Sweat and Fangs

I ran hard, bolting through the cold winter air of Transylmania. My body burned from the tough jog around the town, ponies and humans staring at me as I ran. Not because of my strange body, but because of my constant running. Most other Satyrs were in school still, and everyone was still getting used to seeing me around town. My time had come, and I was ready to join the town proper.

I ran through a freshly paved road, spotting a human with a cup, steam bellowing from it as she held it out, leaning into the street. I kept up my pace, slowly listing towards the women and yanking the cupful of food from her. She snapped back immediately, "Hey! Blue haired fuck!"

I quickly found myself with a cup full of cheap noodles, steaming from the cup and burning my bare hands. "Gah!" I did my best to managed the heat, quickly finding it to be too much and hurling it into an alley. The cup shattered against the stone floor, leaving me noodleless and burned. I simply continued to run, my hooves clattering against the cobblestone as I hit the main road. I rushed past the wide street, dodging a cart and heading towards the market. The wide streets lined with thestrals and humans, almost all stopping to watch me run for at least a moment.

I continued my sprint, breath curling around my mouth as I tried to control my breathing. It felt both amazing and amazingly painful, the thin mountain air coupled with the bitter cold was rather painful. I carried through, sprinting into the market and dodging a few ponies. "Watch out!" I screamed, rolling and bumping against a passing human, "Sorry!"

"Fucking psycho!" he yelled, flipping me an obscene gesture before turning back to his work. I just laughed, the people of Transylmania were always rather bitter this early in the night, the sun not yet setting and ushering in the night. It was the perfect time for running, just light enough, and soon the moon would be high and the streets would be lit with numerous lanterns.

I hurried my pace, running past ponies setting up shops, humans moving supplies, and a few other Satyrs going to school. I ignored them, the younger generations rather annoying when compared to my usual elder company. My family, nobles of House Iron, were rather hard people, even those who were not born into it seemed to be rather tough. And I would soon join them, my time as a child over, it was time for me to go out, find my niche in life and return home when I've found my purpose.

In my afternoon dream I bumped into the back end of a cart, rolling over the top of the flatbed cart and scrambling to my hooves. I stumbled forward, nearly falling as I used my momentum to stay upright. "Holy crap! That was aweso--" I was cut off, slamming into a familiar frame and topping us. A girly scream rang out, followed by an indignant shout.

"Pony ass!" the voice screamed, pushing me off and to the market floor. I feel to my ass, looking around and spotting a purple maned Satyr doing the same, "Idiot! Why were you not watching your damn step!?"

I scrambled upright, "I'm sorry!" I extended a hand to help her up, "Let--"

"Don't touch me!" she threw my hand off, "Idiot!"

I grew flustered, "I only tried to help!"

The girl stood up and got in my face, shoving me back a step, "Help yourse--"

I shoved her back, "Don't push me!"

She let out a shocked gasp, "Don't you shove me!" she stormed back over and slugged me, sending a hearty but dull pain into my bicep, "I-- What the fuck!?" she snapped, jumping back as I slapped her belly, "Stop touching me!"

I put my arms to guard my face as she tried to slap me, "But it's okay for you to touch me!?" In an angry flash I grabbed the bottom of her shirt and tugged it down.

She jumped back, scrambling to cover her bra. "You- fucker!" she threw herself at me, slapping me over the top of the head and causing me to retreat, "You think you're funny!? Wha--"

"Hey!" a burly voice cut her off. We both stopped to find a trio of guards standing next to us. A thestral with a hat glared at us, "You both need to come with us...."

"But--" before either one of us could argue we were grabbed by a pair of human guards. The girl started shouting at me and the guards, "I didn't do anything! He pulled my--"

I tried to wiggle free as the guards forced us towards the castle at the top of our city, "She's the one who hit me!" I tried to dig my hooves against the stone road, failing and producing a constant clatter as I tried to force myself free. "I- stop it!" I screamed, lifting my legs off the floor and trying to kick free.

The purple maned satyr seemed to be causing even more trouble, kicking her leg back and trying to slam her hoof into the guard's groin. "I'm- I did nothing!" she yelled, joining my in my frenzy as we were forced up the hill towards the castle, everyone on the road watching us flail as we went. We looked ridiculous, hooves flying, arms bound behind us. More and more thestrals snickering as we were carried on.

Before long we were dragged into the courtyard of the town's castle. The tall grey stone horrifying as it disappeared overhead, replaced by a large vaulted ceiling as we were carried inside. Thestrals were rushing about like mad, guards lining the room as everyone woke up and started their nights.

Myself and the other Satyr were carried down a flight up steps off the main hall and into a small holding area that housed prisoners before their sentencing. "What!?" I screamed, pressing my hooves against the stone and trying to keep from being thrown into the cell. "I'm- we're not criminals!"

"Shut up...." the guard holding my arms pulled me back, jamming my back forward and bending me into an L. My body was pinned, forced into the cell with the purple maned satyr, "Just be quiet." he rubbed his forehead and walked off, leaving myself and the purple mane alone.

We just turned away from each other and moved as far apart as possible. I could hear her grumbling, "I told you...leave me alone, but nooo, stupid Iron boy--"

I turned to her with a grimace, "My name is Coal, Coal Av Iron! And I already said sorry!"

She turned to me, her wine eyes bright in the dim light of the cell, "Well your sorry sucked!" she crossed her arms, making sure her shirt was fitted, "...Well...?"

I scratched my head and leaned against the wall, "Well what?"

She pouted softly, "Are you going to ask my name?"

I shrugged, "Something Av Crag, no?"

She shifted her frown to the right of her mouth, "...Arrow."

I nodded, "Nice name. Arrow Av Crag...aaaaah-vuuuuu, Craaaaaaag." I mumbled, rubbing my forearms. Things grew quiet as we stewed in our miniature prison, "So...what do you think will happen?"

Arrow let out a defeated sigh, "If we're lucky...death."

I swallowed hard, "And if we're not...."

"Our families." we stated in unison.

I rubbed my mouth, "Great."

Arrow turned to the bars, kicking them with her hooves, "Why do you even care!? Your family is a bunch of thugs, you'll probably get rewarded for this!"

I scoffed, "Not like you...bunch of thieves and cowards!" I stomped my hoof, "How do ponies even use a crossbow!?"

She glared at me, "How is a blue maned stallion meant to be intimidating!?"

"Better than some one eye'd freak!"

She didn't flinch, punching me in the cheek and sending me a step back, "You're talking about my dad you absolute dick!"

I rubbed my chin, not retaliating. "Well your father is missing an ey-- wait! You...but...." I pointed to her then back to me, "We're...both heirs?"

She shook her head, growing slightly dour, "No...the title goes to my aunt before me. You are the heir?"

I shrugged, "Not yet, but once I can fight for it, I shall win!"

Arrow just grumbled, "Klutzy prick."

My voice crumbled into a series of flustered grunts, "I- ...you- ...fuck you."

Before she could shoot back a pair of bitter looking bat ponies trotted over. A purple maned stallion with an eye patch and my blue maned mother, clad in her usual iron chest piece. "Coal." she mumbled unlocking the door, "What happened?"

I rubbed my arm as I left the cell, standing before my pony mother and growing extremely shameful, "I got in a fight...."

My mother just shook her head, "With...an Av Crag?"

I nodded nervously, "Yes ma'am."

"Did you win?"

I shrugged, "We didn't finish."

My mother just nodded, her long thick mane bobbing like mad, "Pyrrhic?" she turned to the one eyed pony. They started talking, lots of nodding and lost of whispering punctuating their speech. I grew extremely nervous as I spotted Arrow shifting from hoof to hoof.

Before things grew too awkward my mother broke away from her speech, flying up to meet me at eye level, "You're fighting tomorrow morning."

"What!?"

She just nodded, "You want to start fights in the market, we will end them in the ring." she bit my tail and started leading me towards the surface. She let go of my tail, knowing I wouldn't dare leave her side on the walk home, "You remember your wrestling?"

I scratched my head as we walked through the main hall of the castle, "Mostly, why?"

My mother smiled back at me, "Cut and file your hooves and nails, practice tying your tail and make sure you eat well." she chuckled raspily, "This should be fun. A good chance for sports between the houses. Just don't lose, we have a reputation to uphold!"

I felt a nervous sense of dread filling my gut as we walked out of the castle courtyard, guards plodding around lazily and going about their work. We stepped down the main path out of the castle, taking a hard right down a narrow alley. We walked down the alley, the path leading to a small door with our family's crest on it. My mother pushed the door open, revealing our small training yard and our manor.

My cousins running about the field, too young for school, but too old to nurse. Satyrs and ponies running around, all blue maned or wearing some sort of blue cloth. It was nice to see, giving me a warm feeling in my gut. My joy was short lived, quickly replaced by fear as I spotted my father standing in the doorway.

He stepped down, his black boots clicking against the stone porch. His long legs leading up into a black metal vest with a blue shirt under it. "...Coal...." his voice boomed, shattering my resolve in seconds, "What did you do?"

My mother just fly up to him and pecked him on the cheek, "Just a scuffle, I'm taking care of it."

My father looked down at me, my body not yet reaching his height, "Coal...inside."

I nodded, rushing past him and heading inside. I hurried past my extended family, dozens of people filling the large home to the brim. I hurried to my room, locking myself in my small nook and finding some proper clothes, my jogging attire rather gross. With a fresh outfit in my hands I walked towards the baths, passing a few younger ponies as I hurried down.

Little by little the air grew humid. Each step towards our basement grew steamy and damp. It felt wonderful compared to the cold winter air. I watched my steps, being sure to start looking for a free pool to bathe in. The damp room was a miniature cavern, pools of water sunken into the floor and heated by fires below the foundation. I spotted a single young mare alone in a far off pool.

I hurried over setting my clothes down and stripping down. My now bare body was quickly submerged, the mare with me utterly uninterested in my existence. She sunk her mouth under the water, blowing a few bubbles before coming back up, "Coal...how are you?"

"Oh, aunt, hello." I mumbled, settling into the water, "Uh...good...I'm fine."

My aunt just nodded, not bothering to open her eyes, "Got in a fight?"

I scratched my cheek, "How does everyone know about that already?"

She just sighed, content in the warm water, "News travels fast in the slow mornings." she lifted her body from the water, shaking off and spraying me and my clothes with a fine mist. "Well, either way, good luck. Don't lose to a mare."

I just grumbled and cleansed my body. Hot water and a brush worked to clean the sweat and grime from my skin and clearing my coat of crud. I took my time, genuinely enjoying the warmth and settling in.

Minutes passed, leaving me alone in the cooling waters of our baths. Little by little my body soaked, my mane drooping down until my eventual rise from the pool of water. A quick dry off later and I got dressed. A pale blue shirt with black pants. Not exactly the fanciest dress, but functional and pleasing to the skin.

I didn't bother with shoes or boots, leaving my hooves bare and rolling my pant legs up. Once cleaned up I took a deep breath and stretched out my limbs. My legs burned for a moment before popping into place. "Auugh- ahhh," I released a pleased grumble as my joint popped. I finished my stretching, turning to the stairs back to the rest of our home and finding a file.

I did as my mother instructed, spending the rest of the day trimming my fingernails and wrapping my tail. It struck me as strange, how would any pony besides a unicorn be able to do this. The rest of my day was rather uneventful.

Watching TV, reading, practicing my holds. I was going to be ready.

I slowly walked towards my bed, my day reeling down. My mother cut me off in the hall, "Coal! Good, it is time to feast." she pushed her head into my stomach, forcing me back down the steps and towards the ground floor.

"Wait!" I yelped, "I was- bed!"

My mother just started humming, "You can't eat just before the fight, you'll cramp. We feast now, clear our bodies in the morning, and fight like mad!" she started snickering like mad, "It's going to be glorious."

"But- I don't--"

I was cut off as I stumbled into our dining room. My mother trotted past with a steady gait, "Oh quiet you." she shoved me across the long rectangular room, sitting me down at the pony height table and onto a cushion. "How are you my son? Refusing food...utterly barbaric." she sat next to me and let out a sharp whistle, "Quinn, food!"

Seconds later a now elderly pony trotted into the room, trays of food sitting on his back. He slid it onto our table, leaving and bringing three more trays before sitting with us. Four platters of food lay before us, the two ponies not wasting a single dawn moment. My mother and uncle dove in, tearing into the bountiful feast of pork and potatoes.

I just stared at them. "...I...." I just scratched my head, "But--"

"Oh just eat," my mother scolded, her hooves perched on the end of the table, "You bitch like your father." Things grew quiet, I took my time and grabbed a chunk of meat and downed it, tossing a spoonful of potato into my mouth from the serving bowl. "So...are you excited?" she asked, looking me over, "You look nervous."

I rubbed my mouth to clean it off, "I'm fine--"

"Will you be fine when fighting naked?" my uncle asked, lazily chewing a piece of pork.

My mother bolted upright, "Viduk, that was supposed to be a secret." she turned to me with a smile, "But...I assumed--"

"Whoa...wait...." I held my hands out, "I...with a mare!?" My face started burning, "I can't do that!"

My mother scoffed, bopping me with her foreleg, "Scared she'll grab your person?"

My eyes popped open, "I- I wasn't, but now-- What if I--"

My uncle just stood, trotting about and silently judging me. "What? If you touch her soft skin...caress her breast, accidentally, press your...hands, against her sex."

My mother just started snickering. I grew crazy as my uncle went on, "It's not gonna be like--"

I just sat, glowing bright red at my uncle's implications. I turned to my mother, "He's joking...right?"

My mother just laughed, "Go get some rest. We'll leave before dusk."

I nodded to her, "But...there will be--"

"You will be nude, there will be no scratching, pulling of mane or tail, nor any punches or kicks. Simply, teeth and hooves- oh...and hands." she scratched her head, "Eighteen years with my husband...you'd think I'd remember those stupid things...."

I looked down at my hands, my pony legs standing under them. "...I think of this some times, are we...am I, a freak?"

My mother stopped laughing, "Coal, thestrals were called freaks, bat ponies were called freaks, at one time pegasai were called freaks. It all fades in time, so...yes, and no." she stood from her cushion and trotted over to me, "But does this matter? No, what matters is the pony inside the body. You think I liked these...monkey people, when they first came to our land!? Well, I did, but others did not." she stomped her hoof, "Now go, rest, and forget about this stupidity."

I smiled warmly, "Thank you. I--"

"Oh shut up...just do it." she held her hooves out, "Always so grabby...you get it from your father."

I gave her a quick hug, not daring to keep it on for too long, lest I get a swift hoof across the back of my head. My family was loving, but not exactly the greatest at showing that love. Better, I supposed, than to be of the other noble house. House Dusk having gain a reputation as a rather, free loving, family. But, for all their decadence, seeing two twin sisters share a tender moment was still rather appealing.

I hurried through the plaster and stone walls of my home and up to my room once again. I settled into bed, my mind brimming with excitement and terror.

The day was restless, my rest fleeting in the anticipation of my fight. I awoke to a familiar face standing over me, blue mane spilling over my face, "Brother...time to get up." my sweet sister's voice rang true, forcing me out of bed and onto my hooves. "Mother said--

"I know...I'll get ready." I saw her out, her half pony body letting out loud clacks as she walked away. I found set of clothes. A pair of jeans and a button up shirt. Another simple night's dress, one that I would apparently not be wearing long. With my body clothed, my pride covered, I hurried down the steps to our entry, a wide rectangular room with a few racks of hats and coats, pairs of assorted hoof and footwear dotting the exterior wall.

My mother was waiting, not saying a word and simply walking outside. I joined her in her slow march and hit the town. "So...are you ready?" she asked with a soft laugh.

I rubbed my arms as we reached the main road once again, this time going down towards the train and farmlands. Far off away from the town and on the edge of the valley stood a large complex next to a tunnel. The way to a small forest beyond the valley wall. "Coal, what do you know of this girl?"

I rubbed my chin, "I saw her at school...just learned her name...so, not much."

My mother nodded, "And of House Av Crag?"

I scratched my head, "Crossbows...."

My mother laughed, "That's why they live by the woods. But, understand, we are fighters, they are fighters, this will be quite a battle." She quietly lead me down the path and to the gate of the home. The long walk proved a good chance to stretch my legs and warm up.

I felt my throat go dry as we walked past a small wall and into the other family's property. I felt a bit nervous as scores of ponies, satyrs and humans surrounding us as we walked towards the biggest building on the plot. A large two story L shaped building stood before us.

I didn't get much of a chance to look at the timber and stone walls before being thrown inside. The dark room was a relief on my eyes, but that relief was short lived as a darkness drew over my vision. "What!?" I yelped, feeling hooves on my back, "I can't--"

My mother's voice carried through the air as I was guided blindly along, "Don't worry...just going to get you ready. I'll be watching so you'd better win."

Her voice bled away as my legs were lifted from under me. I was dragged blindly along, body supported by ponies' backs and hands. I felt myself dropped into a cold stone room, my pants quickly yanked down as my shirt was pulled off, "What the fuck!? I--" I couldn't protest, my hands held by some unseens pair of hands.

"Take it easy...you're...well...mostly fine." the female voice snickered a little, "Must be cold in here."

I stared at a strange panel on the wall, no substance to the object, merely a light projected on the wall. "This is nuts! How is this in the same city as the Castle!?"

Arrow joined me at the panel. "Better question, why is a caveman trying to figure out a haptic pad." She pressed a few buttons, causing a large set of numbers to appear at waist height. "Seriously, Coal, don't touch anything, just don't."
