Chapters Dr. Gambler and the Spear of Life
I knew only one person who could help me on this, her name was Pastel Cloudancer.
She was my partner with a taste of adventure herself, she is also an actress and I just finished watching one of her shows.
"Pastel, somepony is here to see you," Pastel's assistant tells her.
"Who is it?" Pastel asked.
"I think he said he was a doctor," The assistant answered.
"Hello Pastel," I said as I walked into the room with flourish and a confident gait.
"Gambler, I knew one day you'd be walking through my door once again.
"Pastel, how would you like one last adventure?" I proposed, walking over to her.
"Now Gambler, you know I don't do that anymore," Pastel said walking over to a mirror to fix her mane.
"Pastel this is about the spear," I told her, my tone getting more and more serious.
She stopped at the mention of the spear, "Gambler, the spear isn't real." she said.
"Look I know that we've been searching for years and haven't come up with anything but Wildcard seems to have information on it and I think we might have a lead on the real thing here," I explained to her.
"Fine I'll go along, but this better turn up something," She agreed.
"Alri- GET DOWN!" I yelled after seeing a pony outside pull out a gun through the mirror.
We both got behind the couch, hearing the muffled thumps of the bullets hitting our cover. I pulled out my own gun, peeked up over the couch, took my aim, and fired two shots. The bullets I fired flew past the pony and shattered the windows behind him. As the pony covered himself from the falling glass shards we ran past him and over to my car.
"Pastel, take the wheel, head for the bay, I've got a plane waiting for us there," I tell her.
We head down main-street, bullets flying past the windows, "Wow, these guys have horrible aim." Almost as soon as I said that a bullet shot in through the back window of the car and out through the windshield.
"Pastel! Take a right ... NOW!" I yelled above the gunshots.
She took a sharp right; the car behind us rammed into the streetlight. "Who was that Gambler? Pastel asked me.
"I don't know," I answered. After a few more minutes of driving we made it to the plane and as I was getting on my phone rang. "Who is it?" I asked answering the phone.
"It's me," Wildcard answered, "We think there might be a lead for you guys in Paris. Call me when you get there," He hung up.
"Pastel, looks like we're goin' to Paris," I announced.
"Oui oui," She said.
Dr. Gambler and the Spear of Life
When we landed in Paris I pulled out my phone so I could call Wildcard, "Alright, We've landed in Paris, what now?" I ask.
"A friend of mine will meet you there and give you all the information we have at the moment. You know Skyheart right?" He said.
"Yeah, I know her," I said, "Anyway so is that all?"
"Yes," Wildcard said as he hung-up.
As I was putting away my phone a purple-maned, blue pegasus walked up, it was Skyheart. "Gambler, it is so good to see you again." She then turned to Pastel, "Who are you?"
"Pastel, meet Skyheart. Skyheart, meet Pastel," After the introduction I looked over to Skyheart, "Wildcard said you have some information for us."
"Oh, yeah, here," she said, pulling a book out of her bag, "This book has all the information you're gonna need to decipher the map, you have to find the map first though."
"Wait there's a map?" Pastel asked incredulously.
"Yep," Skyheart answered, "Gambler, our information has confirmed that the map is here in Paris, but, we don't know exactly where."
I started to pace around, "Hm, where should we start?"
"How about the museum?" Skyheart suggests.
When we get to the museum we scope out the area to search for possible clues, "Look at those statues, their spears are all pointing to the right except for that one," Pastel pointed out. We followed the directions of the statue's spears until we got to the last one which had a spear pointing directly up to the sun, which was visible due to the skylight, and it's hoof was pointing forward. "We need to come back after closing," I said
"Why?" Pastel asked.
"Because I think I've found the map," Ii told them.
Dr. Gambler and the Spear of Life
The moon's midnight glow washed over Paris. As it turns out Skyheart can pick locks, that's how we're in the museum. We walked over to the statue that we saw earlier and looked to where the hoof was pointing; it was pointing over to a display. The display was of a pony with it's heart being ripped from it's chest and held up to the ceiling. I searched the display, looking to see if I could find anything useful.
After a few minutes of searching I noticed that one part of the ground of the display sounded hollow. I knocked on the ground with my hoof and found that it did sound hollow. I readied the hammer that I had brought along with me and slammed it down on the ground, breaking up the foam, stone ground and the floorboards underneath it. Under the floor there was a small, old chest.
I noticed the shadows of two ponies behind me, I then whirled around, gun out. It was just Pastel and Skyheart, Oh, you two know not to surprise me, I could have shot one of you," I warned them. I turned away from them and opened the chest, there was a map inside. "It's a map of Cuba," I announced to them.
"Off to Cuba then," Pastel said.
Dr. Gambler and the Spear of Life
When we landed in Cuba we followed the map we found to a cave. "Guys, I think we've found it," I said.
"Good, now hoofs in the air," I turned my head to see who had said that. I can't believe it, I thought to myself. It was Wildcard, pointing a gun at us.
"Wildcard?! What is this? How did you find us?" I asked incredulously.
"I had a friend on the inside, I guess you could say," Wildcard said as Skyheart strolled over to him.
"Don't get me wrong Gambler, I am sorry about this, but, it's my job I had to do this," She said, walking behind Gambler.
"Why do you want the spear Wildcard?" I asked him.
"It's simple really, I mean honestly, think about it, Do you know how much money people will pay for me to bring their dead loved ones back to life?" Wildcard said, "I'll be rich!"
"You know that I won't be getting it for you Wildcard," I told him.
"Oh yes you will," He said. He then shot Pastel.
"NO!" I yelled watching Pastel fall to the ground, blood running from the wound in her chest and pooling around her.
Dr. Gambler and the Spear of Life
I held Pastel in my arms as Wildcard said, "Now you're going to have to get the spear for me if you want to save your friend." I then took off my scarf and wrapped it tight around Pastel's chest to stop the bleeding.
"Wildcard?! You told me that no one had to die!" Skyheart yelled as she ran over to us.
"Well then I guess we have something in common then," Wildcard said smugly, keeping the gun pointed at us.
"Oh yeah? What is that then?" Skyheart asked.
"We both lie," Wildcard said.
I started to run towards Wildcard. "One more step and I shoot her in the head," Wildcard said. I stopped running when I heard that.
"The only way to save her is to get the spear back before it's too late to help her, Ii'll help her until then," Skyheart told me.
"Alright, thank you Skyheart." I told her. I then ran into the dark cave.
Dr. Gambler and the Spear of Life
My name is Gambler, Dr. Gambler. I may be a teacher, but I have danced with danger, raced death, and have certainly had my fair share of adventures. But, my story begins two years ago, in the heat of the summer.
The phone rang, sounding out clear in the dead silence of my study. "Hello," I said, picking up the phone.
"We have a mission for you," The gruff voice belonged to none other than Wildcard from PIS (Pony Investigation Services). Why is he calling me? I thought to myself.
"Hey Wildcard. So, what am I looking for? A coin? A pot? How 'bout a Gold Tooth; those are always fun to talk about at lunch." I joked.
"How do you feel about a spear?" He answered.
This sobered me immediately. "Don't joke about that," I deadpanned.
"I assure you, I am not joking. You will be looking for the Spear of Life." He told me in a serious tone that intimidated me.
"I-I gotta go," I said shakily, hanging up the phone. "I can't believe it, I thought it was just a myth. Well, if it is real then I can't pass this up. But I'm gonna need some help." I grabbed my pistol, hat, and scarf. I reached back over to my phone and punched in a number, "James?"
"Hey Gambler, what do you need?" He answered.
"A plane to Manehatten," I told him.
"Okay. That will be about 50 bits," He replied.
"Alright, when is it?" I said.
"The earliest flight is 15 minutes, so, I would hurry up if I were you," He answered.
"Thanks James," I then hung up and headed out to the airport.
