It wouldn't be far off the mark to say that Equestria is always in trouble. Seemingly every other week, some 'supervillain' rises up with one of the following three plans.

1) Destroy everypony.
2) Enslave everypony.
3) Conquer Equestria.

Occasionally, they try to enact some sweeping market deal that gets everypony to buy products relentlessly, nearly crippling the economy. Rainbow Dash's mistake was thankfully righted quickly.

Though, sadly, it seems the Elements of Harmony are facing one of 'those' villains again. Sonork, the King of Darkness (how creative) has appeared to take over Ponyville, and it's up to Twilight Sparkle and the Elements of Harmony to put a stop to his oh so evil deeds. Though something seems strange. Very strange.
