Love and Pain
The Awful Truth
Load Full StoryNext ChapterPinkie's world shrank around her. The news the vet had just given her was truly devastating.
"W-what?" Pinkie stammered.
"I'm sorry, Pinkie, but Gummy must be put down." The vet explained. "He's been living in pain for the past month." He said.
A tear escaped her eye. Or two. Or three. Or more.
She looked at her pet that she had since she moved to Ponyville.
He was going to be gone, forever.
She sniffled as more tears ran down her face.
"I-I can't believe this..." Pinkie sputtered. "He looked just fine to me..."
"Pinkie, his face expression never changes." The vet said flatly. "I'll reschedule a date to put him to sleep." He said. "How does this Wednesday work?" He asked.
"Fine......" Pinkie mumbled.
She only had three days left with her beloved pet. Three short days, were what Gummy had left to live for.
She picked Gummy up off the table and hugged him.
"I'm so sorry, Gummy..." Pinkie choked back a sob. "You're so young..."
She looked back up at the vet.
"I have to go now." She said. "Thank you." She mumbled the last part, unsure if she really was thankful.
He was taking her pet away from her, but than again, the alligator was in extreme pain, so it was for the best.
She held back her tears until she got to her room, and then, she let it all out.
Her mane grew slightly before it made a deflated noise, and pink strands of mane draped over her body.
"Why you, Gummy?" She asked. "It won't be the same without you..." Pinkie mumbled.
"Pinkie?" A voice came from downstairs.
Dashie! Pinkie thought. She couldn't let her friends see her like this, but it was too late.
"Pinkie, are you here?" Rainbow called.
Pinkie's bedroom door slowly swung open and Rainbow's head popped in.
"Hi Pinks, I was wonder-" She froze at the state of her pink friend. "Pinkie, what's wrong?" She asked as she walked into the room.
Rainbow was struck with déjà vou, all she needed to see was a bucket of turnips, a sack of flour and a giant tuft of lint.
"Nothing." Pinkie mumbled. Rainbow gave her an unamused face.
"You don't look like it." Rainbow said. "How was the vet appointment?" Rainbow asked.
"Don't say that word!" Pinkie cried as a tear rain down her cheek.
"What, vet?" Rainbow asked.
"Yes!" She replied.
"Why?" Rainbow asked.
"Deyvetoopivtgummphydwn." Pinkie answered. Rainbow turned her ear towards Pinkie.
"THEY HAVE TO PUT GUMMY DOWN!" Pinkie shouted.
"WHAT?!" Rainbow shouted back. "How could they do that?" She asked.
"Apparently he's been in extreme pain for a month." Pinkie answered as she rolled her eyes. "You'd think you'd be able to tell if he was in pain!" She complained. "He said it would be better if they put him to sleep so he doesn't have to be in pain anymore." Pinkie said.
"I'm so sorry..." Rainbow said.
"I want what's best for him...." She said. "But at the same time, I-I-I-I" Pinkie started sobbing.
Rainbow opened her wings and wrapped them around her friend.
"Don't." Pinkie finished. "I want him to stay..." Pinkie said.
"It's okay," Rainbow said. "If I lost Tank, I would feel exactly the same." She said. "Everypony goes through losses. Me included." Rainbow said.
Pinkie sniffled. "W-what do you mean? You've only had one pet, and he's still alive." She said.
"Pets aren't the only things we lose." She said. "I lost both my parents in a weather factory accident." Rainbow recalled.
"Oh." Pinkie managed to say. "I just feel this is all.... unfair." She said.
"I know, nothing feels fair, but I want you to know that I'm here for you." Rainbow said.
"Thank you so much Dashie." Pinkie said as she wrapped her forelegs around the pegasus and squeezed tighter than ever before. "You always make my day." She blushed
Rainbow forced a smile as her eyes bugged out and she attempted to breath.
Rainbow drew in a big breath as soon as Pinkie let go.
She picked Gummy off of Pinkie's head and hoofed him to her.
"He's yours, spend his last few days together." Rainbow said.
"Thanks, Dashie." Her mane wasn't strait anymore, but it wasn't exactly 'poofy'. "Do you wanna come with me?" Pinkie asked.
"Um, I dunno, it's okay with you?" Rainbow asked.
"You silly filly! I'm the one who asked you in the first place!" Pinkie said.
"Well, okay!" Rainbow said.
"Gummy's gonna have the best last few days of his life, EVER!" She said. "Oh wait, you only have the last few days of your life once." She said.
Rainbow acted fast so Pinkie wouldn't feel down again.
"Oh well, let's go!" She said.
"Alright!" Pinkie said. "C'mon, Gummy! You're gonna have the best days of your life!"
The trio played ball in the park, took turns giving Gummy a piggy back ride, and had, indeed, the best three last days of Gummy's life.
Deep down inside, Pinkie had an awful feeling inside of her.
The lump in her throat was only getting bigger, for various reasons.
The worst was yet to come.
