King Sombra, the evil ruler of the Crystal Ponies, was banished long ago. Now the ponies live in peace under rule of Princess Cadence and Head of the Royal Guard, Shining Armor.

Princess Luna is the adventurous type of pony. Bored with only having close company with her sister, she decides to go to the library. She finds a book. Tries to decrypt it. She summons the new alicorn princess, Twilight Sparkle, for help. Without realizing it, Twilight does some very dark magic, summoning something very dangerous.

And the thing is, she's supposed to kill him.
