Spike's Tale: The First Journey
Years have passed since Twilight became a Princess and The Mane Six have grown and taken on greater responsibilities and, while still close, do not have as much time to spend with one another. Fluttershy, for instance is the leading authority in all of Equestria on wild life and their care. Due to it being in high demand to help preserve the balance with the critters that live with and around all of the ponies of Equestria, her time away from her friends has distanced her from them and with all of the added responsibility, she has lost the time for even the simplest of outings, such as her once weekly spa day with Rarity.
Rarity on the other hand is the designer in the most demand in all the land, because of this you have to make an appointment three months in advance for her to see you to take your request for her to make you a Rarity original. The real surprises come from Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash. Rainbow dash is now the Author of her own adventure series of books as well as lead pony of the Wonderbolts. After she met the real life Daring Do she decided she too wanted to tell the world of her adventures and travels and to that extent started writing her stories in the same fashion as her idol, and would have it she ended up being a bigger hit than the one she emulated.
Now we come to Applejack who originally all she wanted was to live on the Apple Farm and keep it going. It turns out that while she was good with apples she was also good as a sales pony and agriculture in general. She single hoofedly turned Sweet Apple Acres a multimillion Bit Business. Sweet Apple Acres is now the leading agricultural authority and produce retailer in Equestria, but it does not end there Apple Jack in her free time when she is not spending time with her friend goes out and brings orphan fillies to live on Sweet Apple Acres where they can lend a hoof if they wish and also makes sure they attend school in Ponyville so that they get a well-rounded education.
As For Pinkie Pie, she took over Sugar Cube Corner with Mr. and Mrs. Cakes’ children. Both at the prime age of seventeen, Pumpkin and Pound Cake have learned to run the bakery with a gusto to rival their parents with the help of their foal-sitter, Auntie Pinkie. And with their combined abilities, Sugar Cube Corner is no longer just a simple baked goods store but the party and sweet confections nerve center of all Equestria. If there is a party or event happening in the land you can bet Sugar Cube Corner has a hand in it somewhere from either the decorations that are being hung, the entertainment being provided or the sweet delicacies waiting to be devoured, assuming Pinkie has not already eaten them.
After her coronation, Twilight had become involved with the Equestria politics and lead the great nation alongside her mentors and sister in law. With added responsibility to such a young mare, Spike’s role of number one assistant for her grew tedious with added tasks to accomplish every day. Despite the hard work, he had earned himself the title of Equestria’s Envoy, venturing to other territories to hold meetings and deliver messages from the Princesses to their allies with ease. Growing up with a family who loved him, he was becoming a proud envoy, graciously serving with his life, even at the young age of eighteen. Luckily with his background of adventuring from his time in Ponyville and all the adventures he went on with the Mane six he was uniquely qualified for the position for very few as young as he had the experience and knowledge to handle such a heavy responsibility.
He was hesitant to except this new role for Twilight and Equestria at large due to the fact it would mean leaving everything and everyone he knew and cared about for extended periods of time but his curiosity and need to do Twilight proud won out, so in the end he accepted the position. Since accepting the position he has been sent all over Equestria From Manehatton to Philliedelphia to Cloudsdale so that he would be familiar with the ins and outs of all of Equestria but still he has not been sent to do the one thing he has wanted to do most since accepting this position and that is to travel outside of Equestria.
That was until the day after this year’s Summer Sun Celebration when a Message arrived via courier to Twilight and Spikes rooms. The courier came in and hand delivered the rolled tube of parchment to Spike, Bowed and left their living quarters. Spike, thinking the message was for Twilight walks into her study and place the rolled parchment on her desk.
As he lays it down he says, “Hey Twi you have a message looks important!”
Twilight seeing the Tube of rolled Parchment in her in box unrolls it and begins to read it aloud,
“To Spike you are royally summoned to appear in The Throne Room to receive official business pertaining to the handling of royal affairs dealing with the international relations and matters of state between the Griffin Empire and Equestria you are to arrive at the Throne Room tomorrow at noon Please prepare for and extended and possibly hard trip over land
Sincerely Celestia and Luna”
Twilight looks up from the royal missive with an awestruck look on her face because for the first time it was finally hitting her that her little dragon was almost completely grown.
Wiping the tear of pride from her eye, she takes a moment to compose herself once again before going to spike and embracing him in a hug a telling him, “You should prepare but before you do go to the wardrobe in my room that is right next to my personal collection books there will be something in there for you.” Spike also choked up nods his head to her to signal he understood and heads out to do what she said with her walking behind him. When he arrives at the wardrobe he notices that the magical lock she normally keeps on it is gone.
When he opens it up he find traveling outfit designed by rarity inside, along with a book from Rainbow Dash, and a Hand Constructed Travel pack made by Apple Bloom. Stuffed in the travel pack was food from Applejack and Pinkie Pie and a guide to nature from Fluttershy, but while all that was nice and heartwarming it wasn’t what had him choked up. Hanging from the hook was a locket with Twilights element of harmony on it inside the locket was a picture of him and twilight from when they were first starting their journey together that would eventually lead to the future they both now shared.
He took the locket off the hook and placed it around his neck.
He wiped the tears from his eyes and said to Twilight, “You are the best friend I could ever have Twi I love you more than any gemstone and position given to me. You are my Treasure.” And with that he gave her a hug.
Spike's Tale: The First Journey
Chapter 1:Greetings and Farewells
That night Spike stayed up until just about four in the morning. he had packed his stuff away, but with all the anxiety built up inside of him he just could not calm down. So he began to pacing around his room. Spike just could not sleep, even when he laid down to rest Spike's mind just would not calm down. He kept wondering just what he would see and experience on this trip. Not to mention that this would be his first trip as the Envoy of Equestria outside the protected borders of the land.
When he finally managed to make himself go to sleep, his mind continuously conjured images of all the wondrous things he could possibly see. The great Griffin Palace, the Iridescent Mountains of The Crystal Empire to the Gemstone Sea he would cross to enter the Griffin Empire. One thing he kept seeing in his dreams repeatedly was a Volcanic Island surrounded by reefs on all but a single side, roughly in the shape of a star. The island just looked so wonderfully peaceful, during this part of his dream. He saw himself on the beach in his new clothes sporting a handsome mustache and strolling along a trail cut through the dense foliage of the island. It was as he was approaching a source of noise that sounded similar to that of a blacksmiths hammer beating upon steel. It was as he reached this part of the dream he felt an odd sensation and woke up screaming.
It was as his tail crashed into the rapidly followed by the weigh of his body that he realized he had fallen out of his bed. It was after he took a moment to check that he had not broken his tail or wings that he noticed the sun was a few hours past dawn. Seeing how far the sun had risen he rushed to check a clock to make sure that he had not overslept. The last thing he wanted was to be late to the briefing of his first international assignment. When he found his clock it read nine twenty two in the morning. Seeing that he was not late he sighed with relief and started getting ready for his audience with the princesses. He checked his gear one last time before he left the room to make sure he grabbed everything he might want to bring, and as a last thought he threw his mustache in the bag as well he had always been fond of it.
As the time of his appointment with the princesses neared he became ever increasingly anxious. He kept asking himself, “Are my scales shined and cleaned enough? Is there anything stuck in my teeth?”
it was at eleven fifteen that he realized that he was going to drive himself mad with worry if he did not do something. So with that in mind he started off toward the kitchens to get a snack before his appointment. As he walked through the palace to get to the kitchens, he passed the Great Hall. While hurriedly following the smell of fresh cupcakes, he accidentally ran face first into the outstretched wings of a pony that he had never before seen in this part of the palace. It was one of Luna’s guards.
“Sorry did not see you there, was sort of lost in thought. Have a good day, bye.” He hurriedly said as he continued on his way to the kitchens. As he opened the doors to the palace kitchens that he saw a tray laid on the counter lined with nothing but ice cream filled cupcakes. Beside the pan was a note.
Dear spike,
By now you have probably worried your self into a ravenous appetite, in preparation for this i ordered these cupcakes from Pinkie Pie as a special order for you and you only.
With Love your closest friend.
Twilight.
After reading the letter from twilight he realized just how lucky he was to have her as his friend. even with so much on her shoulders these days she still took time out to make sure that he was always taken care of and happy. He put the letter down and gingerly picked up one of the cupcakes she had made just for him. he took a bite of it and savored it letting the cold creamy goodness calm him down and soothe his anxiety.
After finishing every delectable bite of each and every oh so delicious cupcake that he looked up at the clock on the wall. The time was elven forty-five not leaving much time until his meeting with the Princesses was to begin. After checking to make sure that he was not covered in ice cream and crumbs he hurriedly left the kitchens and made his way to the throne room.By the time he reached the throne room, barely five minutes remained before his meeting was to begin.
Just as he was beginning to fret he heard “You may now enter Spike.” From the other side of the large ornate doors. Taking one last deep breath he pushed open the doors and proceeded to walk into the throne room.
In all the time he spent in here as Twilight’s aide he had never realized how intimidating it could be to stand in front of the Princesses awaiting their decree. As he waited for them to say something he could see Luna and Twilight smiling at him while Celestia did her best to maintain all the dignity of her position as she informed him of his assignment.
“You have been brought here today Spike because it is the belief of many people that you are finally ready for your first assignment in another country. We do not commonly make a dragon the Envoy of Equestria so it is of the gravest importance for you to understand the gravity of your position.” As Celestia said this she began to smile despite her best efforts, because just as she had watched Twilight grow and mature so too had she watched Spike do the same.
“You will leave today on the five o’clock train to go to the Crystal Empire. You will arrive there around six in the morning the following day. Once you arrive at the Crystal Empire you and your Guard will make your way to the palace where Cadence will have some documents for you to sign on behalf of Equestria.” Celestia sighed heavily after saying this and continued with,
“From there, you will receive the rest of your briefing from her for she has a sealed scroll waiting for you with the specifics of what exactly we need of you in your official capacity as Equestria’s Envoy to the Gryphons empire of the griffins.”
Luna looks around as if something is wrong, when finally a knock is heard on the throne room door.
“Here is your guard. He is one of the top ponies in the Lunar Guard, and has even received awards on his flying from Rainbow Dash herself. Without further ado I present Storm Blade!” and as that was being said in walked a Stallion the same color as the darkest blue the stormy night sky could have ever produce fading to a silver grey as it reached his legs. His deep purple mane was highlighted with a lighter blue green of the same shade seen when a tornado is in the area with a diamond of the same grey as that of his legs adorning his forehead. It was as he took of his crimson sunglasses that Spike recognized him.
“Oh, Hi sorry about earlier.” Spike said embarrassedly now realizing the pony he ran into early was not only one of Princess Luna’s personal guard but now his traveling companion.
“Well for future reference it might help get around with your eyes and not your nose regardless of how good the food from the kitchen smells, ok?”
Spike scratched the back of his neck nodded his head, “yeah you’re probably right. I just can’t help it when I am nervous my stomach sort of takes over. And it doesn’t help when you can smell the cupcakes that were in there waiting.” With that said everyone in the throne room started laughing making spike once again feel a little embarrassed to be caught for his true motive of accidentally bumping into Storm Blade.
“Well it seems that since you two already seem to have already run into one another no further intro is needed. I recommend you both get some food that is not solely sweet related and then say your good byes.” With that said Celestia nodded to Luna and Twilight and led them down from the dais officially ending court in the Throne Room.
When Twilight and Luna reached Spike and Storm Blade Twilight tilted her head signaling for them to follow them out of the chamber.
"So Storm Blade is it true that you were one of the student’s Rainbow herself helped train up for Luna for her personal guard?” Twilight asked as they walked toward the dining hall.
“Yes it is, and in all my years I have never had a more demanding instructor than Commander Rainbow Dash. She always demanded the best out of us and should we have failed to deliver she would hand us over to the not so tender mercies of her predecessor Spitfire. Believe me when I tell you between the two of them I would rather deal with Spitfire when I mess up than Rainbow Dash because the Commander can come up with an obstacle course like none other. By the time you are done with it you can barely stand let alone move a single wing muscle.” Storm Blade said, shuddering with the memory of how bad those obstacle courses could be.
They continued down the hall a little Further when Storm Blade turned and asked Spike, “So how and when did you get taller and grow wings? I was under the Impression that only greed made dragons grow bigger.”
“Normally that is true, but due to the high level of magic I was regularly exposed to growing my dragon physiology was altered just enough that about the time I hit the age of twelve I had a large growth spurt bringing me to my current state.” Spike said happily walking along side Storm Blade.
Trust me the first thing we did when I witnessed his growth was to check his room for the beginnings of a treasure horde and then took him to the doctors. They said at the current time this is as large as they see him becoming. Which was a relief to us all.” Twilight said remember how the first time he grew when they lived in Ponyville he became a nasty greedy dragon.
Shaking her head as if to toss away the memory of the event she continued, “After we found out everything was normal with spike or as normal as you can ever call him, things went back to being pretty much normal.” Twilight said this while suppressing a laugh knowing that nothing is quite ever completely normal with their group of friends.
When they reached the entrance of the dining hall Luna opened the doors to allow Spike and Twilight in, but as Blade was about to pass her she stopped him.
“You are to leave your Lunar Guard armor with the steward we do not need any mishaps, such as what has occurred before. Do you understand me?” Luna said to him in a serious but quiet voice barely louder than the rustle of the night wind. Blade nodded and gave a small bow as he acknowledged what she said.
“I will not fail Princess not this time. Rest assured I will not let him come to any harm. I will make you proud of me again, I swear it!” The last part he said with conviction of a child desperate to make ammends. As if his whole being depended on this one mission, and with that said Luna stepped aside and let Storm Blade enter the dining hall.
"Just be careful and make sure you both return safely to us. we can not afford to loose either of you." Having said that Luna walked away taking a plate of food with her, so that she may dine with her sister.
For a long time after Storm Blade was never truly sure whether he had truly heard that or if it had all been a trick of his mind .
Spike sat down at the table and was almost instantaneously served with a plate of pristine rubies and emeralds to which he began to steadily work on consuming. While he ate he observed Blade Storm the pony seemed pretty confident but there was something about him that just seemed off, like the guy was worried that all the world was bearing down on his shoulders and he was determined to shoulder it alone. He sat apart from the rest of them. And ate his turnip and apple slice sandwich.
“Twilight what do you know of Storm Blade?” Spike asked quietly so as not to be overheard.
“Well beyond what was told to you when he arrived in the throne room, not much. He is one of Luna's most trusted gaurds and is almost always at her side. He has had some trouble in the past, but not much is known about the incident. Beyond that not much.” Twilight whispered in return to Spike.
The rest of the time before they arrived at the train platform to leave for the Crystal Empire was uneventful. He picked up his stuff and double checked it one last time just for good measure. After that he just wandered around to a couple of his favorite spots. At four in the afternoon he arrived at the train station. He was a little sad he had not seen Rainbow Dash or any of the others before his departure. Letting out a heavy sigh he entered the train station.
“Surprise!!!!” Pinkie yelled from the top of her lungs all the while swinging from the railings just to land in front of him to give him a big hug. Looking around he saw most of the old gang Pinkie was there as was evident with her greeting and the decorations hung from floor to ceiling. As was Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Fluttershy.
“Hey Spike just do me one favor” Rainbow was saying, “Make everything awesome, who knows I might be able to use it in one of my books.”
Spike hugged Rainbow and said gratefully, “I will do my best Rainbow Dash, who knows it might even be better than some of the adventures you have had.”
Applejack approached “Hey, remember to stand yer ground and follow your gut. That is unless it is rumbling for sweets. That can be a bad thing, like when you over indulged in ice cream.” Everyone having heard what Applejack said started busting out laughing.
Then there was Fluttershy, who quietly approached Spike and gave him a hug and said so quietly almost no one heard, “Be careful, we will miss you Spike.” And with that said she gave him an almost sisterly kiss on the cheek and walked away. leaving Spike glowing in the warmth of the affection given to him by all of his friends.
In the Back of the room off to himself Storm Blade watched a little envious of Spike. wishing that he too could have friends like that but ever since his failed mission five years before the others in the Lunar Guard treated him like a pariah, but maybe something would change if you completed this mission successfully. Maybe, just maybe he could have a friend again and for just one person to be proud of him again.
By the time everything had finally quieted down it was time to get on the train bound for the Crystal Empire, and after everyone had given their final hugs he and Blade Storm boarded the train.
Spike's Tale: The First Journey
Storm boarded the train behind Spike. He was amazed at the gathering of all these important Ponies to see Spike off. In all his years he only rarely saw gatherings like this and most of those were at things like the Grand Galloping Gala and Summer Sun Celebration, but this was just for Spike. A young dragon venturing out on his own for the first time. When they boarded the train a gentleman dressed as the steward of the train bowed and led them to the compartment they would share for this leg of the journey. When he entered the cabin he noticed a sitting area off to one side with a small kitchen on the other, and at the back were the beds where they were to sleep. In all the time he had spent traveling he had never once been in a train cabin as luxurious as this one. After scanning the room and it amenities he took a seat in the sitting area and placed a small bag down on the end table beside him.
As the train pulled out of the station he cast one last longing look towards Luna’s tower. It was about this time the steward made an appearance once again in their cabin.
“Sir.” He said Getting storms attention. “This was left with me by Princess Luna, she said to give it to you after the train set out.” With that the steward laid a piece of rolled parchment down tied with a deep blue ribbon and sealed with a wax seal like that of Princess Luna’s cutie mark. He gingerly untied the roll of parchment and broke the seal.
Dear Storm,
I know you are taking this hard, being sent away from me after everything that has happened, but this is not a punishment. I wanted you to go on this journey with Spike so that you might have the chance to make some real friends. I did my best over the years to guide you but, I fear I did you a great disservice, after all before meeting you I knew nothing of how to raise children and I fear I did not give you all opportunities I should have. Take care of yourself and know you will always be my special colt.
Return Safely,
Princess Luna
As he read and reread these words tears began to trickle down his muzzle and he began to cry. She had sent this to reassure him that she was not mad at him and he just could not believe it. He was sure she must have been mad at him for something. Why else would she have sent him away? But it turns out she had been thinking of him all along.
It was at this moment that Spike came over from where he was sitting on his bed.
“Hey, are you okay? Is there anything I can get you? I know we only just met earlier today but…I don’t think anyone should cry while all alone.” Spike said this to him meaning to cheer him up but in the end this just made him cry even harder. Storm was not used to anyone outside of Princess Luna showing open concern for him and that left him completely unprepared for this current situation.
He took a moment to gather himself back together, got up and fetched himself drink of water before turning to Spike and saying, “Th...Thank you for the offer but no, I am fine. I just was not prepared for what was written in the letter.” He walked back to his seat and sat down doing his best to keep his composure.
Spike came over sat in the chair across from him and asked, “If you don’t mind me asking what is your and Princess Luna’s relationship? You seem very close to her.” Storm looked over at the young dragon sitting across from him and shook his head.
“She is sort of like family to me. She raised me from the time I was a young colt. I was nine years old when she found me wandering through a mountain pass barely holding myself up. She took me in and brought me to the palace in Canterlot and pretty much raised me. Princess Celestia was not originally too fond of this but in the end she gave in seeing how happy her sister was. She made me promise to always protect Luna and make her happy to which I readily agreed to, and the rest, as they say, is history.” Storm told Spike this all the while trying to keep his emotions in check so that he did not break down again and start crying.
It was as the two of them sat there sharing one another’s company that their stomachs growled at almost the same time breaking the tension and causing both of them to laugh. Storm stood up and looked to Spike and asked tentatively, “Would you like to join me for a meal? I mean I will understand if you don’t. I just…I mean…”
Spike smiled while looking at storm and said, “Sure it would give me a break from worrying about what all is waiting for me in the Crystal Empire at the capitol.” With that said they left their room and headed for the dining cart. When they arrived at the dining cart they saw something that neither of them could believe. Sitting at a table at the far end of the room was Rarity with her two children her son Cobalt and his twin sister Aquamarine. Seeing this, Spikes jaw nearly hit the ground he had not seen Rarity since Cobalt and Aquamarine’s third birthday almost a year ago. They walked over and she gestured for them to sit down across from her and her little ones who at that moment were arguing over who got the blue crayon.
“It has been a while Spike, I hope you have been well.” Rarity said while bringing out a second blue crayon and giving it to Cobalt who appeared to have lost the Great Blue Crayon Decision.
“Who is your friend?” Rarity asked, nodding her head in Storm’s direction. “I do not recall having met him before.”
Spike chuckled and said, “He is accompanying me on my first international assignment as Equestria’s Envoy. His name is Storm Blade.” When Rarity heard his name the look that crossed her face was like if Rainbow Dash had done a Sonic Rainboom in front of her face with no time to protect her mane.
“You mean to tell me that they assigned Princess Luna’s…..Oh dear is it really alright to do that…you know with his background and ties to Princess Luna.” Spike looked aghast at rarity, not having expected at reaction like this.
“Rarity, regardless of what you may or may not know it is rude to treat someone like you just did to Storm. Honestly, I am surprised that you of all people would have a reaction like that.” Said Spike, hardly believing he was having to scold one of his closest friends and defend someone he had only just met earlier that day, but her behavior was completely out of line.
Rarity, looking taken aback at Spike’s vehement defense of Storm Blade, did not know what to make of it. She had only thought that they would have sent someone with a better track record to guard Spike. While all this was going on, Storm had retrieved his food and started to head back to their cabin feeling as if he was unwanted by Spike’s friends. That is when something unexpected happened.
“I am sorry darling, please come back. I should know better than to judge people by now and if Spike vouches for you then you are fine in my book.”
Storm looked back at Rarity and Spike who were both motioning for him to come back and sit down. The next couple of hours passed with amiable conversation. Everyone at the table shared stories back and forth including how Spike used to have a huge crush on her, and how she met her husband due to an inadvertent action of Spike’s. She told of how one day when Twilight and Spike had come to her shop to check on her latest works Spike accidentally knocked Opal out the second floor window, where she clung for dear life to treacle on the outer wall. Rarity was beside herself with worry and could not use her magic to get to Opal. When this happened, a unicorn from out of town, who happened to be passing through on business rushed over and climbed the side of the building and used some of his own magic to bring opal to him. From there the two started seeing one another and eventually she and Silver Forge were married. After that, she talked about how she had a big order to fill for the annual Crystal Fair and was on her way to confirm some of the details with the local ponies. Conversation continued in that fashion for the next few of hours.
As the time wore on, Rarity’s children started to fall asleep and all conversations were ended, and everyone said their good nights to one another. Rarity took Cobalt and Aquamarine off to her room, while Spike and Storm headed back to their own. When they returned to their rooms the time on the clock by the door read nine fifty, not having realized that so much time had passed and feeling more tired than either of them had realized from the events of the day they both decided to call it a night and went straight to bed. It was not until the next morning when the train arrived in the station at the capitol of the Crystal Empire that either of them woke. They gathered their belongings together and headed off to meet with Princess Cadence. When they arrived at the palace Shining Armor was there to greet them.
“Hope you two had a pleasant journey. Unfortunately, Cadence is not up yet and I am not sure when she was planning to meet with you. With the Crystal Fair approaching everything around here has gotten really busy. So, for now you are to make yourselves comfortable and enjoy the city.” With that Shining Armor led them to their rooms and left.
Not sure of what to do Spike looked at Storm and asked, “Have you ever been to the Crystal Empire’s capitol.” Storm shook his head in response and followed up by asking,
“If it would not be too much trouble could we go and walk around the city so I can get a better idea of what all is around here in case we have to stay here for any extended period of time either now or on our way back.”
“That is no problem at all I would love to revisit some of the places around here. Who knows we might even be here for the Crystal fair.” Putting his stuff away, Spike came out of the room where he would sleep and took stock of the suite of rooms given to them for their stay. It was a similar set up to what he and Twilight shared back in Canterlot, but not nearly as homey feeling as the library where he and Twilight had lived in Ponyville. The suite of rooms contained a mutual living space an office and two bedrooms. The living space contained a sofa, a recliner and a large wall of books with a radio a table off to the side.
Storm approached from the direction of his room and motioned to the door letting Spike know he was ready. He was eager for Spike to show him what there was to see what in the Crystal Empire. So walking toward the door they headed out to see the town.
