Chapters Guardians of Equestria: legend of spade
There were three mares standing there, one being Princess Celestia. The two others I couldn’t see well, due to being frozen.
“Is he going to be okay?” one of the mares asked the Princess.
“He should be fine,” Celestia said in the calm voice she always had.
“So this is the stallion that helped you seal me away?”
Suddenly, memories from a thousand and eighteen years ago rushed back into my head like a waterfall.
“W-where am I?” I asked still dazed from being awakened.
“Oh good, you can speak!” Celestia excitedly stated. “Well my most faithful guardian, you’re back in Equestria. Though you never really left, you were just asleep if you will.”
“Oh…” I replied. As my head started to clear, I scanned the horizon to see we were in Canterlot garden. It was very sunny, which I guess is pleasant to see when you first wake up. I looked to Celestia and as my vision finally cleared, I recognized one of the other mares, and shockingly, it was Luna. I jumped back the best my wobbly legs allowed me. Expecting a fight, I grabbed the closest think I could, a gardening spade.
“How did thou escape!?” I yelled at Luna, thinking she was still possessed by Nightmare Moon’s spirit. Celestia stopped me and stood in front of Luna who backed away from my reaction.
“Spade, everything is fine, Nightmare Moon is gone, only Luna remains now,” Celestia reassured me. I lowered my guard after hearing that and set the gardening tool back down.
“So you’re Spade?” the third mare excitedly asked stepping in front of Celestia, getting a bit too close. “I’ve read so much about you. I’m Twilight Sparkle,” she said with a big smile and her hoof out for me to shake.
“Tis nice to meet ye,” I replied reluctantly shaking her hoof.
“Well, Twilight, I believe it would be best for you to return to your friends in Ponyville. As for you my sister, I think you should rest up to raise the moon later. I think it’s time we discussed why you’re here, Spade,” Celestia explained.
“Oh, I see, well best of luck to you, Spade!” Twilight said as she and Luna left the garden.
“Well, She appears to be quite stimulated by my presence,” I muttered as she left
“After the incident, I made sure The Guardians were remembered and recorded through history.”
“I thought we were supposed to remain a secret so other countries wouldn’t hunt us down.”
“A lot has changed in the last thousand years. I thought it was time we all moved forward and knew about Guardian Star Swirl and his apprentice Spade.”
“Star Swirl….” I repeated in a woeful tone.
“I know it hurts, Spade, but his loss led to the safety of Equestria and even the world. Now, I think it’s time we worked your strength up again. You are Guardian now,” she explained as I followed her into the castle.
“So what hath made you release me?”
“You sound like you wanted to stay frozen” she chuckled
“No, I just believed my time here to be done.”
“Well, recently many attacks were made on our country, from discord to a Changeling invasion. And, call me crazy, I thought it would be a good idea to have my guardian back.”
“Discord? Changelings? What about the peace treaty made with them years ago?
“All will be answered in time, but as for now, let your training begin.” Celestia opened the door to a fully stocked armory with a training room in the center. “So, Spade, choose a weapon from the armory.”
“You don’t hath my sword?”
“It was lost many years ago in the Griffon Raid of Canterlot Castle.”
“What all happened during my absence!?”
“I’ll direct you to the archives when we’re done here. Now, let’s get started.” Celestia handed me a basic guard’s longsword from the shelf. “I assume you’ll be using one of these?”
“But of course,” I swung it testing the weight
“Wonderful, I’ll be using a sabre as usual. But enough talk, have at you!”
She drew her blade and the training session began. She won all the fights as she always did; I was never able to beat the Princess back in the day. After several hours of training, she felt I was back in perfect condition and instructed me to go to the archives to catch up on the history I missed.
“Fantastic, I get to read for hours…” I groaned. A librarian walked up to me and told me she had all the necessary books for me to read.
“Follow me,” she instructed.
“Why, tis like grade school all over again.”
“I know. I’m not a huge fan of reading either.”
“How ironic, considering thou art a librarian.”
She chuckled. “Well what better way to earn knowledge than being at a library.”
“I see.”
“Well, here they all are,” as we stopped at the table.
“Do I really hath to read all of these?” I said with my mouth agape at a table with at least thirty books on it.
“A lot happens in a thousand years doesn’t it?” she smiled sarcastically, trotting away.
Several hours had passed as I read every book in front of me. It was night by that point, and the moon had been raised. I was just getting up to head to my quarters when Luna walked in.
“Good evening, Guardian Spade.” She nervously greeted me. She had every reason be nervous, seeing as she was possessed by an evil spirit, destroying our friendship and killing one of our best friends, who was also the previous Guardian.
“What does thou want? Here to kill me like Star Swirl?”
She trotted up and kneeled to me. “I am here to beg for your forgiveness. I am truly sorry for my past. I wasn’t myself. I was jealous of my sister and because of that I was taken over by the Spirit of Nightmares. Please… forgive me.”
It was shocking to have Princess Luna kneel to me, much less beg for my forgiveness with tears welling in her eyes.
I touched my heart. “You are forgiven, for I too know what it feels like to be possessed.” I comforted her.
“Is there anything I can do to repay you for your kindness?” she asked me, wiping her eyes with her hoof.
“Well, you could show me to my quarters,” I replied with a smile and a wink.
“Fair enough” she countered smiling as she walked me there. “You have a big day ahead of you my friend. Please be prepared.”
She hugged me before I went inside. I had no clue what was happening tomorrow morning but I knew I would never forget it.

Chapter II: A New Companion
It was a new day, and this was the day I started my second life. I walked out of my room in the west tower, breathing in the morning air and headed down to the courtyard, a messenger galloped up to me when I arrived there.
“Excuse me sir, but are you Spade?”
“Yes, that would be me.”
“Then this would be for you.” He handed me a note and galloped away.
The not had a royal seal on it. I opened the note and it said to meet Princess Celestia in the guard barracks for reasons she would explain when I arrived. I closed the note and headed there. When I arrived, Celestia was standing there with a line of Guards and Adventurers.
“What’s happening here?” I asked the Princess
“Spade, its time… time to choose you companion.” She responded in serious yet sorrowful tone.
I shuttered at the thought of traveling with someone else, and don’t get me started on training some pony. “Do I hath to..?”
“I’m sorry, but yes you do. It’s time to move on.”
“Fine…” I agreed.
“Then let’s get started shell we? Spade, this is General Nova, New captain of the royal guard. And this is Shining Armor, ex captain of the royal guard.”
“Nice to meet you both” I greeted Shaking nova’s hoof.
“likewise.” Nova replied
“Now Spade,” Shining chimed in, “we’ve gathered these warriors because we feel they are fit to assist you on your journey.”
I scanned all the warriors chosen for me, all large burly stallions, they seemed they could handle themselves in a fight, but none had the spark that I was looking for, one that said, “I will fight for the good of the people and to keep them safe, not just to have the chance to smash some skulls.” My eyes drifted out side of the lineup, and I saw her standing behind Nova. The perfect companion and perhaps a new friend. a unicorn with a white mane half in a ponytail the other half hanging out. she also had a grey coat, bright blue eyes, and golden necklace.
“How about her?” I asked
She looked up, surprised. “M-me?”
Nova stepped in front of her. “This is my daughter Faith; she is not one of the available warriors. Besides I’m not sure I want my daughter running off with a Colt I’ve never met before.”
“No offense to any pony here but I just can’t see any of ye traveling with me. I need some pony I can relate to, not a juggernaut, again no offense.”
“None taken,” said a very burly stallion with an eye patch from the lineup.
“I still don’t approve of this and I will not let you take her,” Nova continued.
“Excuse me?” Faith interrupted, but I’m eighteen now and I happen to have a mind of my own, besides, I’m a talented archer and I think with some help I can handle myself.”
“Well, Faith would you like to travel with Spade?” Celestia asked. “This is a big decision and it might take some time to think about.”
Faith thought for a second, “I’ll give it a shot.” She smiled.
My ears perked up joyfully, Celestia and Shining Smiled, but Nova just rolled his eyes and trotted out. “I’ll see you at home, nova grumbled”
“Wonderful! You should gather you’re things and get ready for an adventure, but please, don’t pack too much. Everything you bring you will be carrying on you back,” Celestia stated.
“Understood, Princess. I’ll meet you at Donut Joe’s okay, Spade?” Faith replied then galloped out of the room.
“And as for you Spade, I’m giving you and her a week before you need to leave. Here is you’re objective,” she explained handing me an envelope with several documents explaining the location, important people, and the objective its self, however one thing confused me, it was a small golden card that said royal treasury.
“What’s this? What had happened to the bits we used as currency?” I asked.
“Nothing, but with this all you need to do is hand it to the pony you’re paying and the money will be taken out of the Special Forces fund in the treasury to pay for it.” She explained.
“I see, I suppose I should be on my way,” As I stated exiting the guard barracks.
“Oh and one more thing, times have changed from olden days. Don’t expect things to be the same, and you should also work on that old accent you have. It’s very slight, so getting rid of it should be as simple as talking to people without it.”
“Um, right, I’ll try to lose it,”
Shining met with me outside, as we started to trot to the Donut Joe’s.
“Hey don’t let Nova bother you okay, he’s just a tough pony.”
“He doesn’t, but he dost remind me a bit of Star Swirl.”
Shining chuckled, “I see, so, why Faith?”
“Something about her just seemed, right,” I replied.
“If I didn’t know any better id think you had a crush on her,” he smiled.
I rolled my eyes, “if I were to hath crush on her I don’t believe I’d want to put her in danger.”
“But you would want to get closer to her.” Shining continued.
“Silence yourself.” I laughed.
Shining laughed as well, “Well I wouldn’t worry about it, I had a crush on my little sister’s foal sitter.”
“And how did that work out for you?”
“We’re married and leaving to go on our honey moon in about…” Shining looked to the clock tower in Canterlot Square, his eyes widened and a look of distress hit his face. “About 10 minutes ago…”
“I suppose we should part ways then?” I replied sarcastically.
“Uh, right, I gotta run. Good luck with your girlfriend!” he shouted galloping off.
“She is not my girlfriend!” I yelled back, my face bright red.
Faith trotted up behind me without me noticing, “Who’s not?”
I jumped, “ah! H-hey you hath arrived earlier t-then expected.”
“Yep, all packed up and ready for an adventure,” she smiled, “the donut shop is about 10 minutes that way,” She said pointing down Mane Street.
“Lead on then, Faith.”
“You sure you can keep up, Guardian?” She said lifting an eyebrow.
“I think I can manage,” I replied doing the same.
At this time I was still questioning my judgment of Faith. Though I would soon realize this would probably be the best choice I had ever made.

Legend of Spade-Micro: The Long Walk Home
This section takes place during the walk to the train station with Luna and Twilight and then to Luna’s room.
“I think Spade hates me…” Luna sighed.
“Did you see how he reacted to me, Twilight Sparkle? I’m not sure that grabbing a weapon and preparing to kill me means ‘no hard feelings.’”
“Princess, the last thing he saw of you was getting sealed away. And, think of last Nightmare Night. It was hard for Everypony to adjust to you being, well, um…”
“Sane..?” Luna sighed again.
“Point is, it might take a while for him to adjust to the idea that you’re back to your old self again.”
“But what if he doesn’t? I can’t risk losing a… a…”
“A Guardian?” Twilight guessed.
“A brother figure,” she continued, tears starting to well in her eyes.
Luna turned away trying to hide her emotions like the strong mare she was. Twilight stopped her, resting her hoof on her shoulder.
Luna turned and smiled. “You are very wise Twilight Sparkle; Star Swirl would be very impressed.”
“About that, did Spade know Star Swirl?”
“Star Swirl the Bearded, was a Guardian just as Spade is. In fact, Star Swirl was Spade’s mentor and was trained directly by him and my sister.”
You could probably say Twilight’s mind was just blown, not only was this pony trained by her personal hero but also by her current mentor. So you could imagine her response would be quite excited.
“HE PERSONALLY KNEW BOTH OF THEM!?!”
“Um, well, yes, when I said he was like a sibling to me I meant it. I remember him telling me how he thought of me the same way and my sister like a mother. Um, does that make sense?”
“I understand perfectly.”
“Good, so I assume he thinks of Star Swirl like a father figure. That is why tis so important I fix this problem. He is the last friend I have left.”
“You don’t have others?”
“Neigh, I do not. They have… all passed.”
“Well, Princess, if it helps, I’d gladly be your friend, but on one condition.”
“What’s that?” Luna questioned.
“You have to help me get closer to Spade.” Twilight winked.
“Twilight Sparkle! You’re not pursuing a relationship art thou?”
Twilight laughed. “No, but he is the best way for me to learn more about Star Swirl and this Guardian thing I just learned about. Although he is sort of cute, in a celebrity kind of way. But don’t worry, I’ll try to stay away romantically.”
“Just apologize to him. I’m sure he’ll understand!” She smiled just as she boarded the train to head home.
“Good evening, Luna.” Celestia greeted her; she then noticed the look of distress and guilt on her sister’s face. “Luna, is something troubling you?”
“Spade…” Luna softly replied.
“Oh, I see. Well, if you’re going through what I think you are, then you know what you need to do.”
“I know sister, but I am unsure of how exactly to do that. An apology worthy of the things I’ve done needs to be thought out.”
“Do you need some time to yourself?”
“I think that would be best.”
Celestia left her room and reminded her that she needed to be ready to raise the moon at nine. The entire time she was preparing for the task she was also working through how to apologize to Spade.
When nine o’clock struck she flew to the royal balcony to raise the moon. She gathered her thoughts for a while and then walked to the archives room which was a short distance away. She opened the doors and was greeted by the staff, who instructed her to Spade’s table where he was studying. She turned the corner to see Spade walking out of the room. She then whispered to herself. “Ok, I am not going to get emotional and cry like a little filly, and that is a promise.”

It’s over… It’s finally over… Nightmare Moon has been defeated and Equestria is finally at peace.
