Chapter 2: Fall of a King

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Day of the changeling invasion in Canterlot

A lone figure walked to edge of the Crystal Empire, clad in a coat and goggles, with a purpose in mind. He saw that his barrier still held the cold and windigos out. Smiling, Sombra stepped into his empire.

He needed to find his wife, maybe even see if his spell had actually worked and put the empire in suspended animation. Either way, he was not going to be stopped by anything now, not even the internal damage from the dark magic he had to use. Sombra was then distracted by the serine and even picturesque scenery; the rolling grassy hills, the farmland waiting to be tilled, the natural growing crystals that gave the empire it's name, the Crystal Palace shining like new. It was all so beautiful, even when he had enslaved the crystal ponies, he tried to keep the Empire looking like something out of a storybook.

Not that he had any ill will towards the crystal ponies, they were just the key to keeping changelings out of equestria. He then noticed something odd; none of the shops were open, nopony was taking their plow out to the fields to start tilling the soil, none of the guards donning their armor and going over to protect the palace. No activity. Nopony even preparing the decorations for the festival! Sombra made a face of disgust. Now his subjects were content with forgetting their duties and their heritage!

Angered, Sombra walked into one of the residential areas and looked around. He saw a few crystal ponies moping about near windows or doorways. They seemed depressed or something close to it. Sombra had no time to contemplate their current state, he HAD to get to his wife. Only a few of the crystal ponies even glanced his direction, looking as if they had forgotten everything.

No matter he thought Seeing that they all survived is all that matters.

Sombra made his way to the end of the residential district, to the house made of green crystals. It had a tree growing out front. He made his way inside. It seemed just as he left it, clean and organized.

He then called out "Willow? Are you here? It's Somber Heart! I'm back from the palace."

Sombra heard a meek voice behind him "Who?"

"Somber Heart, your husband"

"My husband's dead" Said Willow

"You don't remember me?"

"My husband was a soldier, I don't know who you are or why you are here"

"I'm here to see you, but why don't you remember me?"

"You're not my husband" She said in vehement denial

"But-"

"Get out of my house, you're not my husband!" Willow shouted at the top of her lungs.

Sombra felt something shatter inside. Here was his wife, who he had promised 'till death do us part', she hadn't just forgotten him, she thought he had died! He cursed Celestia under his breath; somehow her spell had tampered with his and caused the crystal ponies to fall into a state of depression.

But, Somber Heart didn't care anymore. He couldn't care anymore. Celestia and Luna had taken the most important thing from him. He wandered out of Willow's home, his home, the home he would have given his entire empire to be there. He stumbled towards the blizzard covered wasteland.

A lone figure braved the blizzard, wandering somewhere. The cold sapped its energy. After about three hours into the doomed trek, the figure collapsed into the snow, with no energy left to preserve itself.

A black cloud began to form around the figure. . .

Four days later

Cadence and Shining Armor were making their way from the train station to the newly revealed Crystal Empire. As they trekked through the blizzard, Shining could have sworn he saw a moving figure in the distance.

About the third time he saw it, he pointed it out to Cadence. She stared at the figure for a moment, the she saw the purple mist coming from it's eyes. She turned towards Shining "Get back to the station and wait for Twilight and her friends, I'll go to the empire"

Shining turned the opposite direction and began moving back towards the station. Cadence turned towards the figure.

"So you're the one Celestia warned me about, let's see how much of a threat you are compared to a princess!"

Author's Note

Alright, I hope everyone is ready for a slightly less regular schedule!
Anyways, I kind of felt that this needs some help.
I'd like some feedback on the heartbreak scene and all that jazz so I can make it better
I hope the Prologue didn't merit a mature rating. . . .
