutter to herself, “She isn't just unpleasant and rude. She's downright evil!”
Twilight darted from the door, and I could hear Shining call after her, “Twilight!”
“Let her go.” Cadence sighed as she ran her nose under her soon to be husband.
“Huh...” Shining couldn't help but gaze after his sister, “It seemed like she had something else she wanted to tell me.”
Watching Twilight dash off to the castle, I made a decision to follow her. Making my way through the darkness, I noticed her run up the steps. Making my landing from the air, I was about to make my way up the steps, that was until I heard a voice, followed by a dark figure blocking my path, “Prophet, why, may I ask, are you following Twilight Sparkle this late at night?”
“L-luna!” I stuttered, skidding to a halt. I shuffled my gaze between her and where Twilight had disappeared too. I definitely didn't want her to think I was a stalker, but I suppose, technically I was at the moment.
“Yes, it is I, Luna.” The dark Princess frowned as she made her way closer to me, “Prithee, tell me why you follow my sisters pupil?”
I could have lied to the princess, told her Twilight just seemed upset and I was checking on her. As I gazed into Luna's luminous cyan eyes, I just couldn't lie to her. Somehow despite her irregular aura, and knowing something was off, I couldn't manage to say anything else, “Well... it's kind of a long story...”
Luna just merely raised her brow, sitting down, “As you see, the sun is set. I have all night before morning.”
Sitting down myself, I began to explain everything. My abilities of aura, my training, how Cadence wasn't herself, and even my spying. The entire time, Luna didn't do much more than the occasional nod or question, but once I was finished, silence befell the both of us. Only after several moments of leaving Luna to her thoughts, I thought it best to speak up, “Luna? Do you even believe me?”
I couldn't see much of Luna, but her eyes were clearly visible, as if I were looking at two moons up in the sky. Especially since the view was accentuated by her mane, making it look as if I were gazing at the night sky. She blinked, hiding her eyes for a brief moment, before nodding, “Yes, Prophet. If you were lying, that would be some outrageous and extensive lie. I would be a fool, if I at least didn't check this out.”
A smile hastily formed, despite my best effort to fight it. Even if I knew something was up with her, I decided to play along to prevent an altercation, “So, what are we going to do?”
“We are not going to do anything.”
“W-what?” I blink at her, my eyes probably going wide and giving away my shock.
“I'm going to confront Cadence, and I will get to the bottom of this. You go to your room, and go along with business as usual. I will inform you to calm any doubts you may have.”
Frowning, I couldn't help plead to her, “But, Princess! If whatever gotten to Cadence is strong enough to replicate an alicorn, wouldn't it be dangerous for you?”
“Do not fret, Prophet. Just go and get some rest, or do I need to make that a direct order?” Luna raised her brow, just daring me to disobey.
My ears splayed back against my head, and I could feel the tug downward on either end of my mouth. I weakly shook my head and replied, “No your highness...”
“Good, now get going, and goodnight.” Luna smiled, followed by a short giggle.
Turning to take my leave, I glanced back to notice Luna still smiling at me. Finally letting out a sigh, I do as I was told and walk back toward Canterlot, and where the new cadets were being housed. However, as soon as I was out of eyesight, I darted over into a bush. I could hear the flapping of wings, followed by a shadow thanks to the moon signify that Luna was headed for Cadence's home.
“Well, technically even if she made it a direct order, she isn't my goddess, now is she?” I mutter to myself as I rounded the corner and straight up the stairs into the castle.

Luna landed in front of the home that Cadence and Shining Armor had been staying in. Luna smirked as she looked over her shoulder, “I suppose Shining was right, and here I thought the Legacy family would be out of the way...” Luna's smile faded and she frowned, letting out a soft sigh, “At least I can keep him out of the way until I'm finished.”
The dark princess was about to head inside, but she quickly giggled to herself, “Oh, silly me! I almost forgot!” Closing her eyes, green circled her body as her body quickly started to change. Purple hastily transformed to pink, and soon she was Cadence once more, “hmm... either form is... distasteful, but it'll have to do until I overtake Canterlot.”
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Rounding up the halls, I was basically letting my instincts tell me where to go. I hated letting myself go blindly, but it was all I had to go on. I knew from my studies that this particular tower was where guests would house at, but it didn't mean Twilight had gone this way. Just as I reached the first room, the door opened and Twilight stepped through it, muttering, “Looks like I really am on my own.”
Behind her I could hear other mares, which I figured were most likely the other Elements of Harmony. Twilight paused in the hallway, closing the door behind her. She turned her attention to me, which she seemed stressed and a little bit fed up, “Prophet? You're not part of the Royal Guard, at least not yet. Why are you here?”
Deciding to go for broke, my instincts tell me just to come right out with it, “I believe you.”
For a moment, she didn't seem to catch on, but being as witty as she was, it quickly dawned on her, “You know about Cadence?”
“Yes, long story short, I know she isn't whom she says she is. Her aura just isn't right...” I didn't bother hiding my training from her. I didn't know if she believed me, or even trusted me, but it looked as if she was just relieved to find somepony that believed her.
She seemed almost like she was going to cry in relief as she laughed halfheartedly, “Thank Celestia! I've heard of Aura's from Zecora, was that what you were doing with her all that time in Ponyville?”
Nodding to her, I quickly reply, “Yeah, but we can talk about that later. Normally auras don't change unless you go through a life altering event. I know marriage is a huge step, but I highly doubt that is it. Her aura seems like she has turned...” I fall silent, unsure of the right word to use.
“Evil?” Twilight added.
I softly nodded, “Seems a good a word as any. Come to think about it... Luna seemed a little off earlier too... I think whatever got to her, got to Luna.”
“Do you think there are two of them?” Twilight asked with worry in her voice, her brow raised and I could tell she was panicking, “what if they got to Celestia too?!”
“N-no...” I stutter, the thought crossing my mind as well, “Luna's aura seemed to be the same as Cadence's. It may be the same creature. I have the power to dispel magic, thanks to Zecora. I'm going to tail Cadence tonight and try to dispel Shining. If I fail, you need to try and stop Cadence.”
Twilight nodded, her face turning serious, “Just be careful!”
Giving my confirmation, I turned away from her and headed from the castle. On my way out, I glanced up to make sure Luna was nowhere to be seen. Sure enough, stood Luna, but this one seemed to be the real Luna. Her aura was back to normal. Deciding to play it cool, I made my way down the stairs and luckily the princess didn't give me any mind, instantly recognizing me. I let out a sigh of relief and take off to a full gallop toward Shining's home.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
At the home, I stepped up to the windowsill and glanced in. Shining stood there with his eyes swirling green, while Cadence merely circled around him. For the moment I just listened, hoping to gain information from the devil before taking her on. Maybe I could even approach Shining and dispel whatever spell was keeping him in a zombie like state, “He must stay like this so she can re-insure that she is Cadence. A true lover would know if something was up. It must be part of the spell...”
“My dear future husband, who do you love?” The supposed Cadence whispered, nudging the white stallions cheek.
“You, my love...” Shining stated in a robotic voice, never actually looking at her. His eyes swirled green, but his pupils remained pointed slightly toward the ceiling.
“Who are you in love with? Say her name?” Cadence questioned, running her hoof oh so gently up his neck.
“You, you are my love, Cadence.” Shining finally took a glance at the pink Alicorn, but soon his gaze wandered to nothing in particular.
“Good, now stay here while I get your supplement.” The pink mare snickered as she left the room.
This was my chance. Heading in through the front door, I opened it gently to make sure it remained silent. Once inside, I could hear Cadence in the kitchen and headed to the bedroom to Shining. The white stallion simply remained put, while his gaze wandered in the distance, “Shining! Hey... snap out of it!”
Starting to focus my aura, my hooves start to swirl and decide the best point to dispel him would be between his eyes. I barely tap his head, until I flinch when I hear something drop in the next room. I freeze solid, but then Cadence seemed to resume what ever she had been doing. When I glanced back to Shining, I jumped as I noticed the stallion locking eyes with me. My heart beat erratically as I asked him worriedly, “Shining, are you okay?”
The stallions brows turned down in anger, and he opened his mouth wide, “CADENCE! Intruder, arm yourself my beloved!”
Lurching forward, I used my hooves to snap his mouth closed, but it was too late. The door swung open and there stood a rather angry looking Alicorn princess. What surprised me was when her expression suddenly softened, and then she laughed. I could only watch as she locked the door and then circled around me, “I underestimated you... You saw right through my ruse as Luna, am I correct?”
Nodding my head gently, I looked to her, waiting for her to make her move. When that didn't happen, she continued, “Do you happen to know of the crystal catacombs beneath the castle?”
Shaking my head no, I evaluated my chance for escape, but without the information of exactly what she was, I had no idea for my chances, “What are you?!”
“Nothing that concerns you, you little offspring...” Cadence's nose scrunched up with a slightly fowl taste on her tongue. Letting out a sigh, she shook her head, “You spoke with Twilight, didn't you?”
I shook my head once more, desperately not wanted her to know Twilight was in on this, and possibly endangering her.
“Oh don't lie, pet! I am the queen of disguise and lies, you cannot possibly hide from me!” Cadence smiled proudly, a wicked grin on her muzzle. Once her face softened, she frowned, “Now... I expect that once you go missing, Twilight will most likely try to stop the rehearsal tomorrow. I'll just simply make her look like a fool, and have Shiny here, play mister disappointed and when everypony turns against her, I'll strike!”
“I wont let you!” I snarl, stepping away from Shining and flaring my wings out against the pink Princess.
“It's already too late, my little pest!” Cadence grinned sinisterly, and I could see the fire burning in her eyes, the evil.
My attention was soon tugged downward as something engulfed my hooves. I was sinking into the floor, and what seemed to be a black swirling mass of goop. Flapping my wings, I barely gain an inch, only to be slammed against the floor and half my body being engulfed. Glancing over, Shining and I locked eyes, that was until I was overcome by darkness.
