The Equestrian War Of The Monsters
The Nightmare & The Changes
Load Full StoryFire. Screaming. Destruction. Those things were seen and heard as Spike ran through the streets of some city that was ruled by hairless apes. He ran as fast as he could from the sounds of collapsing buildings and the shrieks of monstrous beings. Spike turned his head and watched two large titans slam through a building.
One of them was a gigantic ape with shaggy brown hair and dark gray skin. The ape’s eyes were red and pupilless and it had a mouth full of fangs that were dripping saliva. It was heavily muscled with large hands and feet that could crack a mountain in two.
The other beast had the body of a dragon, something very familiar to him and it had a sleek body. Its scales were a dark reddish brown scales with a tan underbelly with ripped wings to match. It had long arms and legs that were armed with light tannish claws. The draconic monstrosity had a large head with two spikes on his cheeks, two fins for ears, and a mouth with yellow stained fangs. A small, rhino-like horn stood atop its nose and it had bright red, glowing eyes.
The ape grabbed a piece from a building that looked like it was about to topple over and tossed it at the dragon which tossed it right back at the ape and hit it in the head causing it to stagger. The two beasts kept fighting as Spike watched in horror. However the dragon soon tossed the ape to it’s side but that also happened to be the same side Spike was on.
“RUN!!! THEY’RE NEARING THE SHELTER!!!!” Spike heard a hairless ape shout as it ran as fast as it could before it was crushed under the foot of the large ape.
What’s going on?! Why am I here in this… madness?! Spike thought as he ran behind a building. He turned and watched the dragon slam its tail into the ape’s stomach, sending it backwards into a building, causing chunks of it to fly. But as soon as the ape gained its focus, it took in a large breath before expelling a sonic roar towards the dragon, sending it across the paved road it stood upon until it slammed through a building, making it fall apart into rubble. The dragon got back to it’s feet, shook the rock and debris off and flapped it’s giant wings as it took to the skies. Spike watched as it flew away towards a radio tower and ripped off the antenna that had a sharpened point. The dragon then flung the antenna like a dart and pierced the ape.
Why are they fighting? What did they do to each other? He wondered as he watched the ape pull the tower out of its body and flung it to the side. Before the ape could return to the battle, the dragon bomb dived the ape and the force of the shock sent Spike backwards onto his rump. A moment later the dragon roared in triumph as it lifted the defeated beast over it’s head and soon after tossed it away like a rag doll. Before Spike took take a simple breath, the beast cocked its head towards Spike, causing him to gasp as he ran as fast and hard as he could when the monster ran towards him, ripping through the buildings like they were wet paper. Soon, Spike tripped and fell and soon found the beast standing over him, a smile of sorts on its maw as it glared at the young dragon.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH ME?!” He screamed at the draconic monster. It simply opened it’s jaw and released an ear splitting roar to the heavens above. It then shot it’s head down fast and closed it’s jaws around Spike.
“AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!” Spike screamed as he woke up in cold sweat. His scream made Twilight shoot up, get out of bed and run towards him.
“Spike, what happened?” She asked in a worried voice.
“I-I had a nightmare. T-There were these two monsters and… they fought in this city and when one of them was beaten, t-the other came after me and… it ate me Twilight. And it was a-a-a-” He tried to get out as tears started to fall from his eyes. Twilight grabbed a tissue box and passed it towards him.
“Ssh. It’s alright. It’s over. Now, what was the monster that ate you?” She asked in a gentle and motherly tone.
“A-a dragon. A b-big red d-dragon.” Spike replied.
“Oh my…. oh Spike. I’m so sorry.” Twilight said in a saddened tone.
“I-It’s not your fault. I-I just need to stop watching monster m-movies.” He said as tears stilled dropped.
“Come here. How about you sleep in my bed with me?” She asked. Spike simply smiled as he crawled out of his basket and hopped into Twilight’s bed. She giggled as she climbed into her bed and held the dragon in her hooves.
“If you have any bad dreams Spike, I’ll be right here for you.” Twilight said as she rubbed his scaly head. Spike rubbed his eyes to get the rest of the tears out of his eyes.
“T-thanks sis.” Spike said as he hugged her.
“Anything for my little brother.”
Later in the morning, Twilight Sparkle laid in her bed but soon smelled the most sweetest, most divine, most delectable food ever which meant one thing.
“Spike, what’s for breakfast?” She asked as she opened her eyes and rose from her bed.
“Grass pancakes and hash browns.” She heard his voice say along with the sound of something sizzling on a hot skillet. Twilight walked down the stairs into the dining room and saw the food laid out before her eyes.
“It looks delicious Spike. You’re the best chef I know.” She said with a smile as she placed the pancakes onto a plate.
“Thanks Twilight. It’s what you say that helps me through the day.” He rhymed as he grabbed his pancakes that were riddled with gems. Twilight rolled her eyes but smiled a little. She grabbed some forks and knives and laid them out so that she and Spike would easily eat their food. But as Twilight ate, she noticed something… weird about Spike. He wasn’t eating his pancakes. It’s as if he never even liked them in the first place. She was about to ask why until he said something that spooked her.
“Hey Twilight, do we have any chicken?” She gulped a hard lump as she just stared at him. Dragons were carnivores at heart so it was only a matter of time before Spike switched his diet but.. it wasn’t supposed to happen for a few more years.
“Um… I don’t think so. But go ahead and check.” She replied as she tried to find the words to say. Spike hopped off his seat and went to the fridge. He opened it and pulled out a packet of chicken thighs, wings and breasts and sat them down before closing the fridge. He then opened them and placed them on a skillet.
“Spike aren’t you going to-” Twilight started until she watched Spike roast the chicken with fire. But his fire was a different color. Instead of being that shamrock green it normally is, it was an ember orange like a normal dragon’s flame.
“Hm? You were saying Twilight?” Spike asked as he tore through the chicken. Twilight just stared at him with shock as he chomped down on the chicken as though it was a chicken. After a few minutes, he picked all the chicken pieces down to nothing but bones. She stared as he released a belch of fullness.
“Excuse me.” He said.
“Spike… did you um… go through puberty yet?” Twilight couldn’t help but ask.
“Nope. At least I don’t think so. Why?” He asked back.
“Because you went through a whole pack of chicken in a few minutes and plus your fire color changed.” She explained, causing the young dragon to give her a strange look. Spike, hoping to see if she was seeing things, blew out a small flame that was still retaining its green color.
“Twilight, are you seeing things? My flame’s the same color as always.” He said as he placed the skillet in the sink. Twilight shook her head a little and stared at him with a dumbstruck look on her face.
“S-sorry Spike I-I’m still a little shook up about this morning.” Twilight told him.
“Don’t worry. It’s a nightmare that passed. It’s… whoooo-” He said as he staggered backwards. Twilight ran up to him and held him up.
“Are you okay?” She asked him.
“I’m fine I just… just got woozy there for a minute. Maybe I should just-”
“Don’t worry. I’ll get you some medicine.” She said as she ran up to the bathroom.
Spiiiiiiiike. The young dragon heard a raspy voice sing when Twilight was out of sight. He turned his head and saw nopony around him.
“H-Hello?” He asked around.
Spiiiiiiike. Dangeeeeeer. The voice sang again. Spike started to get worried about the voice and hoped it wasn’t right. This was proved wrong when the ground beneath him started to rumble.
“W-What the-” He said as he tried to keep his balance. He then saw Twilight come out of the bathroom and next to him.
“Spike, i-is there a recorded earthquake in Ponyville?” Twilight asked. Before Spike could say anything, he heard a sound that was all too familiar.
“NO! NOT AGAIN!” He screamed as he placed his claws on his ear fins.
“Spike, what’s-”
“The other monster from my dream, it’s here! IT’S AFTER ME!”
