Do you know what magic is?
Do you really? Or do you believe that magic isn't real? That it is merely fiction, the product of imaginations gone wild? Well I can assure you it is real. Not here, perhaps, on this earth, but in a universe as impossibly big as ours, everything is real. Even Magic. In some far flung corner of the universe a few hundred million stars positively burn with it. And on those worlds around those stars life has found its way. The magic flows through these creatures big and small as they struggle to survive. Here the fantasies come to life. Here roam the griffons, the minotaurs, the phoenixes. Here there be dragons, sea beasts, and monsters too horrifying to imagine. Through magic, this divine force, this holy energy, these myths have found life. But the legends are not the only ones to draw strength from the mysteries of magic. Animals and plants not too unknown to mankind also gain power from the mystical energies, becoming much more than they could ever be on our home. It flows through and changes all living things.
But magic cannot change all, and thus the struggle for survival rages on. Even on worlds where the mystic forces are strongest, creatures must fight for the right to live, and, through that, natural selection comes into being. These creatures become stronger, faster, and, most importantly, smarter. Just as on our world, on these magical planets, one creature rose to take the mantel of dominant species. But on one of these worlds it wasn't the dragons who became supreme, or the griffons, or the minotaurs. Nor was it the sea beasts, or the windigos, or the changelings. Rather, most unexpected of all, it was in fact a species of small equines that won the race to sapience. These magically endowed ponies, coming in every color known to man, emerged victorious against all odds, and began the slow crawl toward civilization.
It was probably helpful that these ponies were quite diverse. Aside from being rainbow coated, the ponies were divided into three, interbreeding races: the swift pegasi, winged horses of the winds; the hardy earth ponies, laborers of the land; and, last but not least, the wise unicorns, masters of magic. With such distinct attributes unified, nothing was impossible for these impossible little ponies. Unfortunately, like all races that learned to think, the ponies learned to fight, not with outside threats, but with each other. Nations rose and fell, wars raged and ended, ponies died cold and alone, and for centuries, despite the magic that flowed through their veins, the ponies squabbled among themselves. Over time, other races began to catch up in evolution while the ponies remained stagnant. Greed and lust drove their leaders, just as it does ours, and all but a few ignored the dangers that such carelessness brings, especially with magic in the mix.
This is a story about consequences.
This is a story about monsters and about nature.
This is the story of what happens when you ask yourself "Could we?" instead of "Should we?"
