If ever you catch anypony not giving Spike anything extravagant on special occasions, they will swear it's not because they're being stingy.

No, it's because too much swag encourages a dragon's instinct to hoard and turns Spike into a rampaging monster who will take everything and anything within sight. Even the leaves off trees.
