It all started when he walked in
This is the story a pony. A pony named Trick. A hero he was, a friend he was, and forever in my heart. It all started, when he walked into the Throne room. The Throne room of me and my sister Celestia.
My return to Equestria had been... Rough. It helped being the star at nightmare night in Ponyville, but everyday I see ponies are still afraid of me. They fear me, like a monster. My sister tried to comfort me through it all but it just wasn't working out. My night guards were still loyal to me when I was released from my nightmare form. Though they're more mute than any my sisters day guards and showed less emotion than a wall, a wall can look sad if it is not clean. Almost every night I cried as I looked at my moon, reminding me of what happened that thousand years ago. But it all changed when he walked in. Celestia and me were in the throne room, we had finished all of our royal duties that day and we were as the modern ponies would say "hanging out". It had been a very tiresome day indeed.
"I am relieved we are done dear sister.". I said with a smile.
"Me too Luna, I can now spend time with you.". She replied smiling right back. That's what I like about my sister, she is calm minded, her voice is soothing to everyponys ears, and she always knows what to say.
"What shall we do first dear si-". Suddenly the door burst open and an Earth pony stallion walked in. His fur was white, his tail being the same color. His mane was short and was almost completely hidden by a white top hat upon his head. He was wearing a grin on his face as if he was a big shot. I glance over at Celestia who is as surprised as I was.
"Who are you? How did you get in here?". The stallion looked at me with light blue green eyes and his grin grew. He did a bow towards me with his hat. He then looked up from the bow and stared at me with his grin.
"Somepony left the door open.". He never took his eyes off of me as he rose. I looked back at Celestia who looked angry.
"What did you do to my guards?". The stallion started to chuckle.
"Do not worry about them Tia, I did nothing that could harm them, although I believe a pony named... Shining armor, was the hardest to get by. And by hard, I mean easy. I know he's the new captain of the day guard but he isn't as skilled as you thought.". Never did he stop grinning.
"I want you out of the castle, GUARDS!". The day guards started to come from all directions. The stallion never lost his grin. He was surrounded and immensely outnumbered, how did this pony keep calm like this? The unicorns were charging their horns, the pegusi were spreading their wings, and the earth ponies were ready for battle. How was this pony not afraid?
"Hohoho! Celestia. I'm flattered that you'd give me such a send off. But I'm sure I can leave on my own.". He turned around and started for the door. He stopped and stared at the door for a few seconds.
"I bid you farewell, Luna. I'll be back tonight to visit deary!". The pony then skipped through the door. The guards filed out the door after the mystery stallion. We did not speak of the stallion till dinner. The royal chefs cooked our favorite dish, spaghetti and wheat balls.
"Sister, who do you think that stallion was?". I said taking a bite of my dinner. Celestia looked up at me frowning.
"I don't want to dwell on that stallion, I need you to have more night guard tonight. Whoever that pony was he said he would be back but I know we can prevent that.". Not another word was said at dinner for I was afraid to bring it up. What did this pony want from me? Did he want to harm me? I didn't know at the time, and it was a scary thought. After dinner I went straight to my bedchambers and raised my moon as Celestia lowered her sun. I looked at my moon and started to remember the horrid things I did as nightmare. I felt the tears start to form. I was about to cry when I heard to most pleasant of sounds. The sounds of a poem.
"Luna? Why do you cry again tonight? Do you not see the beauty your moon holds? You may be all powerful, and your speech is quite a mouthful. But do not cry at the sight, the sight of your beautiful night. Instead cry tears of joy, for a wonderful night you have made tonight. A sight that is as beautiful as Luna, the princess of the night.". I looked down off the balcony of my bedchamber and saw the stallion. He wore his hat again and it shone in the moonlight as he stood their as a gentle breeze blew through the night. He looked up me with his grin and shining eyes.
"Hello Luna, I'm pleased to she you once again. Did you miss me?". He pulled flowers from his hat, the flowers were white like his fur but seemed to shine in the moonlight.
"Are those... For me.". The stallion chuckled at this.
"Indeed they are, what use would my visit be if I didn't bring a gift? And do not worry about your bat ponies. They are safe and unharmed, they're just a little tired.". At the mention of this I turned around and saw the night guards were sleeping soundly on the floor.
"See? Unharmed.". I whirled around to see the Stallion standing on my balcony.
"H-how did thou get up here so fast?". The stallion chuckled at me again.
"It's simple really and not very impressive once you know how it's done.". He pulled a vase of the white flowers from his hat and set them down.
"Moonlight flowers for the raiser of the moon. I bid you farewell. Until next time.". He was about to leave when I stopped him.
"Wait! Who are you?". The stallion hopped onto the edge of the balcony.
"My name is Trick.". Trick tipped his hat and jumped off the edge. I scrambled over to see him but he was gone.
I didn't know it then, but this was the start of great adventure.
Then he came back the next day.
After Trick had jumped off my balcony I sat on my bed looking at the vase full of the beautiful white flowers. They were for me. I floated one of the flowers over to me and took a bite. As soon as the pedals touched my tongue my mouth was filled with the most wonderful taste. It was magnificent, I didn't even know what kind of flower it was. Trick had called it a Moonlight Flower. I had never heard of such a flower, it's was beautiful. I was about to eat another but one of my bat ponies bursted through the door almost tripping on the sleeping ones. He had a letter in his mouth and was anxious to give it to me. He let go as I pulled it from his mouth. I opened the letter and read aloud.
Dear Luna.
I'm sorry I left out some minor details about the moonlight flowers. They only gain energy from the moon, not the sun. They also can only be digested by alicorns. Tadaaaa! So it's made just for you deary! I'll be back tomorrow.
From your friend,
Trick.
"Just for me?". I said as I looked at the letter. Suddenly the letter was consumed in white light. I dropped in and scrambled to the other side of my bed. After the light subsided I peaked over the edge of my bed. The letter was different know. I floated it over and it had different text.
Yes, just for you.
I then had dropped the letter on the ground and fell back onto my bed. It wasn't long until I fell asleep. The next morning I woke to lower the moon. As my and my sister and I made the transition I took one last look at my moon before flying up to my sisters room. Her balcony was closed and I knocked rapidly. It went clipclipclopclipclopclopclopclip. My sister opened the door with a major bed head.
"Yes Luna?".
"He came!". I yelled excitedly. My sister however was not pleased, in fact she was terrified.
"Did he hurt you!? I swear on my sun I will have him locked away if he laid a single hoof on you!". She said pulling me into a tight hug.
"No He didn't Tia, quite the opposite in fact. He read me a poem and gave me a vase of the most beautiful flowers. He called them moonlight flowers.". I remember after I had this Tia face went blank.
"M m m moonlight flowers?". I raised my eyebrow at that. It was weird how she said that.
"Yes, moonlight flowers. They have the most delightful taste. They even gain energy from my moon too! He said they were made just for me!". Again her reaction was not one I was expecting at the time. She suddenly had a worried look as she stared off into the distance.
"Luna. I want you in day court today.".
"But sister, you know how much I hate Day court.".
"No bit Luna, I don't want you near that stallion. I just want to keep you safe.". Celestia said smiling at me. She wasn't acting right, something was up. I didn't know what but I decided not to pry.
The horrid day court started. I. Hate. Day court. Even to this day I hate it. It's boring, I don't have a say, I just sit and listen to the ponies argue. I was about to dose off but somepony had said something the caught me off guard.
"These flowers are sprouting up everywhere! I thought we got rid of all of them in the. Thing. Celestia, you must put a stop to it.".
"What kind of flower is it?". I said, but as usual nopony listened.
"Now let's not get hasty gentlecolts. How bad have the flowers been spreading and what kind of flower is it?.". Celestia said. I could tell she was tense, at the time I wish I knew why.
"Celestia! We wish for you to stop pretending! You no darn well what flower it is!". The representative was harsh and angry, I'm surprised Celestia hasn't had Jim thrown out of the room. I turned to my dear sister to see her on the brink of tears. I scooted over to her and put my hoof on her shoulder.
"Dearest sister, what saddens you?". She moved my hoof off and looked away and whispered something so soft I couldn't hear.
"Celestia! Day court is no time for your bonding!". I felt my anger rise and I was about to use the royal Caterlot voice when the door to the room flew open.
"My my! Somepony just doesn't know when to shut up!". Everyponys eyes averted to the pony standing into the doorway. "Hohoho! Hello Luna! I hope I'm not intruding.". Trick says sitting down. I look over at the representative who was not happy.
"Who are you and how did you get in here!?". Trick silently chuckled as he took off his hat and placed it on one of the tables.
"Well my good sir, I'll tell you what I told Celestia. Somepony left the door open. Now, go ahead and continue. You won't even now I'm here.". He leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes. The representative sighed as he turned back to my sister and I.
"As I was saying the moonlight flowers have been spreading at an unnatural rate. Somepony has been planting them and we want it to stop!". After he had said This Trick had stood up once more. He had his hat on now and he was smiling.
"Ahem. Well I don't think these flowers are dangerous at all. In fact they're quite beautiful, like the pony who feeds them. I really don't see what the problem is.". The representative turn to Trick and scowled. I didn't know what to do at this point, I was sitting and watching this happen like a fool.
"The problem is that they're everywhere. All around the castle gardens, and every other garden in Canterlot! My young colt tried to eat one of these abominations and he got as sick as a diamond dog!". In a blink of eye Trick scrunched his muzzle against the representative's.
"Never insult a moonlight flower. For if you insult a moonlight flower, you insult the moon.". Trick then made the representative sit on the floor as he pushed his face closer. "If you insult the moon, you insult Princess Luna.". I started to blush at Trick's actions. He wasn't defending the flowers, he was protecting me... In a way.
"I-I'm sorry sir. Just i speak for the ponies of Canterlot. And we need the flowers destroyed.". Trick then tipped his hat to where his eyes were nearly covered.
"You representatives need to see the other side of things. Have you ever seen the flowers at night? And while we're at it, why did you need to come to the Princesses to get rid of some flowers?". Trick said as he raised his eyebrow. He then pulled him up and stood him on his four legs.
"I gonna leave, and I'm gonna come back tonight. And if Luna says you were mean to her and Celestia. I'll have your hide. You got that?". The representative nodded and Trick backed off. He then turned to me and bowed.
"Until tonight dear Luna.". Then he swiftly turned around and walked out the door.
