The Dreadful Chapter Everyone's Been Dreading

Pinkie's eyes fluttered open. Her room was bright with natural light, so she guessed it was late in the morning.

She felt something draped over her body, so she looked over and found Rainbow Dash's feathered wing keeping her close. She felt her cheeks burn.

She tried as hard as she could to keep a gasp in her mouth, but it escaped. Luckily, Rainbow didn't wake up.

Pinkie attempted to get out from under her wing, but failed when Rainbow grunted and tightened her wing around the pink pony.

Though she did remember one thing: pegasus wings are extremely sensitive.

She found her hoof touching the appendage of Rainbow's blue wing.

It retracted a bit, but did not close. Her wing's grasp softened enough for Pinkie to roll right out from under.

Once she was off her bed, she stretched. She glanced at her cyan friend.

She was quite surprised she had not waken up when she touched the most sensitive part of her body.

Her heart sank when she remembered what day it was.

It was Wednesday. Three days after her visit to the vet. Her mane drooped down, but not quite deflated and her vibrant pink colours faded.

She slowly walked back over to her bed and touched Rainbow's wing, harder this time.

It retracted again, this time back to her side and she snapped awake.

"Who! Wha!" Rainbow blurted. "Oh, hey Pinks!" She looked at Pinkie's sad face. "What's wrong?" She asked.

"It's Wednesday." Pinkie said as she sat on her haunches and frowned.

"And what's that supposed to mean?" Rainbow asked. "Every Wednesday is 'sad day'?" Rainbow joked.

Pinkie eyed Gummy with a sad face.

"Oh..." Rainbow said. "Right. What time's the appointment?" She asked.

"An hour." Pinkie replied. She sniffled and a tear streaked her cheek.

"Oh, don't be like that..." Rainbow said in a comforting tone as she floated out of bed and placed a hoof on her shoulder. She spread her forelegs out and smiled.

Pinkie took the invitation and jumped into Rainbow's hooves. This time, Pinkie's touch was as soft as a kitten, and didn't basically squish her to death.

Rainbow enjoyed Pinkie's gentleness, because it probably wouldn't last long.

"I don't know what I would do without you, Dashie." Pinkie said. Dash felt her cheeks warm up. "I would probably would've been a nervous breakdown."

"Heheh, no problem, what are friends for?" Pinkie smiled.

She still is a nervous breakdown. She joked in her head.

"Are you ready to go?" Rainbow asked. Pinkie gulped and sighed.

"Yeah, I think so." Pinkie said.

"Ok, let's go." Rainbow said.

Pinkie picked up her green friend and placed him on her head.

She nodded and followed Rainbow out the door.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Pinkie Pie?" The vet called.
Pinkie and Rainbow stood up.
"Follow me." He said.
The two mares followed the stallion through the hall and came into a room.
"Before we begin, we understand it's hard letting a pet go, so I'll wait outside so you can say goodbye.
Pinkie nodded. The vet smiled and closed the door after he left.
Rainbow looked back at Pinkie, who already had tears streaming down her face.
Rainbow nodded.
Gummy's eyes blinked out of sync like they always did.
Pinkie clenched her eyes shut and bit her lip. She made a small whimpering noise.
Rainbow settled her hooves on Pinkie shoulders.
"Ssshhhhh..." She mumbled. "It's okay." She gave herself permission to be mushy for things like this.
If Pinkie said anything about this to anypony, she would deny it.
She hugged her pink friend from behind.
Pinkie sniffled once before she started speaking.
"Gummy, you have no idea how much more fun you've made my life, and... I know it's gonna be hard without you, but I pinkie promise you I won't be sad." She said as she slowly and sombrely acted out the actions to her own promise.
She started to uncontrollably sob.
"I'm just *hic* so sorry that *hic* I couldn't help *hic* you sooner so you could stay with us." Pinkie said.
"Oh, Pinkie. Don't talk like that, it wasn't your fault." Rainbow said as she hugged Pinkie around the waist.
Pinkie looked at Rainbow and then back at Gummy.
"I-I'll never f-forget y-you." Pinkie said. Tears slipped from both mare's eyes. "Goodbye." Pinkie finished.
Rainbow wiped the tears off her face before Pinkie turned around.
"I know you were crying." Pinkie said after she turned around.
"Can the vet come in?" Rainbow asked.
Pinkie nodded slowly as she clenched her eyes shut. Rainbow motioned the vet to come back in.
"All set?" The vet asked.
"Mhm." Pinkie said.
"Ok." The vet said. He he took a needle that had a liquid in it.
He levitated the needle with his horn towards Gummy. The alligator obliviously stared forward.
Pinkie grabbed Dash and shoved her face into her chest. Rainbow's heart jumped by the pink pony's sudden actions. She started sobbing uncontrollably into Rainbow's blue fur.
The unsettling feeling of wetness spread across her chest as Pinkie cried harder and harder. Rainbow soothingly ran her hoof through her now straitening mane.
Pinkie lifted her head soon enough to see the needle being injected into Gummy's body. She bit her lip.
Tears rolled freely down Dash's cheek as she frowned.
Pinkie stepped forward and reached her hoof out. Her hoof met with Gummy's scaly stomach. He was still breathing steadily, but she knew it would stop very soon.
She felt a hoof on her shoulder and turned around to see Rainbow's reassuring, tear streaked face.
She looked back at her companion.
His breathing was getting slower and slower.
Her initial reflex was to call for a doctor or something to help him, but in her heart, she knew what had to be done, and it was supposed to be done.
His breathing became so distant that she could barely feel his moving stomach.
Pinkie's eyes basically became waterfalls, and Rainbow tried to comfort her, but it was no use.
There was no way to get her to stop crying for her dying pet.
The two watched as Gummy's chest gracefully stopped moving, and his purple eyes drooped shut out of sync, one last time.
Rainbow and Pinkie's head tipped down in silence.
The only noise to be heard through the room was Pinkie's soft sobs over her passed pet.
