Inkwell's Origin

Magic for Beginners!

Previous Chapter

As I enter the store, the scent of paint and paper fill my nostrils, it is quite satisfying for some odd reason. I approach the front counter to ask for some paper, when a German Shepard dog ran towards me, barking loudly. This caused my little Quinn to shriek in fear and roll up into a tiny spiky ball. I flinch as the dog is approaching at a rather incredible speed, but it was held back by a leash and a sharp voice, "Harley! Down!"

The dog obeyed and lays down as a blue pegasus with a grey hoodie approaches. His cutie mark is a pencil and a paintbrush crossing, making an X.

"I'm sorry about my dog, miss..." the pegasus apologizes, "Harley is just curious!" he ruffles the fur on his head.

I smile, "It's quite alright, no harm done!" I set Quinn down in front of Harley, "It's okay Quinn, look!"

Harley sniffs Quinn in curiosity for a good long minute before Quinn himself unfurls himself and sniffs Harley's nose.

The colt smiles, "Is that a hedgehog?"

I nod, "Yes, it is!"

"He's a cute little fella, I'll give you that..." the pegasus compliments.

I grin, "Thank you!" I move aside to let him pay for his stuff.

The pegasus goes ahead of me, but turns back to me, "How come you didn't call him Sonic?"

I laugh a bit, I may have lost all of my memories, but I could never forget the blue blur, Sonic the Hedgehog. "I was looking for something more original..." I explain.

The pegasus laughs, "Well, I like the name, Quinn...Reminds me of Harley Quinn...the Joker's wife..." he pays for his things and looks back at me, "My name's Cerulean, Cerulean Sketch!"

I shake his hoof, "Pleasure to meet you Cerulean! I would tell you my name, but...I don't remember it...I sorta kinda lost my memory..." I admit.

Cerulean  frowns, "Oh...I'm sorry..."

I get the paper I need before responding, "It's okay, I'll remember soon enough!"

"Well...I hope you remember soon..." Cerulean says.

I smile at him and Harley as I pick up Quinn and place him on my head, "Thanks..." I go to the entrance, "Well...see you around..."

Cerulean waves at me, "See you..."

As I leave, I look back at him in curiously. Somehow...I feel like I know him from somewhere...Like we were connected in some way...and I know deep down, this is not our last meeting....

I return to the library and set the paper down on a table, "Got the paper Twilight!"

Twilight smiles, "Thank you!"

Scootaloo and I grab a stack of paper, an inkwell, and a quill. With those materials, we sit down at a table. I put Quinn on the table and try to pick up the quill. But every time I try to pick it up, it slips between my hooves and onto the floor.

Twilight notices this quickly, "Don't you know how to use magic?" she asks, "You are a unicorn after all!"

I shake my head, "I've never used magic..."

I see Twilight grab a book off the shelves, "Well, I think it's time you learn how to use magic!" Twilight sets the book down and starts flipping through it with her magic, "We aren't gonna try anything too advanced, just a simple levitation spell that will help you pick up objects. Every unicorn learns how to do this at a young age...but you are a full grown mare, so this may take awhile..."

I glance at Scootaloo and then back at Twilight, "If it will help me, I'm willing to learn!"

"That's the spirit!" Twilight exclaims.

I grin, "Okay! So...where do I begin?"

Twilight flips through the book and stops at a chapter called: MAGIC FOR BEGINNERS somehow I find this really humiliating...

Twilight explains to me how to use the levitation spell, of which sounds really complicated the way she explains it. She actually tells me the mechanics of magic! It's really hurting my head and confuses me to no degree! Thankfully, she notices my confused state.

"Oops...sorry..." Twilight apologizes while blushing, "I guess me being a smart pony can have its this advantages!" she chuckles softly, "Basically, the way I learned, point your horn at the object and really concentrate on moving it or lifting it!" she puts a blue quill on the table, "Try lifting this..."

I obey without question. I point my horn at the quill, close my eyes....and concentrate with all my might.

I open my eyes....

Nothing happens...

I try again...and again...and again...for three long hours. Still nothing....

I start to concentrate with my eyes open, and still...nothing...

"This is impossible...I'm never gonna learn how to use magic!" I declare.

Twilight pats my shoulder reassuringly, "Please don't hit yourself over the head...unicorns learn how to use magic in different ways, speeds, and even ages! It's like a pegasus or bird learning how to fly, each one learns differently..."

Scootaloo pats my other shoulder, "Yeah! I don't know how to fly, and I'm way past that age of learning how...but I don't really care! I'll learn someday! I won't give up!"

I smile, "Thanks for the support everypony..." I look at Quinn, who is nibbling on the piece of paper in front of me. I pick him up, "Looks like someone is hungry!" I look through the pack Fluttershy gave me, and pull out a baby bottle and the formula. "Do you have a heat source to heat the formula?" I ask Twilight.

Twilight shakes her head, "Sorry, no...but..." she turns to the purple and baby dragon next to her, "Spike?"

Spike nods and breathes green flames under the bottle, heating the bottle and its contents.

I put the bottle on the table, "Thanks..." I look at the bottle, wishing I could pick it up with magic.

With my eyes open, I imagined the bottle floating, and I guess I started concentrating on the bottle without me even knowing. I see the bottle floating in front of me in a light blue green aura.

I gasp, "Twilght! Girls! Look!"

Twilight looks at me and gasps, "You're doing it!"

"I-I am!" I exclaim, "Look Quinny! I'm doing it!"

Quinn didn't seem to pay attention, he was eyeing the bottle with a hunger.

I giggle and feed him the bottle, which he drinks ravenously. Soon the milk is gone and Quinn is asleep in my lap, curled up in a ball.

I put the bottle away and turn to the page of blank paper on the table in front of me. I see the blue quill sitting on the paper next to the inkwell, waiting to be fed ideas.

I pick up the quill with my new found skill and and I am I about to write, but...I don't know what to write about! I have writer's block! Just my luck!

Applebloom looks outside, "The sun's settin'! I gotta go home!"

Sweetie Belle gasps, "So do I!"

Scootaloo looks at me, "Meet us here tomorrow with the finished story!"

"Okay! It's a deal!" I nod to show my enthusiasm.

With that, we thank Twilight and depart. Just as I step out, I am greeted by Derpy.

Derpy grins and hugs me, "Hi there! How's it going?"

"Good! I learned how to use magic, and I got a new pet!" I show her Quinn.

"Aw! So cute!" Derpy exclaims.

I grin, "Thank you!"

Derpy trots in front of me, "Come with me...you don't have anywhere to stay currently! So I will let you stay with us...!"

My ears perk up, "Us?"

"Me, Dinky and Sparkler! My foals!"

I chuckle warmly as we walk into the sunset, "I can't wait to meet them!"
