Redemption

All was quiet on on the prison courtyard.

It was May 5, 2520, and the first signs of summer were beginning to appear on the planet Warsaw. However, now was not the time for the stationed United Terran Federation troopers to welcome the new atmosphere.

Surrounding the courtyard were dozens of security troopers, each wearing sinister grey and crimson armor with malevolent looking gas masks and armed with magnetic rail rifles. Any moment now, a Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) ship carrying two lethal criminals was bound to arrive.

Sure enough, a gray blur was seen in the clear sky and getting bigger. Their newest prisoners had arrived.  The metallic drop ship shaped like a sleek bird descended onto the platform. The engine however, did not die down.

A squadron of security troopers took their cue and scrambled onto the landing sight, positioning themselves in front of the VTOL's doors. The Federation guards readied their rifles, causing the magnetic rails to spring to spring to life and hum in anticipation.

After a pause, the VTOL's back doors opened up and four elite assault troopers stepped out. They were distinguished by their more cybernetic white and red striped armor instead of the usual grey riot gear and a more metallic gas mask that had two glowing red eyes.

Once the nearly mechanical soldiers cleared the way, the two Nightmares were seen. Federation soldiers were no henchmen or goons, but even they were a little uncertain under their gas masks.

Nightmare Moon and Nightmare Rarity, previously known as Luna Faust and Rarity Bell, looked at the armed security troopers with both annoyance and disgust. The augmented Nightmares both had flowing and ethereal hair that signified their enhanced power with Nightmare Rarity's being a wild purple with white stripes, while Nightmare Moon's resembled a night sky.

After a pause, the two Nightmares began to walk forward. Before they could step out of the VTOL however, two assault troopers immediately apprehended them from behind with one hand and pointed a gauss pistol at the back of their heads with the other.

The Nightmares scowled and continued to move while struggling against the grasp of the assault troopers behind them.

The next they knew, the Nightmares found multiple snipers uncloaking and pointing deadly coil guns at them. A single round from a coil gun was more than enough to blow apart a human body.

"My, I never received so much attention in my life." giggled Nightmare Moon.

"I even heard there was an entire kill satellite pointing right at this prison." added Nightmare Rarity. "They would blow the entire continent off the map just because of us."

Suddenly, the two assault troopers handling the Nightmares received a notification on their HUDs. It was time to keep the two augmented women in check once more.

Glancing at each other and nodding, the two assault troopers reached for their utility belts and picked up what looked like a cybernetic canister with running blue lights all over it.

The next thing the Nightmares new, a gritty electric shock passed over their bodies and nearly caused them to trip had the assault troopers not held them in place. Soon enough, the guards and prisoners entered the prison complex. The insides of the building were not what one expected. Despite the Federation's preference for using scare tactics, the interior of the prison was rather calming. Utterly bland and basic as paper, but calming nonetheless.

"This is Major Commissar Vladek! All inactive security teams are to report to section 34 to contain prisoners NM-1 and NM-2!"

Finally, the two Nightmares ended up in their cell block, if it could be called that. The room they were directed to simply did not match with the malevolent appearance of the Federation's guards.

The only thing that truly stood out of place was that the room was littered with Federation propaganda. While the prison cell was certainly comfortable and comparable to an apartment's room, the Federation wasn't providing these accommodations out of the goodness of its heart, but rather a desire to butter up prisoners to get them back into serving the government's interests.

The two assault troopers finally let the two Nightmares go and stepped outside to guard the entrance along with all other stationed security personnel.

Commissar Vladek's voice made itself apparent again. "You two are to stay inside your containment zone until lieutenant Commissar Alexer arrives to brief you on your fate. NO EXCEPTIONS!"

"At least we don't have guards breathing down our necks." muttered Nightmare Moon.

"Think again." pointed Nightmare Rarity. To their dismay, outside the window were five security troopers pointing gauss rifles at the duo.

A week ago, a group of scientists on the planet Apex had laid out the procedure to augment a human into a different kind super being with magic like powers through a complicated procedure requiring nanomachines, biological alterations, and cybernetics. It was code named project N.I.G.H.T.M.A.R.E. All that was needed were individuals with the right genetic code to be transformed.

Coincidentally, both Rarity and her friend Luna from the colony Equestria had the right genes for the procedure to work properly. Nightmare Moon raised an eyebrow. "It trust you are Commissar Alexer."

"That's right." replied the Commissar with a mechanical rasp.

"Let's inspect the damage now, shall we?" mocked Alexer, a muffled laugh escaping his gas mask. "You guys did quite a number in New Ottawa and Harper City on Apex."

Nightmare Moon rolled her eyes. "How many casualties?"

"You two were far more focused on property destruction with no regards to murder. All severe casualties are nothing our medical technologies can't fix." boasted Alexer. "Although thanks to you two, we have numerous destroyed buildings and millions of patients. That whole eternal night thing that Nightmare Moon brought up certainly didn't help. Do you know how much resources we're gonna have to spend to repair the damage?"

"At least it gives your government an excuse to pillage more hard earned money and create employment." grinned Nightmare Rarity. She paused and knitted knitted her eyebrows. "Is it just me, or is it rather hot?"

"You're not the only one." groaned Nightmare Moon. "How do the prisoners stand it?"

Alexer cleared his throat. "As the Federation believes it is far more useful to keep prisoners alive to forcibly serve humanity rather than killing them off, we cannot legally drop the death penalty on captured prisoners."

"Which is why police brutality is common right? That way you can shoot your dissidents without actually having to actually pay attention to their rights!" giggled Nightmare Rarity.

Alexer shook his head. "However, the Federation still looks at life as a case by case basis. Since you two are by far the most dangerous monstrosities to plague the United Terran Federation and its citizens, we will have no choice but to execute you two by firing squad."

The Nightmares didn't lose their confidence.

"We would if it keeps monsters like you down." defended Alexer.
